Chapter 1: Confusion Amongst Us
Chapter Text
The air was thick with tension. Nugget sat comfortably on Max's beanbag, and Max was posted in his gaming chair, facing Nugget. Max was twiddling his fingers nervously, and glancing down at the floor. "Max, is something wrong?" Nugget asked, breaking the minute long silence which had previously encapsulated the room. "I- I um, i-its hard to explain." He stammered. "Max, it's okay. Is there something in particular on your mind?" Nugget inquired, his primary concern currently is Max's mental wellbeing. "I- I guess." He replied anxiously. "So? What is it Max?" Nugget asked him. Max stared down at the carpet for a moment, spinning slightly in his chair, then slightly tilted his head up before speaking. "Promise me you won't get mad or anything." He softly spoke. "I promise Max, you're my friend, I care about you." Nugget attempted to soothe Max. Max's face felt hot, and he had a lump in his throat. Nevertheless, he uneasily begun to speak. "I- I um- sorry- I, I love you, Nugget." He was practically forcing the words off his lips. He sat there, his hands balled up into a fist and biting his lip. Nuggets eyes widened immediately. This wasn't what he was expecting. "I- what?"
Nugget was incredibly confused. We're both boys, boys don't love boys; he thought to himself. "Oh fuck, no- I- I'm sorry I shouldn't have said anything just forget it-" Max sputtered. Tears begun to well up in his eyes, and his lip was quivering. "M-Max I- But we're both boys! It doesn't make sense!" Nugget panicked, his arms fluttering around with his words. "I-I don't understand it either Nugget it just-" He begun to speak. "I'm not gay, Max. W- We're friends." Nugget made a poor attempt to explain his thought process. Tears begun flowing down Max's face. "I- Nevermind!" He sobbed, running out of the house. "Max! I- Wait!" He hollered. Nugget felt terrible. "Fucking hell, what have I done? He loved me and I just broke his heart, I'm a terrible friend." He muttered to himself, head in his hands. He had that sensation behind his face, the sensation of wanting to cry, but being unable to do so.
Meanwhile, Max ran down the block to the local park while sobbing. "I shouldn't have said anything goddamnit!" He sobbed to himself, tears racing across his face. Once he reached the park, he sat in his favorite swing as a kid. He placed his head in his hands and sobbed. It was late enough into the day no kids should be there, he was all alone. Nugget raced out of the house, dashing down the street. He knew where he was. Max always went to the park when he was upset. Nugget knew Max better than anyone else did, so he would know if anyone. He was short of breath, and paused for a moment, his mind pacing with thoughts. Various kinds of thoughts. "Do I love him? Will he be okay? Does this mean what I think it does?" He thought to himself. Amidst the intense flurry of thoughts, he began running again. He had to talk to Max. He arrived at the park, Max was exactly where he thought he would be.
"Nugget? W-What are you doing here? What do you want?" Max sniffled bitterly. Nugget stood still, shaking slightly. There was faint evidence of tears in his eyes. "I- Max- I don't know. I'm worried about you." He softly spoke. Max looked up confused amidst his crying. "I-I'm sorry I said anything. It's just stupid. I'm stupid." He spoke with a tone of admission, which is unusual for him. "Shut up Max! You're not stupid, please don't say that." Nugget pleaded, his voice shaky and erratic. "I'm stupid for loving you. You have that girlfriend of yours or something, why the hell would I think you're like that?!" He cried, wiping tears from his eyes as he spoke. Nugget felt an aching pain in his chest upon hearing his words. "Max I- I don't know. I don't know anything at this point. I don't know about my girlfriend, I don't know about my own identity, I don't know how I feel about you Max." He rambled with a somber power in his voice. "I don't feel like she's right for me, I don't even know. I've never really liked a girl. I've never felt as connected to anyone else besides you. But- I-Its wrong for two boys to date. If you were a girl I would love you, Max." He professed, each word rolled off the tounge in an instant it felt like. "Why would I have to be a girl? Why can't it just be us as we are, Nugget? If you'd love me as a girl, why wouldn't you love me as a boy?!" He pleaded for a reason from Nugget. Nugget stood there, shaking and desperately searching for an answer. "Nugget, tell me. Why?" He begged softly as he begun to break down sobbing once more. "No- Please don't cry, Max. I- I don't know, okay?! I feel like I do love you but i-it just couldn't happen. What would people think of me and you, Max? They'd think I'm a freak..." He stumbled over his words as he begun to cry too. A singular tear rolled down his face, as he stared at Max with eyes of confusion. "So you- you do love me? You just wouldn't do it because of the opinions of other people?" He questioned, his voice a quiet shaky query. "Oh fuck- I- I do, Max. I do love you. I just- I- oh for fucks sake-" he admitted with a tinge of shame in his voice. Max's eyes widened, and he wiped off his face with the back of his palm. "T-Then what's stopping us from being together Nugget?"
Nugget sighed shakily and dashed over to Max, grabbing him by the soft collar of his turtleneck, pulling him in for a kiss. When their lips collided, Max felt a rush of adrenaline go through his body, initially tense and rigid; then easing into the kiss, placing his hands behind Nugget's head, pulling him in closer. Nugget pulled away after a good ten seconds, and Max's arms unwrapped around him. Max stared at Nugget with surprised but loving eyes, the two enjoyed a twenty-second moment of silence together. "Nugget, w-what does this mean for, y'know, us? Are we?..." He asked shakily. The sun had set upon the two of them, the night easing into the world. And under the light of the waning crescent moon, Nugget accepted it. He's gay, and he finally feels comfortable acknowledging it. After five-ish seconds, Nugget replied. "Yes Max. I want to be with you, I always have. I finally feel like I can say it." He smiled softly, gazing at Max. Max's face lit up, he jumped off the swing and embraced him in his arms. "I love you, Nugget." He whispered. "I love you too, Max."
