Chapter 1: I Have a Dream
Chapter Text
“Are we there yet?” Sirius asked.
Remus groaned as he maneuvered the van through the mud.
“No Sirius, as I’ve been telling you for the past three hours there’ll be a huge sign that marks the camp road and then it’s another little while.” He swore as he swerved to avoid the tree that seemed to appear through the pouring rain. Sirius squinted at the windshield.
“As if I could see anything through this storm,” he complained. He pulled out his phone and looked at the map. “Ooh! Only thirty more minutes!” James leaned forward from the backseat to see the phone, careful not to awake Peter next to him.
“Thank God for that, I’m starving.”
Suddenly the car jerked up and down and Peter jolted awake. A huge red sign reading in CAMP HOGWARTS in all caps came into view.
“Finally,” Sirius groaned. Remus clobbered him over the head. “Ow! Moony, I thought you loved meee,” Sirius whined. Remus rolled his eyes.
“Since when?” Remus replied. Sirius pouted and tried to wrap an arm around Remus but he batted him away. “I’m driving!” he exclaimed.
Twenty minutes later, they pulled up to a small check-in booth. Remus rolled down the window to talk to the poor soul huddled in a raincoat beneath the small, flimsy awning. “Hello! My name is Remus Lupin and I’m here to check in as a counselor for Junior Lakeside along with Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew.”
The small man with the nametag Filius Flitwick checked them off on a list, “You four are all checked in. Head down that way to the dining hall.”
Remus smiled, “Thank you!” He turned the van down the road and they pulled up next to a building called the Great Hall. A tall woman in a long green raincoat stood outside. They piled out of the car and the woman came over to help with their belongings.
“I’m McGonagall, the head of the Junior Division. I’ll be your boss for the rest of the summer.” She nodded at an extremely tall man coming over, “That’s Hagrid, the sports supervisor; he’ll take your bags to your cabins.” She smiled. “Any questions?” The four boys looked at each other, shaking their heads. “Perfect! Come in.”
They followed McGonagall into the Great Hall to see rows of benches and tables covered with food. The counselors sat at the tables, while the staff sat at the front, all around an old man with silver hair and blue eyes.
Peter leaned over to the boys, informing them, “That’s the founder of the camp, Albus Dumbledore.”
Sirius raised an eyebrow. “He’s old.”
Remus smacked him over the head. “Be nice!” Sirius ignored him and made his way over to the closest table and grabbed a plate. The rest of the boys followed him.
The boys piled their plates with food and began to wolf it down. The girls sitting in front of them were giving them strange looks, which James was the first to notice. He grinned at the redhead staring daggers at him and stuck out his hand.
“I’m Jamesh Potter, whash your name gorgouesh?” he asked through a mouthful of chicken.
She gave him a disgusted look and asked, “Were you raised by wolves? You have simply no table manners.” The blonde girl next to her laughed.
“Don’t mind Lily, she’s extremely sleep deprived. I’m Marlene,” she gestured to the Black girl next to her, wearing an abundance of crystals around her neck, “that’s my girlfriend Dorcas, and that’s Mary.” The last girl had brown skin and thick curly brown hair pushed back by a red headband. She waved her fork at the boys. The boys introduced themselves and they fell into a pleasant conversation.
Suddenly, the door to the hall banged open and four people walked in. Sirius froze, his fork halfway to his mouth. “No…”
“That guy kinda looks like you, Pads!” Peter exclaimed. Sirius seemed to come awake.
“What the hell is he doing here?!”
“Padfoot…” James started, but Sirius had stormed off towards the group.
Regulus had just arrived at the camp with his boyfriends and best friend. He was excited to have eight weeks away from his family and all of their drama, but considering the fact that his disowned brother was strutting over to him, that wasn’t going to happen.
“What the hell are you doing here?!” demanded Sirius.
Regulus shrugged. “Oh I don’t know, maybe counseling kids like everyone else?”
Sirius rolled his eyes. “Why are you here of all places?”
“Mother and Father are donors here, it was one of the only places they’d let me work.”
Sirius groaned. “Of course they have to be donors. Ugh, what if we have to be co counselors?” Regulus raised his eyebrow.
“I requested to be with Panda, did you not request one of those friends of yours?” Sirius let out a sigh of relief.
“Right. I guess we’ll just have to avoid each other then.” Regulus nodded in agreement. Sirius stood there for a second, looking awkward.
“So…how have you been?” Sirius asked. Regulus glared at him.
“Oh, so now you ask? Not for the year and a half you spent away from home, leaving me with them?”
Sirius tried to cut in “I-
“No. You don’t get to ask how I’m doing just because you’re going to be spending eight weeks with me. If you really cared about me, you wouldn’t have left with no warning. We’re not friends.”
Regulus grabbed the arms of his boyfriends Barty and Evan, and pulled them along. Pandora, Evan’s sibling and Regulus’ best friend followed. Sirius was left staring after them in silence.
“Hey, you good?” Sirius turned around to see Remus standing there, a concerned look on his face. Sirius looked down.
“Yeah….it’s just been a long time since I’ve seen him…we’re not on great terms.” Remus nodded. He could tell Sirius was done talking about it. He pulled him into a strong hug, resting his head on Sirius’. Sirius melted into the hug, his face flushing against Remus’ soft flannel shirt. Neither of the boys wanted to pull away, but someone cleared their throat and they jumped away from each other like they were burned. Lily stood there, one eyebrow raised.
“The cabin assignments are out, if you care.” Remus nodded quickly and practically ran to the table, Sirius on his heels, blushing profusely. Lily smirked knowingly at the two boys.
Back at the table, everyone was clamoring around the sheet of cabin assignments.
“Pads! We’re together!” James exclaimed. Sirius cheered, and everyone rolled their eyes. Peter and Remus were together, which was a very responsible pairing.
“I bet you guys ten pounds that Moony and I will be better counselors than you two,” Peter told Sirius and James.
Marlene laughed. “How is that even a competition?”
James gasped, “Marlene, I am appalled! Sirius and I will be amazing counselors!”
Mary raised an eyebrow, saying, “The fact that she didn’t specify why it wouldn’t be a competition, and you immediately thought she was making a dig at you should mean something.” Everyone laughed.
“Ugh, me and Marlene are right next to you two,” Lily told James.
Sirius grinned, “I guess that means you’ll be waking up at 5 am every morning to me blasting Bowie music.”
“You do that every morning?” Marlene asked.
“No, but I will now that you and Ginger are right next to us,” Sirius replied, “plus, I bet those kids need a solid music education, and what’s better than playing David Bowie at full volume every morning?”
Remus laughed. “I’m so glad Wormy and I are across the camp grounds, we don’t have to deal with you.”
Mary smirked. “You’re right next to me and Dorcas, so be prepared for anything.” Remus groaned and everyone dissolved into laughter.
“Attention everyone!” said McGonagall from the front. “Welcome to Camp Hogwarts for the Arts. You all have your assignments and after this you will head to your cabins. The campers will arrive in four days, and tomorrow you will choose what activity you want to assist with this summer. The camper musical will be Beauty and the Beast, a week before camp ends, and the counselor musical will be Mamma Mia! You will perform it on the last day.”
Remus groaned. “No one told me we were doing a musical.”
“Didn’t you read the welcome packet? They always do a counselor musical to foster friendships between counselors!” Lily exclaimed.
“I thought it said we had to help out with the musical!” Remus protested.
Marlene grinned. “Too bad, so sad.”
Sirius gasped, “Mamma Mia! That’s the best musical!”
“I object, Dear Evan Hansen is the best,” Lily countered.
“Um, it’s clearly Ride the Cyclone,” Peter argued.
Mary slammed her fist on the table, saying, “It’s Heathers and I will not be taking questions.” The four of them continued arguing as they left the Great Hall into the pouring rain. Hagrid directed them towards their cabins and everyone ran to avoid getting wet. James bumped into someone and started to apologize, when the boy turned around. He had a long nose, black eyes, and greasy black hair.
“Watch where you’re going, Potter,” he sneered.
James stumbled back. “Snivellus?”

“H-how? Why?” James stuttered. Snape raised an eyebrow.
“Is your brain broken from all that hair gel, Potter?” At the insult, James seemed to snap out of his trance.
“It seems like you could use some, Snivellus, it’s raining and your hair is still greasy,” James quipped.
Snape rolled his eyes and then smirked, “You better watch your back Potter, this summer will be fun.” He narrowed his eyes. “And stay away from Lily.” He stalked away, leaving James standing in the rain. Peter, Sirius, and Remus walked up behind him, Remus raising an umbrella over the rest of them.
“What is he doing here?” James cried. Sirius glared at Snape, who was talking with two other counselors that they didn’t know.
“I bet he stalked us here.” Sirius grumbled. Peter nodded in agreement and said, “He’s probably gonna sabotage us.” Remus groaned, “I’m just tired of him ruining everything fun that we plan. Can we just ignore him?” James sighed.
“Yeah, I guess. He told me to stay away from Lily, do you think she knows him?”
Peter shrugged. “I’ll go get her.”
A few minutes later, Peter and Lily walked over.
“Whatever you want, it better be quick, it’s pouring rain out here,” said Lily. James nodded.
“Sure thing, gorgeous.” Lily rolled her eyes, and James pointed to where Snape was standing, “Do you know Severus Snape?” Lily frowned at the mention of his name.
“Yeah…we grew up together, but we’re…not friends anymore.” James wanted to ask more, but he could tell that was all she was going to say. “Goodnight,” Lily said as she walked away. The boys all looked at each other before saying goodnight and walking through the rain to the cabins. As Remus walked toward Cabin 171 with Peter, he sighed. Once again, Severus Snape had ruined everything.
March 23, 2023, Year 12
“I just asked Kayleigh Amstutz to go to prom with me and she said yes!” James exclaimed. Sirius whistled.
“Damn Prongs, you’re fast. Prom is a month away.” James shrugged.
“That’s not that far away. Who are you guys going with?” Peter grinned.
“I’m going with Emmeline Vance.” Remus nodded.
“She’s nice. We’re on debate together. I probably won’t go.” Sirius made a sad face.
“But Moony, we need you at prom! Who else is gonna help me spike the punch?” Remus rolled his eyes, but his heart was pounding. The only person he wanted to go with was Sirius. He doubted Sirius would actually go with him though. Remus would ask, and Sirius would laugh and say no, and their friendship would be ruined. But Remus couldn’t imagine watching anyone else go with Sirius. He had to ask him. Today. Remus thought. I’ll ask him today after school.
“Sirius, can I talk to you after school?” Remus asked. Sirius nodded and slapped him on the back.
“No problem mate! See you after eighth!” Remus blushed as he walked away.
After eighth period maths, Remus headed into the bathroom. He waited until it’s empty and started rehearsing what to say to Sirius.
“Sirius, I was just wondering…would you want to go to prom with me?” A laugh sounded through the bathroom. Remus turned around to see Snape standing at the door, a smirk on his face.
“Loony Lupin is asking out Sirius Black, huh?” Remus shrank back. He didn’t know what to say. “You really think he’d go with you? Hah! No one could love you.” Snape smirked again and strutted into a stall. Remus ran out of the bathroom, tears pricking his eyes.
Should he ask Sirius? Probably not. But even still….a few minutes later he was still thinking about it at the main exit door. He didn’t think anything of Snape walking past, talking to Amelia Bones. He stepped outside and went to find Sirius.
“Hey Pads!” Remus started.
Sirius interrupted him, “Amelia Bones just asked me to prom! I can’t wait!” Remus’ heart dropped. He knew Snape had done this. “What did you want to ask me?” Sirius asked. Remus shrugged.
“You wanna study together?” Sirius nodded. I hate Severus Snape, Remus thought.
June 10, 2024, 6:00 am
Lily groaned and rolled over to turn off her phone alarm. She sat up in her twin bed and rubbed her eyes. She hadn’t gotten much sleep. The beds weren’t terrible, but there was something else nagging her. I don’t need help from a filthy little… She shook her head. She wouldn’t let Severus ruin her summer.
Lily threw off her blankets and stood up. She walked over to Marlene’s bed and shook her awake.
“Marls, wake up!”
The other girl rolled over and groaned something that sounded like “I’m sleeping.” Lily pulled away the blankets and forced Marlene up.
“Breakfast is at 6:30, we have to be there!” Marlene perked up at the sound of breakfast, and reluctantly dragged herself out of bed to get ready. The cabin had two twin beds for the counselors, and each of them got a small shelving unit. A big coat closet separated the counselor beds from six sets of bunk beds for the campers. There was a bathroom at the back with two showers and two toilet stalls. The cabin itself was quite drab, but the girls were excited to decorate it.
Lily was halfway through doing her makeup when she was startled by a loud sound coming from the cabin to the right of them, and she almost stabbed her eye with her mascara wand. She opened the window and looked outside to find James and Sirius dancing in their own window to “Suffragette City”. Lily rolled her eyes and shut the window. Marlene looked over from brushing her hair.
“What is it?”
Lily sighed, “just Potter and Black being idiots.” Marlene shrugged.
“They’re idiots with good music taste,” she smirked at Lily, “and don’t think I didn’t notice you blush when you said James’ name.” Lily flushed red.
“I did not! Potter is an absolute twit, and I was probably flushing red with anger!” Marlene raised a knowing eyebrow and laughed. Lily grabbed Marlene’s arm and pulled her out of the cabin. “Let’s talk about the musical. Who are you going for?” Marlene grinned and forgot all about James.
“Dorcas and I want to be Tanya and Rosie together!”
“I can see that. I want to go for Donna. That way all three of us could be Donna and the Dynamos!” Marlene nodded.
“Yes! Although, what about Mary?”
“What about me?” Mary called as she and Dorcas walked up to them. Marlene kissed Dorcas and then turned to Mary.
“We were wondering who you should be in Mamma Mia, since the three of us are going for Donna and the Dynamos.” Dorcas put her hands up.
“Feel free to go for Tanya too, I don’t really care if I get it,” she said reassuringly.
Mary giggled, “Don’t worry, I don’t want a lead role, I was thinking of being one of Sophie’s friends.” The four girls set off to the cafeteria in deep discussion about the show.
A few feet behind them, Peter, Sirius, James, and Remus were having the same discussion.
“I need to be Sophie,” stressed Sirius. Remus rolled his eyes.
“Chill out, drama queen.”
“Who’s the non-British dad? I would go for him,” Peter questioned. James grinned at Peter.
“You’d be great as Bill! I’m going for Sam,” he proclaimed. Remus hung back as the other three boys discussed the audition.
“Moony!” Sirius exclaimed, throwing his arm over Remus’ shoulders. “Who are you auditioning for?” Remus shrugged him off.
“I’ll probably just work the lights or something,” he shrugged.
Sirius groaned, “Noooo! You should go for Skye and then we could be getting married!” Remus’ face flushed red.
“Probably not. Also isn’t the whole point that they don’t get married?”
“Details, details,” Sirius said, waving his hand in the air as if shooing away a bug. “At least think about it!” Sirius turned his biggest puppy eyes on Remus.
James leaned over and exclaimed, “Come on Remus!”
Remus sighed and said, “I’ll think about it.” Both groups walked into the cafeteria, Mamma Mia the only thing on their minds.
