Chapter 1: THE ENCOUNTER

Chapter Text

Magnus

**Midgard(?)**

In hindsight, I should've seen it coming. But me, being the oblivious idiot I was, didn't see it coming.

It was confusing, really. You mess with the god of traveling and suddenly you're falling at least two hundred feet above the clouds. I didn't even mean to let Alex antagonize him to the point of being sent on a non-consensual skydiving trip, featuring no parachutes.

…Okay, so maybe I meant to let him because Víðarr (pronounced Vee-dar, for the mortals here), was getting on my nerves. Whatever. It was just a few frustrating words and then he sent us through space and time to wherever the hell we were spat out!

The clouds sped by us as I felt my ears pop from the sheer speed we were plummeting to the ground. Alex clutched my hand as I saw Sam trying and failing to fly, panicked as she realized her wings weren't accessible anymore. Blitz screamed, and if Hearth could, he would. Amir was screaming louder than all of us, trying to flatten his body to make the descent slower.

In the distance, I saw a bird. It was big. Kind of uncannily big. Better to focus on that rather than the fact I was going to die, right?

The bird was getting bigger. Was it…coming closer? I looked to Alex as the trees that were going to spear me in two got closer and closer.

“Alex?” I shouted as he tried not to cry, breathing  heavily. “Do you see that bird?”

His eyes were shut tight, and he shook his head. “Gods, no! A bird?! I’m gonna die, but I’m not watching it happen for a stupid bird!”

Sam had managed to make her wings surface, but they didn't work. She glided over to us, joining our circle of hands. Amir was hoisted onto one of her arms, sobbing. “Grab Blitz and Hearth!”

I reached my arms out and they moved with us. The bird was still getting closer. Alex took a deep breath and opened his eyes. “...Oh, there is a bird. Wait…that’s not-”

Suddenly, we passed through a low-hanging cloud, and I felt myself get doused in water, the cold instantly freezing around me. The dirt pieces pierced my skin, and I felt myself getting light headed.

“Guys, we need to get-” Alex started with a terrified tone, before letting his head sag, flopping in the wind pathetically. He was unconscious.

The others had already passed out, and the last thing I saw before following was the bird morphing into a giant black blob with green eyes and teeth.

Hiccup

**Dragon’s Edge Island**

“Yeah, bud! That’s it!” I yelled over the roar of the wind, leaning low over Toothless’ back.

My wingsuit mask felt like it was going to fly off any moment, but the circular hooks attaching it were secure. It was cold enough to probably freeze me, but I felt warm from excitement.

Toothless groaned happily in reply, soaring ever upward. I yelled in triumph, thinking about how we should do this more often.

Without warning, there was a searingly bright green light from above us, making Toothless come to an abrupt halt and my eyes automatically shut.

“What the-?” I blinked several times, looking at the source of the beam, and saw a massive green crack in the sky closing up. Beneath it, there were…people?

Six people were free falling through the sky, quickly losing altitude and gaining speed. Before I could allow myself to wrap my mind around what had just happened, I shouted to Toothless.

He began to dive, quickly shortening the distance between us. I calculated how best I could carry all of these people, but luckily, Astrid and Stormfly came behind me. I looked at her in surprise.

“What are you doing here?” I yelled as she looked just as confused as I felt about the people falling.

“Tuffnut was being stupid and we needed you back at the Edge, but- what just happened?!” Astrid replied as the people fell through a cloud. “Aaaand they’re definitely unconscious now.”

I went faster as they neared the trees, seeing the people closer. They were a strange group, but he didn't have time to notice much more than their faces.

Toothless grabbed a boy who looked about our age, a second boy falling right next to him, and the girl. Stormfly caught the other three just before they were going to hit the trees, spreading her wings to giant altitude quickly.

“Let's get them back to base!” I called back to Astrid. She nodded, still looking deeply confused.

Who are these people? They must've had dragons they were riding (whether they were hunters or not), but I’d never seen them before. We could worry about that later. They needed to gain consciousness, preferably not “captured by strangers” hundreds of feet in the air.

Astrid talked to me as we headed back home, raising an eyebrow. “You know these people? They're an odd bunch.”

I shrugged. “Nope! Hope they're friendly…”
