Work Text:
athena tried hard not to look back at janey as she stirred dinner. tonight was a regional delicacy, aptly named ‘skag soup’. hardly the most nutritious meal, but it sure beat what she used to eat on the road. cans of unseasoned potatoes, beans, anything she could spare with the cash she stole from unlocked safes and dead bandits.
the soup bubbled. athena held in a sigh.
today she’d gotten another call. moxxi had stopped, out of respect for her relationship, but word was still out about the shield-toting mercenary who’d do your dirty work for the right price. it was a good call. lucrative. the woman on the other end sounded desperate and rich.
janey hated when she put herself in danger. a quick buck didn’t justify how risky the jobs were. “you can put your life on the line however many times you like,” she’d said. this had been their fifth or sixth, but final, argument on the topic. “just don’t expect me to be there to put you back together.”
that was supposed to be the end of it.
athena took the job.
she glanced back at janey, who was piecing together a puzzle on the kitchen table.
athena would tell her. just not tonight.
