Chapter 1
Summary:
Caitlyn walks off the ice grabbing her bag and leaving the ice rink as fast as she can, hoping to not run into Vi at all on her way out.
*Really? She’s the new freshman? That pink haired dumbass was apparently the best high school hockey player in the country that she’s been hearing all about?*
Caitlyn couldn’t handle Vi even sitting in the same classroom as her, let alone having to be with her at every hockey game for the rest of the season.
Notes:
I got inspired to write this fic because I wanted to do a College AU and Vi is very much a sports woman, so I had to make her an athlete. It only felt right to make it about hockey because, hockey players punch each other quite often, and women's college hockey is actually quite a popular sport. I also felt compelled to write this because I actually played hockey (I was a goalie) when I was a child, so I have some experience on the sport.
I want to post 1 chapter a week for at least a couple of months, I'm truly not sure how long this fic is gonna be.
The title is based off of the 'Oil & Water' thing that Vi says, except it's Ink & Ice because it's a school setting for the ink and y'know in hockey you skate on ice...
Ok anywho thanks to @RatInvestment for proof reading this fic for me, so I wouldn't make a horrendous fool out of myself while writing! :3
Chapter Text
“Hey teach, sorry I'm late!” Vi loudly announces as the doors to the lecture hall swing openly powerfully, her pink hair swooping over her face as she gives the students who turned to look at her a swift wink before sliding into a seat in the back of the classroom.
“It's professor, Miss Violet, and please try to be quieter when entering the classroom. I would rather have you be late to class than be a distraction.” Professor Heimerdinger says in his nasally vocal tone, turning back to the board in front of him to continue his lecture.
Caitlyn was watching Vi from the second she entered the classroom, asking herself, Could she be any less of a nuisance? This is the third day of classes this semester and the third day that Vi has been about 30 minutes late to class, barging in as loud as she possibly can. Caitlyn can’t help but loathe the impressively cocky, obnoxious and rude freshman. Not to mention that Vi is an absolute woman magnet, the fact that she’s hot and she knows it only inflates that already massive ego of hers.
As Caitlyn’s train of thought finally focuses back to the lesson on historic weaponry being presented by the tiny professor, she hears him speak. “And I am going to be selecting your partners at random for your upcoming project. Now I know it’s early on in the semester, but I believe that a big project allows you to prepare yourself for the rest of the term!” Heimerdinger explains, a little too excitedly for a 9 am class. “You will have one collaborator to help you create a small model of a weapon that you think could have existed sometime in Piltover’s history.”
Now the idea of working with any of the thick-skulled idiots in her class sounded awful, but at least the project idea gave Caitlyn a spark of passion. She has always been fond of weaponry, particularly guns. When she was a kid she would go to the shooting range every weekend and even joined a junior shooting competition, being the only girl in the competition, and she didn’t miss a single target. But since she started focusing on academics, she kind of left behind her passion for shooting.
“Alright everybody,” Heimerdinger announces “That’s class, but think about what you would like to create for your project, and tomorrow I’ll give you your partners.” Caitlyn’s eagerness to begin thinking about the project fizzles slightly when she gets reminded that she has to work with one of her dimwit classmates. She just hopes that at the very least she doesn’t get paired with Vi.
***
Vi walks into the locker room of the skating rink, the cool air feels natural on her bare shoulders, the smell of sweat pungent in the air. Vi would never admit this, but she’s very nervous as she suits up for her first day of practice, knowing that she is the only freshman on the varsity hockey team.
She finishes tying her skates before stepping out onto the ice. A tall and built player with a ‘C’ on her jersey (signalling she’s the captain of the team) skates up to Vi. “Hey kid, you’re late… To the first day of practice, no less. Coach isn’t gonna like that for a first impression.” She snarls out in a hostile manner, before turning around to skate back to the team. The back of her jersey reading ‘Sevika’ as Vi just shakes her head, playing up her bravado as she follows suit, skating up to the rest of the team.
“Sorry coach, I know I’m late- my car ran out of gas on the wa-” She gets interrupted by the coach before she can finish her sentence. “I don’t give a damn what your excuse is, okay? 4 down and backs, goal line to goal line, the whole team.” All of the players groan while a few glare at Vi. “If one of you is late, you’re all late in my eyes. This is a team, so you take accountability for your own and your teammates actions.”
As they all skate to the goal line and the coach instructs them to begin, one of Vi’s teammates whispers to her, “Hey Pink, don’t be fuckin’ late next time, Coach Vander’s got a stick up his ass about stuff like this, ‘teamwork’ or whatever he preaches, but I’m not a fan of doing your punishments for you.” She finishes as she skates ahead, the name “Nolan” plastered to the back of her jersey. Vi just shakes her head, thinking about how much of a bad first impression she’s making on her new teammates.
Vi skates into the huddle to close off practice. At least she was able to be relatively unproblematic for the rest of practice, even having some fun with a few of her teammates, Sevika in particular. “And one more thing,” Vander states “This is the team's manager, Caitlyn, she’s not gonna be at every practice but she will be with me on the bench during games, so if you need stats or anything, ask her, okay?” He looks at the team as they nod in approval, a few of them waving to the blue haired tall girl. All Vi can do is stare at her for a few seconds before averting her gaze, recognizing the girl from Heimerdinger’s class.
As Vi gets completely undressed and changes into her streetwear, she gets stopped at the door to the rink by head coach Vander. “Hey Lanes, I’m sorry if I was snappy at you during the start of practice, but I mean this when I say, you can’t be late to practice anymore, got it? I know you're the best high school hockey player in the country, but that doesn't mean you're above the rest of the team.” His tone is much softer now that he’s out of his coaching role.
Vi sheepishly smiles at her coach before speaking, “Yeah, sorry. Being able to be on the team is a privilege and I’m not taking it for granted. It won't happen again, I promise.” Vander gives her a soft smile as he pats her back gently “See you tomorrow, Vi.” He says as Vi walks out of the facility.

Chapter 2
Summary:
Vi thinks about what Sevika said.
*She can’t be that bad, right? I mean she likes hockey, surely we can bond over something.*
Notes:
I said I was gonna do one chapter a week but I got a lil excited and may have posted this one a tad early.
Thank you to @RatInvestment for the beta reading and enjoy chapter 2!
Chapter Text
Vi wakes up as her alarm blares in her ears, the sound making her head throb. She groans loudly before reaching over to turn her alarm off, reminding her of what she was up to last night when she turns over and sees her sheets very messed up and a coat that isn’t hers, laying on the ground next to her bed.
“Fuckk…” She groans, sitting up at the edge of her bed, rubbing her hands over her eyes. “How late was I up last night, 'cause it feels like someone ran me over with a truck.” She grumbles to herself.
Vi is determined to make it to class on time today. She picks up a random sports bra (it might not even be hers), hoping it’s clean enough. She also picks out a random pair of sweatpants alongside her favorite red hoodie that she wears everyday. Vi drives over to Cecil Hall, where her 9 am class with Heimerdinger is located. She looks at the clock on her dashboard, realizing she’s actually 15 minutes early to class today.
***
Caitlyn walks into the lecture hall, freezing up the moment that she sees Vi is sitting in the seat right next to the one she normally sits in. She hesitantly shuffles down the aisle, thinking about a few things as she slowly walks to her seat. Why is Vi actually early today? And why is she sitting right next to me?
“Hey there. You gonna sit down?” Vi inquires with a quirked eyebrow, looking Caitlyn directly in the eyes.
“The hell are you doing sitting right next to me?” Caitlyn asks, her British accent coming in strong.
“We’re partners for the project.” Vi informs her, seeing the annoyed look on Caitlyn’s face she continues, “Hey, I like it just as much as you do. You think I wanna work with a girl who’s here on daddy’s money?”
“And you think I wanna work with someone who’s here because she can hit a puck with a stick?” Caitlyn quips back, “Because at least I’m here because I’ve got a fucking brain in my head.” She slams down into her chair, averting her gaze away from Vi after that insult.
Vi cringes at the last insult that Caitlyn threw at her, hitting a sensitive spot in Vi's heart.
“Can we just shut the fuck up and act like normal people?” Vi keeps her head facing to the ground, before looking up to Caitlyn. “What's your problem with me anyway? What did I even do?”
Caitlyn sighs, knowing that Vi is right about just shutting up. “It doesn't matter.”
“What?”
“It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter why I don't like you and you don't like me, okay?” Caitlyn explains, sitting back in her seat.
All Vi manages is a slight grunt before she pulls out her laptop, going on YouTube and watching NHL highlights while Heimerdinger starts his lesson.
“Of course you’re on the hockey team too. I should have known that an obnoxious dick like you would be a sports girl.” Caitlyn says after a few moments of silence.
“What, you jealous?” Vi snaps her focus away from the hockey highlights to glare at Caitlyn. “You weren’t good enough to make the team so you have to play pretend coach?”
Caitlyn lets out a small giggle, “You think I want to play hockey?”
“I guess I should have known a goodie two shoes like you wouldn’t give two shits about hockey. You’re probably just there to put it on your resume.” Vi brushes her bangs away from her face as she speaks, leaning back into her chair nonchalantly.
Caitlyn scrunches her face at the insult, “I care about hockey! I would just rather not get brain damage.” Her posh accent becomes very apparent as she corrects Vi. “It's just- my mom wasn't a big fan of me getting into physical sports. She would rather have me spending my time studying.”
Vi just grunts at the admission, her expression remaining neutral.
***
At the end of class Vi asks, “Hey, uhm, maybe we should meet up to study tonight. After hockey practice maybe?”
“I can't, I'm busy tonight.” Caitlyn answers, almost too quickly.
Vi looks at her with a quirked eyebrow, “What, are you too busy getting it from some frat boy?” She says while making an exaggerated thrusting motion with her hips, biting her lip as she does so.
“You're fucking gross, y’know?” Caitlyn has a look of disgust in her eyes at the crude humor, “And to answer your question, no, I am not ‘getting it’ from some frat boy. I have obligations as the hockey team's manager.”
“Well how about tomorrow? I don't have any classes all day.”
“That's because tomorrow is Saturday, smooth brain. I'll just give you my phone number.” Caitlyn pulls out a sticky note, scribbling her number on it before aggressively slapping it on Vi's shoulder.
“See ya tomorrow, Cupcake.” Vi gives a little wink at Cait before twirling around and walking out the door, hand shoved in her pockets.
Cait scoffs “Cupcake?” and then just mutters something to herself about Vi being a dipshit as she watches her walk away, those wide shoulders swaying and pink hair flowing quite nicely. What are you doing, Cait? She thinks to herself as she realises she's staring at Vi while biting her lip. Caitlyn just shakes her head, trying to just ignore the dumb jock that's occupying quite a bit of her brain at the moment.
***
Vi's tires screech to an aggresive halt in the parking lot outside the ice rink.
“This isn't GTA, Pink.” A voice hollers from the entrance to the building. Vi looks up to see the team captain giving her a smile.
“I've got a name y'know” She yells back.
“Sorry your highness, Ms. Lanes.” Sevika apologizes sarcastically, opening the door for Vi dramatically.
“Fuck you too.” Vi flips her the bird playfully while smiling as she walks past her teammate.
***
Vi slams against the boards with a thud, Sevika is strong as shit Vi thinks to herself, knowing her shoulder is gonna be bruised tomorrow from that hit.
Practice today has pretty much been all scrimmaging. Vi is a natural at hockey, the way she is able to always be in position to take powerful slap shots or the way she can control the puck like no one else on the team, it’s just flat out impressive. Coach Vander has been going through the lineups and the starters are as follows: Margot is the center, Lest and Maddie are the wings, Vi and Sevika are the defenders and finally Renni is protecting the net as the goalie.
After just one practice, Vi and Sevika have been bonding quite a bit, as they walk out of the hockey facility, they chat about the team's lineup and how confident they feel about the upcoming season.
“This is the best team I’ve ever been a part of.” Sevika can’t contain the excitement in her voice as she beams at Vi with a childish smile. “And damn sis, you hit hard by the way. I thought those biceps of yours were just for show, but when you checked me, it felt like I was getting hit with a truck.”
“I mean I never hit at full force in scrimmages, you’re lucky you aren’t ever on the receiving end of my checks in game. You know I hit a girl so hard once that it cracked the board.” VI flexes her muscles through her skin-tight long sleeve shirt.
“You’re kidding.” Sevika plainly states, unable to imagine someone being able to hit that hard.
“The girl I hit wishes I was. I’m serious, I think she had to leave the game for concussion protocol or something.”
“No shit…” Sevika reaches her truck, opening the door before asking, “Hey, what’s it with you and Caitlyn?”
Vi is a little shocked by the question as she gives Sevika a puzzled look, “What do you mean?”
“I mean it’s kinda obvious, you two look at each other like enemies in a TV show.”
“I- She’s just got a stick up her ass, I dunno, she doesn’t fuck with me and I don’t fuck with her. So we avoid each other, it’s for the best.” Vi gives a half-hearted smile at her teammate.
“Aw come on Lanes, she’s nice, gotta be a team y’know, even with the non-players, they’re still your teammates too.” Sevika gives a little shove to Vi’s shoulder as she speaks.
“Well- Yeah, sure I’ll try to be nice. We’ve got a project to work together on tomorrow, so maybe I’ll try and at least be friendly with her. I’m not tryna be an asshole, promise.” Sevika gives an untelling face and grunts at this information.
“Well, good luck. See ya on Monday, Vi.” Sevika says before closing the door to her pickup truck, giving a small wave that Vi returns before pulling out of the lot.
Vi thinks about what Sevika said. She can’t be that bad, right? I mean she likes hockey, surely we can bond over something.
Chapter 3
Summary:
Vi and Caitlyn discuss what they wanted to do with the project for quite a while. The conversation flowed so well. You would have never thought that they have been at each other's necks for the better part of a week with the way they talk.
Notes:
Chapter early again, cuz why not.
And obviously thank you to @RatInvestment for beta reading, or as they have been calling it "Alpha Reading"

Maybe she really isn't gonna be that bad. I mean hey, at least she has a sense of humor. Vi thinks to herself as she throws her phone down on her stomach, trying to be as optimistic as possible.
Vi picks up her phone again to check the time.
10:47 pm
She grumbles to herself before clicking her bedside lamp off and rolling over in bed to drift asleep.
***
Vi shows up at Caitlyn’s dorm building, fashionably late as usual. She gives Caitlyn’s door a firm three knocks, the door opening to Caitlyn giving Vi a smile, almost a genuine one at that.
“You're late.”
Well there goes the friendliness I thought we had, Vi says in her head. “It's my charm.”
“Charm, yes, very charming to ruin my schedule and make me worry if you're even going to make it.” Caitlyn says, a genuine tinge of worry weaving their way into her words.
“Welllll,” Vi holds onto the L sound at the end of the word before continuing, “I'm here now, aren't I, cupcake.” She leans against the door frame, nonchalant, in such a way that makes her look even more buff and intimidating than usual.
Her sleeveless top exposing her underarms completely, and Caitlyn can't help but just stare at Vi for a little bit longer than she should have. Her mind wanders about how even though she is taller than Vi, how Vi still looks like she could pick her up and throw her like a twig.
“Something bothering you?”
Immediately Caitlyn realizes she's been staring for an embarrassing amount of time. “Uhm- No, no. Just zoned out, sorry. Come in, let's get to work, you've wasted enough time by being thirty minutes later than what we agreed.”
Vi smiles at what she hopes is dry humor and not just another sparky remark from Kiramman.
Vi scans the room and sees that Caitlyn is about 10x more organized than her. A designated area that Vi presumes is used for studying and school. There is also a dry erase board with her daily schedule on it, it has things like doing certain assignments to basic stuff like taking her medicine. There's also an area in her room that features plenty of photos of herself and presumably her family, as well as personal achievements for academics and a trophy with a gun on it, interestingly enough.
“So what do we have to do for this project, or whatever?” Vi asks, flopping herself onto the plush carpet in the middle of the room, sitting cross legged.
“We need to make a miniature model of a historically accurate weapon from sometime in Piltover’s history.”
Caitlyn’s response was so automatic, almost as if she was reading it off, or had it memorized. “So what? Popsicle sticks and hot glue, that type of thing?”
“I was thinking that we, y’know, come up with a plan of what to make exactly before we figure out what we need, supply wise.”
“Sure, yeah. What if we did those massive gauntlets that they used for hand to hand combat?” Vi eagerly asks as she starts shadow boxing the air.
“I was thinking about maybe a rifle. There are these really cool ones with three scopes and they were very precise. Weapons that were way ahead of their time.” Caitlyn talks about this rifle design like it's the only thing that has inhabited her brain for the past 24 hours.
Vi and Caitlyn discuss what they wanted to do with the project for quite a while. The conversation flowed so well. You would have never thought that they have been at each other's necks for the better part of a week with the way they talk.
After a while, their conversation switches topics to stuff like hockey and just getting to know each other, and frankly, they don’t get much more of the project planning completed.
Caitlyn glances out of the window, seeing that it’s quite dark outside now, “What time is it?”
“Huh? Oh, uh, 6:30.” Vi tosses her phone onto the ground next to her, “You kicking me out?”
Caitlyn gives Vi a small giggle that doesn’t fail to put a blush on Vi’s face. “Well, it is getting quite late.”
“Yeah, yeah. I get it.” Vi stands up from off of the floor, groaning as her body stretches out for the first time in a few hours. “So… when can we work on the project next?”
“I dunno. Just text me when you’re gonna be available next, I know we’re both gonna be very busy coming up.” She gives Vi a warm smile, getting off the floor herself to see Vi out.
“Hey, one more thing,” Vi says as she is about to exit Caitlyn’s room, “There’s a party to celebrate the start of the hockey season. All of the team is gonna be there, don’t tell Vander though.”
“Uhm, when is it?”
“Tomorrow night. C’mon you can get out, go experience college, loosen up.” VI offers her a sincere grin as she waits for Caitlyn to respond.
“Sunday? But we have class the next morning, I dunno Vi… I’ll let you know later.”
“Sure, yeah. Hope you show up though. See ya, Cupcake.” Vi gives her a small wave before turning around and exiting the room, closing the door behind her.
Why was she being so nice? Did she just ask me to go to a party with her, that’s not a date is it? Is she into me, is she even gay? Plenty of thoughts swirl through Cait’s mind as she stands behind the now closed door. She is blown away by how surprisingly quickly she has been able to be friendly with Vi. And there was a small part of her hoping that Vi asking her to go to the team party was more than just a friendly invitation. She pushes that thought aside though, wanting to go on a date with a massive dorky jock? Yeah, right.
Chapter 4
Summary:
Jesus, Vi, please focus the fuck up. You do not have a crush on this girl. She looks over at Caitlyn one more time before speaking, “You guys want anything to drink, I was gonna get a refill.” She rattles the red solo cup in her hand, emphasising her question.
Notes:
Longer chapter this time! Almost 2k words...
Thanks to @RatInvestment and a few others who don't have AO3 accounts for being homies and beta-reading every chapter for me <3
Chapter Text
“You were right, Sevika, I have to admit.” Vi says to the team captain, grinning lightly. She is sitting on the couch in Sevika's apartment. She lives off campus and rents her own place, and it’s quite nice for a college student.
“About what?” Sevika replies, giving Vi a curious look.
“Caitlyn. Me and her actually got along last night, believe it or not. I even had a good time, I have to admit.”
“What type of a good time?” Sevika gives her a suggestive grin.
“No! God no,” Vi revolts inside her mind about the idea, “She seems about as straight as a fucking ruler anyway. I still don’t like her, don’t get me wrong, but she’s alright. We just talked about the project and our lives and whatever. She said she’s coming to the party tonight, she texted me about an hour ago saying she would show up.”
“Really? You got Caitlyn Kiramman to come to a party? You’re kidding.” Sevika looks extremely shocked as Vi gives her this news.
“What, does she not go to parties?”
“Shit, I thought she was allergic to socializing. She didn’t go to any parties or any activities with the team the whole last year.” Sevika says, still astounded by the fact that Vi got Caitlyn to come to the party tonight.
Vi had shown up a bit early, which means it was just her and Sevika chatting for the first 15 or so minutes, but as more people start to show up, the party gets going a little bit more. There’s plenty of the hockey team and their friends showing up.
Vi is standing in the living room, talking to Sevika who is sitting on the couch next to her when her eyes go wide and she chokes up on her drink as someone walks into the apartment.
Sevika looks up at Vi, “You alright, Pink?” She asks, giving Vi a pat on the back to help her swallow the liquid.
Vi isn’t listening to Sevika at this point, her eyes on the person who just walked in. It's Caitlyn, she is wearing a long navy blue dress, it matches her hair color quite closely and has a slit in the left thigh to show off Caitlyn’s long pale legs. Her straight blue hair is let down, a small bit of it tucked behind one of her ears. She also features blue flats that finish off the monotone outfit. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit is all Vi is able to think when she looks at how drop dead gorgeous Caitlyn looks.
The only thing that snaps her out of her trance is the voice of the woman she’s gawking at. “I didn’t know that it was going to be this casual, most parties I’ve been to have had dress codes and a bunch of rich people.” She chuckles shyly, her cheeks rosy from embarrassment at being way overdressed for a college party.
“Yeah, I should have known your idea of a party would have half the US cabinet.” Sevika says with a chuckle, inviting Caitlyn to sit down on the couch next to her with a pat on the cushion. “I’d never thought I’d see you at a party, Kiramman.”
“Vi seemed really adamant on it,” Caitlyn says, shrugging as she gives Vi a glance, seeing her stand there still stupidly staring at Caitlyn. Caitlyn doesn’t think much of this, going back to talk to Sevika about the upcoming schedule for the season.
Jesus, Vi, please focus the fuck up. You do not have a crush on this girl . She looks over at Caitlyn one more time before speaking, “You guys want anything to drink, I was gonna get a refill.” She rattles the red solo cup in her hand, emphasising her question.
“Yeah, can you grab me a Redbull and a cup of vodka.” Sevika gives Vi a wink as she gives her order.
“Relax, Sevika, we still have practice tomorrow.” Vi teases and reciprocates the wink before turning towards Caitlyn, “How about you, Cait?”
“Did you say vodka?” Caitlyn asks, whipping her head to look at the team captain.
“It's a college party, honey. If there was gonna be no alcohol, no one would have shown up.” She explains. “Listen I know you don’t go out to things, Kiramman, but c’mon, you should have some idea what happens at a party.”
“Why’d you think I told you to not tell Vander about the party?” Vi chuckles under her breath, a slight shake of her head to go with it. “So nothing for you then, cupcake?”
Caitlyn’s cheeks go red when being called cupcake in front of other people, even though it’s just an insignificant nickname that’s meant to be more of a mean tease than anything else.
“Cupcake?” Sevika gives Vi a questioning look.
“I mean she’s soft and rich. How else would you describe a cupcake?”
“I mean maybe ‘sweet’ or something.” Caitlyn suggests playfully.
“C’mon Cait, I’m an honest woman, I wouldn’t wanna lie to you now.”
With a roll of her eyes, Caitlyn gives Vi a dismissive wave, “Just grab me a cola, Violet.”
Vi cringes heavily at Caitlyn, “Ok first of all, who calls Coke ‘cola’. And second, if you ever call me that again, I may or may not spill the entirety of my drink on you.”
Caitlyn waves Vi away again, watching her as she walks away. The muscles in her arms look quite good in her sleeveless hoodie , Caitlyn thinks to herself. Jesus, what are you doing? You know she’s hot, you don’t have to stare at her at every opportunity you get.
Throughout the night, Caitlyn starts to relax and even begins to have quite a bit of fun bonding with the team. She finds it refreshing to be able to geek out about statistics and analytics since her teammates seem to care, well at least when she talks about hockey math.
As the party continues, Caitlyn even decides to drink a little bit, accepting a few beers from Sevika. She lied when Vi asked her if she’s even ever had alcohol.
***
“Want a beer, Cait?” Sevika asks.
It’s a moment of silence from Cailtny before Vi speaks up, “You ever drank before?”
“Uhm, yeah, a little bit.” Caitlyn says with a forced smile, hoping her lie doesn’t get questioned by anyone.
As it gets towards midnight, most of the party guests have left. As Sevika watches Lest leave, she turns her attention towards Vi and Caitlyn, chatting and laughing quite loudly, well at least Caitlyn is. Vi seems more or less unaffected by the alcohol she’s consumed tonight, but Caitlyn is a different story. She’s piss drunk.
“Mhm, yeahhh. My mom does not like it… at all.” Caitlyn snorts after she finishes her story, collapsing into Vi’s arms in a fit of laughter.
“Hey Vi!” Sevika shouts from the living room “I hate to do this, but it is Sunday. I’m gonna need to kick you two out. Can you handle Caitlyn?”
“Don’t worry, Sevika, I understand and I can take care of her. She’ll make it home safe.” Vi gives Caitlyn a pat on her back, helping her up and walking her out the front door. Caitlyn gives Sevika a very excited wave goodbye as she gets escorted out.
“G’night, you two.” Sevika giggles and waves back.
Once outside and in the passenger seat of Vi’s pickup truck, Caitlyn leans over to the driver side and squeezes Vi’s bicep. “You’re buff…”
“You’re just noticing now, cupcake?”
“...And pretty, too,” Caitlyn beams at Vi, expecting some type of thank you she repeats herself, “I said you’re pretty too!”
“I heard you, Caitlyn. Thank you.” Vi knows that such a mundane compliment from an extremely drunk straight girl shouldn’t affect her, but it does. She smiles out of the corner of her mouth, a slight rosy tint showing on her cheeks. Caitlyn, though, does not seem to notice, as she has gone back to feeling Vi’s arm muscles as the other girl drives to Caitlyn’s dorm.
As they pull up to the parking lot, Vi hops out, going to the passenger side to aid Caitlyn. Caitlyn stumbles out, with the assistance of Vi’s hand. She is able to gain her balance by wrapping her arms over Vi’s shoulder. Even slouched down, Caitlyn is still a few inches taller than Vi, looking down on her with glassy eyes.
“Pretty, so… pretty,” She mumbles as she closes her eyes, leaning in for a kiss.
“Cait-” Vi steps back slightly, snapping Cailtyn out of her trance, “You’re drunk. I- I can’t Caitlyn.”
Caitlyn just looks at Vi with an unreadable expression, “I’m sorry,” She whispers, the words barely audible.
“It’s ok… Let’s just get you inside,” Vi says, holding Caitlyn by the waist into the hallway outside of the dormitory. “Do you have your keys on you?”
Caitlyn just nods, patting around at her body aimlessly as Vi searches Cait’s pockets for her keychain. She finds it and tests a few keys before finding the proper key and unlocking the front door to the dorm building. She leads Caitlyn up to her room, laying Caitlyn gently down into her bed and fetching a water bottle from the mini fridge on the corner of the room.
“Drink up, cupcake.” Vi offers the uncapped water bottle to Caitlyn’s lips.
Caitlyn giggles before taking a sip of the water, after she swallows, she speaks. “Cupcake, that’s funny,” She looks at Vi with an almost childlike gaze, “Are you gonna stay?”
“Stay the night? No, I can’t Cait. I’ll see you tomorrow at class. I’ve got a trash can right here if you need to throw up, okay?”
“Mhm” Caitlyn nods, laying back into her pillow tenderly, Vi turning her on her side before tucking a blanket over her shoulder. Caitlyn’s face is a little disappointed that Vi is leaving but she’s practically asleep by the time Vi shuts the door to Caitlyn’s room.
Vi walks to the foyer of the dormitory, standing for a second, feeling slightly drunk. She breathes in, thinking if it will be worth it to stay the night.
Fuck, Vi, are you really gonna drive home? You’re drunk, you shouldn’t drive. But you also shouldn’t stay in this girls' dorm. Has she stayed the night at girls' places before? Sure, but something in her brain makes this feel different than that. It’s probably just because Caitlyn is a teammate . She tries to rationalize it but she also knows that she’s too drunk to safely drive home. Vi slips back into Cait’s room, lying down on the fluffy carpet that she had sat on just a day prior.
She takes a few moments to ponder how Caitlyn called her pretty, multiple times. She also thinks back to the almost-kiss that Caitlyn tried to initiate. She
is
glad that she didn’t kiss an extremely drunk Caitlyn Kiramman, but she would be lying if she said that she didn’t wish that Caitlyn wouldn’t do that while she was sober.
Fuck, I’m definitely crushing on her,
hard
.
Vi’s glad that she’s fucking exhausted and isn’t left to linger about the thoughts swirling through her mind as her eyes quickly shut and she slips into sleep.
Chapter 5
Summary:
“I told you, I didn’t let anything happen, Cait. Have some faith in me.” Vi pushes Caitlyn’s shoulder playfully, “Plus I know a straight girl like you would be mortified to find out you kissed another girl while you were drunk.”
“Straight girl?” Caitlyn raises her voice in offense, “You think I'm straight!?”

Chapter Text
“What the fuck…” Caitlyn grumbles as she feels the body heat of another person in her small twin sized bed. Why the fuck does my head hurt so much, and why does it feel like someone is breathing right next to me
“G’morning, cupcake,” Vi grumbles in a half-awake state.
“Vi?” Caitlyn squeaks out in a panicked tone, “We didn’t… did we?”
“Mmmn, no we did not, you were too drunk. I wasn’t gonna let you do anything, don’t worry.”
These words warm Caitlyn’s insides, feeling weirdly safe while basically half-laying on top of Vi. “Ok, but then why are you in my bed?’
Vi is starting to actually wake up now, due to Caitlyn’s barrage of questions at such an early hour. What time is it anyway? It feels way too early, even for a weekday. “What time is it?”
“That doesn’t answer my question.” Caitlyn sternly responds, sitting up in the bed now, staring at Vi’s back, still laying down facing away from her.
“Well that doesn’t answer my question either, come on, I’m not asking you how to solve world hunger, just answer the damn question.”
“It’s 5:34,” Caitlyn reluctantly answers, after taking a peek at the electronic clock in her nightstand. “Now your turn.”
“I ended up in your bed because you were too drunk to get yourself home, so I drove you. And then you told me to stay, and I wasn’t gonna but then I realised that I was also most likely too drunk to drive more than I already had.” Vi pauses, scratching the shaved part of her undercut, “So I went to sleep on your floor. At one point throughout the night, you dragged me up here because you were ‘cold’ and used me as your personal teddy bear for the rest of the night.”
“So nothing happened between us?” Caitlyn asked, she was relieved but still needing further confirmation from Vi.
“Well.. You did call me pretty about 8 times. I prefer handsome, but I’ll let it slide, you were drunk.” Vi finally turns around, sitting cross-legged in Caitlyn’s small bed. “And you tried to kiss me.”
“Tried?”
“Usually I don't assume but I thought it'd be a pretty safe bet-”
“Safe bet?” Caitlyn's voice goes even higher in pitch, almost cracking, “Did you see the amount of guys I turned down at the party last night?”
“I dunno! I thought maybe you had a boyfriend back in England or wherever.” Vi explains, “And stop yelling, it’s not gonna help with your hangover.”
“What do I have to do to be more gay?”
“Hmmm, I dunno, cupcake. My gaydar has never been wrong outside of you, I can even clock closeted girls. You might be doomed.” Vi gives Caitlyn that same dumbass smirk she always gives when she’s said something dorky. You’ll never hear Caitlyn admit it, but she finds it a very attractive feature of Vi, that fucking grin.
“Whatever,” Caitlyn hops off of the bed, standing slightly wobbly and grabbing her forehead, “What did you do to me last night?”
“Poison, Cait… Wasn’t me though, you can blame Sevika for your hangover.”
“Let’s just go to class.” Caitlyn grumbles, still rubbing her palm against her forehead.
“In that?” Vi says, her eyes being blessed to look over Caitlyn’s form, still wearing her blue dress from the party the night before.
Caitlyn groans at the realization that she is still, in fact, wearing her overdressed party wear from the previous evening.
“I’m gonna, uhh, go home and get ready for the day. Since you wake up at 5 am even when you’re hungover. It’s kinda impressive, honestly.” Vi says, pointing to the door of Caitlyn’s all-to-small single person dormitory.
“Right, yeah…” Caitlyn rubs the back of her neck, giving Vi a shy wave as she leaves.
Vi spins around and smoothly, closes the door in one motion, giving Caitlyn a matching wave. She’s glad that she shut the door, to avoid Caitlyn seeing the heat washing over her face. It’s not fair that Caitlyn is that pretty even when she’s hungover and she just woke up. Vi thinks, Shit, I’ve really got it bad for this girl. She’s a teammate Vi, you really shouldn’t fall for one of your teammates.
Back in Caitlyn’s room, she flops back down onto the now-empty bed, it feels a little bit empty without Vi in it. Oh god. I tried to kiss her! Was she flirting with me this morning? Does she like me? Surely not, or else she would have kissed me last night. The thoughts race through her mind at a million miles an hour, stopping only when the pain from her splitting headache causes her to groan and shove her face into a pillow.
***
Vi slides into her typical seat in the back of the lecture hall for Heimerdinger’s 9 am. Caitlyn, on the other hand, was already in her typical seat in the very middle row on the left hand side of the aisle. She selected it for a very particular reason. It was in the best row for viewing the board but still being able to see the professor (well most professors, no matter where you sit, you would only be able to see the tuft of hair at the top of Heimerdinger’s head). And she decided to sit on the left hand side of the room since she was right handed and it would give her more desk space on the left, which would not be occupied by her hand.
Caitlyn was always very particular about everything, even the most mundane of choices, like where to sit in a lecture hall. It was something she got from her late mother. Her and her mother were very different people, they would argue and disagree but that didn’t mean she didn’t look up to the woman, and Caitlyn was still trying to adjust with life without her mom, who had just died over Christmas break of the previous school year, her freshman year.
And Vi? Well she chose her seat because it was closest to the door. That’s how she always was, practical, ‘don’t overthink stuff’ was always something she told herself. But right now she is very much ignoring her own advice. She can’t be bothered to focus on what Heimerdinger has to say, she’ll just look at the slides after class on her laptop, her brain is other places. One plus of her seating choice was that she could stare at the thing that was distracting her from the lesson today, Caitlyn. Which was exactly the thing she was overthinking.

Chapter 6
Summary:
But their helpless romance was nothing for either of them to worry about as the first hockey game of the season was happening Friday night. And thankfully it was a home game which only excited everyone on the team, knowing how passionate the PZU student body was about any sporting event, especially when the best high-school hockey player in the nation was making her college debut.

Chapter Text
Despite the amount of thinking about the other one both girls did, neither of them actually did anything about it. Definitely not breaking the useless lesbian stereotype. The most that either of them did the entire week was exchange a few words during practice, always about hockey and never about anything that had happened between them on Sunday and Monday.
Vi gets to the arena significantly earlier than most people, the only cars there are hers, a few janitors and a powder (pun intended) blue minivan decorated with graffiti and stickers.
She shakes her head in disbelief as her little sister jumps out of the van and squeals, “VI!!!”
“Hey Pow! I got a few questions, first of all, what the hell are you wearing?” She smiles, trying to hold down a laugh as Powder is in full blue and gold face paint, with a PZU jersey on and an old school hockey helmet with the PZU logo on the side.
Her sister jumps into her arms, Vi picks her up and tosses her over her shoulder playfully, “Well I have to be dressed up for your first game!”
“I expected maybe a jersey or a hoodie, but this… is extreme .” Vi says look her sister up and down as she sets her back on the ground.
“You don’t say,” Ekko, Powder’s childhood friend and now partner says as they hop out of the driver's side of the minivan. “She made me wear whatever the hell this is.” They gesture down at their body, showing an outfit that consists of a full hockey uniform short of the skates and helmet.
Vi bursts out in laughter, “Ekko! You look amazing,” She says through her bursts of laughter, “Oh my gods, that’s awesome.”
“Aren’t they so handsome Vi? Like a real strong hockey player!” Powder says, flexing her non-existent biceps.
“Okay, okay,” Vi interrupts, wiping tears from the corner of her eyes, “How the hell did you get that?” she asks, pointing to the very Powder themed minivan.
“Benzo got it for Ekko for their seventeenth birthday!” Powder explains, putting her arm on Ekko’s shoulder, “And they let me decorate it, since, y'know, it's our shared van.”
“Pow… You can’t even drive.”
“I could if I wanted to, I just haven’t taken the nerd driver lesson thingies.” She says, gesturing wildly, almost hitting Ekko in the face with her hand movements.
“She is 16 now, Vi.” Ekko says
“I know, I know. Wait, don't you guys have school today?”
“I talked Silco into letting us take the day off so we could watch your match!” Powder is now bouncing on her heels, playing with the strap of her faux hockey helmet.
“Right. And you’re here awful early, you know the match isn’t until 7? It’s only like 3.”
“I am painfully aware of that fact” Ekko says with a roll of their eyes, “But Powder wanted to ‘tailgate’ or something.”
“Yeah! A true fan comes early and tailgates the game!” She holds her hands to her chest before gasping, “Vi! You won’t believe what I made for the game.” Powder sprints to the van, opening the trunk and pulling something out.
“Powder… Please tell me you don’t intend on handing those out.” Vi says, visibly cringing at the sight of the posters that are just extremely large pictures of Vi’s head.
“Of course I do, I made like 50 of them.” Powder says, dropping a few of the Vi posters on the ground, “You know how many quarters it costs to print all of these out at the library? You better appreciate my gift!”
“I do, I appreciate all the effort you went to for me.” She tries to feign a fake smile glancing at Ekko who mouths ‘I’m sorry’ at Vi.
“Well, I have a game to prepare for guys, I’m glad you came, it means a lot.” Vi says sincerely, giving Ekko a side and then Powder who throws herself into Vi’s arm, squeezing her until Vi lets go.
“Break a leg, fat hands! Hopefully somebody else's.” Powder shouts while throwing punches in the air.
Vi waves them off with a chuckle as she walks with her hockey bag slung over shoulder into the player entrance to the arena.
***
Caitlyn walks into the locker room, the smell of sweat and the sound of the players idly chatting about the game plan hits her as she walks in.
Vi and Sevika are chatting by the whiteboard with a diagram of the rink that Vander draws plays on.
“All right everyone.” Caitlyn projects, loud enough to get the entire locker room's attention, but still without yelling. “Starters are gonna be doing their walkouts in 5 minutes, are we all ready?”
“Hell yeah, let’s go!” Sevika yells, the rest of the team nodding and giving verbal forms of approval.
Sevika stands up and walks to the center of the locker room, “Everyone in!” She says as the team huddles in a circle around her, putting their gloved fists together, “This is the best team I’ve seen us put together through all my 5 years here, so let’s prove that to me tonight, all right? This crowd wants to see us play well, they’re here for us ! So let’s play like this is our last day on earth!” The locker room breaks out in hollers and nods as Sevika speaks up again, “Enforcers on 3. 1! 2! 3!”
“ENFORCERS!” The whole team shouts in unison as they raise their gloves to the air.
As the huddle breaks apart, Vi looks over to Caitlyn who’s staring back at her, “You nervous?” Caitlyn asks when her and Vi’s eyes meet.
“Not for the game. My nutjob sister printed 50 big ass posters of my head and said she’s gonna pass them out in the crowd.”
“Seriously?” Caitlyn asks through her giggles.
“I saw them with my own 2 eyes, Cait.” Vi responds, looking at the ground and shaking her head.
The clock strikes 6:50 as Vi checks it and nods to the door of the locker room “Guess that’s my cue, Cupcake.” She winks at Caitlyn whilst taking her skate covers off, “See you on the ice.”
Caitlyn watches Vi and the rest of the team funnel out of the locker room with a blush on her face, partially from the nickname, partially from the way Vi’s biceps flex as she straps her helmet up.
***
“And now the defenders!” The announcer bellows through the speakers in the arena as the crowd roars even louder, knowing the two stars of the team are about to come through the tunnel, “Violet Lanes and Leftie Sevika!”
Both of the women come skating through the tunnel together at full speed, hyping up the crowd by pumping their fists in the air. As they come to sit on the bench before the face-off, they take in the completely sold out arena and Vi even hears Powder shouting her name from behind their bench. Of course she got seats right where she can bother me the whole game and heckle the other bench , She thinks while waving towards her sister and poor Ekko.
It’s game time now Vi , She closes her eyes for a few seconds, taking deep breaths as she follows the other starters off the bench and onto the ice. She throws a few punches into the boards before skating to her spot, it’s her routine, it helps her find rhythm and get into a focused mindset.
As the puck drops and the game starts, it’s almost a blur, Vi is focused on one thing only: playing hockey. She’s a natural and works with a flow that no other player can replicate. At one point during the game, Vi takes a hard hit against the boards, the player keeping Vi’s head pinned against the glass. Vi takes this act to use as fuel, little does the opponent know, she’s just earned a target on her back from Vi.
Vi sees an opportunity to knock this player on her ass, when her back is turned to Vi. So Vi lowers her shoulder and drives her whole body force into the opponent, knocking her on the ground and taking the breath straight from her mouth. This act is very much not appreciated by the other player, who gets up and throws her gloves off, Vi just chuckles as she hears the other girl talking shit, she’s not scared. The fight ends with Vi taking the other player down again and giving her a few good punches before the refs break it up, resulting in Vi with bruised knuckles and 5 minutes in the penalty box.
***
Caitlyn is sitting on the bench, consulting Vander about substitutions, when she hears players on the bench ducking and shouting,
“Watch out!” Someone screams from the ice.
“Loose puck!” Caitlyn hears another person shout, but just as she turns-

Chapter Text
Vi saw Caitlyn’s head take direct contact from the puck. She didn’t care if she still had a minute left in her penalty, she didn’t care about the whistles and shouts from people as they were merely white noise in her head as she skated to the bench, immediately jumping over the boards and kneeling down to aid Caitlyn.
Vi gets out of the way slightly to let the trainer tend to Caitlyn’s face while the medical staff run onto the bench from the tunnel leading to the locker rooms. A lot of the team also gathers around Caitlyn and Vi as they hope to see if Caitlyn is okay.
“Give her some space guys, back up or off the bench.” Vi tells the team, standing up and shooing everyone back. Caitlyn is unconscious as Vi kneels back down at her side while the trainer keeps an ice pack pressed up against Caitlyn’s left eye, and the rest of her head is now wrapped in gauze to keep pressure on her wound.
“Out of the way!” A staff member carrying a stretcher shouts as she places the stretcher on the ground right outside of the bench. “Can you pick her up? I need her on the stretcher.”
“Yeah- Yeah uhm.” Vi says, knowing it’s not the time to get flustered by a request, but she does anyway. Vi quickly locks back into the task at hand, lifting Caitlyn up tenderly, bridal style, while supporting her head with one of her hands and her arm.
Vi walks into the tunnel and sets Caitlyn down with a level of gentleness she didn’t know she had. Letting the staff move around her to raise the stretcher so they can tend to Caitlyn whilst she’s getting brought out of the back of the arena.
Vi strips herself of her cleats following the medical staff towards the exit, “We need you to step back.” One of the medical team orders to Vi.
“But I need to go with her to make sure she’s okay!” Vi tries to explain with a panic as she tries to maintain pace with the stretcher.
“Then go to the hospital on your own, there won’t be enough room in the ambulance.” Says the staff member as Vi stops trying to run with everyone else.
She turns towards the locker room and pulls her phone out to begin to text Powder. “Vi!” Shouts Vander from the end of the tunnel by the benches, “Where the hell are you going? I need you in the game!”
Vi takes a deep breath and looks at Vander with a genuine expression, “Please, coach, I need to check on her in the hospital.”
“So you’re leaving the game?”
“If you’re letting me.”
“Yeah, go. Tell us how she is, okay?” Vander asks with a concerned and distressed look in his eyes.
Vi nods as she sprints into the locker room, ripping her jersey and pads off at a record pace as she presses the call button under Powder’s contact.
“Vi! Holy shit, is that girl okay?” Powder asks frantically as she can hear shuffling on the other end of the line.
“I dunno Pow, where did you park?” Vi responds, shucking off her gear and pulling her tennis shoes on with haste.
“What, why? You still have the whole game to play, it’s only the first period!”
“Pow!” Vi’s voice cuts through her sister’s ramblings, “Where did you park? I’m gonna need Ekko to drive me to the hospital.”
“Why can’t you drive?”
“The player parking lot takes like an extra 10 minutes to get out of. Just get Ekko to drive me there, that’s all I need.” Vi tries to keep her voice calm as she walks out into the cool night air, free from the sounds of the crowd and music out here.
“We’re in lot B, they said.” Vi hears Powder ask her partner about a million other unimportant questions before Vi hears more shuffling coming from the other line.
“Sorry about Powder.” Ekko apologizes as they continue to speak, “We’ll be out in a minute, Powder wants to come too.”
“Yeah, okay, thank you Ekko,” Vi sighs in relief as she sprints towards the overly decorated minivan in lot B.
***
Caitlyn hears shouting, she opens her eyes, but it hurts. Her vision is tinted blue and her depth of field feels wrong . She breathes in and closes her eyes, too tired to stay conscious.
***
Vi taps her foot up and down, sitting in the waiting room, chewing on her already short nails.
“So we just got her stitched up and she’s awake.” The nurse informs Vi, Powder and Ekko as they sit in the waiting room.
“Can we go in and see her?” Vi asks quickly, snapping her head up to lock eyes with the nurse.
“Yes, but just one at a time.”
Vi stands up as Ekko nods to her, and Powder hardly notices as she is back to whispering the lyrics to her music with her headphones on.
Vi treks through the short hallway and into Caitlyn’s room.
“Hey Cupcake, you awake?” Vi says, pulling up a chair to sit across from Caitlyn’s hospital cot.
Caitlyn shifts in the bed to look at Vi, bandage wrappings cover her left eye and wrap around the top of her head. Vi can see stitches on her right eyebrow and slight bruising poking at the edges of the bandage. “Did we win?” Caitlyn’s voice is hoarse as she looks at Vi with as much kindness as she can muster up in the moment.
“I dunno, the game's still going on.”
“What?” Caitlyn starts to sit up in the bed, before groaning in pain and flopping back down on the cot, “But-”
“I know, I’m the star player or whatever, but I wanted to make sure you’d be okay.” Vi smiles at Caitlyn, putting her hand on the edge of the bed.
“Why- why not just come after the game?”
Because you’re more important than the game to me “Someone needs to watch after you, make sure you don’t get in any trouble.” Vi wants to tell Caitlyn the truth, but she knows that that would be an insane thing to tell someone who you’ve known for about two weeks now.
“Why not just bring a staff member or something?”
“How about we just watch the game? I think it should be on the local sports network.” Vi changes the subject, knowing the more Caitlyn thought about it, the more she would realize that Vi wanted to stay with her at the hospital.
The two of them sit in silence as they watch the second period come to a close, the game is tied 1-1. The commentators briefly discuss Vi’s sudden absence to the game, making assumptions that maybe she had gotten injured or the nerves had got to her, Vi just chuckles at the guesses, knowing it’s because she’s got a hopeless crush on the team’s manager.
“So what’d the doctors say about your injuries?” Vi breaks the silence between them as they mindlessly watch the adverts on the TV.
“Uhm, so stitches, obviously, 5 of them to my right eyebrow. They said I don’t have a concussion, and that I will probably be able to leave tonight if my pain levels are low enough.” Caitlyn takes a deep breath, she swallows and looks at Vi who’s silently nodding and listening intently, before speaking again, “But the puck hit my left eye directly, and they said I’ve lost vision in it completely.”
“Is it permanent?” Vi asks, feeling the urge to move her and rub Caitlyn’s shoulder to comfort her.
“Yes. I haven’t gotten a chance to have my left eye with no bandage on, so I’m not sure how it’s gonna feel, but it is permanent.”
“I’m really sorry, Cait… I don’t know what to say.”
“Hey it’s okay, I promise.” Caitlyn puts her arm on Vi’s shoulder while she speaks, “Vi”
Vi snaps her gaze away from the TV screen, locking eyes with Caitlyn.
“Why’d you actually come here. It’s the middle of your first college game and you leave? Listen, I don’t know you inside and out but I do know that hockey is your everything, you wouldn’t just abandon your first game just so i don’t ‘get in trouble’.” Caitlyn keeps her gaze focused directly on Vi’s grey eyes.
Vi just stares back, neither of them breaking eye contact. She stays quiet for another moment trying to judge Caitlyn’s thoughts, and she sees it, a look of hopefulness gleams in Caitlyn’s eyes and this is all Vi needs to act. Vi leans in, right next to Caitlyn’s ear, her voice a barely audible whisper, “Why do you think, Cupcake?”
The words bring a shudder down Caitlyn’s spine and without a second thought, she pulls Vi into a kiss. Their lips and teeth clashing with one another, until they find a rhythm in the embrace of lips. The kiss is delicate but passionate as Caitlyn sighs into Vi’s mouth and she can feel Vi smile at her even with her eyes closed.
“Gods Vi! What the hell are you doing?” Vi immediately straightens in her chair, her hair frizzy and cheeks flush red from passion as her eyes snap to the door where Powder stands covering her eyes and her tongue stuck out in disgust.
“Pow, what the hell are you doing?” Vi shoots back as she stands up, trying to fix her hair and make it look like she wasn’t just making out with Caitlyn on her hospital bed.
“You guys have been in here for like 30 minutes and I was just gonna see what was going on… and, unfortunately, it seems I have got my answer.” And with that Powder turns on her heels and slowly begins closing the door, “Let me know when you’re done making out with your girlfriend!” She adds before Vi can even respond about how Caitlyn isn’t her girlfriend, the door is fully closed and it just leaves Vi and Caitlyn alone in the hospital room.
Vi and Caitlyn look at each other, both of their faces are cherry red with embarrassment and excitement before they both simultaneously burst into laughter, giggling and shaking their heads. Their foreheads meet as the laughing subsides and they look into each other's eyes, Caitlyn’s arms around Vi’s wide shoulders as they slowly lean in to kiss one another again, lips meeting much more gently this time as they merely enjoy the feeling of the contact and the moment.

Rahhhhh!!! I'm crazy, and so is chapter 8 (that's what you call a segue).

Chapter Text
Vi walks out of the hospital room, a big dumb smile on her face, and it’s not even because she just kissed Caitlyn. The Enforcers won with a third period slap shot goal from Sevika with less than a minute left to take a 5-4 lead that they held onto for the rest of the game, and even if she wasn’t playing, it still felt really good.
“Vi! You didn’t tell me you had a girlfriend.” Powder says as she jumps to feet to hug her sister tightly, “Oh and your team won, I was tracking the game on my phone.”
“Yes Pow, I know we won, me and Cait were watching it in her room. And… She’s not my girlfriend.” Vi says that last bit with hesitance, not because she’s lying, but because it’s kind of hard to explain making out with a girl in front of your sister as ‘just an awkward situation’.
“Uhuh, so you two swapping spit was just a friend thing, then? Right… I believe it.” Powder crosses her arms, “Listen, you can be gay, I will still support you.”
“You’ve literally dated more girls than me.” Vi says defensively.
“Maybe… But you look like way more of a fag, so I win.”
During their playful argument, Vi feels someone tap on shoulder and she whips around to see Caitlyn looking at her, “They just told me I’m discharged, just gotta take pain meds when I get out of here. And they said I should keep the bandages on for a day or two longer and then they recommended an eyepatch.” Caitlyn explains, her eyes slightly watery from the reminder that she now only has one functional eye.
“You didn’t tell me you’re dating a pirate!” Powder shouts excitedly from behind Vi.
“Pow!” Vi turns around and slaps Powder’s shoulder for saying something so out of pocket, turning back to Cait, about to console her and tell her not to cry but she actually sees Caitlyn laughing instead.
“I am not a pirate!” Caitlyn says in defense through her breathless laughter.
“Arr you sure about that matey?” Powder says back, covering her left eye with her hand to imitate an eyepatch.
“Powpow! Stop that. She’s been through hell today, go easy on her.” Vi is now trying to cover Powder’s mouth with her hand, who licks it and Vi wipes her now saliva covered hand onto Powder’s hoodie sleeve.
“No, truly, Vi, it’s quite fine… Your sister is quite the character.” Caitlyn says, putting a hand on Vi’s shoulder for reassurance. “And I’m sorry for, uhm- What you saw earlier.”
Both Caitlyn’s and Vi’s cheeks goes rosy at the apology, looking over to Powder who waves them off, “You’re fine.. I’ll just have to enact my revenge by forcing you two watch me and Ekko make out one of these days.” As Powder is saying that, she walks over to her partner, pulling Ekko by their chin to kiss them on the lips in the middle of the hospital waiting room. Luckily, there is no strangers there to watch teenagers kiss in the hospital.
“Eww! Powder, really? You’re so gross!” Vi snaps her hands over her and Caitlyn’s eyes, finally pulling them away when she hears Powder speak again.
“Payback, bitch!” Powder shouts, as Ekko looks more confused than anything else to what’s happening since they’ve had their earbuds in this entire time.
“Can we get out of here? I wanna go celebrate with my team, Caitlyn has to recover and you two still have to get home.” Vi points at Powder and Ekko, who is now actually listening, fearful (or maybe excited) for more makeout attacks.
“Yeah, c’mon babe, I don’t wanna drive home if it’s too dark out.” Ekko says, tugging at Powder’s sleeve. “And I hope you get better, Caitlyn, it was a pleasure.” They give a small wave to Vi and Caitlyn.
“Okie, bye-bye!” Powder says, giving Vi a kiss on the cheek, “Love you, Vi. I’m coming to all of your weekend games by the way!” She says, turning with Ekko as they head to the elevator and step inside as the door closes.
“Ahh shit… They were my ride.” Vi admits, completely forgetting that fact until it was too late.
“It’s okay, we can get a ride from someone on the team.” Caitlyn says, sitting down in one of the waiting room chairs, “Your sister sure is a… Character.”
“Insane, you mean? Yeah, I know. She’s always been like that, despite all of our efforts, it’s just who she is.” Vi slumps into the chair next to Caitlyn, looking into her blue eyes that she could get lost in, as she speaks, “It’s probably just a thing with our upbringing. Our parents died when I was 6 and she was 3, so she never really had time to have a normal childhood. Not like I did either, but at least I was older than a toddler.”
“You weren’t much older than her… I’m very sorry Vi.” Caitlyn says respectfully, offering a hesitant hand over the armrest to Vi, who almost immediately takes it and interlocks their fingers.
“It’s okay. It was a long time ago, and luckily her and Ekko have always been close. So she always had Benzo, and then when she turned 10, our uncle Silco was able to be located as our closest remaining relative, so she and him got very close.” Vi sighs, pausing her story to squeeze Caitlyn’s hand softly before continuing, “I never really was that good with other people, in and out of Juvie. Until when I was a freshman in high-school, the hockey coach saw my build and walked up to me asking if I wanted to try out for the girls hockey team.”
“Wait… I’m sorry to interrupt. But you didn’t play hockey until high school?” Caitlyn asks, bewildered by the fact that someone who had been playing hockey for merely 4 years was the best player in the nation.
“A lot of people don’t believe me when I tell them, but it’s true. I didn’t even know how to skate until then.” Vi shakes her head at the admission, looking back at Cait, “Coach Loris, I’ll never forget him. He pulled me out of a really rough time in my life, gave me a purpose, something to look forward to. He always said that he knew that I’d be the best player in the world someday. I always laughed at him when he said that. I did then, and I do now, just thinking about the words coming out of his mouth. I still don’t feel like it’s true but I try and prove it to him everyday.” Vi sniffles and rubs her eyes in her sleeve, feeling a pang in her chest thinking about her mentor.
After a brief moment to compose herself, Vi speaks again, “He died during the last trimester of my senior season, it fucked the whole team up bad, the whole school. I didn’t even touch my skates until I got the offer from PZU for a full-ride scholarship. This was the only college I would ever want to play for, if I didn’t get this offer, who knows what I’d be doing. I turned down about 50 other full-ride scholarships from some of the best schools in the nation, this school is the only one I care about in my heart.”
Caitlyn has been nodding and listening intently the entire time, letting Vi talk and work through her story. “I’m sorry… I don’t know why I’m rambling like this.”
“Hey, hey, Vi. It’s okay, I’m glad you trust me enough to share all of this. If anyone should be apologizing, it’s me, you’ve had to go through a really hard life.” Caitlyn runs her hand up and down Vi’s arm in a comforting motion.
“But that’s all to say, I wasn’t always there for Pow, so I’m trying to atone for that still. Even if it feels like I’ll never be able to fully redeem myself.” Vi earnestly admits, leaning into Caitlyn’s shoulder, as uncomfortable as it is with the armrest between them.
“I think she appreciates it, you’re doing all you can, and that’s all anyone is asking.” Caitlyn stands up, offering Vi a hand up which she offers with a small nod.
“I’m gonna call Vander, tell him how you are and then ask for a ride.” Vi says, scoffing slightly at the fact that she forgot how she even got to the hospital in the first place, “Did you want to go straight home, or I bet the team is doing a dinner somewhere.”
“We can go with the team, so they know I survived.” Caitlyn jokes as Vi calls Vander.
“Hey Vi. How’s Caitlyn?” Vander asks.
“She just got discharged actually, and- I, uhm, my ride left so we need one to get over to wherever you guys are.” Vi sheepishly admits.
“Well, is Caitlyn okay?”
“Yeah, she said she wants to go to the team dinner.” Vi looks over to Caitlyn, silently asking what she is okay with sharing and Caitlyn nods, “She doesn’t have a concussion or anything, but she does have to take pain meds when she needs to.” Vi takes a breath before speaking again, “She did lose an eye. The puck hit her square in the left eye, so she’s fully blind in that eye now.”
“I see-” The line goes slightly quiet for a second before Vander speaks again, “Tell her that I’m very sorry that happened, and I’ll be over shortly to give you two a ride to team dinner, okay?”
“Yeah, thanks coach, I appreciate it.” Vi says before Vander says his goodbye and hangs up.
Chapter 9
Summary:
“Violet.” To which Vi snaps her head to look at Caitlyn again, “What do you want from this?” She asks.
Notes:
Ok, this one is a bit later than usual, my apologies. I got distracted writing some other things and also just got busy, but I hope for the next chapter to be out in a couple days from now.
Shoutout my beta readers, @RatInvestment and @RK091407 in particular.

Chapter Text
As Vi and Caitlyn wait for Vander to arrive at the hospital to bring them to reunite with the rest of the team, they sit silently, neither of them sure how to bring up the actions that transpired between them.
Are we dating? Fuck, what even did that kiss mean to her? Was it just a moment of vulnerability? They both think, sitting across from one another in the first floor of the waiting room. Vi stands up first and gestures to her phone, “He’s here.” She says, offering a hand to Caitlyn, who takes it gratefully as she groans while standing up, still in some level of pain from her earlier injury.
They head outside and spot Vander’s 2008 grey Honda Civic, an oddly fitting vehicle for a man of his stature. “Hey guys.” Vander says as Vi ushers Caitlyn into the passenger seat as she slides in the back seats.
“Hey.” Caitlyn says through a groan as she plops into the seat. “Where are we eating?”
“Since Sevika scored the game-winner, she decided where to eat… And picked Denny’s.” Vander says with a chuckle.
“Are you fucking kidding me? Denny’s? Coach! How could you let her do that?” Vi asks, almost shouting at Vander.
“She hit the game winner, those are the rules Pink. She also said something about there being this cute waitress there. I dunno, Sevika is an anomaly, you gotta learn that.”
“Pshhh, we’re eating at Denny’s ‘cause she wants to get a number from one of the waiters.” Vi leans back in the car's headrest, surprisingly tired from the hospital.
***
As they enter the Denny’s, it is mostly empty besides a booth with two people in it and, obviously, their hockey team, who all cheer when they see Caitlyn and Vi enter.
“Kiramann!” Sevika shouts, waving the pair over to the two empty seats next to her, “You gave us a fucking scare. Do you need to wear a helmet on the bench?”
“Well, they’ve only got one eye to knock out before I’m fully blind now.” Caitlyn admits, to which Sevika shakes her head.
“Sorry to hear that. As much as I kid, being on the bench is dangerous, you didn’t get a concussion right?” Sevika asks, sincerity plastered over her face.
“No no. Besides some bruising from falling I feel fine. And you know my vision.” Caitlyn sits down, skimming over her menu, “I don’t think I’ve ever actually been in a Denny’s before.” She admits.
“Awww man, you are missing out, Cupcake. I used to live off of the grand slam back in high-school.” Vi says, pointing to it on the menu.
“Well I guess I’ll get that then.” Caitlyn responds with a slight grin on her face.
When the waitress (who, to Sevika’s credit, was quite pretty) came over to the pair, they ordered two grand slams and a couple sodas. They idly chat with Sevika about the game until their food arrives.
“Eughh… I’m sorry, Violet, but this is awful.” Caitlyn says as she swallows a bite of the eggs with a grimace.
“I know, isn’t it great? It’s not about the taste, It’s about the fact that you can get this much food for 6 bucks!” Vi says, shoving a whole sausage link in her mouth as she speaks.
Caitlyn politely pushes her plate away as she watches Vi eat before a voice comes from the person sitting to her left, “Are you eating that?” The person asks, who upon turning to face them, is Maddie, one of the starting wings on the team.
“Uhm, no, you can have it if you'd like.” Caitlyn politely responds, who Maddie then looks at in the face.
“I heard from Vander you lost your eye.” Her teammate says.
“I did.”
“Does it hurt?” Maddie inquires.
“Well, not too much, I kinda lost feeling in it, to be honest, besides a small ache. The main parts that hurt are where the bruises from my fall are.” Maddie nods along to Caitlyn, making eye contact with her remaining eye, “I’m going to have to wear an eyepatch when the bandages come off.”
“I see, I always thought that eyepatches looked great. I mean, the fact that you have to wear one is no good, but I think it’ll look good on you.” Maddie says, still holding eye contact with Caitlyn, “I suppose anything might look good on you, as a matter of fact.”
Caitlyn’s face warms from the compliment, even when she has literal bandages around her face and has just lost an eye, someone still thinks she looks good, “Thank you.” She responds, not sure where this conversation is going.
“When do you get the bandages off?” Maddie asks, leaning in to gently touch around Caitlyn’s eye bandages.
“They said to take them off in 2-3 days, depending on how my injury looks by then.” Maddie hums as she continues to gently brush her fingertips along where Caitlyn’s eyebrow would be behind the bandage, and then down, tracing the edge of the gauze where it meets her cheek. Caitlyn can’t help but blush at the soft touch being offered from the girl.
She quickly snaps out of the trance, This isn’t what I want. I can’t just fold and fall into her touch because she gave me one compliment. “I’m sorry,” Caitlyn pulls Maddie’s hand away, who to her credit, stops touching her face, “I don't think people should be touching my injury.” She tries to explain, which isn’t true, but it’s all she can think of to let Maddie down lightly.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Can’t get it infected, right?” Maddie apologizes with a smile, to which Caitlyn nods and turns away, deciding to face Vi and Sevika, who are still chatting about how the game went.
She pokes Vi in the shoulder lightly, “Whaddya need, Cupcake?” She says, turning to face the taller girl.
“I think we should get out of here, I’m very tired and need to sleep.”
“Right, yeah sure. Sevika… Can I ask a favor?” Vi says, looking embarrassed at the team captain. “I left my car in the player parking lot in the arena, can you drive us back to the hockey rink really fast?”
“Aw come on Lanes, I haven’t even gotten that waitresses number yet.” Sevika groans in protest, but gets up and slings her jacket over her shoulder anyway.
“Thanks Sevika, I owe you one.” Vi says, helping Caitlyn up.
“You owe me two, actually. I won the game too.” Sevika shoots them both a wink before leading them outside and into her truck.
***
As the two of them wave to Sevika as she speeds off and thank her for driving them back to the arena, they stand in the nearly empty arena parking lot.
“Want me to drive you home?” Vi asks, her voice a little shaky and shy, a far cry from her normal confidence. In her mind, it could be just from the nerves of what has transpired between her and Cait today, or maybe it’s just that she’s tired. Maybe it’s because she’s admitted a lot of her life story to Caitlyn, an experience that only Ekko and Powder have gotten.
“Yeah, that’d be nice, my knight in shining armor.” Caitlyn says, snapping Vi out of her trance, flashing her tooth gap with a smile as Vi gets lost in another trance, this time just staring at Caitlyn.
“Can I kiss you again?” Vi asks.
“You don’t even have to ask.” Caitlyn replies, already moving to embrace Vi, who gently wraps her arms around Caitlyn’s waist as their lips meet, slowly and content to kiss one another. They only pull back when they both need air and take a few deep breaths through giddy giggles.
Fuck, I could get used to this Vi think, offering her hand to Caitlyn, who takes it and follows Vi to her car.
When Caitlyn sits in the passenger seat and Vi slides into the driver side, she looks at Caitlyn who is looking at her as well. She breaks eye contact and starts the car as Caitlyn speaks, “Violet.” To which Vi snaps her head to look at Caitlyn again, “What do you want from this?” She asks.
It’s a simple question really and Vi has an answer too: “I-” want to kiss you until my lips hurt, and I want to wake up with your scent in my sheets and your body next to me every morning. I want to hold you when you’re crying and tell you it's going to be alright because we have each other. I want to be the reason you're laughing, and the reason you keep going even when life's hard. I want to remember every inch of your body, every scar, every curve and every hair. I want to remember your face better than I can remember my own name. But instead she settles for, “I dunno.”
Notes:
EEEEE!!! The *tension*. Also sorry about the Maddie reference, I promise she won't become an issue.
Chapter 10
Summary:
Her gaze drifts to Caitlyn as she hears her begin to talk about the goal scoring opportunities, which would be very useful, and something Vi would be paying attention to if the team’s manager wasn’t so goddamn gorgeous. But alas, the timeout ends and they skate away from the bench towards one of the face-off spots by the blue line.
Notes:
Okay I should have a few days free this week to work on maybe finishing the story...!
Thank you to @RatInvestment and @RK091407 for being the loveliest beta readers <3

Chapter Text
“That’s not a very specific answer, Vi.” Caitlyn pouts, “I can’t really do much with that.”
“I like this, Cait, a lot. But we’re both very busy and we are teammates after all.” Vi elaborates, “I don’t wanna ruin this, but I don’t wanna ruin my hockey hopes.”
Caitlyn clears her throat as Vi starts the car, “Right, yeah, I get it.”
Caitlyn doesn’t really know what she expected Vi to say, but part of her feels disappointed about the answer, even if she knows Vi is right.
***
Now not to say that Caitlyn and Vi were very productive when they were working on their project when they were at each other’s throats, but it didn’t help the productivity that now instead of arguing, they were just having lesbian make-out sessions.
But to their credit, regardless of how ‘distracted’ they would get while working on the project, they still managed to build 2 models. One was a pair of gauntlets used for hand to hand combat, and also a precision rifle, which Heimerdinger was thoroughly impressed with.
And yes, Caitlyn has an eyepatch now, and yes, she looks sexy as fuck in it (well that’s what Vi thinks anyways).
But there was no time to worry about grades or how hot Vi thinks Caitlyn is, as the hockey team has their first away game of the season, and they’re facing their rivals, the Noxus Emperors. As much as the whole team gets excited from being able to face their rival, the bus rides are never as fun as the games themselves.
***
“Wakey, wakey,” Vi whispers, teasingly close to Caitlyn’s face, “We’re here, Cupcake.” She adds as Caitlyn groggily stretches her long and slender limbs out in the bus seat.
“Yes, yes. Just- Just give me one moment.” Caitlyn sputters through a yawn.
“Well I need to be locked in from here on out, gotta show the Medarda girl up.” Vi explains.
That’s right, Mel Medarda, another freshman, was ranked second in the country coming out of high school. Right behind Vi . This gets Caitlyn out of her seat, as much as she won’t admit it, watching Vi play is extremely attractive, especially when she really has something to play for, like showing up their school’s rival, and her personal rival.
As Caitlyn follows Vi through the player entrance, she notes how pristine the facility is, even just in the tunnel leading to the locker rooms. “Damn, this place is swanky.” Vi comments as they step inside the locker room, which has full-sized player nooks and a shower room that has individual showers.
“Yeah… I knew Noxus was nice, but I didn’t think it would be this good.” Caitlyn adds, adoring the very nice dry-erase board with plenty of room for notes and gameplans, alongside a box score sheet that has all the players from both teams and their stats.
“I bet that gets you all worked up, huh?” Vi says, nodding to the analytics sheet now in Caitlyn’s hand.
“Oh shut up, like I don’t see your mouth water when you see someone in a new pair of skates.” She retorts and Vi just waves her off as she pulls her hoodie off to get dressed up in her pads.
Caitlyn wasn’t sure what she was expecting to happen between her and Vi after their discussion in the car, but having a normal friendship with her with a bit of a flirtatious edge was definitely a good outcome, and one that resulted in less stress than a full blown relationship might have. And, y’know, the whole being able to stare at Vi’s ass and muscles freely without hoping the other girl doesn’t catch her was definitely a plus.
And for Vi? She wasn’t thinking about anything except hockey in the moment, and how to beat the fuck out of the Emperors. As talented as everyone knows Vi is, she still feels like she has a lot to prove, and standards to live up to, and the fact that she left the first game early didn’t help with her need to feel worthy of the talent she has. And everything is a blur for her before game-time. Yeah, she listens to coach Vander and still is present and chatting and cracking jokes, but her mind is focused only on the hockey that she’s gonna play.
Speaking of which, Caitlyn’s voice cuts through the chatter with her stern and focused tone, “Alright, time to go everyone, they don’t do tunnel exits for the opponents, but they still announce all of the starters, so you need to be on time.”
Sevika saunters to the middle of room, leaning in and ushering everyone to get in the huddle with her as she starts her pre-game speech, “Alright, I’m gonna keep this one short. We go in, get physical and play to the game plan, don’t let your emotions get in the way, okay? We know they like to play dirty, so we match their energy, but don’t do dumb shit, got it? Enforcers on 3. 1, 2, 3!”
“Enforcers!” The whole team whoops as they follow the team captain out of the locker room and onto the bench as their names get announced by the PA announcer.
***
Vi hops over the boards from the bench and onto the ice as she gives the boards a few solid punches, skating to her spot on the ice, ready for the face-off. The puck drops and sticks collide with a thwap as the two centers wrestle for control of the puck, eventually having PZU win possession, passing the puck back to Sevika who begins the game.
Medarda is a wing, so her and Vi don’t interact a ton, but when they do, let’s just say Vi tries to hit her with a little more effort than normal.
The Enforcers have the puck and Margot passes it from the goal line up to Sevika at the blue line who fires a swift pass to Vi, in between a defenders legs and Vi winds up and slapshots the puck right into the top corner of the net with incredible speed.
“Let’s fucking go Lanes! Come on, baby!” Sevika yells, giving Vi a headbutt to the helmet in celebration as they skate to the bench to give the whole team fist bumps.
“Hell yeah!” “Good shit, let’s go!” Vi hears a few of her teammates shout as she hops over the boards and onto the bench to get subbed out.
“How does it feel?” Sevika asks with a nudge to Vi’s shoulder.
“I dunno,” Vi shrugs, “It’s just another goal.”
“It’s your first college goal, that has to be special, right?”
Vi scoffs and shakes her head, “Ehh, the game isn’t over. Maybe I’ll be excited after the third period.”
Sevika chuckles with a hum and turns back to watch the game. As the two watch, the Emperors hold possession on their end of the ice for quite a time before Medarda takes the puck behind the net and passes it out, a pass that gets returned to her, when she flips around towards the net with precision and flicks a shot straight through Renni, the goalie’s 5 hole for a goal.
“Shit…” Sevika grumbles.
“Well I got competition,” Vi says, elbowing the captain before they both get subbed back into the game.
There are 5 minutes left in the third period while the game is still tied 1-1 from the first period. Sweat beads down Vi’s forehead as her breath is ragged while she takes a gulp from the squirt bottle of gatorade, “Ok, Vi, Sev, Lest, Margot and Maddie, you are all staying in the game till the third is over.” Vander explains, pointing to the whiteboard and drawing up a play as Vi intently watches him create a solid way to hold possession and take a large amount of shots on goal.
Time ticks down as the teams play, 5 minutes.
4 minutes.
3 minutes.
And with 2 minutes left, Maddie makes an error handling the puck and Mel Medarda steals it in a breakaway. She is able to move tactically and dekes the Enforcers goalie, Renni, and then is able to locate a perfect backhand shot into the top left corner of the net, scoring a goal that gives the Emperors the lead.
And it’s a lead they didn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. “Fuck man,” Vi says, snapping her stick over her knee in frustration as the team walks back to the locker room, throwing her gloves down into her locker alongside the two pieces of stick. The rest of the team is depressingly silent as they all pack up, shower and get on the long bus drive back to Piltover-Zaun.
Vi and Caitlyn sit next to each other on the bus ride back. Vi naps with her head resting against Caitlyn’s shoulder, repositioning herself every so often by nuzzling into Caitlyn’s arm more. Caitlyn is more than happy to continue to let Vi nap on her shoulder, absently scrolling through her phone and enjoying the casual intimacy that could easily just be mistaken for Vi just being tired as shit and not caring about whether or not she was sleeping basically on top of Caitlyn. And this was the implication that the two of them were hoping to run off of to allow quiet little moments like this. These quiet little moments that both of them deeply enjoyed but neither willing to voice their enjoyment.
Notes:
Maddie always doing some shit to fuck up this lesbian relationship... Makes the Enforcers lose the game smh.
Also I promise this situationship part of this relationship won't last forever.
Chapter 11
Summary:
“Vi!” Vander shouts, stepping onto the ice and gingerly trotting towards her, his figure towering over Vi, “Not a single person on the team, in the university or in this fucking planet blames you for not winning us that gam-”
“I do.” She pushes her chest out, meeting her eyes to his, “I can’t fucking sleep, I can’t focus without thinking about how many chances I had to win the game. And I’m not gonna fuck another game up. Not like that one.”
Notes:
I have 13 chapters written, so once chapter 13 gets uploaded, expect a slightly slower posting schedule since I'll have to be posting right after I finish writing them.

Chapter Text
Vi can’t sleep, she can’t focus. All week all she’s been thinking about is the missed shots she had on goal, the plays she could have made, the goals she could have scored, and to say it isn’t bothering her is just a flat out lie. Caitlyn has asked her what’s wrong, she lies, says she’s just tired or stressed from school. Sevika asks, and again she lies, telling her it’s nothing and she’s fine.
***
Sweat beads down her forehead. Shot after shot, the stick hitting the ice and puck with a thwap, an unbreakable rhythm that Vi sets until she runs out of pucks. She starts to skate over towards the net to collect the pucks for the fifth? Time tonight, She honestly can’t remember how long she’s been taking shots at the net, but she knows she’s fucking exhausted.
“Vi!” She whips around, dropping her stick in surprise as she hears the voice shouting from across the ice to her, “Vi! What the hell are you doing out here?”
Vi squints to the dimly lit side of the arena, seeing Vander wave her down from behind the boards, “What are you doing here?” She mirrors, skating to the other end, where Vander stands.
“To write the gameplans and analytics for the game tomorrow on the whiteboard in the locker room, and then I saw your car in the lot and went in to see what the deal was.”
“I’m just practicing.” Vi explains simply.
“Go home Vi.” Vander says with a sigh, “It’s 8 pm, rest up for the game tomorrow.”
“I- I can’t do that. I can’t afford to fuck up another game.”
“Fuck up another game?” Vander’s brows go knit with confusion as Vi pipes up again.
“Do you know how many shots I had on goal in the last period? They saved 5 shots from me in the third period alone.” Vi skates back towards the pucks, flinging a few more at the net while she speaks, “And I can’t afford to miss another one.” She flings one last puck with dangerous speed directly into the top corner of the goal with precision.
“Vi…” Vander chuckles, putting his hand on her shoulder, “You are gonna fuck up again, you’re gonna miss more shots, no matter how many times you promise you won’t, you will. You’re gonna make mistakes, in the game or out of it, and so what I am gonna tell you is that holding onto your mistakes hinders you. I’ve seen you play when you’re 100% focused, and it’s something else, it’s like watching a woman possessed, I’ve never seen anything like it. And what I remember about your performance on the ice is your effort, not the dumb ‘what ifs’ and tiny misplays. I remember your goal in the first period, your perfect stickwork, your precise shot and your beautiful physicality on defense. What I don’t remember is how you may have missed a shot or two after playing for 25 minutes straight. And I wanna see you focused and locked in like your life depends on it, but this…” He gestures to her and the pucks in the bucket and in the net, “is not focused and locked in, this is hot-headed and personal. I’m glad that you care this much, I really am, but I wanna see you play, not get hung up on something that only you care about.”
Vi can’t really form a response, she just stares at him as he removes his hand from her shoulder and grabs the stick from her hand to pick up the pucks and toss them into the bucket.
He picks up the final puck and tosses it into the bucket, Vi watching in silence the entire time, mulling over his words. He picks up the bucket and hands Vi her stick as he walks off the ice. Vi absently follows him, as she gets to the door of the facility, she takes a look back to Vander who is about to enter the locker room and they lock eyes, “Goodnight Violet, see you tomorrow.”
Vi nods and offers a half smile before opening the doors and walking to her car. As she walks, she pulls her phone out, pressing the call button on the ‘Cupcake’ contact in her phone.
After a few rings, a groggy posh voice answers the phone, “Yes,Vi?”
A genuine smile creeps onto Vi’s face as she hears the voice through the speaker, “Hey Cupcake, I know it’s late but can I come by?” She asks as sweetly as possible.
“Why? We have the game tomorrow, remember?” Caitlyn asks in a confused tone.
“I know… I just really need to see you, please?” Vi asks again, her tone becoming slightly pleading, even if it’s a bit pathetic, she truly doesn’t care.
Vi can hear a huff and then a pause at the other end of the line before a response comes through, “Yes, okay, fine. How long will you be?”
“I’m heading over right now.” Vi says in response as she hops into her car, a grin spread wide across her face, no doubt audible to Caitlyn.
***
A knock comes at Caitlyn’s door, she opens it to see Vi standing there, hands shoved in her pockets, rocking back and forth from foot to foot.
“Hello Violet-” Caitlyn starts before Vi practically leaps into her arms, hugging Caitlyn tightly, nestling her chin on Caitlyn’s shoulder, having to almost go on her tippy toes to do so.
Vi takes in a deep breath of Caitlyn’s scent and it makes her smile into Caitlyn’s warm skin. It’s not a scent that is easily describable, it’s something floral and fresh but yet still natural and warm and Vi finds it extremely comforting.
“Vi-” Caitlyn chokes out as Vi realises she may be squeezing a bit too hard.
“Sorry,” She says sheepishly, even if she is anything but. Vi relinquishes her grip as Caitlyn walks back into her room as Vi closes the door behind her, sitting on the bed and inviting Vi to sit next to her.
“So why did you so desperately need to talk to me?” Caitlyn asks as Vi flops her head into Caitlyn’s lap, who starts running her fingers through Vi’s hair.
Vi takes a deep breath, rubbing her head into Caitlyn’s lap further before speaking, “I just was at the hockey rink, practicing.”
“At 8 pm?”
“Yes, now let me finish.” She huffs at Caitlyn’s question, “And Vander came in to prepare for tomorrow and he saw me shooting at the net and he talked to me. I told him that I felt awful about not scoring in the third period in the last game-”
“Why’d you feel bad about that? Us losing that game was far from your fault.” Caitlyn says, titling Vi’s head towards her so she can look her in the eyes while they speak.
“I know- but I'm upset about it, but we talked, and I just need to work past it. So that’s why I’m here.”
Caitlyn strokes her thumb down Vi’s cheek in a soothing motion and Vi just rolls her face into the contact, closing her eyes lightly as Caitlyn’s feathery fingers calm her emotions.
“I just… You make me feel comfortable and that’s what I need to mentally get over, I guess.” She explains further, her ears reddening at the admission.
Caitlyn’s hand pauses briefly before continuing its motion, heat spreading across her face as well. And it’s not heat in her face, but also in her stomach, feeling giddy and warm at Vi’s words.
“Can we just stay like this for a little bit please?” Vi asks quietly, almost in a whisper, a shy tone far from her usual voice.
“As long as you’d like,” Caitlyn replies, content with stroking Vi’s cheek and sitting in bed for as long as Vi needs.
Notes:
The fluff and also Vander being the wise old man as usual! Okie byeee

Chapter Text
Vi and Caitlyn both were extremely busy over the next few weeks, with Vi having hockey practice almost every day after classes finished and then playing 1-2 games a weekend when she wasn’t either practicing or studying. Caitlyn was always either working with Vander as she became more and more vital to the coaching staff or she would be studying for her political sciences degree. It wasn’t exactly her wish, she, in all honesty, didn’t know what she wanted to do fully, but she felt like needing to honor her late mother’s wishes of going into some form of politics.
Despite the business that both of them have been subjected to, they still find time to do things with each other. Both of them rationalize it as ‘working on stuff’ or that it’s some form of important business in their minds. They both figure that even if they both wanted to start a relationship, neither of them would have the time for it, so they decide the random late night ‘studying sessions’ and ‘hockey strategy meetings’ are just that and definitely not just an excuse to spend time with one another.
“Fuck Cait… Right there.” Vi says in a slightly muffled groan as Caitlyn massages her hands over Vi’s shoulder blades, rubbing out tension from the game the night before.
“If there were someone on the other side of that door, they’d be thinking we were doing something completely different.” Caitlyn jokes as Vi shoots her a glare.
“Of course your mind goes there, that’s probably all you think about.” Vi shoots back.
“It is not!” Caitlyn defends, her voice rising in pitch as Vi snickers at her, knowing the increase in vocal tone means she’s done her job of getting under Caitlyn’s skin.
Vi merely shrugs into Caitlyn’s hands and goes back to facing the pillow as Caitlyn continues to massage her tender muscles.
“You take too many hits, you’re so sore after every game.” Caitlyn comments as she continues the back rub.
“It’s hockey, Cait.” Vi ays, lifting herself off of the mattress to face Caitlyn, “That’s like telling a swimmer that they’re always wet whenever they finish a lap.”
Caitlyn giggles, “That’s not what I meant…” She grumbles, “I just mean, I feel like you’re searching to hit the other players is all.”
“Yeah, I am, that’s the point. The harder I hit them, the less of a chance they have of playing as good.” Caitlyn just rolls her eyes at this, knowing nothing will ever get Vi to stop playing physically. And as much as she disliked it, Caitlyn couldn’t argue with the results of the team, as they haven’t lost a game since their matchup with Emperors, as the team is now 5-1.
A few minutes of comfortable silence fall between the pair of them as Vi basks in the attention her aching body is getting and Caitlyn is content to give her that attention. After another minute or so Vi asks a question out of nowhere, “What about your family?”
The question catches Caitlyn off guard for obvious reasons as she sputters on a reply, “Uhm- I’m not really sure what you mean.”
“Like I’ve talked about my family and my past and I just don’t know anything about your family and stuff.” Vi elaborates as she gets off of her stomach and flops her head onto Caitlyn’s lap, looking up at the sophomore, “Unless, y’know, you don’t wanna… That’s fine too.”
“No no.. It’s fine, truly. I just never brought it up because you’ve had a hard childhood and I didn’t want to bring up my personal life.” Caitlyn tries to explain, her face running red as she realizes her silly thoughts.
“C’mon Cait, you know I wanna know these things.” Vi says with a soft encouraging smile, one that Caitlyn feels a pool of warmth in her stomach at.
“Yes, I know…” Caitlyn trails off, running her fingers through the buzzed side of Vi’s hair, “Well I suppose the most important thing is that I lost my mom not quite a year ago.”
“Oh, Cait,” Vi says, an apologetic expression coming across her face as she lifts her head and gives Caitlyn a gentle hug, “I’m so sorry.”
“Thank you,” Caitlyn whispers, “It’s okay, I’ve had time to think about it. It’s still different but I’m still here.” She says with a sad smile into Vi’s neck.
“Were you two close?” Vi asks innocently.
“I’d say so. We had our differences, I wanted to do my own thing, be a free spirit and she wanted me to be an uptight politician.” Caitlyn jokes slightly, “So that’s why I’m in political science, it’s a compromise to be able to experience college without being on a leash but also still honor her wishes. Well, not really, I suppose I did sort of plan on leaving everything behind when I graduated and just live far away and independently. But when she died… I felt more like I needed to honor what she wanted me to be, I want to grow up to be the woman she saw in me.”
“Well is the woman she saw in you also who you saw in yourself?” Vi asks, her facial expressions focused and her nose slightly scrunched whilst speaking to Caitlyn.
“I want to live up to what she wanted from me-” Caitlyn says before V interrupts her.
“Cait.” Vi says sternly, hoping Caitlyn can be honest with her.
“Please Violet.. I don’t wanna think about this right now.” Caitlyn says, tears welling up in the corners of her eyes.
“Yeah, okay. That’s alright too.” Vi says, wrapping her arms around Caitlyn’s waist, pulling her against her body, wiping a tear away from Caitlyn’s eye, “I’m sorry for bringing this up so quickly.” Vi whispers.
“It’s okay,” Caitlyn whispers back in a barely audible volume as she tucks herself into Vi’s chest further.
Chapter 13

“Y’know, I was just thinking,” Vi starts, scratching the shaved part of her hair, “We’ve never been on, like, an actual date before.”

Chapter Text
Can’t argue with results, right? Well the results are that the PZU Enforcers are heading to the playoffs and Vi is by far the best player on the team, the highest scorer, most assist and yes, most time in the penalty box.
Well in light of the Enforcers making the playoffs, it means two things for Caitlyn and Vi: One their hockey season will go on for a bit longer, meaning their schedules will stay busier for just a little bit longer and two, there will be a couple week gap in between now and when the playoffs start where they will be playing no games. So even if the season is a little bit longer, they will at least get some downtime before the playoffs.
“Hey,” Vi says, getting Caitlyn’s attention one day while they were sitting in the library together doing some work for Heimerdinger’s class.
Caitlyn snaps her head up from the laptop screen she was buried in, “Yes?”
“Y’know, I was just thinking,” Vi starts, scratching the shaved part of her hair, “We’ve never been on, like, an actual date before.”
“Oh… I suppose not.” Caitlyn replies, a blush appearing on her face.
“Unless you think that making out in a hospital bed or tutoring session in your dorm room count as dates.” Vi jokes.
“No, no, you’re right. A date- it sounds lovely.” Caitlyn says with a small smirk, slightly stuttering on her words from a feeling of excited nervousness.
“Yeah, because we’ll have the next two weeks off, save for practices and schoolwork.” Vi elaborates, rocking from the front two legs to the back two legs of her chair, “So when do you wanna do it?”
“Isn’t that the job of the person who asks me on the date?” Caitlyn replies with a smug smirk.
“Well… I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t think I’d get a yes.” Vi sheepishly admits.
“Why do you think I’d say no?” Caitlyn asks with some level of offense.
“I dunno! Shoot my shot first then think about what exactly that shot is after I’ve shot it.”
“Right, act first, think later.” Caitlyn says while rolling her eyes at Vi’s motto, “How about Friday at noon? We can get lunch downtown. Do you know about the Michelin star place on the corner of Hex and Talis street?”
Vi’s eyes widen at the suggestion, “You mean the Hex Street Bistro? That place takes like a year to get a table at. Isn’t it super expensive too?”
“Yeah that’s the one.” Caitlyn says with a smirk at Vi’s awe.
“Well considering Friday is 2 days from now, I’d say we’ll be able to go on our date this time next year.” Vi says sarcastically.
“Nonsense, I’ll get us a table right now.” Caitlyn says with confidence, as if she’s sure she can get a reservation within the hour.
“What are you gonna do? Call the head chef?” Vi asks sarcastically.
Caitlyn just smiles at her and says, “In fact, yes I am.”
“I shouldn't even be surprised. You’re Caitlyn Kiramman, of course you know the head chef of a three Michelin star restaurant. They’re probably like your childhood best friend or some shit.” Vi mocks again.
“He is indeed.” Caitlyn answers simply.
“You’re fucking kidding me Cait… Right, you’re joking right?” Vi responds in disbelief.
Caitlyn just raises her index finger into the air at Vi, putting her phone up to her ear, “Hello Jayce,” She says as she puts the phone on a low volume speaker so Vi can also hear the conversation.
“Caitlyn! What’s up bestie?” Jayce says enthusiastically on the other end of the line.
“I need a favor from you.” She begins before Jayce cuts her off.
“Whatever you need, I’ve got you.”
“I need a reservation at your restaurant for Friday at noon.” She says in a hopeful voice, as being rejected for the reservation right after assuring Vi that she would be able to get them a table would be quite embarrassing.
“Friday at noon… Sounds good, how many?” Jayce replies.
“Oh right, yes. Two of us.”
“Mhmmmm… Right so on a day that you usually spend all day studying going to a fancy restaurant to meet someone one on one.” Jayce says, piecing the puzzle together, “Is she hot?”
“Jayce! What are you talking about?” Caitlyn asks in a high pitched voice.
“You have a date. So, I will ask again, is she hot?” Jayce says, the smile on his face audible through the phone as Caitlyn pushes her hand over Vi’s mouth to stop the other girl from speaking.
“How’d you even know I’m going on a date with a girl? I never came out to you.”
“Listen Cait, I’m not blind. I have a gaydar, y'know.” Jayce says like it's common knowledge.
“Well my girlfr- uhm, date didn’t realise I was gay.” Caitlyn stammers as she is especially grateful that she has on hand over Vi’s mouth at this time, knowing she would otherwise get endlessly teased for almost calling Vi her girlfriend.
“And yet you got a date anyway? Man you lesbians are weird.” Jayce kids.
“Well she found out that I was gay… It’s a long story, okay?”
“Yes, right, ‘long story’ like that explains anything. So are you gonna answer my question, is she hot?” Jayce presses. Right after Jayce asks that, Vi is able to squirm out of Caitlyn’s vice grip on her mouth.
“I am in fact very hot!” She shouts, perhaps too loud for any public setting, let alone a library.
“Violet!” Caitlyn stage whispers to the girl next to her, smacking her on the wrist for such an action.
“Oh she’s here with you? How fun! Also, Violet… Why do I recognise that name?” Jayce asks himself, pondering for a second before speaking, “Wait Caitlyn is this the girl you couldn't shut up about like two months ago? The hockey girl and you talked about how she was so pretty and you really wished you could have kissed her-”
Caitlyn cuts him off with a hissing, “Shut up. You dickbag.”
Jayce merely laughs on the other end of the line, “Friday at noon, got it! Okay byeee.” He says swiftly before hanging up. Caitlyn just shoves her hands into her face, too embarrassed to look at Vi. And Vi? Well she burst out laughing.
“How you really wished you could have kissed me? That’s so cute, Cupcake!” Vi says through giggles.
“Well at least I got us our reservation…” Caitlyn grumbles as Vi pats her on the back sympathetically for all the teasing that she received.

Chapter Text
over what to wear since their phone call with Jayce on Wednesday.
This is a 3 Michelin star place, so I should be wearing something fancy, right? Well it is just lunch. And what if Caitlyn is wearing something casual… Maybe just like business casual, that’s what it’s called, right? Oh god, do I own any clothes besides hoodies, sweatpants and T-shirts? Vi is way over-thinking things, just deciding to throw on a white button-up and a pair of black semi formal sweatpants. While Vi was having a mini panic attack over her outfit, Caitlyn is not at all bothered by what she is going to wear or how to act, just a simple pair of jeans with a graphic tee under a flannel. She hops into her car and heads over to Hex Street, arriving at 11:50, expecting to be the first of the pair there and she is pleasantly surprised to see Vi already sitting down at a table, looking over her menu. Caitlyn looks Vi up and down, the way she can see the top of Vi’s collarbone, showing off toned pecs and biceps that flex slightly through the white shirt. Caitlyn doesn’t think she’s ever seen Vi in anything but a hoodie or her gameday clothes, and she is sure glad she’s seeing Vi now.
Caitlyn gives the smiling hostess a small nod before making her way gracefully down towards Vi’s table. She pulls the chair out and sits down across from Vi, who smiles thankfully at her.
“Hey,” Caitlyn simply states with a small smirk of her own.
“I got here before you.” Vi announces to Caitlyn proudly.
And would you like a gold star for that?” Caitlyn teases.
“I think a kiss would suffice.” Vi says with a wink before going back down into her menu. While Caitlyn tries to hide her blush by burying her face in her own menu.
While both of them are looking at what to order, a man comes up behind Caitlyn and puts his hands on her shoulders, causing her to jump and shriek slightly, “Boo!” He teases.
“Jayce! You can’t do that.” Caitlyn says with a slap to Jayce’s shoulder.
“My restaurant, Cait. So what can I get started for you two lovebirds.” Jayce says with a friendly smile.
“Are you not meant to be in the kitchen? It’s nearly prime lunch rush.” Caitlyn asks.
“Nah, I’d ditch my kitchen crew if it means embarrassing you in front of your date.” Jayce says, flipping through his server notebook, “Viktor’s got the kitchen held down anyway, he’s more capable than me at running a restaurant if anything.”
“Wow, pretty boy, you’re tall.” Vi remarks, looking Jayce up and down.
“6 foot 7,” He replies quickly, looking back at the two of them, “So can I get you two drinks?”
“Sparkling water, please.” Caitlyn orders.
“Coke is good.” Vi says swiftly as Jayce writes down their drinks and leaves with a courteous wave.
“So what’re you gonna get, Cupcake?” Vi says, leaning back in her chair, looking extremely relaxed and confident. The pose makes Caitlyn momentarily lose her thoughts, and Vi in that outfit, Caitlyn wants to rip it off of her, right here, right now.
Vi clears her throat with a questioning look, “Oh sorry,” Caitlyn snaps back to reality, “You just look really good in that outfit.”
Vi chuckles slightly before opening her mouth once more, “Thank you, Cupcake, but I asked what you were gonna eat, not what you were gonna eat tonight.”
Caitlyn’s face turns completely pink at the implication, stuttering while trying to get her first few words out, “I-yes.. Uhh, I was- gonna get the salmon quiche.” She finally chokes out, flopping her face down onto the table out of embarrassment.
VI shakes her head and reaches across the table to grab Caitlyn’s hand, “Don’t be embarrassed Cait, it’s cute.”
Caitlyn merely looks up and shakes her head, “Well, what are you getting.”
“Uhm, if I’m gonna be honest, I was just trying to get you to look up so that you could explain what this stuff is, because I have zero clue.” Vi admits and Caitlyn giggles and shakes her head and points out a few items on the menu and what they are. After a few minutes of explaining the extremely fancy, and in Vi’s opinion, stupid names of the food on the menu, Jayce arrives with drinks for the pair.
“Alrightttt. Are we ready to order?”
“The names on your menu are stupid.” Vi states before Caitlyn can stop her.
“Vi-!” Caitlyn tries to protest but Jayce cuts her off with a chuckle.
“You’ve got a point. Listen if I’m gonna charge 30 bucks per dish, I might as well make it sound fancy.” Jayce admits playfully.
“Well I’ll have the salmon quiche, Jayce.” Caitlyn says and then looks to Vi.
“Uhhh- I was gonna get… This one.” Vi says, pointing to a soup on the menu.
“Okay, I’ll get that started for you. And don’t worry, I’ll make sure to get Viktor to make them.” Jayce assures as he starts to walk away.
“Who’s Viktor? This is the second time I’ve heard you mention him.” Vi inquires.
“He’s Jayce’s boyfriend-”
“Caitlyn!” He exclaims, slapping Caitlyn upon the head, before clarifying, “Me and him started the restaurant together, most people don’t know that since I do most of the advertising and PR. And unlike what Caitlyn mentioned, he is not my boyfriend, we’re partners.”
“So you have a crush.” Vi teases, “How cute.”
“You two suck.” Jayce says before walking off.
“He didn’t deny it.” Vi says as Caitlyn covers her mouth with her hand as she giggles.
“That’s because he’s been head over heels for Viktor since they met.” Caitlyn explains, “He always comes up with excuses, but one of these days I have to get those two together, because the way Viktor looks at Jayce, the feeling is definitely mutual.”
***
They finish their meals and Jayce comes and cleans up the plates and reappears with the check and a dessert for the two of them to share, “Surprise. It’s a chocolate mousse cake.” He says, setting down the decadent piece of cake on the table with two forks.
“Thank you, Jayce!” Caitlyn says genuinely, popping out of her seat to give the taller man a side hug before waving goodbye.
“Talk to you later Cait, and enjoy the dessert.” Jayce says with a wave to Vi before heading back off into the kitchen.
“He got me my favorite!” Caitlyn exclaims excitedly before digging in with her fork, moaning as the first bite of the sweet hits her mouth.
“Don’t ruin your underwear just yet, Cupcake.” Vi jokes.
“You’re gross.” Caitlyn replies once she has finished chewing.
“Yep, yet here you are, going on a date with me.” Vi quips back with a wink as Caitlyn decides to ignore Vi and go back into the cake.
