If you think I'm pretty, lay your hands on me

Summary:

Hunter J is a millennial, why wouldn't he have his own private Facebook account with only a few friends in it? It’s not like he’ll ever turn it public.. right?

Notes:

I'm back with another millennial Hunter J fanfic LET'S GO!! Thanks for my awesome beta reader once again @sasugab (ao3) for sacrificing herself. As usual, the beginning of this fic started at around 2014-2016!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

As the most relied on hunter, J has to carry a heavy burden of expectations from the whole country.

A rift opens somewhere up north? J will be on the move right away, following the Association commands. A dungeon opens at the other side, far away? Don’t sway, J is already on a helicopter. J has such a busy schedule, he often sleeps and takes rest at the area the trouble was subdued, despite having his own residence. At that point, his home is basically anywhere the helicopter he rides is stationed.

Not to forget, the poor hunter has just turned into a young adult! The pressure was definitely too much for him, and if J didn’t find a way to at least lighten it soon, he knows he’ll break.

So he does what any young adult at that time would do.

Create a facebook account.

At first, he isn’t too sure what to do. He already had a facebook account, but everyone he was friends with was… well, dead. Out of the 200 people in his friend list, none was active anymore, though J was sure at least a few were alive.

He didn’t want to see the smiles etched eternally to a profile picture whose owner was long gone.

What will he do with a new account? Who is he going to send a friend request to? Is he making a new account, just to run away from his old one?

J sighs as he slouches outside the dungeon entrance covered in blood, spear resting on his shoulder. He had just soloed an urgent one, a B-tier which had its portal left open for a few days now. The assigned hunter team was not able to clear it on the first try, and the moment they heard J was dispatched here, they slacked off entirely.

The S rank sits atop a few crates, scratching his hair with bloody hands. There was already dried blood on his scalp anyways, it didn’t matter to him. J focuses on the task at hand.

He had been thinking about what he would do on the facebook account during his entire mission in the dungeon. It was a nice distraction for once, to have something to look forward to. He felt a twinge of guilt inside him. The savior of Korea, focusing on social media while he closes rifts and dungeons? The older generation would definitely critique him.

J had thought about a few things.

Post the food he eats? But he mostly eats energy bars and simple food like kimbap now… who would want to see that? The places he visits whenever he is dispatched? That didn’t exactly excite him…

Hm… excite him ?

J tries to think about something that excites him in his life.

He lives with his aunt, he auctions his dungeon and rift drops, he rides helicopters to the area he was called in…

It sounds like a John W*ck movie. But then wouldn’t I be revealing too much information?

That’s when something hits him.

Hey, what if I just go private?

The moment that line of thought passes through his head, J’s whole mood is elevated.

Yeah.. I can always stay private.

J proceeds to open his phone’s camera and holds the phone up, facing the rift.

Click!

A camera shutter could be heard.

From then on, J begins his personal gallery.

He takes photos of all the things he does as a hunter. Whether it be a meeting, travelling, or even before and after a mission, he takes them all.

Like he previously thought, it proves to be a nice distraction.

A nice way to cope for all the lives he couldn’t save. At the very least, he was able to document his efforts, to showcase that he had tried his hardest, regardless of the outcome.

Because the leaks of his heart could never save those taken by the rifts and dungeons, no matter how much blood he had poured.

Click!

The phone’s camera shutters in the helicopter. This time, his aunt is there.

“J, what are you doing?”

The man was silent for a while, hesitating.

“... Documenting my activity.”

The woman raises an eyebrow. “Ah, did Ham Seok-jeong put you up to this? What did she ask this time?”

J shakes his head in embarrassment, before he holds up his phone to show his screen to the other hunter. Of course, his embarrassment goes unnoticed.

His aunt, Hye-Kyung, initially squints, before her lips curl up in a smile.

“I see, you’ve been posting in a facebook account?”

“... Yes, but you do not need to worry, as it is not public.” J reassures her. He knows he’s already breaking several laws of conduct doing this. But hey—it’s not like the law isn’t actively being rebuilt now in this new society!

Hye-Kyung stares at him for a while, as if she’s trying to look past his mask and see Eui-Jae. But J knows he is a mere fishnet for the giant fish Eui-Jae was. At the end, the woman only nods and looks away, seemingly ending the conversation.

Of course, she could understand. Out of everyone J had left, which could be counted in one hand, it has always been her.

J sighs, and sinks back into his seat, realizing he had been sitting up straight and stiff. Huh, maybe that’s why his aunt deciphered him so easily.

Ping!

Suddenly, a notification plays out on his phone, making it slightly tremble.

The S rank picked it back up, and saw the top notification.

HyeKyung84 sent you a friend request! Accept>> [Yes] [No]

“Interesting name, HunterJJJJJJJ”

HamSuuukjeong1985 sent you a friend request! Accept>> [Yes] [No]

J snorts, yet a fond smile makes its way onto his face.

He ends up with 5 new friends in the account.

Beep…

A lone, shrill beep plays in the silent room, not too slow, yet not too fast.

A hand, finally ungloved, caresses a smaller one slowly, making sure it does not undo the bandages on it.

“I’ve been posting a bit on facebook, with pictures I took.”

The bandaged boy on the hospital bed slightly turns his head towards the source of the voice. J takes this as a sign to continue.

“Of course, it’s private–I only have 7 friends there, and they’re just the director, my aunt, and a few hunters I’m a bit close with.”

“Though recently, I’ve been inactive, since you are here.”

The bandaged hand slowly squeezed him. J chuckled.

“Ah, no, I’m not blaming you. I’m just happy that I have you now.”

“Maybe, once you make a full recovery, we’ll take a picture together. My aunt and the others would love to know about you.”

Just as much as I do , goes unspoken.

“My username is HunterJJJJJJJ. I had originally intended it as spam, but now I think of the seven Js as a sign of luck.”

“So, get well soon, so you can see what I’ve been up to.”

He feels another squeeze on the hand caressing the boy’s and gives a smile, despite sadly knowing it can’t be seen.

@ HunterJJJJJJJ

Last Seen 8 Years and 6 Months Ago .

Purple eyes stared at the screen illuminating the dark room. A knock can be heard from the floor, before he hummed.

A man wearing sunglasses—at night, and inside a dark room?—and a formal suit appears from the shadow of the table, fixing his tie and holding up a tablet as soon as he’s done.

“Sir, I’ve gotten access to the account you requested. There are 264 photos shared, with an average of 4-7 reactions per post. There are no captions given to any of them.”

Lee Sa-Young, who had spent the entirety of the day in his office inside his guild’s building, only replied with a nod. The man from the shadows, Seo Min-Gi moves next to him, before transferring the data on his tablet to the guild leader’s screen.

“... There have been no updates since… 8 years ago, Guild Leader.” The man hesitates, eyes nervously shifting towards the younger male.

Seo Min-Gi knows well what was going on. The account he had just hacked in belonged to the deceased Hunter J, Korea’s former number one hunter. It stored up a lot of media that documented his day-to-day life, and it had revealed private accounts of even the director herself.

It made Min-Gi curious as to why his guild leader had asked him to get access to it, which was thankfully easy, with the fact there wasn’t even two-factor authentication applied.

Not like that could even stop me , the suit-clad man thinks to himself

But he still questions why the guild leader wants access to it. Granted, Lee Sa-Young does seem obsessed with the deceased hunter from time to time… but wanting— accessing his private account? How did the man even find it in the first place?

Min-Gi barely holds himself back from letting out a gasp, was the guild leader a pervert!?

“You may leave now,” Sa-Young says sternly.

Recognizing the serious mood, Min-Gi straightens up.

“Yes, guild leader! Call me when you need something again.”

And with that, Sa-Young was left alone again.

“..Hyung.”

His hand reaches for the mouse, before scrolling downwards slowly.

Pictures line up his view, and he follows the path it makes. Photos of the sun, the association, somewhere high up in the sky, a few camps, J’s aunt, the director, and even Jung Bin was there. It was an endless scroll, and Sa-Young was captivated enough to go through everything up until the earliest post.

Sa-Young never sees the hide nor hair of Hunter J himself. Not even a selfie.

In the end, the Facebook account documented the life of a face never once visible.

Sa-Young sighs, leaning back into his chair.
