Chapter 1: Trouble Arises in Piltover

Chapter Text

The soft morning haze gently filtered through the tall windows of Caitlyn and Vi’s bedroom in the expansive Kiramman estate. Caitlyn slowly awoke, greeted by the warm sight of Vi, her beloved wife, nestled close beside her. This was typical of their mornings. Tangled in the bedsheets, unable to be productive without the slight groan of the other. Married life for the couple was rather easy for the Kirammans.

They each held important and respected titles within the Piltover community. Vi was actively involved in investigative work, often referred to as a "Zaun Liaison." Caitlyn, feeling the need to follow in her mother's footsteps, became a counselor, striving to maintain balance between all communities.

Their marriage became a symbol to many members of both communities, shattering a lot of stigmas placed behind both. However, although many came welcoming with open arms ready to embrace an era of peace and alliance, there was equally much pushback.

However, they were happy.

It had been two years since the Battle of the Arcane, which had left its mark on both Vi and Caitlyn themselves. But in the aftermath, through the grief and many nights of uncertainty and building, they decided it was better to be together through it all.

Six months into their marriage, their life together had finally begun to settle. It wasn’t always easy. More often than not their responsibilities pulled them in different directions, and the pressure of their positions weighed on them heavily. But at the end of each day, they came home to each other, and that was enough.

Tobias had left the Kiramman estate to Caitlyn, despite her insistence that he stay. He had simply smiled and told her that it was time for her to begin a new chapter of the Kiramman legacy. He wanted them to have the space to grow, to build something of their own, on their own terms. And so, reluctantly, she had accepted, though the decision still upset her.

Suddenly, without any forewarning, a wave of intense nausea surged through Caitlyn. She let go of her grasp of Vi’s body and bolted to their bathroom.

Not again… she thought.

The last few weeks had been strange. Not only, on top of her strange unwarranted illness but, the calmness that she thought had finally started to stay began to lift again. Tensions were starting to arise amongst the counsel as word of a new threat began to seep through the buildings.

“Again?” Vi’s voice was thick with sleep as she rushed herself by Caitlyn’s side. This was typical of Vi. Ever since they said their respective, “I do’s” Vi internalized everything she meant to Caitlyn. In sickness, and health.

Caitlyn was hunched over the basin, her breath unsteady as she braced herself against the counter.

“I guess so. I’m not sure what’s wrong with me, it’s not like you’re getting sick. This is bloody biased, don’t you think?”

Vi held her hair back and chuckled at the remark as Caitlyn jumped back down to vomit more.

“Why don’t you just take it easy today Cupcake, you’ve been working yourself to death. The council can do one day without you.”

Caitlyn shook her head, groaning.

"I can't," she muttered.

Vi grabbed a cloth and carefully wiped Caitlyn’s mouth clean.

"Yeah, you can , " Vi countered, but Caitlyn was already shaking her head again, more resolute this time.

“I can’t Violet. This is really important,” she said, “It’s about that Zaunite faction we attempted to captured last week. I can’t miss this.”

Vi sighed, running a hand down her face. How could she forget. It was that extremist group that has been increasingly active in recent months. At first, it was just some small talk. There had been the occasional group that took light to figures like Silco and Jinx, attempting to finish what they had started but, got dealt with quickly. Just as much as Piltover had wanted peace, Zaun was adamant about maintaining its state as well. However, there were some who were enraged with the outcome of Jinx’s death, leading to an uproar. Caitlyn never mentioned it, but Vi knew deep down that this was out of idolization of her sister’s destructive nature. One she felt like she had caused.

The death count started to tick up in the recent weeks, leading to an undeniable scare in both cities. Something had to be done.

“Alright,” Vi said, gently pulling her head close, “Just…try to take it easy. I don’t want you to get worse. I love you.”

“I will, I promise,” Caitlyn responded, her voice wavering with uncertainty, “I love you too, Vi,” She added kissing her partner's cheek.

She grabbed her uniform, quickly addressing her hygiene before bolting out the door. She couldn’t be late. Not for this.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“…The attack on the bridge was the third incident in two weeks,” Counselor Shoola added, impatiently tapping her fingers on the table. “We attempted to capture the perpetrators, but we were unsuccessful. And still, we have no solid leads on the faction responsible?”

Although she couldn’t shake all the mysterious nausea, Caitlyn forced herself to focus.

“We have suspects,” Caitlyn corrected, “But we don’t have proof that this faction orchestrated all of these attacks.”

A scoff from Counselor Salo came out cold.

“They’re Zaunites. What more proof do we need?”

Caitlyn looked at him filled with disgust.

Do they forget who she is married to? She thought.

“What is that supposed to mean, Counselor Salo?” Caitlyn said, eyeing him.

The room fell into tense silence. Salo leaned back in his chair, expression unimpressed. Unfortunately, this wasn’t out of the ordinary. Even with Sevika, a Zaunite, alongside Caitlyn who was married to one, the stigma stood hard. This had been a problem that Caitlyn had been trying to work out since accepting her position.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

4 Months Prior

“I told you, they don’t change!” Vi said as she paced their bedroom.

“I will not accept that!” Caitlyn said, throwing her hands.

“I can’t believe you became a part of them!” Vi said, approaching her closely, “After everything they’ve done? To us. To you?”

Caitlyn could see it in her eyes. This wasn’t just anger. It was hurt. Deep, unshakable hurt.

“I know your mom was a counselor, and she was a good woman, but she let Zaun and its people suffer for years. Years, Cait!” Vi said, her voice raw now.

Caitlyn was also now crying.

“I love you… so much… I will not allow them to continue to disrespect where you’re from, and your people. You have to let me do this. I know I can make a difference.” Caitlyn said, taking up space in Vi’s bubble.

Vi had softened then, stepping forward and resting a hand on Caitlyn’s arm. But the doubt in her eyes lingered.

“Violet?” Caitlyn said, lifting Vi’s face.

“Hm?” She said, her face filled with tears.

“I promise. I’m taking this role for you. For us. I want to be in a position where I can actively make change. This is the only way I know how.”

But Vi didn’t look reassured. She only looked… sad. Her grip on Caitlyn’s arm loosened before she slowly turned away, eyes unfocused, staring into the distance.

Her voice was barely above a whisper when she finally spoke.

“...Will you change?” She quietly croaked out.

Caitlyn was taken aback by the remark.

“Why would you even…” Caitlyn trailed off as she watched Vi’s fingers hovered over the spot on her stomach. That’s where Caitlyn had driven the butt of her rifle into her ribs.

“Vi…” Caitlyn whispered, reaching for her, but Vi took a step back.

“I know you mean well,” Vi said, voice thick with emotion, “but I need to know… will you change?”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Salo exhaled sharply, folding his hands on the table in front of him. “It means exactly what it sounds like, Counselor Kiramman,” he said, voice clipped, “We’ve spent weeks chasing ghosts, and yet, the attacks keep happening. Perhaps we should consider whether we’re looking in the wrong places.”

Caitlyn glared as she stood up and began to approach him.

“You’re suggesting that Zaunites within our own ranks are to blame,” she stated flatly.

Her gaze flickered toward Sevika. They had their differences during the war. Neither of them would ever deny that. However, Caitlyn had made a very loud decision when she took her position. One of her first acts had been to ensure that anyone, from either city, had the right to serve within Piltover’s government. It was essential.

Caitlyn, horrified, asked, “Does anyone else on this council stand by these remarks?”

The room fell into an uncomfortable silence.

“Counselor Kiramman,” Sevika said, her tone cool and assertive, “May I interject?”

“Of course.”

Sevika leaned forward slightly, her eyes sharp. “We’ve failed to capture those who might be involved in these attacks. Whether they’re Zaunites or Pilties, it doesn’t fucking matter. All we know is that they have excess Hextech gems that weren’t properly contained or destroyed after the war. That’s what we need to control if we want to prevent further chaos.”

Caitlyn felt a knot tighten in her stomach as Sevika spoke. The mention of the Hextech gems stirred memories of her last conversation with Jayce, where he entrusted her with a small cache of the gems, believing they could be used for good.

"Hextech was meant to be a gift. Not a weapon. Not a threat. It can still be more than they think."

She hadn’t known in what way but kept guard of them in her nightstand. Something she still didn’t have the courage to tell Vi about.

Only as a last resort. She thought.

“Sevika’s right,” Caitlyn said, trying to regain control of the conversation. “We need a plan to secure those gems and destroy them. That’s final. We take control of the stones, no vigilante from either community will continue their chaos.”

“Let me do this.” Vi interjected as she opened the door causing heads to turn.

“Vi?” Caitlyn said, approaching her.

“I know the lanes better than anyone, and I am not a risk. I know I can find more about this.”

Caitlyn hesitated, her heart racing as she looked around the room. She then turned to her wife as she rubbed her wedding ring.

She knew Vi.

She knew she was strong.

She knew she could handle this.

"Are you sure, Violet?" Sevika asked.

Vi’s jaw tightened. "This is for everyone’s safety."

Caitlyn then turned back and sat in her seat, “All in favor of Violet Kiramman to lead a task force of enforcers to investigate on behalf of Piltover.”

Vi smirked at her. She was unable to hide her amusement. Caitlyn never passed up an opportunity to emphasize her full name, and Vi had long since decided to find it endearing rather than annoying.

One by one, hands began to rise in support, though Caitlyn noticed a few reluctant nods among them. Salo’s hand remained down, his expression unreadable.

“Then it’s settled,” Caitlyn declared, pressing forward. “Vi will lead the operation, but she won’t be going alone. I’ll be assigning our top enforcers to accompany her. Only officers with the best field experience, trained in hextech combat and counter-surveillance.”

Vi’s grin faltered slightly, a flash of irritation in her eyes. “Cait-”

“It’s non-negotiable,” Caitlyn interrupted, before holding her mouth.

Shit, not again.

Vi’s irritation vanished the second Caitlyn’s face twisted, her hand flying to her mouth.

“Shit,” Caitlyn muttered under her breath before bolting from the room.

Vi didn’t hesitate. She was on her heels instantly, ignoring the confused murmurs from the remaining council members.

Caitlyn barely made it into the restroom before her legs buckled, and she collapsed to her knees. She was left heaving into the toilet.

“Hey, hey,” Vi murmured, kneeling beside her and gently gathering Caitlyn’s hair in one hand, “I’m starting to get worried about you Cupcake. You’ve been non-stop throwing up for weeks now. What’s up with that?”

Caitlyn let out a weak chuckle between breaths. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, giving Vi a concerned looked.

“I could ask the same thing,” she added.

Caitlyn leaned her head against Vi’s shoulder as she sighed.

“I think I’m just stressed. This has been a lot more than I could have ever imagined. Now I’m shipping my wife off into unknown danger.”

Vi let out a soft chuckle while resting her chin against Caitlyn’s head.

“I’ve handled worse, Cait, You know that.”

Caitlyn huffed, her breath warm against Vi’s collarbone.

“That doesn’t make me feel any better.”

Vi pulled back slightly to look at Caitlyn’s face. Her fingers traced gentle circles over Caitlyn’s knuckles.

“I promise you, I’ll be safe. I’m not some reckless kid anymore… I’ve got too much to come home to.”

Caitlyn searched her eyes, looking for any sign of doubt. But Vi was steady, firm.

“I love you,” Vi said softly as she leaned in closer.

“Wait, don’t kiss me! I just threw up…” Caitlyn protested as she scooted away.

“You think I give a shit?” Vi said as a smirk was playing on her lips. She brushed a strand of hair behind Caitlyn's ear before kissing her passionately.

Finally, Caitlyn whispered, out of breath, “Just come home to me. Okay?”

Vi smirked, holding her face. “Always.”

Notes:

hi!

welcome back for chapter 2! thank you for the support on chapter 1! i have been pretty nervous about writing a post-canon type of fic. i am having to really consider the complexity of how to make a new threat alongside deciding what characters are like in the post-canon universe. it is stressful!

alongside the fact that i am a full time college student and grocery store worker... anyways! the maladaptive daydreaming gets me every time and i unfortunately circle myself back to writing. so here we are friends.

i linked a playlist below too which is stuff i consumed while brainstorming this fic!

thank you for the support!

Caitlyn stood in front of the mirror holding a frown. She was attempting to adjust the waistband of her trousers with no luck. No matter how much she tugged and shifted in them, they just didn’t sit right.

It was strange.

Confusing.

Vi leaned against the door frame, watching her wife struggle. She didn’t need to say anything to know Caitlyn was already overthinking whatever was going through her head.

“You’re so…” Vi added, staring at her longingly in the mirror, “…beautiful.”

Caitlyn huffed, rolling her eyes as she turned to face her. “Ha ha.”

But the humor faded as she looked down. Her frown deepening.

Vi shrugged, offering a lopsided grin. “It probably just shrunk. That washer kind of sucks.”

Caitlyn exhaled sharply while her fingers tightened around Vi’s.

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s not that.”

“Then what is it?” Vi asked, looking at her suddenly concerned.

Caitlyn remained silent whilst her fingers ghosted over the waistband.

“Cait?” Vi added.

“I…I don’t know… ” Caitlyn’s voice trembled as she turned. Without warning, another wave of nausea washed over her causing her to bolt.

Again? Seriously? Shit.

“Vi-” Her voice was strangled.

She barely made it to the bathroom before she dropped to her knees.

“Cupcake?” Vi’s voice was laced with concern. She hurried to Caitlyn’s side attempting to keep the vomit from dripping down her face, “You’re scaring me really bad right now.”

Caitlyn kept vomiting before she was able to control her breathing.

“I don’t want you to leave tonight, if I’m honest,” Caitlyn admitted, turning towards her. She couldn’t contain the emotion that had been bubbling. It was becoming too difficult to mask.

Vi wrapped her arms around Caitlyn, pulling her into a warm embrace.

“I can’t seem to shake whatever this is and…” she continued, “... I’m nervous. I know you’re strong, but what if, they are stronger?”

Vi pulled back to meet Caitlyn’s gaze.

“I promised you when we got married that I would always come back to you. And for the sickness, can you promise me you’ll see a doctor while I’m on this mission? Please. I can’t bear to watch you like this.”

Caitlyn's heart ached at Vi’s plea. She knew deep down she was right.

“I don’t want you to worry about me while you’re out there. You have enough on your plate.”

“I can’t help it,” Vi insisted, her brow furrowing. “You’re all I have left.”

Caitlyn’s heart pulled at that remark. Vi had lost everything once before. Her parents. Vander. Powder. And even after clawing her way back to something resembling a life, Caitlyn was the only constant she had. The only person Vi trusted enough to hold onto.

She knew if she didn’t say yes to seeing a doctor, Vi wouldn’t complete this mission. No matter how much it meant to anyone, Caitlyn was her number one priority.

“Okay, I promise… I’ll go see someone,” Caitlyn said, finally steadying her voice, “You should…um… finish getting ready.”

Vi smiled softly, a mix of admiration and worry in her eyes. She reached for Caitlyn’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“Will you be alright while I’m gone? I can ask your dad to come around if you need the company.” Vi said.

Caitlyn hesitated, her fingers tightening around Vi’s. She wanted to say yes. However, she didn’t know what was honest to god wrong with her. She didn’t need her dad also being worried about her.

Nothing was making sense. She knew everything happening at once wasn’t a mere coincidence.

It couldn’t be.

“I’ll manage.” Caitlyn said as she chuckled, guiding Vi back to their bedroom, “Now you need to get going.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Vi took a deep breath as she stood in front of her squad of enforcers.

Their mission was abundantly clear, and yet it wasn’t.

Find out who possesses the stones and destroy them as soon as possible.

However, it had been nearly a week and still, nothing. She talked to those hanging out on the street. In passageways only Vi knew how to access. Even former inmates Vi used to know. Still, nothing came from it. She knew that meant the threat was influential. People are fearful to talk when they know it can easily be traceable.

This was going to be harder than she thought.

As she made her way through the bustling streets of Zaun Vi could only think of Caitlyn. She just couldn’t shake off the feeling something was seriously wrong. All she wanted to do deep down was to take care of her wife. Yet, she knew that this was the best way to do that for her.

Not now Vi, we need to come back with a lead. Remember that. Cait promised she’d check out her illness. She’ll be fine.

“Alright, team,” Vi said, shaking off her worries. “Let’s move out. Remember, cut the bullshit. Follow my lead. And don’t get yourself killed. ”

The group of enforcers exchanged glances. Even after all this time, it was still strange for some of them to take orders from a Zaunite. Vi approached these things less by the book, more by gut instinct. It’s what you had to do when you were from the undercity. Fewer regulations. More that could go wrong at the snap of a finger.

Vi pulled her hood up as she stepped into the dimly lit bar, the heavy scent of smoke and cheap alcohol hitting her immediately. The place was packed, filled with the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and just enough drunk patrons to spill valuable information.

This place reminded her so much of the The Last Drop

Of Vander.

Of her dad.

Vander had been the one who really taught Vi everything there was to existing in a place like the undercity. From fighting, to street senses, and finally one she was actively working on daily: knowing when to shut the fuck up.

In almost everything she did, he was there with her in spirit. Even in his absence, she knew she had to remember all the lessons he taught her to make her job smoother and more manageable. There was so much she needed to account for back home.

Vi walked around doing her best to blend in, trying to not stare too much as her fellow enforcers blended undercover in the surrounding areas. She wasn’t confident that the culprit leading this task was here, but was fairly certain someone knew where they might be.

She approached the bar and ordered a drink, taking a moment to listen to the conversations nearby.

“Oi, Vi! Or should I say now, ‘Mrs. Kiramman’,” A big, scrawny man teased, leaning against the bar with a smirk.

“Oh, psh,” she replied, rolling her eyes and lightening the conversation. This was exactly the kind of person she hoped she’d encounter. Luckily, the last name only caused a few heads to turn.

Nothing too suspicious.

Good.

“You know I’ll always know you to be Vi, the girl who punches first and asks questions later.”

Vi chuckled at the remark.

“Didn’t realize they still had you back here babysitting the lot, Harv,” Vi said, shoving Harv’s shoulder from across the counter.

“Only part-time. The real kicker is who has to cover for me when I’m not around!” Harv cackled

Harv was someone Vander had interacted with when she was a kid. Their relationship had always been strictly business, but it gave her some comfort knowing she could probably trust him. With that trust, she could uncover some valuable information.

Taverns were always a melting pot of information. It was only a matter of time…

“Hey, Harv-” Vi said nonchalantly.

“Hm?” he replied, tending to the patrons around her.

“You think you could do me a favor?” Vi asked, slipping a hefty bill onto the counter.

“What kind of favor are we talking about, eh?” Harv said slowly grasping the dollar bill, turning his head to scope the area.

“Know anything about the recent attacks?” she whispered, downing a shot of the drink Harv had just set out for her.

Harv's smile slowly faded into a frown.

“Attacks, aye?” he replied, his gaze darting nervously again around the room. “I think we should chat when I’m off shift. Got a few hours to spare?”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn took the rest of the night to sleep. However, she found it nearly impossible to sleep, especially in circumstances such as this.

Every creak of the house made her heart race, reminding her that her wife was out there, potentially in danger. Potentially hurt.

No. Someone would have alerted them if she was hurt.

The task group Caitlyn had sent with Vi had been top of the chain, routinely inspected, and passed every combat trial with soaring colors. She knew that Vi was in the best hands possible.

She couldn’t help but worry. The council didn’t even know to what extent of power this vigilante group had already gained. Without a record of the exact amount of crystals they possess, it could be fatal.

The anxiety gnawed at her, refusing to let her mind rest. Days passed, and still, there was no word from Vi.

To make matters worse, the sickness had not gone away as she had hoped it would. It couldn't just be stress anymore. She tried everything. Every over the counter medication, every possible book of knowledge left behind in the Kiramman estate. She didn’t know what it could be.

Fuck.

She didn’t want to see a doctor either. Not because she didn’t care about her health, but she was afraid it might be worse than either of them could’ve imagined. Finding something out like that without her wife, not knowing she was safe or not, gnawed at Caitlyn. She just wanted to know where she was. She wanted to know everything would be alright.

Remember. You promised her. It’s going to be okay. She is going to know whatever it is that is wrong with you because she is going to come home. She promised you that. Remember.

Caitlyn inhaled deeply. She tried to steady her racing heart but it proved harder than she thought. It was time to face the music. She couldn’t let her anxiety spiral any further; she needed answers. Now. With a firm resolve, she decided to call a doctor.

"We can get you in today Councillor Kiramman, if that works with you." The nurse said through the phone.

"Yes. Of Course. Thank you," Caitlyn sighed before taking her coat. Luckily, that still fit, she jokingly told herself.

“Okay, let’s do this,” she murmured to herself before stepping out into the busy streets of Piltover.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“So they have people posted here, here, and here. I reckon the raid will happen tonight. They plan to hit the convoy transporting the Hextech gems that are going to be destroyed,” Harv said, taking off his work apron outside of the bar.

“And remind me, how do you know this?” Vi asked raising her eyebrow.

“You deal with enough drunk patrons to know they unfortunately speak super loud,” he replied.

“Do you have any idea as to what their motive is? What are they trying to accomplish out of this?” Vi asked.

She remembered how much Zaun has suffered since growing up. How could people still be advocating for the violence that caused so many people to die? Who could ever want that same suffering?

Yet, she oddly understood.

That’s exactly how she felt before meeting Caitlyn.

“They think they can get rich quick or start a revolution, I guess. But mostly, they just want the power back where they deem fit,” Harv shrugged. “The gems hold a lot of sway in this city, especially with the council still reeling from the last war.”

“But why? We are finally starting to see things calm down between the two. Why harm innocent bystanders.”

“Well, it might be easy for you to say. Zaun is always going to have someone who feels like Jinx, or even Silco for that matter, was robbed of their full potential. Shimmer being gone has it's consequences and the gems are the "new era" for many people. Trust me, I’m on your side, I finally have been able to keep this business steady after the war. I don’t want hell to break loose but, at the same time. I also understand ‘em.”

Vi sighed, running a hand through her hair.

“A couple lives lost to some are a simple price to pay for their own freedom,” He added.

She knew exactly what he meant. Still, although progress has been made, Zaun was still treated as second nature and many pressed to be independent for that matter. It was only a matter of time before a certain group of people grew impatient waiting on Pilties to fully embrace all people.

They were going to make sure Zaun was here to stay. No matter who they had to kill in the process, even if it meant turning on their own.

“So, what do we do? We can’t let them just destroy Piltover with those crummy gems.”

Harv leaned in closer, lowering his voice as he scanned the area.

“If I were you kid, I’d make sure you’re set to brawl. You’re going to have to fight a few guys to delay their communication. You’d be surprised how quickly plans fall through when not everyone is posted where they need to be.”

With that, Vi quickly gathered herself.

“I owe you.”

“Don’t worry about it. Just promise me one thing-” he said, grabbing Vi’s arm. She looked up at him, surprised by the intensity in his gaze.

“Don’t act a fool. I know that Piltover wife of yours is really trying to make some change for us Zaunites. Without you, I fear that won’t happen.”

With a nod, Vi promised herself to stay focused on the mission at hand.

Vi walked back into the tavern, nodding casually at the enforcers as she regrouped her squad. She could feel the tension in the air, but she kept her demeanor relaxed.

“Alright, listen up,” she said, her voice steady. “There’s going to be a raid tonight, and we need to move out now. Are you all ready?”

Caitlyn stood outside the clinic, the weight of uncertainty pressing down on her shoulders. This was more stressful than she could’ve ever imagined. She was a bloody councillor for crying out loud and yet, stepping into a place with concern etched on her face about her health was nerve wracking. She took her well-being very serious. More serious than the average person.

Since the war, she had spent much time away from any political activity to fully recover after loosing her eye and to address her stab wound. It was fairly ugly at first. She cried often from the pain. She felt changed with not much certainty of the future. Luckily for her, Vi made the entire process as comfortable as possible, nursing her to health the entire time. Sticking by her side even when she didn't need it.

“I like the eye-patch you know,” Vi said as she gently placed the eye patch over Cait's damaged eye, her lips curling into a mischievous grin.

Caitlyn took a long look in the bathroom mirror and sighed. She knew she didn’t have to wear it. Her eye no longer functioned, but she could easily use a prosthetic and pass it off. Still, she felt… embarrassed. Ugly.

“I look like a pirate.” Caitlyn said, covering her eye attempting to hide it.

Vi was quickly to pull her hand to her cheek, caressing her.

“A sexy one at that. Don't ya think?”

Caitlyn couldn’t help but burst into a small laugh as Vi helped her back to their bed.

“Oh, shut up.” Cait said laying down.

“You know you love it,” Vi said sitting on the edge of the bed.

“I know one thing that’s for certain…” Caitlyn said veering off.

“Now, what is that Cupcake?”

“That I love you.”

Vi was taken aback by the remark. There was always the implication there, but she had never heard it from Caitlyn’s lips. Not until now.

“You…” Vi said nervously, “... Love me?”

Caitlyn’s lips curved into a small, almost teasing smile.

“Of course I do.” Caitlyn said, grasping Vi’s hand on her bed, "You never fail to make me laugh, even when I’m feeling utterly hopeless."

Vi’s heart clenched at the rawness in Caitlyn’s voice. She looked down at their hands again.

“Do you… feel the same.... do you, love me?” Caitlyn said nervously.

She glanced at their hands again, the pulse of Caitlyn’s touch grounding her. She swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. A small grin lifted from her cheek.

“I… I do.”

Caitlyn’s eyes softened, relief flooding her expression.

“You do? You’re not just saying that because I mentioned it, are you?”

Vi nodded, a slight tremble in her own hand betraying her composure.

“Yeah, I do.”

Caitlyn’s lips parted. There was a shy smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as she leaned in a little closer.

“It’s funny, isn’t it? We’ve been through so much, and yet… it’s taken me this long to actually say it."

Vi’s breath caught as Caitlyn’s eyes searched hers.

“You were waiting for me?”

“I was… afraid,” Caitlyn admitted quietly, “Afraid that maybe... it wasn’t what I thought. But now, I know. I finally know what I feel.”

Vi reached out, cupping Caitlyn’s cheek gently, her thumb brushing against the soft skin there.

Vi leaned in carefully, trying to be mindful of Caitlyn’s injuries. Her movements were slow, hesitant, as if afraid she might break her. But the moment their lips met, everything else faded- the pain, the fear, the weight of any unspoken worries.

It was just them.

Caitlyn was suddenly pulled out of her thoughts.

“It’s alright. Just breathe.” Caitlyn whispered to herself. Taking a moment to gather her thoughts, she pushed the door open, hoping not to turn any heads. Unfortunately, with her status, there were quick glares.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

Caitlyn forced herself to walk to the reception desk, her heart pounding in her chest.

Get it together, Cait.

“Name?” the receptionist asked, staring at their screen.

“Caitlyn Kiramman.” She tried to whisper, but it was loud enough for those weren’t looking to certainly look.

The receptionist suddenly looked up, shock painted across their face.

“Councillor-”

“Please, just call me Caitlyn,” she interrupted, her cheeks flushing under the weight of scrutiny. She could feel the whispers beginning to circulate around the waiting room, and the last thing she needed was to draw more attention to herself.

Being a Kiramman always had its perks for sure but more often than not, she wished to understand what life was like without the status. She wondered if her and Vi would ever be able to accomplish that. She knew her duty of bringing change wouldn’t allow her to stay in the dark, but sometimes she wondered. Could she be happy, even in Zaun, in a little home with Vi and maybe a few children they had taken in from the streets.

She wondered if they would ever get to that level of peace. Maybe someday.

The receptionist nodded, quickly composing themselves.

"Of course, Caitlyn. Please have a seat, and someone will be with you shortly."

Caitlyn turned and scanned the waiting room. Every chair except one seemed to be preoccupied. She found her way to the empty spot, pulling her coat further over her shoulder.

As she sat, her eyes fell upon a woman with striking pink hair handling a newborn. For a moment, Caitlyn’s heart stopped. The features the two shared were uncanny. She shook her head only to realize that, that wasn’t her Vi.

The woman stopped and looked up, catching Caitlyn’s stare. Caitlyn awkwardly turned her head, picking up the newspaper beside her. It wasn’t Vi. But she so desperately wanted it to be.

“Caitlyn,” A nurse called out.

Caitlyn poked her head out of the zine in her hand.

“A doctor is ready to see you.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“They’re expecting troops at the southern checkpoint, and more are coming in here. That’s all I’ve got for you. Take 'em down, stay sharp, and for Piltover’s sake, try not to make a damn scene. We’ve worked too hard to keep these peace treaties in place.”

The group of enforcers looked together amongst themselves.

“We had a duty to uphold it as best as we can. If need be, use force, but if possible, stealth is going to be our best friend tonight.”

The group of troops moved quickly, trying to not bring much attention through the streets of Piltover. The air was covered in a thick fog and subtle voices that laid low.

Vi took lead, guiding the enforcers through some back ways she had picked up during her time robbing from Pilties. Not her proudest moment but, hey, she had to do what needed to be done for her family at the time. With that, she knew these streets with ease and it was going to come in handy tonight.

Let’s just get this over with.

Up ahead, there were several people posted up near the dock. Huddled back between the crates, two figures spoke in hushed voices.

“Any minute now, boss says there’ll be a large truck coming in. It’s carrying those crystals.”

The second figure tensed.

"Isn't it incredible?" The first figure added

“Why are they coming all the way out here then?"

A beat of silence.

“Piltover has some tech out on the little islands just slightly beyond here that can dismantle and destory these gemstones”

“Fuck.”

“I know.”

A third voice cut through the shadows.

“That’s exactly why we’re here, isn’t it? To stop it”

"No shit."

"Sorry- just clarifying."

From the darkness, a man stepped forward, the dim light catching on the silver edge of an old hextech blade strapped to his hip. One that typically was found on the hip of an enforcer.

“Piltover’s too afraid of what they don’t understand. Too afraid of letting go of their control. So they’ll break and bury whatever might give us a shot as decency. They’ll tell themselves they’re doing the world a favor…” His gaze swept over his men, a slow smirk curling at the corner of his lips, “...But we know better.”

The first figure shifted. He was now glancing at the ship anchored just beyond the docks.

"You see that ship out there?" The boss said

"Yeah" One of the figures said.

"That there is gonna be our escape. They are simply waiting for us to signal them when we got the loot eh? So, let's make this quick."

“Boss, if this goes south-”

“It won’t dammit.”

A heavy silence followed. No one dared to challenge him.

“They want to destroy what could change everything. The last of the old hextech. True hextech. Not the shit scraps they parade around in their council chambers. The kind of power that doesn’t just protect a city. It defines it. Shapes it,” The boss continued.

He took a step closer.

“Piltover has had its turn. It's time we finish what Silco, and Jinx, started. Those crystals are the next best thing to shimmer.”

The second figure exhaled, hesitant but resolute.

“Then what’s the plan?”

The smirk deepened.

“We take over the cargo inside and kill all those who stand in our way.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“I’ll have you know that it is not everyday I get the honor of treating a Councillor, Caitlyn.”

Caitlyn let out a warm smile in response as she took a seat on the examination table.

“So tell me,” She went on, “What seems to bring you here today.”

Caitlyn exhaled, bracing herself.

Caitlyn’s fingers tightened around the fabric of her coat as she forced herself to meet the doctor’s gaze. It was absurd. She’d survived war, fought on the front lines, stared death in the face more times than she could count. And yet, here she was, sitting in the cold, sterile quiet of a clinic, feeling more vulnerable than she had in years.

“Well I…” She started with her head in the ground, “Well, I’ve been feeling rather off lately…tired, a bit queasy in the mornings. I get these headaches that refuse to sod off. I thought it prudent to have a proper check-up. Just in case. You know?”

The doctor hummed, making a note. “Has anything in your diet has changed?”

Caitlyn sat up trying to recall. With Vi living with her, she had tried so many new things. It was hard to keep track of. It was one of the simple pleasures of having someone like Vi in her life. She always pushed Caitlyn to try things that were always deemed to "far outside" the norm for her growing up. She never knew how much she was missing out.

God, did she miss her wife.

“Not particularly,” Caitlyn said, “I eat well enough, though I suppose I’ve not had much of an appetite as of late.”

The doctor continued to jot down a couple notes. Caitlyn looked up at her anxiously.

What could she be writing down?

“Hmm. Any recent stress?”

Caitlyn sighed at the remark.

“Much. With the state of Piltover and the difficulties of my job, trying to lead us out of conflict. I’d say, it’s rather stressful.”

The doctor smirked, shaking their head.

“Right. I can only imagine the level of responsibility you hold, Caitlyn. That would certainly stress me out. Are you experiencing any other symptoms?

Caitlyn hesitated. “… I could go on, but primarily the nausea and also, I think I’m-”

Caitlyn looked down at her trousers. She had to borrow some of Vi’s since hers weren’t fitting her properly.

“I think I’ve put on a bit of weight. My clothes aren't fitting quite right. Though, it could just be a dodgy washing machine, to be fair.” Caitlyn said slightly smiling. Darn, Vi.

The doctor nodded, writing something down.

“Alright, let’s start with the basics. That’ll give me a good basis for how I can best treat you. I’ll take your blood pressure, listen to your heart, and we’ll run a few tests. Including blood work, just to cover our bases. Is this all right with you, Mrs. Kiramman?”

Caitlyn gave a curt nod.

"Whatever you think is necessary. I just need peace of mind knowing what's going on, especially for my wife."

The doctor smiled at her warmly.

“Good. Lie back for me, would you?”

Caitlyn did as instructed, but something gnawed at her, deep in her gut. Something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

Hopefully she’d have an answer for Vi soon.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

The first guard barely had time to react before Vi’s arm wrapped around his neck. Her grip, knocking him out in mere seconds. She dragged him down behind the crates, attempting to muffle any noise.

One down.

A second guard rounded the corner, oblivious to the danger until a gloved hand clamped over his mouth, cutting off any chance of a warning cry. The blade pressed against his throat. Within moments, he was unconscious, his body lowered silently onto the damp wooden planks.

Further ahead, two enforcers worked together, one sweeping a guard’s legs out from under him while the other drove an elbow into his temple. He crumpled without so much as a groan.

Vi stayed low, her breath steady.

No alarms.

No gunfire.

Just precision.

She crept up behind another guard keeping her body silent. At the last second, he seemed to sense something. However, he was too late. Vi struck, wrapping her arms around his torso and lifting him clean off the ground. A sharp twist, and he was out cold. She let him drop taking the body in her arms to not alert those around.

They were cutting through the perimeter with alarming ease.

Almost too easily.

I’ll be back with Cait in no time. With important intel and possession of those involved with the attacks. She'd be so proud, wouldn't she?

Vi wiped her hands against her vest, exhaling sharply.

They were in control.

This was working.

They just had to-

Something caught her eye. There was a figure. It stood at the edge of the dock.

Vi froze.

Her heart stuttered in her chest as her breath caught.

Caitlyn?

She was just standing there. Watching.

No. That didn’t make sense. Caitlyn was home. Safe. She wouldn’t-

Vi blinked.

The figure was gone.

Come on Vi. Keep it together. What's wrong with you?

Vi continued the mission at hand shaking her head, trying to focus. Luckily, they hadn’t caught wind to any of the other vigilantes. The body pile up had grown quite large in their ally.

Just a couple more. Then I should be able to alert those carrying the cargo when they get here.

Without much warning, one of the men they had detained suddenly awoke and screamed.

The men out on the dock suddenly looked up, their faces painted with panic. It was clear that they knew someone else was lurking in the shadows.

“What was that?” one of them shouted, eyes darting around.

Shit. Vi thought to herself.

“There!” One of them screamed, pointing in the direction of Vi and the rest of the bodies, “Get them!”

Chapter 4: The Gift

Summary:

Caitlyn reflects on her close bond with Jayce, who always supported her dream of joining the Enforcers. As she contemplates the dangerous hextech stones he left behind, she's interrupted by Vi, leading to a playful and intimate exchange between them.

Notes:

hi!

thank you for reading chapter 4!

sorry for the delay in this chapter! if i am completely honest, i've never attempted smut before and this was my first time at it so it took me a lot longer to work out the logistics. also, i had to rewrite this chapter when i woke up in the middle of the night and realized there was a bunch of plot hole issue that i had to resolve. super unfortunate.

least to say, i hope you guys enjoy. this sort of lesbian sex scene is loosely inspired by my own experience. everyone sort of has their own take on smut and the level of passion and, in my case, i very much replicate vi. vi is only a stone top for this chapter but, the ending implies caitlyn reclaims her place on top...

also lowkey, i hope my hextech strap to baby isn't a completely cringe concept lmao. i had to really think about how i wanted to go about it whilst keeping it a mystery to thicken the plot so... don't come for me. + vi is very into the moment so when she grabs the strap on, she doesn't even see it. (oblivious and in love vi) i like to imagine cait keeps the strap on the side of her bed in her nightstand, just in case...

anyways! thanks for tuning in!

3 Months Prior

"...Hextech was meant to be a gift. Not a weapon. Not a threat. It can still be more than they think…”

Caitlyn often heard the remaining voice of Jayce trapped in her mind. It often felt like a calling or, a request.

Tonight was one of those nights where Caitlyn couldn’t help but miss her friend.

Her brother.

Jayce had always been in her corner. Even when no one else believed in her, when her parents dismissed her ambitions as nothing more than childish rebellion.

He was there.

She remembered the night she told him she was joining the Enforcers. How he had studied her for a long moment before breaking into a grin, clapping a hand on her shoulder like he had always known this was where she’d end up.

"About time," he had said. "Piltover could use someone who actually gives a damn in that uniform."

It had meant more to her than she could ever possibly say. He was the one person who never questioned why she wanted this. He understood in a way no one else did. It wasn’t just about rebellion or proving herself. It was about doing something that mattered.

Although Caitlyn’s parents had been great patrons to Jayce, his feelings for her were never influenced by that. As his responsibilities grew and hextech solidified its place as Piltover’s future, their paths naturally began to diverge. Yet, despite everything, he always made time for her.

It was one of Jayce’s necessary routines.

Even when he had the weight of the city on his back, he never stopped looking out for her.

She missed that.

She wondered where he could’ve gone. What the power of hextech truly held to cause him to vanish without a trace.

Could he still be out there?

Caitlyn pulled from her pockets the remainder of gems that he had given her. It was about 7, which hadn’t seemed like a lot in the grand scheme of all hextech but given the fact that there were only a handful left out there…

…It was undoubtedly a big deal.

The council hadn’t considered the extent of what still remained out there, especially with the hexgates that had been dismantled. All parties assumed that Piltover had exited the era of magic.

However, the first noticeable attack on Piltover since the war had ended had caught everyone off guard. It all started with a single gemstone, one that had washed up unexpectedly. It ended up activating old hex tech gear that was scrapped after the war ended.

The council made it top priority to collect all remaining parts of the gemstones and destroy them. Since the attack, most stones had already been collected. There unfortunately wasn’t any direct number to base this off of, since the rise of hextech kept demand high at the time and no one kept direct count of how many stones were out there.

However, the council assumed it was only a handful left which were in the hands of the Zaunite faction, since they had been the real culprits of the last few weeks. They figured each of the groups had joined together or bodies were lost in the process.

No one could say for certain.

Caitlyn knew the Council’s position was logical: the stones were a danger, a weapon waiting to be unleashed. But she wasn’t sure how she could part with them herself. She wasn’t sure if letting go meant relinquishing the last shred of control she had over the future. Those stones, even if dangerous, had a certain power that Caitlyn couldn’t ignore. The Council would never understand her attachment.

Her mind wondered to losing her mom. How much that changed her as a person. How she never felt safe alone since.

She wondered to the extremities and manipulation towards her from that time period from figures like Ambessa, or even Maddie…

She wasn’t sure how she could truthfully protect those she loved.

Suddenly, without much warning, she could hear Vi approaching her. Quickly, she shoved the stones back into their box and placed them in her coat pocket.

The door creaked open, and Caitlyn forced a smile.

“Hey, Cupcake. Whatcha working on?” She asked, leaning over to place a kiss on Caitlyn’s head.

“Oh- I’m…” Caitlyn said, trying to avoid looking awkward at her desk, “Just brushing up on some old hextech matters.”

That wasn’t a total lie.

“What’s got you looking into that?” Vi asked, unimpressed, wrapping her arms around Caitlyn’s shoulders.

"I have a feeling it might prove useful at some point in my professional career."

Vi kissed her head again with a smirk.

“Okay- whatever miss fancy councilor cupcake says.”

“You’re just jealous.”

“Jealous of sitting in meetings all day? No thank you.”

“Well, sometimes it’s not all about the meetings. You might be surprised at how much power you can wield with the right connections, love.”

"Oh? And you think those 'connections' could come in handy?"

Vi said, grabbing Caitlyn’s hand, slowly pulling her from her chair.

“Could be... but it all depends on how well you understand them, doesn’t it? I could teach you… if you’re up for it.”

"Careful, Cupcake. I might just take you up on that offer."

"You might just regret it," Caitlyn whispered back, her voice low but confident.

Slowly, Caitlyn leaned in, pulling in Vi by her hips. Vi was taken aback by the remark but leaned into it, pressing herself against Caitlyn’s frame, kissing her.

“Is this what you wanted?” Vi’s voice was a little rough.

Caitlyn’s eyes darkened.

“You have no idea what I want.”

The kiss deepened, the urgency building as Caitlyn’s hands slid up to cradle Vi’s neck, her thumb brushing the delicate skin there. She felt Vi’s pulse, fast and steady, against her fingertips.

“I could, do you right here. Right now.” Vi said out of breath.

“As tempting as that sounds,” Caitlyn said giggling, ”I could go for quite a while… if you know what I mean.”

Vi was now fully flustered at the remark, picking up Caitlyn bridal shower and rushing to their room.

“Well, let’s not waste any more time, shall we?”

Caitlyn could only laugh and lean into Vi.

Oh Vi, you beautiful human.

Vi set her down on their bed, with Caitlyn crawling back to sit against their pillows. Vi joined her, and they sat together for a moment before Caitlyn pulled Vi in, causing Vi to fall on top.

Vi, ready more than ever, worked her magic, moving her hands to feel out Caitlyn’s frame beneath her.

Vi was rather quick to take off her own shirt, revealing her muscular frame underneath. Just an instinct, in the moment decision.

No matter how many times Caitlyn had seen her partner naked, every time it seemed to hit her like a drug.

“Something wrong?” Vi said nervously.

“No, no!” Caitlyn quickly replied, her fingers finding their way to Vi’s chest. “I just… I can’t quite believe you’re real sometimes. I can’t believe you’re actually here… and that you love me the way you do.”

Vi moved closer , taking her head into her hands and kissing her hard.

Vi pulled back slightly, her lips brushing Caitlyn’s as she whispered, “You’re everything to me.”

They continued to kiss, with Vi leaning in closer to her.

“I can’t be the only one-” Vi said softly, in love, “...with my top off.”

Slowly, Vi took off Caitlyn’s jacket, gently tossing it to the floor.

For a swift moment, Caitlyn remembered how they held the stones.

Shit.

But without warning, Caitlyn’s turtleneck was off too, and she had completely let the thought of the stones exit her mind as she was exposed fully.

The once-secure box had popped open, and the stones had spilled out onto the bedroom floor. They lay there, a few of them still faintly sparking, their unnatural glow pulsing erratically in the dim light.

Caitlyn’s eyes were locked onto Vi’s, her heart beating faster and faster with each second that passed. Vi’s breath quickened, matching Caitlyn’s, and she deepened their kiss once again.

Vi quickly dove in and closed her lips around Caitlyn’s nipples. She gently sucked, letting her tongue take control of the peak. A broken sigh slipped out of Caitlyn as she tugged on Vi’s hair.

Vi’s lips continued to linger along Caitlyn’s chest, sucking at the other peak of her breast before slowly trailing down her stomach.

Caitlyn felt her entire body heat up.

“Is this…” Vi said, hovering over her, “Okay to take these off?”

Vi was at the edge of her stomach, touching her pants.

“Yes.” Caitlyn said quickly in a pleading voice.

Vi held her gaze, searching for any hesitation before carefully sliding her hands down, slowly easing Caitlyn’s trousers off. Her fingers traced lightly over her hips as she went, deliberate and reverent.

When her underwear fell away, Caitlyn let out a soft, unbidden gasp, her breath hitching at the sensation. Vi paused for just a second before pressing a lingering kiss to Caitlyn’s collarbone.

Vi was hungry.

She began kissing down Caitlyn’s chest, trailing to down her stomach. Caitlyn’s body began to tremble the closer that Vi got. Gently, Vi began to spread Caitlyn’s legs open, teasing her with gentle kisses on the inside of her thighs.

Caitlyn’s heart was pounding so loud she thought Vi might be able to hear it.

She thought she might explode if it took any longer.

Vi then began to circle Caitlyn’s clit with her tongue.

Caitlyn's hips bucked, seeking more contact, more friction. Vi obliged, sucking the swollen nub between her lips and flicking it with the tip of her tongue.

Vi suddenly got off, wiping off her mouth.

“Hey- what are you-” Caitlyn said in a needy tone. Vi walked over to one of their dressers, pulling out a rather alarming piece of tech Jayce also left behind for Caitlyn.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

A few years prior…

“I will absolutely not be taking this! What on earth would possess someone to invent such a thing?” Caitlyn exclaimed.

Jayce, of course, couldn’t contain himself. A laugh burst from his chest. He bent over, nearly losing it.

“Look, all I’m saying is…” He smirked, shoving it into her hands, “We all have those urges sometimes, and this? Quick fix.”

Caitlyn gawked at the device, then back at him, utterly horrified.

“This… this is what you’ve been using your talents for? Is this really the level of innovation you had in mind from the start? All those years I spent hanging around you, thinking you were some great inventor- ”

“Oh my gosh, Caitlyn,” Jayce wheezed, barely able to breathe through his laughter, “I can take it back if you want-”

“Wait- ” she blurted as she pulled it away just as he reached for it.

He raised a brow, grinning.

“Oh? Now you want it?”

“Um…”

He continued to hold a smirk.

“Consider it a deal, then. Caitlyn Kiramman, the proud first owner of the revolutionary Hexstrap- ”

“Oh, shut up!” she shrieked, her laughter bubbling out despite herself, her cheeks flushed deep red, “I am going to walk away now, and you are never speaking of this again.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“Aha! I knew this thing was real. I finally had the courage to whip this baby out.” Vi said, grinning as she held the hexstrap.

Caitlyn nearly choked.

“I beg your pardon?”

Vi smirked at her unassuming.

“Relax, Cupcake, I’m just teasing ya.”

“Don’t you dare take me out of the moment!” Caitlyn huffed with a grin.

“Yeah, yeah… just a joke.”

Vi held her hands up in surrender.

Caitlyn let out a flustered sigh, covering her face with one hand.

“I- who told you about that…” Caitlyn asked nervous.

“Oh, I have my ways of knowing…”

Caitlyn was about to die of pure embarrassment. Not only did she lie there naked, but she was witnessing her partner hold the most private piece of gear she owned.

“Honestly, why are you even bothering with that? It doesn’t work anymore.”

Vi raised a brow.

“You need the gemstone…” Caitlyn murmured, cheeks still red.

“Oh, you’re kidding- this was a Jayce ordeal?”

Caitlyn screamed into the pillow next to her.

“Gotta love that guy am I right?”

“Vi-“ Caitlyn frowned, growing sexually frustrated.

Without hesitation, Vi began to take off her pants and put the strap on over her underwear.

“Vi- ”

“What?”

“What on earth are you doing?” Caitlyn asked, feeling like she might just combust on the spot.

Vi looked back at her with low eyes.

“Hopefully…” she murmured with mischief on her tongue, “you.”

Caitlyn opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Vi barely gave her a second to recover before she was back on the bed. She wasted no time in pressing their lips together. Vi stayed hungry for her. Caitlyn felt her entire body respond, craving it. She couldn’t lie there naked waiting much longer.

“Then…” Caitlyn whispered against her lips, her breath uneven, “Show me. Prove you don’t need the gemstone to make it work it’s magic.”

Vi smirked against her skin, teasing her entrance. “Oh, Cupcake… you’re gonna feel this one.”

Caitlyn looked at her stunned, ready. She was dripping wet in anticipation.

Slowly but surely Vi began pushing it in, causing Caitlyn to grab on tightly to her back. She let out a soft moan.

“Are you okay?” Vi said, looking down at her anxiously, “I’ve honestly… never used one of these before…”

That comment caused Caitlyn to chuckle.

Caitlyn held her eyes shut, her breath unsteady.

“I just need you inside me. Right now. Please.”

Vi swallowed hard, pressing her forehead against Caitlyn’s as she pushed deeper, her breath ragged. Caitlyn’s fingers curled into Vi’s shoulders, pulling her closer, as if any distance between them was unbearable.

“Vi- ” Caitlyn gasped, voice tight, her hands gripping at Vi’s back.

“I’ve got you,” Vi murmured, her voice low, edged with something desperate. She kissed along Caitlyn’s jaw, her breath hot against flushed skin. Every movement was driven by something more than just need. It was raw.

Vi began to set the pace, thrusting in and out of her. A loud moan escaped Caitlyn’s moan, causing Vi to flush. Vi's hips snapped forward, driving the hexstrap deeper into Caitlyn's eager vagina.

Vi leaned down, capturing Caitlyn's lips in a strong kiss.

Suddenly, the hexstrap began to flicker in and out, as if struggling to activate. The energy surrounding them surged, bolts of lightning crackling through the air as Caitlyn drew closer and closer to the edge.

"You can go... a little faster..." Caitlyn said, huffing and puffing, feeling the stars in her palms.

Vi continued to meet Caitlyn's demands, her hips snapping forward with renewed vigor. The flickering hexstrap sparked and crackled with magical energy, sending jolts of pleasure through Caitlyn's core with each thrust.

Vi felt Caitlyn's body tense beneath her, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

With a final, powerful thrust, Vi sent Caitlyn crashing into her orgasm. Caitlyn's back arched off the bed. Only a loud cry tearing from her throat as her inner muscles clamped down around the hexstrap was heard.

As Caitlyn's breathing slowly returned to normal, the world around her came back into focus. The intensity of her orgasm left her dizzy. But so warm. So free. So wrapped up in the closeness of Vi.

Vi, ever so gentle, rolled to Caitlyn's side and pulled her close, cupping her face in her hand.

"Are you alright?" Vi asked, her voice tender. She let her thumb lightly brush Caitlyn's cheek. She loved when Vi would do so.

Caitlyn smiled, a soft laugh escaping her lips as she leaned into Vi's gentle embrace. "I’m more than alright," she replied, her voice still breathless but filled with affection. "Never thought I could love you more than I already did… and then you go and prove me wrong."

Vi grinned, brushing a stray lock of hair from Caitlyn’s face.

"You’ve got me wrapped round your little finger, you know that?"

Caitlyn's heart melted at the warmth in Vi’s gaze, and she snuggled closer, resting her head against Vi’s chest.

"Good," she murmured, "Because you're stuck with me now."

Vi chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to the top of Caitlyn's head.

"You know I'm more than happy to be stuck with you. Besides," she added, teasing, "I think you owe me for that performance."

Caitlyn lifted her head, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Oh, really? I reckon I can manage to repay you," she said, her smile playful.

Vi raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely intrigued. "I’m listening."

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

A few hours later…

Caitlyn suddenly awoke, heart racing as her body was drenched in sweat. Vi’s warm body was curled beside her, naked and bundled, still sound asleep, her breath soft and steady. Caitlyn offered a soft smile, and she traced Vi’s shoulder.

However, something caught her attention as she tried to settle down once more. A cold chill skittered up her spine as her eyes grasped the floor.

The stones.

She looked over the bed to see them all scattered on the ground in their clothes. She quickly sat up, panic flooding her as she scrambled to grab them. Quickly, she shoved them in the case and put them back in her nightstand.

I’ll deal with this first thing. Before Vi wakes up…

But as her fingers brushed the cold surface of the stones, a sharp, faint flicker of light sparked from within them. It was subtle at first, like a small current of electricity crackling beneath her skin, but it made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

Her hand hovered over the drawer, but before she could pull it shut, another soft flicker- this time brighter. More intense. It sent a shiver down her spine. Caitlyn’s chest tightened with dread.

What were they doing?

She was too tired to stay in tuned and could feel Vi wrestling in her sleep.

Shoot.

Quickly, she made her way back to bed, pulling Vi back into her embrace which  settled her.

It’ll be fine.

Right?

Tomorrow. I’ll figure it out then.

Tomorrow.

Chapter 5: Oh, Baby

Summary:

Caitlyn learns she’s pregnant, a revelation that fills her with both wonder and uncertainty, but before she can process it, a late-night knock brings devastating news- Vi is in danger.

Notes:

hi!

welcome back for chapter 5!

this was such a fun and cute chapter to write! i wanted to primarily focus on cait's POV this chapter and i am super happy with how it turned out!

i have midterms this week for college, so in the process of writing this i have been vigorously studying for my business law exam. pain. what's the saying... born to be an ao3 writer, forced to work a job and get an education. luckily i don't work too much, and after tommorows exams, i will have time to cook on chapter 6.

can i be honest: i am like, fully writing this as i go- i know i know... lack of planning is bad. i have rough sketches but, the ideas that flow are sooooo good and so, it takes me a bit longer to adjust accordingly. i hope this doesn't pain you, as my audience.

anyhows... hope you enjoy!

“I’d like to go over your results with you,” the doctor said gently as she walked through the door.

Caitlyn sat nervously on the exam table with her hands clenched in her lap.

Here we go…

She couldn’t stop thinking of Vi. She missed her wife. She wished she was there. She wanted to grasp her hand and hold her tight. The way she always did when she was scared.

At least there was some reassurance in the meantime. The test results had taken longer than expected, giving Caitlyn enough time to receive an update from the council…

…Vi had secured a promising lead.

Although she wasn’t able to know every detail due to the necessity of keeping the mission under wraps, Caitlyn knew they had traced a valuable source and were in the process of approaching and detaining those involved with the attacks.

I wonder when you’ll be home, Caitlyn thought as her hands wrapped around her arms.

Vi had been on plenty of missions before but never to the extent like this. The stakes had grown and Caitlyn knew the dangers were so much more intense. There was an unease that Caitlyn couldn’t shake. She couldn’t determine if it was because of the lack of Vi or the worry of her not making it home safe.

Still, if anyone could handle this sort of thing, it was Vi.

Caitlyn had seen it firsthand. Vi had an instinct for survival, for strategy, and she trusted her with her life.

But she still hated not knowing when she’d be back…

“Would you like the good news or the bad news?” the doctor asked.

Caitlyn glanced up at her. The look of shock painted across her face, unknowing what to say.

“Um… bad news, I suppose,” Caitlyn said, trying to steady her voice.

The doctor smiled slightly, putting Caitlyn at ease.

“Alright. The bad news is... there’s nothing wrong with you.”

Caitlyn blinked in surprise, confused at first.

“Oh…? Er, and the good news…?” Caitlyn said awkwardly concerned.

The doctor took a deep breath, then gave Caitlyn a soft look.

“The good news is... you appear to be pregnant, Caitlyn.”

Huh?

The words hit Caitlyn like a physical blow. Her chest tightened and the walls seemed to shrink around her. She froze up, unknowing what to say.

Pregnant? What-?

She told herself as she looked down at her stomach.

She shook her head before looking back at the doctor.

"What? No, that can't be right… surely not," Caitlyn’s voice wavered.

The doctor nodded at her.

“The test results are very definitive, Caitlyn. You’re about three months along, I’d say. However, I’d like to discuss the timeline with you.”

Three months.

What happened three months ago?

It was hard enough to even keep track of a week ago with all the chaos in her life.

Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat. She wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to stay upright.

Three months…

How could she have missed something like this? She hadn’t thought to check for something like this...

This wasn’t… possible.

Her hands trembled slightly as she pressed them against her stomach.

Is there really a baby in here?

Caitlyn swallowed, her throat dry. “Are you… absolutely certain?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, "Surely there’s been some sort of mistake?"

The doctor gave her a sympathetic look.

“I understand this is a lot to take in. But I triple-checked your results. You’re pregnant, Caitlyn.”

"I just... I need to see it for myself..."

The doctor regarded her carefully before nodding.

“We can arrange that. How much time do you have today?”

Caitlyn hesitated, her mind still reeling. She had duties to tend to... especially with Vi’s mission, but none of it seemed to matter now.

Not in the face of this.

“As long as necessary,” she murmured, her voice quieter than usual.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Vi was now running, her boots pounding against the shattered pavement as gunfire cracked through the air. Her muscles burned, but she pushed forward without hesitation.

“There!” one of the faction members shouted, yanking Vi backwards. Vi’s body hit the ground hard, but she had no room to wait for the pain to set in.

Around her, absolute chaos had ensued. Gunfire had rattled through the air, with smoke lingering quickly behind it. The enforcers that had been on the mission with Vi were struggling to upkeep with bodies of the faction members. There had far more than they could account for.

Vi dove her elbow into the ribs of the man who had grabbed her. He grunted at her hit, stumbling back just enough for her to shove him off completely. Inhaling sharping, she pushed herself upright just in time to block another attack at her. A metal pipe swung toward her head. She luckily ducked, narrowly avoiding the blow, then drove her fist into the attacker’s gut.

The faction member doubled over with a gasp. Vi took full advantage of this. She picked him up by the shirt, and then, with the aid of the momentum, thrust him into a crate next to him. The wood gave away, and the crate broke, with splinters and pieces flying all over the place.

“You think- backup is coming?” she barked out, wiping blood from her nose with the back of her hand.

The enforcer stood stunned.

Without much warning, a sharp bullet sound rung out.

“Look out!” One of the enforcers exclaimed as a bright blue flash blew through the bunch, injuring those beside Vi.

The bullet grazed the top of Vi’s head, tearing through her hair before whizzing past her ear.

Fuck, that was close.

But then- another shot rang out.

A shot she wasn’t prepared for.

The bullet slammed into her lower left leg. The pain exploded through her body. Vi fell over limp, with her vision blurring fast. She gritted her teeth, trying her best to stay up right.

Fuck.

The surrounding enforcers were barely holding it together. Most had been taken out, injured severely, or captured by the opposing faction. The ground became stained with red.

Vi knew that they were losing. And losing fast. She didn’t know what else to do.

It can’t end like this, Vi thought as she tried to walk.

But then, through the haze, a voice cut through loudly.

"Vi!"

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“Thank you for waiting so patiently. Now, this is going to feel a little cold, alright?”

Caitlyn barely registered the doctor’s words before the cool gel touched her skin, sending a small shiver up her spine.

She couldn’t help but feel a heavy guilt settle in her chest.

Is this real life?

Is this really happening right now?

Was she about to see their… baby…?

The room felt unbearably quiet except for the hum of the sonogram machine. Caitlyn forced herself to focus on the screen.

After a few moments of the doctor moving the probe around, Caitlyn’s eyes lit up at a small figure.

“There,” the doctor murmured, angling the wand slightly, “There is your baby.”

Caitlyn’s breath hitched.

On the screen was a tiny form, barely distinguishable, but unmistakably alive.

Caitlyn started forming tears in her eyes.

She was overjoyed.

“Oh…” she breathed, barely more than a whisper, “Oh…”

She let out a shaky laugh, overwhelmed, blinking rapidly as more tears welled up.

“That’s really them?” Caitlyn asked while she covered her mouth.

The doctor nodded, a kind smile on her face.

“That’s really them. A strong heartbeat, steady development- they’re doing just fine.”

Caitlyn swallowed hard, her throat tight.

“Bloody hell,” she muttered, her hands shaking as her hands hovered above her stomach.

We really are having a baby.

Caitlyn couldn’t keep her eyes off the machine.

“Would you like to hear their heartbeat?”

Caitlyn's eyes widened even further.

"Yes," she said without hesitation.

The sound of the heartbeat quickly filled the room. Caitlyn didn’t think she had ever heard any sound that was more beautiful.

“Oh… my- ” Caitlyn whispered, her voice trembling as tears welled up in her eyes. She smiled so wide. The nervousness, the fear… all of it faded into the background as she listened to the steady rhythm of her baby.

The doctor smiled warmly at her before asking, “Would you like a photocopy of the sonogram, Caitlyn?”

Caitlyn nodded vigorously, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand.

“Yes, please. I- ” she said, her voice still thick, She could barely find the words to explain how much it all meant, “I’m... I’m going to have a baby...”

The doctor handed Caitlyn the sonogram, sliding the picture into a protective sleeve. As Caitlyn took it into her hands, she cradled it like her baby was already in her arms.

“Thank you,” Caitlyn muttered, “I… I can’t believe it.”

The doctor gave a reassuring nod, before cleaning up the room and walking Caitlyn out.

"God," she whispered to herself as she traveled home, "This is actually real. We’re really doing this."

There had always been a part of Caitlyn that yearned for something beyond the rigid expectations of her life. She had always been told that duty was paramount, that her place was in the world of politics, of order, of law. But in the quiet moments, she had often found herself imagining a different path…

Being a wife, maybe even a mother…

She could already picture holding her baby in her arms, watching them grow, teaching them how to navigate the world she had fought so hard to change.

She had fallen in love with Vi for a thousand different reasons…

Her loyalty.

Her strength.

Her passion…

…but most of all: because Vi loved her without any type of reservation.

Caitlyn knew that same love would be poured into their child. Vi had a way of making people feel safe, of making them feel like they could face anything with her by their side. She would be the kind of mother who would put everything she had into raising their child with love, compassion, and fierce protection.

Caitlyn smiled softly, her hand resting over her stomach as she stood in the doorway of their home. By the time Caitlyn walked inside, night had fallen.

She made her way to their bedroom, still in awe, before her gaze flickered to the dresser.

The stones.

Caitlyn hurried over, yanking open the drawer to reveal the box. In all the chaos with the Council, she had nearly forgotten she left them there. The gemstones pulsed beneath her fingertips as she picked them up. Almost as if they were… alive.

Could this really have been the stone's doing?

She exhaled slowly, her mind racing with questions she couldn’t yet answer. She gently placed the sonogram inside the drawer alongside them.

Just another thing waiting for me to uncover… isn’t that right, little one?

A soft chuckle escaped her. She pressed a hand gently to her stomach, grounding herself in the reality of it all.

“I promise… we’ll figure this out,” Caitlyn murmured, rubbing slow circles over her abdomen.

But before she could dwell on it any longer, a sudden, sharp knock echoed through the house.

That was strange. At this time of night?

Caitlyn slowly approached the door, her riffle close by.

It isn’t just me anymore. Caitlyn told herself.

She cracked the door open just enough to see who was there.

“Mel?” Caitlyn’s voice was laced with unease.

Mel’s expression was grave.

“There’s been an attack.”

Caitlyn’s heart dropped.

Vi.

She barely heard the blood rushing in her ears as she threw the door open wider.

“Where?”

“Down by the dockyard. The cargo, taken to the island south of piltover for dismantlement. They’ve got them there.”

Her mind raced ahead of her body, already picturing the worst. Blood. Gunfire. Vi caught in the crossfire... She forced herself to swallow the rising panic and focus.

“How many of ours?” Caitlyn asked sharply, already pulling on her coat. She quickly slung her rifle over her shoulder.

“At least four confirmed down. Several missing. Vi’s squad was ambushed. We think she’s still alive, but…”

Caitlyn didn’t need to hear the rest.

“Take me there. Now.”

Chapter Text

Mel and Caitlyn arrived at the docks, bringing enforcer backup. The air was thick with smoke and the scent of gunpowder remained heavy. The docks, usually a place of routine shipments now resembled a battlefield.

Caitlyn tightened her grip on her rifle, eyes sharp as they scanned the grounds. She knew this couldn’t be good. All signs pointed to it.

“Stay alert,” she murmured to the enforcers, but even she wasn’t entirely sure what they were up against. She knew the power of the stones, she didn’t know to what extent they knew of how to use hextech.

The enforcers fanned out with their weapons raised, awaiting Caitlyn to signal them out.

Oh no.

Around Caitlyn, absolute chaos had ensued. She swallowed hard as her eyes darted across the wreckage. She recognized too many of the faces that now lied to rest. Enforcers. Allies. People Vi had fought beside.

I have to find her.

Caitlyn felt herself take a sudden step out before catching herself. She wasn’t just looking out for herself anymore.

She tightened her grip on her rifle, forcing her breath to steady.

Our baby will know their mom.

“On my count, we charge in- ”

“Caitlyn-” Mel cut in, holding her shoulder.

“Mel,” Caitlyn cut in, “I know you can cover me. I’ve had more than enough combat training. I can do this. I trust you.”

Mel hesitated, scanning her face.

“Are you certain?”

Caitlyn gave a firm nod.

She turned to the enforcers that stood behind her.

“Recover our people, secure the area. Sweep the streets for any hextech and, if possible, detain the bastards responsible…”

A chill ran through the ranks, but no one questioned her. They knew the Councilor had meant everything she said.

She took a breath.

It’ll be alright. Everyone is going to be fine.

"One…"

Just make sure you cover your-

"Two…"

A flash of searing blue light tore through the night.

A gunshot rang out.

Caitlyn’s stomach suddenly twisted.

That was hextech…

Which meant… a gemstone was here.

She held up her rifle, attempting to position a shot. Caitlyn’s shot rang true, striking the assailant clean in the shoulder, causing him to fall flat. They staggered back with a snarl, but she had no time to celebrate. More figures emerged from the shadows. She barely had time to register them before they lunged.

Her training truly then kicked in.

Caitlyn twisted as she dropped low, firing another shot into the nearest attacker’s knee. They crumpled with a pained howl. However, another was already coming close in. She swung the butt of her rifle up, catching them hard across the jaw which sent them reeling.

Gotcha.

Then, another fierce blue shot rang across the battlefield. It happened so fast.

Her blood turned to ice when she heard a raw scream tear through the crowd.

It was unmistakable.

Without hesitation, Caitlyn turned her eyes to see a figure slowly falling to the ground…

“Vi!” Caitlyn called out as she ran towards her.

Mel had slowly followed behind her, blocking off those who were close behind.

“Cait…” Vi croaked, her voice barely audible as she slumped back against the pavement. Blood was still dripping from her leg without stopping.

Caitlyn dropped to her knees without hesitation. She quickly pressed her hands to Vi’s wounds.

“I’ve got you,” she whispered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to stay calm.

Vi gritted her teeth, her breath coming in ragged gasps as Caitlyn tore off her own jacket, quickly binding it around the wound. The moment she tightened the fabric, Vi let out a guttural scream. Her body jerked violently beneath her hands.

“Gah!” Vi screamed out.

“Shh, I know, I know,” Caitlyn soothed with her own voice barely steady. The blood was seeping through too fast. She wasn’t sure if it would be enough.

Vi’s trembling hand weakly pushed at Caitlyn’s arm, trying to nudge her towards the battlegrounds.

“Please- Cait. Help the others. Leave me here. They need you-”

Caitlyn’s gaze snapped to her, eyes burning with emotion.

“I’m not leaving you here, Violet!”

Vi’s breath hitched. Caitlyn only ever used her full name when she meant something serious. When there was no room for argument.

But Vi still tried.

“Please… just listen-” Vi called out.

Caitlyn looked at her panicked,  “The gemstones…” she coughed as her hands wrapped around Caitlyn’s wrist, “The vehicle… transporting them… Don’t let them… get to it…”

Caitlyn barely had time to process her words before Vi’s grip slackened.

Shit. She’s lost a lot of blood.

I’ll be… fine…” Vi said before she had completely let lose knocking her head on the ground.

“No, no, no- Vi!” Caitlyn’s hands flew to Vi’s face.

But Vi had already gone limp.

“Vi!” She screamed out in agony.

Footsteps pounded against the wooden planks behind her…Mel just arriving a few seconds too late.

Mel stood frozen over her for a moment. She had no idea what to say in the moment.

“Mel-” Caitlyn’s voice cracked as she fought to hold back her tears, “The vehicle transporting the gems hasn’t arrived… can you tell them to retreat..?”

Mel turned sharply to face the dock. But as she took a step forward, her stomach sank. She gave Caitlyn the face of doubt.

It was too late.

Caitlyn quickly set Vi down before looking ahead herself.

There it was… the cargo.

Too many enforcers had gone down, their bodies scattered across the dock, leaving a clear path for the hijackers. The moment the transport rolled in, they struck. They rammed into the remaining Piltover forces, knocking them aside like mere obstacles.

How…?

Caitlyn’s breath hitched as she turned back to Vi, her heart hammering against her ribs. She couldn’t let them get away with the stones. Not after everything. But she couldn’t leave Vi here to die.

Not like this.

Would she be angry if she left to protect her? Would she understand?

A thousand thoughts raced through Caitlyn’s mind, but before she had time to make a choice, something…or someone- slammed into her from behind. The force sent her sprawling across the wooden planks. Her rifle clattering just slightly out of reach from her.

Caitlyn barely had time to react before rough hands grabbed her arms which yanked her up from the ground. Across from her a dazed Mel trying to remain conscious.

"Looks like the councilors are out of options," a voice sneered at Caitlyn’s ear, the barrel of a gun pressing against her temple.

Her breath hitched, but before the attacker could pull the trigger, a surge of golden energy erupted behind her.

Mel moved in an instant.

With a sharp flick of her wrist, a shimmering barrier exploded outward, sending the assailants flying back. Their bodies slammed against the crates and the dock’s wooden planks with sickening thuds. The force of the blast knocked Caitlyn off balance, and she stumbled, falling to one knee. Her hand instinctively flew to her stomach.

The baby.

Her pulse pounded in her ears. Around her, the chaos continued to ensue. More of the former hextech weapons continued to fire causing scream of Piltover folk to be heard now in the distance. The faction members were leaping out pulling out what she knew were the stones. Without warning, the vehicle had been let loose and crashed into a nearby building, causing a loud fire to burst.

Caitlyn knew there was no stopping them now.

Think of Vi… Think of our baby…

She gritted her teeth, swallowing down the panic clawing at her throat. She had made up her mind. There would be another chance.

There had to be.

She couldn’t believe how strong they were. How strong the gemstones had been… Now they had a whole extra lot of them…

Right now however… survival was the only thing that mattered.

"Mel!" she shouted, staggering to her feet. "Grab hold of anyone from our lot! We need to retreat now!"

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

The darkness wrapped around Vi quicker than she could have anticipated. The bloodshed on the docks, all the gunfire, shouting, all became so distant. So far away… The sharp sting in her leg dulled as if the world around her was slowly being erased, blurring until only a faint memory of chaos lingered….

And then… she smelled it…

The scent of freshly poured gin. Cigarettes that melted the room. The rough edges of her dad tending to his customers.

The scent of home.

She found herself blinking in disorientation as she walked on the cracked floor of the bar she called home.

She hesitated.

The Last Drop looked exactly how it did all those years ago. The worn chairs lined up around the tables, the counter that had seen countless drinks poured, the faded jukebox humming in the corner. Her mom always loved that thing. Everything was in its place. Just like it had been before everything went wrong.

Vi swallowed hard, taking a tentative step forward. The soft sound of her boots on the floor echoed through the empty bar. She should have felt comforted, but instead, a hollow emptiness started to creep in. She wasn’t sure why she was here.

“Vander?” she called softly. She didn’t expect an answer. However, that didn’t stop her from asking

A shadow moved across the room and there he was.

Vi’s heart stuttered. She blinked rapidly as if trying to make sense of what she was seeing.

“Vander?” she whispered again.

Vander’s towering figure stood before her. His broad shoulders hunched over the bar counter, his warm essence staring her down, causing her breath to hitch.

He hadn’t aged a day. Hadn’t changed at all.

“Dad?”

Vi’s chest tightened, her breath coming out shakier than she wanted.

“Is this real?”

Vander exhaled while shaking his head.

“That’s the wrong question, kid.”

“Then what’s the right one? Why am I- why are you-”

“Let’s have a drink, yeah?”

Vi hesitated, eyeing Vander warily. The last time she’d seen him, in his human form he was- consumed by shimmer, dying. Now, he was just like he had been before.

Vander studied her before handing her a glass.

“You still fightin’ like hell, then?”

Vi let out a dry laugh.

“Dunno if it’s been worth it.”

“Do you think that’s all there is, fighting?”

Vi frowned, fingers tightening around the glass.

“It’s the only thing that ever got me anywhere,” Vi said before downing her drink.

“That ain’t the truth, and you know it.”

“What is this all about?” Vi said as she slid the emptied glass back.

“It’s about you, kid. It’s always been about you.”

“I don’t understand you when you talk like that.”

Vander let out a low chuckle. He shook his head as he poured another drink before handing it to her.

“Yeah, well… not everything needs to be spelled out, does it?”

Vi clenched her jaw.

Why was he always like this…

“You always did talk in riddles when you didn’t wanna give me a straight answer.”

Vander slid the glass back toward her.

“Maybe. Or maybe you already know the answer, and you just don’t wanna face it.”

Vi’s fingers hovered over the rim of the glass.

“Face what?”

“I fear there is another storm coming.”

“I could’ve told you that, the remains of hextech have been nothing of a problem.

“It ain’t just you no more, Vi”

Vi stared at him confused.

“I know- Cait and, the rest of Piltover and Zaun. There is so much still to be done. I’m doing my best…”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“Then what do you mean. What are you trying to tell me? That is all I have left-”

Vi chocked on her words before she began to break down.

Those were who depended on her.

“It ain’t just you no more… remember that…” Vander said once again before the sequence started to swirl. The room seemed to shift around her. The walls of the bar warping and blurring. She tried to hold on, but it was no use.

“Vander- wait- I don’t understand.”

He looked up at her and smiled. The same smile she had always known.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Vi woke slowly. Her body ached. The lingering fragments of her dream still on her mind.

She blinked, trying to focus on the dimly lit room. It was quiet.

Beside her, wrapped in a thick blanket, was Caitlyn. Her face pressed against Vi’s side, holding her arm. Vi felt a pang in her chest.

How long had she been out?

She didn’t know. The last thing she remembered was the docks, the pain, the gunfire… and then…

“...It ain’t just you no more…”

What could that mean?

Since the passing of her dad and sister, she often had nightmares similar to this. But honestly, nothing like this had been.

At first, they were just flashes. Nothing more than small bits and pieces of what had happened. But as the days passed, the dreams became more vivid. More suffocating. They weren’t just memories anymore… they truly haunted her.

She’d wake up in the middle of the night, gasping for breath, her heart pounding in her chest as if she were still trapped at that moment, still watching them die.

Vi would scream and jerk in horror, but Caitlyn was always there.

Always…

Vi tried to sit up, the effort making her wince as a sharp sting shot through her leg. Her hand instinctively went to the injured spot.

That’s right.

Caitlyn stirred beside her. Her eyelids fluttered gently at the sound of Vi moving, She blinked a few times, disoriented at first. Then without hesitation shot up when she saw Vi trying to rise.

“Vi…” Caitlyn’s voice was hoarse. Before Vi could react, Caitlyn wrapped her arms around her in a tight embrace.

Vi froze for a moment, taken off guard by the force of Caitlyn’s relief. Caitlyn’s breath came in quick, uneven bursts, and her voice cracked as she spoke, “I thought I was going to… I thought I was going to lose you.”

Vi didn’t know what to say. She just held Caitlyn tighter, her arms wrapping around her back. She didn’t want to think about the near death she just had. She didn’t want to think about the weight of the world. She didn’t want to think of the mess they were in, or even that dream. All that mattered right now was Caitlyn’s warmth… the way she always felt like, home.

“Shh…” Vi whispered, pulling Caitlyn even closer, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m here, okay?”

“You’re sure? You…” Her voice faltered. Caitlyn’s tears seeped through Vi’s shirt.

“I’m sure,” Vi replied, smoothing out her hair.

Caitlyn’s breath hitched as she buried her face against Vi’s chest.

Caitlyn’s fingers gently traced Vi’s jawline.

“I won’t let you go alone again,” she whispered.

“Cait…” Vi started to protest, but Caitlyn stopped her. She shook her head.

“Vi—I…” Caitlyn paused.

Caitlyn stood up from their bed grasping her stomach under her hands. Her hands and body quickly turning from Vi.

"...There’s something I need to tell you…"

Before Vi could respond, a loud and urgent sounding knock echoed through the house.

“Stay put,” Caitlyn said.

Vi chuckled softly.

“Yes ma’am.”

Caitlyn quickly grabbed her rifle, her instincts kicking in as she approached the door. She opened it to find one of the Piltover enforcers standing there, breathless, eyes wide open.

“Oh! Oh- Councilor!” the enforcer stammered, “We’ve got some important intel from the raid. You are being requested immediately.”

“Is everything alright?” Vi asked, her voice hoarse as she watched Caitlyn reenter the room to change her outfit.

“Yes… the council needs to see me immediately. Something to do with the detained individuals from the attack at the docks,” Caitlyn said as she rushed around the room.

“Wait- Cait.”

Caitlyn stiffened at the sound of Vi’s voice. However, she didn’t turn around. Her fingers tightened on the doorknob, heart pounding in her chest.

“What did you need to tell me?” Vi asked, struggling to sit up.

Caitlyn’s stomach flipped. She could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on her. The words were right there, but she had to keep it together. She took a breath before turning her back to Vi.

“Um-” She faltered, before quickly pressing her hand to her stomach, “Oh, it’s nothing…”

Vi’s brow furrowed.

“Nothing?”

Caitlyn hurried into the bathroom. She wasn’t ready. Not anymore.

She wasn’t sure the degree of the seriousness of the meeting. She knew she couldn’t be late and with the secret she kept… she knew she’d definitely need a few business days with Vi once she knew of the baby.

“We can talk about it later,” Caitlyn said as she closed the door behind her, walking out in her Piltover uniform.

“Later?” Vi’s voice sharp, “What does that mean? Is it nothing, or something to talk about later?”

Caitlyn felt her pulse quicken.

This isn’t the right time to tell her.

She had to leave. She had to get out of there before she said too much.

“We’ll talk later,” Caitlyn said as she opened their door just enough to slip into the hallway, “I just… I need to handle this. I’ll be back.”

Vi didn’t let up. She slowly pushed herself up, limping toward Caitlyn. Vi held a concern look at her.

“What?” Vi said, “What about me, Cait? I know you had something on your mind.”

Caitlyn froze as Vi stood behind her. She quickly grabbed her shoulder, forcing her to stay.

“You need to rest, I swear it’s nothing.” she said, trying to stay calm.

Shit.

“How am I supposed to rest when it feels like you’re hiding something from me?”

Caitlyn flinched.

“I’m not hiding anything,” she snapped, more harshly than she intended. She gritten her teeth as she struggled to keep her composure, “Really, I just need to go.”

Vi took another step closer, turning Caitlyn to face her.

“No. I need you to stay,” she said, her voice deeper, “Please, Cait. I need to know what’s going on.”

The plea in Vi’s voice made Caitlyn’s chest tighten.

Not yet. She can’t find out like this.

“I’ll be back,” Caitlyn said strained, “Just… rest.”

But Vi wasn’t having it.

“Caitlyn-” Vi said, gripping her face.

“What?” Caitlyn snapped, “What do you want from me, Vi?”

Vi’s eyes softened, but were still laced with worry.

“You haven’t told me what even happened with the cargo,” she said quietly, “What was that about? You didn’t even say anything.”

Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat.

Fuck, that’s right.

“They- they got away with it,” she muttered quietly, “We couldn’t stop them…”

Vi’s expression faltered. “What do you mean you couldn’t stop them? Why didn’t you-”

“I can’t control everything, Vi!” Caitlyn shouted, raising her hands.

She stood there for a moment, breathless.

“I did the best I could for your sake and the ba- ”

Her words caught in her throat.

Caitlyn shut her eyes tightly.

“Shit,” she whispered under her breath.

“Cait?” Vi said, touching her shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” she said quickly, her voice trembling, “I have to go. I’ll be back soon. We’ll talk when I return, alright? Just- just rest.”

“Please-“ Vi said looking at her, her gaze searching, but Caitlyn couldn’t stand to meet it any longer.

With a quick step backward, Caitlyn left the room, leaving Vi behind.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“Thank you for meeting us here on such short notice,” one of the council members said.

“Of course,” Caitlyn said as she quickly took her seat.

“According to those detained during the raid, we now have confirmation that this attack was not simply the work of Zaunite extremists.”

Caitlyn’s grip on the armrest tightened.

“Go on.”

Councilor Salo exhaled.

“Some of the attackers were identified as former Noxian soldiers .”

Mel’s voice cut through the silence, low and unreadable, “Ambessa’s men.”

Caitlyn turned slightly, taking in the unreadable expression on Mel’s face.

“Those loyal to my mother wouldn’t have allied with Zaunites unless they had something to gain,” Mel continued, “Which means they don’t just want to survive. They want Piltover to fall.”

Sevika scoffed from her seat near the back, exhaling smoke from a half-burned cigar.

“Hextech was the only real threat against shimmer at the time. Now, with Piltover’s lack of hextech, it’s only a matter of time before they can outnumber us with just the tech alone.”

Caitlyn inhaled sharply.

Salo nodded.

“A full sweep of all Hextech-related machinery must be conducted immediately. Anything unaccounted for, anything compromised, must be secured or dismantled before they can use it against us,” said another council member.

“We’ll also need to delay any further shipments,” Caitlyn added, forcing her voice to remain even, “Of any stones we have left.”

“That was the last of them.” Mel added.

“What?” Caitlyn said, jerking her head, “Are we at their mercy?”

Sevika exhaled, flicking ash from her cigar.

“Course not. But we need to take action immediately. We need our strongest fighters ready to sweep the streets, but we need a plan. How is Vi recovering, Councilor Kiramman?” Sevika asked, causing the rest of the councilors to turn toward Caitlyn.

“She’s only just woken before I was requested here,” Caitlyn replied, her voice tight. She avoided making eye contact with anyone, trying to keep her composure.

“Did she give any testimony of information that might prove useful?” Sevika pressed.

“No, not yet,” Caitlyn answered, her tone clipped.

Salo sighed dramatically from the corner of the room.

“Unsurprising,” he muttered.

Caitlyn’s head snapped to his direction.

“Excuse me?” she said sharply.

Salo looked up, unbothered.

“It’s no surprise. You’ve been preoccupied with your politics, haven’t you? It’s only natural that Vi would be left to recover on her own.”

Caitlyn’s chest tightened. Her fists clenched under the table.

“And without Vi, this city would already be in ruins,” she retorted, “You may think politics are the crux of Piltover, but without people like her, we have nothing. Look at what is going on as we speak.”

“People like her?” Salo sneered. “She’s just a tool. We don’t need some fool throwing their life away for one battle. We need politics.”

Her hand brushed over her stomach once more.

Focus, she told herself, but, it was no use.

“You truly don’t have the faintest clue, do you?” Caitlyn shot back, “Vi is not just some pawn in a game. She’s the reason we’re still standing. She’s the one who’s put her life on the line for this city- and for you!”

Mel stepped in quickly, her voice soothing, but firm.

“Let’s all just remain calm,” she said, “We need to focus on the bigger picture here, not get sidetracked by personal matters.”

Caitlyn clenched her jaw, her eyes never leaving Salo.

“She’ll give us the intel we need,” Caitlyn said, her voice low and resolute. “Once she’s fully recovered, she’ll tell us everything we need to better prepare for this.”

“Perhaps,” Salo muttered dismissively, “But I wouldn’t hold your breath. You’re far too emotionally involved, Councilor. It’s clouding your judgment.”

Caitlyn’s hands trembled slightly.

“You think I’m emotionally involved?” she replied, “Of course, I am. Vi is my wife. I’m not just a politician to her, and she is not just some expendable asset to me.”

Salo’s gaze hardened at her words. Just as he was about to respond Mel swiftly intervened.

“Enough,” she said firmly, “We’re all doing our part. Let’s focus on the next steps. We’ll address this later.”

Caitlyn sank back into her chair.

Why are they still like this? After everything?

Mel’s voice softened, but her words carried the same authority.

"Councilor Kiramman."

Caitlyn straightened.

"Yes?"

"I think it would be best if you returned to Violet- ensured she’s recovering well. She’s going to be needed in this."

Caitlyn bristled.

"Mel- "

"She’s still one of our best, Caitlyn," Mel continued, "And if this situation is as severe as we believe, we can’t afford to have her out of commission for long."

She’s right…

Caitlyn pushed back her chair, standing swiftly.

"Then I’ll see to it that she’s ready."

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn came home to a quiet house.

“Vi?” She called out softly, her voice carrying up the stairs.

No response? That’s unlike her. Maybe she’s sleeping.

“Violet?” She repeated as she approached their room. When she pushed open the door, she found Vi curled up on the bed, shoulders tense, eyes shut tight.

“Hey,” Caitlyn said quietly, sitting down next to her, gently placing a hand on Vi’s back.

“Leave me alone, Cupcake,” Vi said, moving away from her hand.

Caitlyn flinched at the coldness in her tone.

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

Vi didn’t look back at her.

“Are you really going to act stupid like that around me?” Vi said harshly.

Caitlyn was taken aback, her chest tightening. She fought to keep her composure.

“What is going on with you?” Caitlyn said, trying to roll Vi over to face her.

Vi didn’t answer, just stared at the wall in silence.

“Just leave me alone, Caitlyn,” she muttered.

Caitlyn hesitated, biting her lip.

“Vi- ”

“I’m not going to ask you again!” Vi snapped, her voice breaking on the last word.

Caitlyn felt the sting of Vi’s anger, but she knew that something deeper was going on. Something Vi wasn’t saying. She tried to hold back her tears, but it was hard, so damn hard.

“I love you…” Caitlyn whispered, her voice trembling. She didn’t wait for a response, walking out of the room, unable to stay there any longer.

Vi’s voice stopped her before she could reach the door.

“Then what the hell is going on with you? And why suddenly can you not tell me?” Vi said, now sitting up, tears in her eyes.

Caitlyn shut her eyes, turning around, unsure what to say.

“I- I- I just… I don’t know-“

“See, this is what I’m talking about. Go deal with whatever Piltie matter you need to, but, I’m done trying.”

“What? But you’ve helped with the case so much- ”

“Yeah, but clearly not enough if my own wife won’t tell me what the hell is wrong- doesn’t really scream trust, does it?”

“You think I don’t trust you?” Caitlyn said wide-eyed.

“I feel it Cait,” Vi said, wiping the tears from her face.

Caitlyn looked at the dresser, with the stones and sonogram. She could feel herself drawn to it. She walked over and sat next to Vi. Her eyes remained on the dresser.

“It’s Ambessa’s troops.”

“What?”

"The ones we detained have ties to Noxus."

Vi blinked, eyes glassy, rimmed red. She shook her head, dragging a hand down her face.

“So that’s it? That’s all you’re giving me? You make this big deal and that’s it?”

Caitlyn swallowed, keeping her voice even.

“That’s what we know,” She hesitated, "They’re allying with those still loyal to Jinx and Silco. Their aim is to bring down Piltover."

Vi’s expression twisted. Her back straightened, her arms dropping to her sides as she met Caitlyn’s gaze.

“They’re working together?”

“Yes.”

Vi exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair.

“So it’s not just some scattered shitheads trying to stir up trouble. This is real.”

Caitlyn nodded.

“We need you.”

She meant it in every way possible. Not just for Piltover. Not just for the council. For them. For their family. For their unborn child.

Vi rubbed at her eyes before looking back at Caitlyn, something hesitant in her gaze.

“You sure that’s everything? Because before you said you need to tell me something…”

Caitlyn forced herself to hold Vi’s stare.

“Yes. It’s just the case. That’s all we know for the time being.”

The lie settled uneasily in her chest.

Vi watched her for a moment before looking down.

“Guess I don’t have much of a choice, huh?”

Caitlyn’s lips quirked into a small, tired smile. She gently lifted Vi’s chin.

“You always have a choice.”

Vi scoffed lightly. She reached out, her fingers brushing Caitlyn’s wrist, then curling around it, pulling her in. Caitlyn didn’t resist, letting herself be drawn into Vi’s arms, resting her forehead against her wife’s shoulder.

Caitlyn closed her eyes, breathing her in.

“I hate fighting with you,” Vi murmured against her hair.

Caitlyn’s chest ached.

“I know.”

A long pause.

“You’re all I got, Cait. I need you. You can talk to me.”

Caitlyn felt her throat tighten. All she wanted to do was to tell the love of her lifie that they were going to soon have a piece of them wondering the world. But she knew that could jeopardize the cause.

“You’re everything to me too,” Caitlyn whispered.

Vi pressed a lingering kiss to the side of Caitlyn’s head.

“Just… don’t shut me out, yeah?”

Caitlyn bit the inside of her cheek.

Am I doing the right thing?

But she nodded anyway. Even as the secret burned inside her.

Vi still looked at her like she knew there was more, but she didn’t push. Not tonight. Instead, she wrapped Caitlyn up in her arms and held her close.

And for the time being… that had to be enough...

Chapter 8: Wearing Your Clothes

Summary:

Vi and Caitlyn face mounting tension in Piltover, with the threat of the faction looming ever larger. As Caitlyn's pregnancy becomes harder to hide and emotions run high, Vi pushes for action, questioning the council’s hesitance, while Caitlyn struggles with balancing protocol and personal choices.

Notes:

hi!

thank you for tuning into chapter 8!

i apologize for the delay, i actually rewrote this chapter like... 3 times lol. so- actually this chapter was initially broken up into two ideas where the nightmare came before they talked about seeing ekko. however, i was in the gym and i was pondering the story and realized that it made sense in terms of the plot to combine it and switch the order. i really wanted to push caitlyn to a good state of vulnerability, and i think it will pay off with chapter 9. you'll see why soon...

treadmill thoughts am i right? they can do wonders for any of you overthinkers.

i actually had somewhat of a different version of this story in my head when it started but- the beauty about writing is you start to change alongside your writing and your ideas grow larger than you can imagine. i unfortunately write too much of this in my accounting class. sorry prof. your lectures just fuel my inspiration without failure.

anyways! hope you enjoy and see you in chapter 9! i have already started writing it, and truthfully, the wait will have been worth it :')

Three weeks had passed since the dock attack.

Vi had fully recovered and was now in the thick of meetings with the board, strategizing on their options in the face of dwindling hextech to patrol the streets.

Luckily, much of the remaining gear had been swept up, but still, the undercity remained oddly quiet. The threat from the faction loomed large, so large that the usual buzz of rumors and chatter in Piltover’s streets had quieted. There was no time for silliness with a storm like this brewing on the horizon.

But with every passing day, those in power in Piltover grew more anxious. The tension was palpable. No one could afford to wait any longer... something had to give.

Meanwhile, Caitlyn’s morning sickness had thankfully started to subside, which, for the first time in weeks, allowed Vi to breathe a little easier.

Vi had been very questioning as to whether or not Caitlyn sought treatment in which, she said it was just the anxiety of everything going on.

But as the sickness faded, Caitlyn was faced with an inevitable reality. Her clothes which were once comfortable started beginning to feel too tight.

She was now almost four months along, and her belly was beginning to show very prominently. She would get so nervous in meetings, she’d take a larger coat, often Vi’s, to hide it.

“Are you… wearing my clothes?” Vi said with a playful grin. She stood in the corner of the room watching as Caitlyn adjusted herself in their bed.

"Is that a problem? I'm simply getting ready for bed," Caitlyn snapped back jokingly.

Vi’s smirk faltered for just a second as she stepped closer.

“Would you like me to make it a problem?”

Vi strode toward the bed slowly. She hovered over Caitlyn, fingers brushing against the hem of her shirt before slipping beneath the fabric, lifting it ever so slightly.

Caitlyn’s breath hitched, her pulse quickening.

Fuck.

Her mind raced. She had to keep it under control. She had to keep the secret.

“Hey- wait,” Caitlyn blurted out, pulling back just enough to put space between them, “I…don’t, Vi. Please, not… now.”

Vi stopped looking at her, feeling guilty and confused.

“Uh” Her voice softened, genuine concern in her eyes, “I’m sorry. I- I didn’t mean to-”

Caitlyn could feel her pulse in her ears, the panic rising.

“I just-”  Caitlyn exhaled, the words caught in her throat, “It’s nothing. I’m just… on edge. It’s been a lot lately. With everything happening. I think I am just tired.”

Vi raised an eyebrow, studying her carefully.

“I’m fine. Just… need a minute.”

Vi’s expression hardened, but she didn’t push further, sensing Caitlyn’s walls had gone up.

“You sure? Are you feeling sick again?” she asked.

“No, I’m not.” Caitlyn snapped unintentionally, “I- I’m fine. Really.”

The defensive instinct took over. She could feel herself pulling back.

Vi hesitated, but finally, she took her place next to Caitlyn on their bed, making sure to not touch her.

“Alright. If you say so. I won’t press you on it.”

But Caitlyn could feel the shift. She knew how much Vi loved her. Every part of her concerned her in a way that was so sentimental. She had never doubted it since the day they had met. She just, couldn’t find the right words, the right time.

“I’m just… thinking about everything right now. It’s hard to um… get in the mood for… that,” Caitlynsaid, trying to force a grin.

“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” Vi said shifting her body to face her in the eyes, “Fuck, now I feel bad.”

They lay next to each other, looking at one another.

“No. It’s not you... I- want too it’s just… the Noxus troops have really hit hard. Everyone in the Undercity seems to be on edge. I’ve spoken to Ekko- ”

That wasn’t a complete lie.

“You spoke to Ekko?” Vi asked, propping her head up with her hand.

“I wanted to gain his perspective. Especially with the Firelight community. This situation is bigger than just Piltover now. I’m trying to make sure the council factors anyone who could be in harms way.”

“You think they’d find them out?” Vi’s voice hardened.

“Without a doubt. They’re pushing harder now, and Ekko confirmed it. The faction is calling for the complete annihilation of anyone who isn’t loyal to their cause.”

Vi clenched her fists.

“But why go this far? Why tear everything apart when they’re already so powerful? They’ve got those gems over our head now, and we know they have some pieces of hextech too. Isn’t that enough?”

“That’s the thing,” Caitlyn replied quietly, looking away, “Because for them, it’s never been about power. It’s about control… complete control.”

Vi raised an eyebrow as Caitlyn reached her hand out to touch Vi’s face. Vi gently took hold of her hand on her cheek.

“And you think Ekko would just sit there and let them take over?”

“He’s not the only one fighting. But Ekko’s terrified, Vi. They’ve already taken down two of his safehouses. They’ve made it perfectly clear with that message,”

Caitlyn sighed, pressing a hand to her forehead, “These aren’t just mindless soldiers anymore. They’re using proper Hextech gear, explosives, and executing targets in broad daylight. We were bloody lucky to have only lost a few on your mission. Ekko’s worried they might go after them directly soon, if we’re not careful about keeping their location under wraps.”

“Shit…” Vi said, “Do you think they’d come after us soon?”

“They’d come for anyone who threatens their plans,” Caitlyn replied.

“I just… I don’t get this…”

Caitlyn glanced at her pulling her closer.

"I think, for some, they never quite learn how to move on. They carry that pain, that hatred, and the only way they know how to cope is to lash out, to tear everything down around them. It’s a warped sense of revenge, isn’t it? They can’t heal, so they make everyone else bleed instead. It’s… well, it’s how I felt when I lost my mom and ran straight into Ambessa’s ranks. I was lost, and I didn’t give a damn who I had to hurt to get my idea of justice."

Vi’s eyes sunk at the memories associated with that time period.

“Still... after Silco’s bullshit, you’d think it would just level itself out. You’d think this war was finally over after… Jinx… died.”

Caitlyn stopped at the remark.

“That’s what we assumed. That it would all just stop. But peace doesn’t come easy, and it’s not always what people want. Some think violence is the only answer.”

Vi shifted, as though something Caitlyn had said hit too close to home. She looked away for a moment. Her mind raced with old thoughts.

“You think that’s the way it’ll always be? That no matter how much we try to fix things, it’s just gonna get worse inevitably? Some shithead is always going to come back for more trouble?”

"I reckon some will keep pushing until there’s nothing left," Caitlyn murmured, "But others... others won’t stop fighting, no matter what. And I think that’s why it’s crucial we send a message to those who think they can take us down… that Piltover won’t crumble to some bloody vigilante or madman. We’ll keep protecting everyone, and I mean everyone who’s innocent, no matter the cost."

Vi exhaled sharply as she removed her hands from Caitlyn to touch her forehead.

"Then we stop waiting around for the council to pull their thumbs out and actually do something. We should meet with Ekko on our own. If you tell him we think these attacks are getting closer to happening, he’ll want in. Little man could help us actually hit back before they strike again."

Caitlyn sighed before saying, "But I have to take this to the council- "

"Fuck the council."

"Vi- "

"No, Cupcake. You know they’re not gonna move fast enough. You’ll spend weeks in meetings, they’ll hum and haw, and in the end, what? A few more curfews? A nicely worded speech?" Vi scoffed, "That lot aren’t out here. They’re not the ones bleeding in the streets. I am. I’ve fought my whole damn life, with or without their permission. I don’t need their help to put an end to this."

"They did their best with the dock raid. You can’t completely write them off for that. We gave you our best… I gave you my best."

Vi looked at her softly, understanding.

“Yeah I know- but I’m tired of waiting for their approval to get anything done. I love you, but if they are already onto Ekko how much longer until they are onto us? I can’t- lose you.”

Caitlyn’s jaw tightened.

"You think you can stop this on your own?"

"I know I can if it comes down to it."

"You're being ridiculous," Caitlyn muttered, "Rushing in alone will only get you killed."

Vi smirked at her.

"Then come with me."

Caitlyn raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me," Vi tilted her head, voice low, "If you don’t trust me to handle it on my own, then back me up. But don’t tell me to wait for permission when we both know the council doesn’t work the same way you and I do. We can get this under wraps. Teaming up with Ekko is our best shot. We shouldn’t involve more innocent people if we don’t need to."

Caitlyn hesitated, her pulse quickening.

"I… I can’t just abandon protocol, Vi."

"You’re not abandoning anything, you’re making a choice." Vi’s fingers brushed Caitlyn’s wrist, "You don’t have to be part of their game, Cupcake. You’re better than that."

Caitlyn sighed, looking down, weighing everything in her head.

"Fine," she finally muttered with a grin, "You win. But if I get booted off, I'm absolutely blaming you. Something good has to come from this."

“Don’t worry Cupcake. We are Piltover’s finest aren’t we?”

“Oh shut up.”

“You know you love me.”

"Something like that," Caitlyn murmured, pressing a kiss to her jaw. "Now, let’s get some rest, okay? We’ll talk more in the morning. We’ll see to Ekko soon."

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn was standing in the smoke filled hallways of the council’s building in Piltover. Her lungs burned as she made her way through the building.

“Hello?” She called out. Her voice echoed with no response.

She pressed her hand to the wall, trying to steady herself.

“Where am I?” She asked herself softly.

The marble flooring, which was once pure, was now cracked and uneven, littered with debris. She felt her heart sink with every step. An eerie feeling creeped up her spine without warning.

Then, there was a loud crash.

Her heart stopped.

The air felt colder.

Much colder.

“Mom!” Caitlyn shouted, now running. Her legs were moving faster than any of her thoughts.

She pushed open a door. The scene before her was nothing like what she remembered, this wasn’t your typical council meeting.

The room was dark, only being lit by remains of loose wires that were now flickering in the background.

And then, her eyes caught something... a figure slumped against the shattered wall, blood staining the floor in front of her.

“Mom…” Caitlyn’s voice broke as she moved closer.

Her mother was there. Lifeless. Just as they had found her… that day…

Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat as she rushed to her side, hands trembling as they reached out to touch her. The coldness of her skin made her recoil. Caitlyn’s entire body was left shaking.

“Please… no, no…” Caitlyn’s voice broke apart as she leaned over her mother’s body, her hands hovering helplessly over her. Blood. So much blood. The blood of the people she’d worked with, the blood of the woman who had raised her.

Her fingers brushed through her mother’s hair, sticky with blood, but still so familiar, so like how she remembered. The contrast hit her like a punch to the gut. Her mother was still here in the way she felt, in the scent of her, but she was gone.

Her throat burned.

“Mom, please. You can’t leave me. Not like this.”

She grabbed her mother’s hand, her eyes wild as the surrounding darkness grew thicker.

The air was suffocating.

She shook her, as if somehow, that would make her wake up. But it was pointless.

She knew she was dead.

Tears blurred her vision, dripping down her cheeks, but she couldn’t look away.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do without you. I… I can’t- ”

The sound of footsteps. Caitlyn’s head snapped up.

Someone was coming, but it wasn’t her mother.

Her chest tightened, and she quickly wiped her eyes, looking frantically around the room, but the figure emerging from the smoke wasn’t her mother. It was Jinx, eyes wild, the wicked grin stretching across her face as she strolled through the wreckage like she owned it.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn woke with a gasp, bolting upright. Her breath came in ragged heaves. Her skin clammy with sweat.

The nightmares had been there for as long as Caitlyn could remember, but after her mom’s death, they’d become something different, something far worse.

The nightmares weren't just about the violence, the war, or the bloodshed- it was the feeling that lingered. That feeling of helplessness. Of knowing that no matter how hard she tried, how much she pushed herself, she would always be too late…

She had to fight to stay grounded, to remind herself where she was. To remind herself that it was over. But in her mind, it never was.

They’ve only gotten worse since the dock attack, and small suits that followed after.

And that’s what terrified her most. She couldn’t control it.

She hadn’t told Vi about the nightmares. Not in full. She couldn’t bring herself to admit just how deep they ran. Vi already carried enough of her own burden, the guilt and the memories of what had happened to her, to them both. Caitlyn didn’t want to add more weight to that.

She couldn’t.

Caitlyn could feel it every time she looked at her wife, every time their eyes met, every time Vi tried to smile but couldn't quite reach it. Vi blamed herself for Jinx’s actions often.

When Vi had found Caitlyn after the battle, it had taken days for her to finally tell Caitlyn everything that had happened with Jinx. She knew how much she loved her sister, and the guilt that came with that love. Caitlyn didn’t want to add to that guilt that consumed her.

But she missed her mom.

Cassandra Kiramman. She had always been an unshakeable force. A true woman of power, poise, and unwavering resolve.

She would know exactly what to do about all this. The Zaunite faction. The baby…

She often wondered what she might’ve thought of Vi beyond their brief interaction.

Caitlyn always tried to fill in the legacy left but felt like she would never measure up.

How could she?

She glanced over at her wife, who was gently resting her hand on her stomach.

It’s like she knows, huh?

Caitlyn offered a small, affectionate smile as her eyes lingered on Vi.

Mom would’ve loved you. It might’ve taken her a bit to adjust, but she would’ve loved every bit of you, just like Dad does… Just like I do…

With a quiet sigh, Caitlyn carefully slipped out of bed, wincing as the floor creaked beneath her. She did her best to not wake her wife. She just needed something to keep her mind from spiralling.

I just… need to talk to you… it’s been too long. There is so much on my mind. I don’t think I can go back to sleep.

Caitlyn grabbed her coat, alongside the sonogram from her dresser. She tucked it into the inside pocket, and without another word, she made her way out the door, heading towards her mother’s gravestone.

Chapter 9: Cassandra

Summary:

Caitlyn visits her mother’s grave, seeking comfort as she grapples with the weight of her fears- her pregnancy, the war, and the secret that she's been keeping from Vi.

Notes:

hi!

thank you for reading chapter 9!

apologies for the delay! my birthday is march 31st and i have vigorously been picking up extra work shifts in preparation for my 21st! unfortunately i also have a million assignments due this week i'm trying to get finished with so i can have some peace lol. so- my time to write is literally... in the depths of the night.

i am so excited and emotional over this chapter. i hope this really grounds caitlyns character in her humaness and the guilt she has been holding onto for a long time. both in relation to her secrets from vi but also with the death of her mom. i really wanted to push her character so that chapter 10, the build up will have felt worth it. it took me a bit to get it right, as i wanted to give more attention to her relationship with her mom. super happy with how it turned out. secrets will be shared finally!

i heavily listened to "not a lot, just forever," by adrianne lenker when i typed this up. definitely the vibe for the next few chapters.

hope you enjoy! see you in chapter 10! that's gonna be my favorite...

The garden on the outskirts of the Kiramman estate was often a place of escape. A younger Caitlyn stood quietly next to her mother, both of them overlooking the beauty that surrounded them.

“You know, darling,” Cassandra began, “...One day, all of this will be yours to carry. The legacy. The family.”

Caitlyn looked up at her mother. The familiarity of the weight of the family name pressing against her chest. Caitlyn often wondered if she was the right one to carry the legacy.

Cassandra smiled a knowing smile as she turned her eyes toward Caitlyn.

“I’ve always believed in you, Caitlyn. From the very moment I knew you were coming into this world- I could see it. The strength, the brilliance, the heart. You are everything I ever hoped for and more.”

Caitlyn felt her heart skip.

“You do?” Caitlyn asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Cassandra’s eyes softened, her hand finding Caitlyn’s, fingers curling gently around hers.

“Of course, darling. From the very beginning… And not just because you're my daughter... but because I know you. I see it in the drive you have to become the finest enforcer Piltover has ever seen. I wasn’t sure at first about it, but now? I understand it. I understand your heart.”

Caitlyn swallowed, feeling the lump in her throat grow.

“But what if… what if I’m not enough? What if I can’t live up to it? I mean- I don’t even feel like I am a Kiramman. I don’t deserve it… the estate… the name… the legacy… any of it.”

A soft chuckle escaped Cassandra.

“You already are enough. You don’t need to be anyone other than who you are. And if you ever doubt that, know that I’ll always be here to reassure you. I’ll always hold you up. I swear it.”

Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat. She squeezed her mother’s hand. She looked up at her with newfound trust.

“I don’t know how I could do it without you, mom.”

“You’ll never have to… I promise,” Cassandra whispered pulling Caitlyn closer until their heads were just a breath apart, “You don’t have to carry this alone. I’m here… I’ll always be here. I love you so much, Caitlyn… I’ll never forsake you.”

Caitlyn’s heart felt lighter than it had in a while. As she got closer to 18, the weight of life had begun to trample her. It was scary to think of all that came with maturing into the sole inheritor of such a big part of Piltover. However, for the first time, the weight of the legacy didn’t feel so crushing.

“I love you too… I’m so lucky to have you,” Caitlyn murmured.

Cassandra pressed a soft kiss to the top of her daughter’s head. She wrapped Caitlyn in a tight embrace.

“And I’m lucky to have you. You’re everything, Caitlyn. And one day… you’ll have a family of your own to love and protect, just like I did with you. But remember... you don’t have to rush. Take your time. You have all the time in the world to decide who you want to be. And no matter who that is, I’ll be there.”

Caitlyn pulled back just slightly to look her mom in the eyes.

“I think I already know who I want to be.”

Cassandra smiled.

“Good. Because you’ve always been her.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn slowly approached her mother’s grave. She was buried near the Kiramman estate, in the garden that her mother would often take a young Caitlyn to. The garden had once been a place of solace. She held so many memories cherished alongside her mother, now empty.

As she neared the grave, Caitlyn suddenly stopped. It had been a while since she came out to visit. She would often come with her dad, as he made it a weekly ritual. But for Caitlyn, with how much it still hurt her, it was maybe every few months.

"Hi, Mom," Caitlyn said softly as she knelt down, "I’m sorry… it’s been far too long, hasn’t it?"

She hesitated, holding her breath.

Come on, Cait… pull yourself together, she urged herself. She took her fingers a gripped the edge of her jacket.

"I don’t know if you have a moment to listen, but I… I could really do with you right now, Mom. More than ever."

Caitlyn took a second before continuing.

“There’s been… so much happening. I can’t- I can’t control it all. Our home is on the brink of collapse, and I-” she faltered, “If you were still here, maybe I wouldn’t have had to step into a role I was never ready for...”

Caitlyn stopped. She had never been able to admit that out loud.

“I wasn’t ready,” Caitlyn said with a shuddering breath, “I wasn’t ready for you to go.”

She closed her eyes.

“I need you. God, I need you so much.”

Tears blurred her vision, and she let them fall freely, her shoulders trembling as she leaned in closer.

This is harder than I thought

“I’m scared, Mom…There’s so much happening, and I feel like I- ”

“I should have asked you more questions while you were still here,” Caitlyn murmured, “I don’t know how to just be . I don’t know how to be a council member, a wife, a moth- ”

She choked on the word, her breath catching in her throat.

With careful movements, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the small sonogram. She placed it gently on the ground hoping her mom might be able to sense it.

“I… I’m pregnant,” she breathed, a trembling smile overcame her as she gazed at the sonogram.

“I’m going to have a baby. Vi and I’s baby. I…I don’t know how to do this. I don’t even bloody know how this came to be but… I don’t know how to be a mother. But that’s not what scares me,” she whispered, her fingers tracing the tiny image.

“It’s not because I don’t love them already, because God, I do… more than I can even comprehend…”

Caitlyn swallowed hard.

I love you so much, Caitlyn told herself as she picked up the sonogram and placed a gentle kiss on the photo, I’ll never forsake you.

“But I am terrified , because of where our nation stands, and I don’t know how to stop it from falling apart. I don’t know how to protect them from the world they will be born into. And I cannot bear the thought of this-” she gestured her hand slightly over her stomach, “-being taken from me before I even have the chance to hold them…”

A heavy silence settled around her as she clutched the sonogram close to her chest. Then she carefully tucked it back into her pocket.

“Mom… I wish you could have known… You’re going to be a grandmother…”

She swallowed against the lump in her throat, her fingers ghosting over the damp grass.

“I wonder… did you ever dream of being one?” Caitlyn asked softly.

“Did you ever imagine what it would be like? To hold your grandchild in your arms… to tell them stories, to spoil them in ways you never could with me?”

She sighed as the first drops of rain began to fall. But she made no move to leave.

She wasn’t ready.

“I haven’t told Vi,” Caitlyn admitted, “I don’t know how to…”

She lifted her shirt to reveal her small, four-month bump. Gently, she placed her hands on it and stared at it with admiration.

“She’s going to be the most wonderful mom… I just know it….I- I wish you could have truly met her. She loves me, so much. I know she is going to love our baby just as much, if not more. She makes me so incredibly happy mom, and I… I’ve lied to her…”

Her breath hitched.

“...About the baby. About the gemstones- ” She dragged a hand down her face, “God, I’m doing it all wrong, aren’t I?”

She swallowed hard, tilting her head up towards the grey sky as the drizzle turned heavier.

“You and Dad always seemed to know how to make it work,” she whispered, “You made it look effortless. I remember the way you’d laugh with him, the way you’d look at him, like he was your entire world. It’s how he knew… that I would ask Vi to marry me. Because he saw you in her…”

“...In the way she loves,” she whispered. “In the way she fights for the people she cares for. In the way she stays, even when everything is falling apart. She’s perfect.”

She shut her eyes, tears slipping freely down her face.

“I love her so much, Mom. More than I have ever been able to say. And yet, I am deceiving her… What should I do?”

Her fingers curled into fists.

“She should know, right? I feel like, that is something you’d tell me. She deserves to know. But I can’t stop feeling afraid,” Her breath shuddered.

“Afraid of what she’ll think. Afraid of what this means. Afraid that I will fail them both.”

Her shoulders trembled as she bowed her head.

“I don’t want to lose them, Mom. I cannot lose them. Not like how I’ve lost you…”

The rain started to pour harder as Caitlyn laid on the dirt, with her head in her hands. She didn’t know if she’d be able to stop crying.

“Cupcake?” A soft voice called out as thunder rolled in the background.

Caitlyn gently turned her tear soaked face to look at the figure.

Vi?

Vi didn’t ask any questions, she just knelt down and held her.

“You… shouldn’t be out here…” Caitlyn mustered out as she continued to sob.

Vi’s arms tightened around her, one hand stroking soothing circles against her back.

“I’m never going to leave you alone… Caitlyn.”

“How did you- know where to find me?”

“Sometimes you just… know.”

Something inside Caitlyn cracked.

She finally let go.

Caitlyn turned and fell into her arms.

With a broken sob, Caitlyn turned fully into Vi’s arms, burying her face in the warmth of her wife’s shoulder.

For a long while, neither of them spoke. The only sound was Caitlyn’s ragged breathing and the distant roar of thunder.

She let out a shaky breath, pulling back just enough to look at Vi, her fingers still fisting the fabric of her coat. Vi’s eyes searched hers.

“Vi…”

“Yeah?”

“I- ”

The words failed her. Caitlyn’s lips parted, but nothing came out. She felt as if the weight of her own guilt was pressing against her lungs, suffocating her.

How was she supposed to say this?

Vi reached up, gently brushing a rain-soaked strand of hair from Caitlyn’s cheek.

“Hey… talk to me.”

Caitlyn shuddered at the kindness in her voice. She didn’t deserve it. Not at all.

“I… I have lied to you.”

The confession tumbled from her lips before she could stop it.

Shit.

Vi stilled.

“What?”

Caitlyn pressed her shaking fingers against her temple.

“You were right. I haven’t been honest with you. And I…” She sucked in a sharp breath, “I don’t know how to be honest because I… I’m scared , Vi.”

Vi’s brows furrowed.

“Scared of what?”

“Of everything. Of losing you. Of ruining this. Of telling you the truth and watching the way you look at me change.”

Vi took a slow step forward, reaching for her, but Caitlyn flinched.

“Cait… what’s going on?”

“I’m sorry…” Caitlyn’s voice cracked, “...I know I can’t take it back, I know that, but I need you to…”

A crackle of lightning suddenly lit up the sky. The ground trembled beneath them as the thunder worsened. Caitlyn gasped as she clinged closer to Vi.

Vi’s hands were on her in an instant.

“Okay- okay, hold that thought,” she said quickly, steadying her, “Let’s get inside before this storm gets worse. Is that okay?”

Caitlyn blinked through the rain, her breath shaking as she turned back toward her mother’s grave.

You can do this, Caitlyn. I know you can, darling.

For a moment, she swore she heard it coming from her mom. Or maybe she only wished she had.

Vi didn’t push. She just watched her carefully.

Finally, Caitlyn nodded.

Without hesitation, Vi pulled off her jacket, wrapping it around Caitlyn’s shoulders. She tucked her close, guiding her back toward the Kiramman Estate.

She leaned into Vi’s warmth.

Every part of Vi… was a part of life Caitlyn didn’t deserve.

But she loved her. God, she loved her so much. No one could ever understand it.

Every part of her, Caitlyn could not lose…

And now… she had to tell her the truth…

There was no more hiding…

Chapter 10: Free Treasure

Summary:

Caitlyn finally tells Vi she’s pregnant, leaving Vi completely stunned before the reality sinks in—she’s going to be a mom.

Notes:

hi!

thank you for tuning into chapter 10!

this is arguably my favorite chapter to write and the longest one so far! my birthday was on the 31st and i finally turned 21! woohoo! so i will admit, while writing/editing this chapter, i did enjoy a cold beer (i'm a lesbian guys... leave me alone.)

long at last we've reached the reveal! yayayay! tbh when i first started writing this story i thought the reveal would come way later but, it's funny how stories somewhat evolve and ideas sorta hit you in unexpected ways. also the love that this story is getting on twitter is awesome, so thank you!

this title is also inspired by the song "free treasure" by adrianne lenker. when i first started thinking of this fic, that was the song i often turned to. it's so caitvi post-canon coded. i love them so much.

i will also be taking a trip to disneyland and to nashville in the next two weeks (insanely busy) so, there might be a delay in chapters but do not worry. i will definitely do some writing whilst on my travels, so do not fret! just a little warning. ;)

thank you for the support as always! see you in chapter 11!

Vi helped Caitlyn up to their bedroom keeping a steady arm around her waist. The storm outside continued to come down while everything inside continued in it’s stillness. Vi searched up and down Caitlyn’s exhausted face as she helped her to their room.

“Cait” Vi stopped when they entered the doorway.

She took Caitlyn’s face in her hands, “Are you alright?” Vi asked, voice softer than usual.

Caitlyn had been looking to the floor more of the way home. Her nerves were shot.

Caitlyn exhaled before responding gently, “Yes. I just didn’t think it would storm that bad.”

“You know, what I mean,” Vi silently said concerned.

Caitlyn gently placed her hands on Vi’s waist as she was still being held.

"If I’m being honest, no. I just..."

Caitlyn started to shut down.

“Hey- let’s get you changed out of that. You want another set of my clothes?” Vi teased, hoping to lighten the mood, “I know you secretly love wearing my stuff.”

Caitlyn rolled her eyes but didn’t deny it. Instead, she took the offered clothes with a soft and shaky smile.

“Thank you,” she whispered as she pressed a kiss to Vi’s cheek. She then quickly made her way to their bathroom.

Vi sat on the edge of the bed, bouncing her knee anxiously as Caitlyn changed. Her mind wouldn’t settle.

What on earth is she hiding?

She’s been lying to me?

The thought made her stomach twist. Vi wasn’t angry, she just felt… helpless.

Unable to sit still, she shot up and made her way to the kitchen.

Let’s just… get her some tea. Tea always soothes her. Right? It might help…

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

6 Months After The Battle of The Arcane…

Vi settled beside Caitlyn, their knees brushing as she gently nudged the warm porcelain cup into her hands. Caitlyn took it without looking. Her fingers continued to trembled slightly against the delicate china. She was quiet. However, Vi knew something was wrong.

“Hey, Cupcake,” Vi murmured, “I know how you’re feeling. Trust me, I do. I’m frustrated too. Watching Zaun and Piltover circle around each other like cats in a bloody alley…it’s upsetting. But I can’t-” She hesitated, tucking a stray strand of hair behind Caitlyn’s ear, “I can’t just sit here and watch it eat you alive.”

Caitlyn let out a shuddering breath as she gripped the cup harder.

“It just feels so- ” She stopped, swallowed hard, "Gods, Vi, it’s so exhausting. I’m doing everything I can, and it’s like... the way they talk about Zaunites, even knowing I’m in love with one."

Vi’s chest ached at the crack in her voice. She reached for Caitlyn’s free hand, brushing her thumb over her knuckles.

“I know.”

Caitlyn let out a hollow laugh.

“Do you? Do you know what it’s like to fight for something every single day, to put everything you have into it, and still feel like you’re standing in place?” She turned to face Vi fully now, "Six months, Vi. Six bloody months, and nothing's truly changed. They nod, they smile, they humour the idea of progress, but the moment backs are turned, it’s all just… just words.”

Vi squeezed her hand. “It’s not nothing, Cait.”

Caitlyn let out a breathless laugh as she pressed her palm against her head.

“It feels like nothing.”

Vi shifted closer, wrapping an arm around her waist. Caitlyn didn’t resist. She melted into Vi, placing her forehead against Vi’s shoulder.

“You are not standing in place,” Vi murmured into her hair, “You’re doing more than anyone else on that bloody council has ever done. You’re fighting like hell for a future no one else has the guts to fight for.” She tilted her head slightly to kiss Caitlyn’s temple.

“And you’re not doing it alone. You’ve got me. Always.”

Caitlyn let out a shaky breath against Vi’s collarbone.

“You make it sound so simple.”

Vi huffed a soft laugh.

“It’s not. It’s never gonna be. But I’d rather take the slow road with you than watch you burn yourself out trying to sprint to the finish line.”

Caitlyn pulled back slightly to meet Vi’s eyes.

“I don’t know what I’d do without you. I can’t even remember what my life was like before you,” she admitted.

Vi reached up to to wipe away the tear that had slipped free on Caitlyn’s face.

“Lucky for you, you’ll never have to find out, cause I’m always gonna be right here.”

For a brief moment, they just looked at each other. She pulled away just enough to take a sip of her tea.

“It’s a bit strong,” Caitlyn murmured as she smiled, “Too impatient with the leaves?”

Vi smirked.

“Always.”

Caitlyn sighed while she shook her head.

“You’re impossible.”

Vi leaned in to press her forehead lightly against Caitlyn’s.

“Yeah, but you love me for it.”

Caitlyn closed her eyes for a moment, breathing her in.

“I do,” she whispered, “More than you’ll ever know.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Vi carefully poured the steaming water into Caitlyn’s favorite porcelain cup. She wasn’t much of a tea drinker herself, but Caitlyn swore by it. It always seemed to help her.

This should hopefully calm her down… maybe help her open up…

She set the cup down on the counter and reached for the honey when a sharp, piercing cry shattered the quiet.

Vi’s blood ran cold. It came from their bedroom.

Without thinking, she abandoned the tea and bolted down the hall, heart pounding against her ribs.

“Caitlyn?” she called out as she shoved the door open.

In front of her stood Caitlyn with her head in her hands. Vi rushed to her side gently lifting her head out of her hands before holding her shoulders firmly.

Caitlyn’s shoulders trembled under her touch.

“You’re trembling…” Vi whispered, “What’s going on?”

Caitlyn’s lips parted, but no words came. For a moment, she just looked at Vi.

You’re ready, Caitlyn told herself, You have to be.

“You need to know…” Caitlyn murmured, voice raw, “I can’t bear you not knowing…”

Vi swallowed hard, fingers twitching against Caitlyn’s jaw.

What? Vi continued to ask herself over and over in her head.

“Cupcake- ”

“Violet.”

Her full name. Not Vi. Not some teasing nickname.

Violet.

Her stomach twisted.

Vi’s grip on Caitlyn’s face instinctively tightened.

“Now you’re scaring me…”

“You should be… slightly.”

Caitlyn tried to force a chuckle, but her voice cracked. She swallowed hard. She felt as if Vi already could see her bump piercing through her clothes.

Vi’s brows knit together.

“Cait, what is it? Just tell me.”

Caitlyn’s chest rose and fell in uneven breaths.

Why is this so hard? Caitlyn asked herself as she felt light-headed as dropped her head.

“Hey, look at me.”

Caitlyn did. Vi’s pulse spiked as she witnessed her partner hold her silence.

“Did someone hurt you?” she asked concerningly, “Because if they did, I swear to god- ”

“No, Violet.” Caitlyn cut her off, “It’s not- no one hurt me.”

“Then what? You’re scaring the hell out of me…”

Caitlyn sucked in a breath.

“I’m pregnant.”

Vi froze. Her hands. Her breathing. Her thoughts… completely paralyzed. The world around them blurred.

Caitlyn pulled back slightly, giving her space.

Then, realization slammed into her full force.

“What?”

Caitlyn’s face crumpled as a tear slipped down her cheek.

“I—” Her voice broke, “I’m pregnant, Violet.”

She let out a shuddering breath.

“We’re going to have a baby.”

Vi’s lips trembled. Vi was completely disassociated.

Caitlyn sniffled.

“Please… say something.”

Vi blinked rapidly, like she was trying to wake herself up.

“We’re…” Vi’s voice came out hoarse, “We’re going to have a baby?”

A single tear broke free and slid down her cheek.

Caitlyn nodded, a choked sob escaping her.

“Yeah.”

Vi’s breath hitched. She lifted trembling hands, brushing her fingers over Caitlyn’s abdomen, barely touching.

There.

That’s where the baby is…

Our baby…

Vi’s head swam as she struggled to piece everything together.

This was real?

Vi’s mouth moved before her brain could catch up.

“So is it… mine?”

Caitlyn’s eyes snapped to her, flashing with irritation, before she punched Vi lightly on the arm.

“Are you serious? Of course it’s yours.”

Vi barely registered the words before the world tilted beneath her feet.

“The walls are spinning… I can’t… see- anyth- ” she mumbled gripping Caitlyn’s arm.

“No- darling- let me help you- ” Caitlyn reached for her, alarmed, but Vi stumbled backward.

She wiped at her face with the sleeve of her jacket, trying to ground herself.

“I just… holy shit. This is happening. This is actually happening.”

Caitlyn steadied her as a small smile tugged at her lips.

“Hey… be careful. We need momma to stay on her feet.”

Vi’s breath hitched.

Momma.

That word alone sent something electric shooting through her chest.

“You’re really having our baby,” she whispered.

Caitlyn’s expression softened.

“Yeah… I am.”

“How?” Vi finally asked, searching Caitlyn’s face for answers,  “I mean, how is this happening? I thought- ”

VI let out a nervous laugh, rubbing a hand down her face.

“I didn’t think something like this was even possible .

“I don’t know,” Caitlyn admitted, “With everything in our past… with hextech, potions, it’s hard to say.”

Vi exhaled sharply trying to stop her laughter.

“Was it the… erm… ‘special’ hextech gear?” Vi teased.

Caitlyn’s face immediately burned red. She looked thoroughly mortified.

Shit, Caitlyn said to herself

“I don’t know. There are no gemstones… so I don’t think so-“ Caitlyn lied through her teeth, “We’ll… sort that out later.”

Vi’s smirk faltered.

“How did this… How long have you known?”

Caitlyn rubbed her arm while she looked down.

“…Since the day of your attack.”

Vi’s stomach lurched.

“Three weeks?” Her voice cracked slightly, “Caitlyn… and- did you know when you came to save me?”

Caitlyn turned her head away but gave a small nod.

Vi’s heart clenched.

“Cait- ”

“Hey- none of that,” Caitlyn cut in, “Would you have preferred the alternative? I wasn’t going to let you die out there…”

Vi hesitated.

“I know… I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright…” Caitlyn trailed off, “I just, you’re the most important person in my life. Our baby…”

Caitlyn let out a soft sigh, watching her before reaching into her coat pocket. She fidgeted with something, her fingers brushing over it as if steadying herself. Then she carefully placed the photo into Vi’s hands.

“…They need you.”

Vi looked down, her breath catching in her throat.

A sonogram.

Her vision blurred slightly as she read the words printed along the bottom:

Baby Kiramman.

“Is this- ” Her voice wavered.

“It’s them,” Caitlyn whispered holding a smile, "They’re about four months along, healthy, and... well, perfect."

Vi sucked in a sharp breath, pressing the sonogram against her chest. Tears continued in her eyes before she could stop them.

“Oh… my-”

Her voice broke completely as she choked out a small laugh.

Caitlyn’s hands found her face attempting to brush away the tears.

“Darling…” she murmured.

Vi let out a wet chuckle as she shook her head.

“I can’t believe this.”

Caitlyn smiled as her hands stayed on Vi’s face.

“Are you… upset?” she whispered hesitantly.

Vi’s breath hitched, and she held the sonogram while pulling Caitlyn’s waist in.

“Upset?” she echoed, “How could I ever be upset about our baby?”

The words sent warmth blooming through Caitlyn’s chest. Vi’s hands drifted down, hesitating for only a moment before she brushed her fingers against the hem of Caitlyn’s shirt.

“Can I…?” Vi asked softly.

Caitlyn gave a small nod. Caitlyn’s small but noticeable bump was now revealed as Vi lifted her shirt. Vi hovered her hand over it, afraid that this wasn’t real. Slowly, her fingertips traced gentle patterns on Caitlyn’s skin causing Caitlyn to laugh.

“That tickles.”

Vi smiled up at her.

“It’s all making sense now,” Vi murmured, “The clothes, the sickness, why you- why we, fought…”

Before Caitlyn could respond, Vi sank to her knees. She rested her hands on either side of Caitlyn’s waist. Slowly, she pressed her lips to Caitlyn’s stomach. Caitlyn let out a shaky breath as her fingers instinctively threaded through Vi’s hair.

“I’ve got you,” Vi whispered against her skin, “I’ve got both of you…”

Caitlyn let out a choked laugh.

Vi looked up at her with gleaming eyes.

“Hey, little one,” Vi murmured, “I don’t know if you can hear me yet, but… it’s me. Your mom… Well- One of them, anyway.”

Caitlyn covered her mouth trying to cover her happy sob.

“You’re already so loved,” Vi continued, “More than you’ll ever know. And I swear to you- ” She pressed another lingering kiss to Caitlyn’s stomach, "Nothing's gonna get you while I'm here. I promise," Vi said, before kissing Caitlyn's stomach again, causing her to giggle despite still being teary-eyed.

Caitlyn sunk down to her knees to join her.

“Vi…”

Vi caught her in her arms.

“I mean it. I promise. I’ll never forsake you, or our baby.”

Caitlyn huffed out a laugh before pressing their mouths together. Vi melted into it, pulling Caitlyn closer while holding her hand on her stomach.

When they finally broke apart, Caitlyn cradled Vi’s face in her hands.

“You’re going to be the best mom,” Caitlyn whispered.

“I don’t know about that, Cupcake,” she murmured, her voice raw.

Caitlyn’s expression turned firm.

“I do,” she said with quiet certainty, “Our baby is going to have the most loving, protective, incredible mom.”

She leaned in to press a kiss to Vi’s forehead.

“They don’t even know how lucky they are.”

Vi exhaled shakily, her hands coming to rest over Caitlyn’s.

“If our baby is anything like you,” Vi said grinning, “I’m gonna be the luckiest Zaunite alive.”

Caitlyn let out a soft laugh, pressing another kiss to Vi’s forehead, then another to her nose.

“I love you so much.”

Vi grinned as she helped her up.

“I love you more.”

Caitlyn hummed, arching a delicate brow.

“That so?”

Vi smirked.

“Mmhm…”

Her hands slid lower teasingly gripping Caitlyn’s thighs.

“...but you can try to prove me wrong.”

Caitlyn laughed before leaning down to nip at Vi’s jaw.

“Oh, I intend to.”

Vi barely had a second to process it before Caitlyn pushed her down against the mattress, pinning her wrists above her head with ease.

“Oh,” Vi said blinking up at her, “We’re doing that tonight?”

Caitlyn tilted her head slightly.

"Got a problem with that?"

“Not even a little bit.”

Caitlyn smirked, lowering herself so their lips barely brushed.

"Then be a good girl and keep your hands exactly where they are."

Vi’s breath caught in her throat as her entire body tensed with anticipation.

“Shit, Cait… ”

“Shhh,” Caitlyn hushed her as her lips trailed teasingly down Vi’s neck, “You’re always so eager… but I must admit, I like you better when you’re squirming.”

Vi let out a strangled groan as her back arched slightly.

“You’re fucking killing me.”

Caitlyn chuckled.

“Oh, love…” Her hands traced slow down Vi’s torso, “I haven’t even started yet.”

Vi let out a breathy laugh.

“Then quit teasing and start.”

Caitlyn clicked her tongue.

"Hm... I’m not sure. I think I rather enjoy seeing you beg."

Vi groaned dramatically, throwing her head back.

“I hate you.”

Caitlyn grinned, leaning down until her lips hovered just above Vi’s.

“No, you don’t.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

2 Hours Later…

“As much as I’d love to keep going…” Vi murmured, her hands resting on Caitlyn’s thighs as she straddled her, “We should really get some sleep.”

Caitlyn let out a dramatic groan.

Vi chuckled as she gently brushed Caitlyn’s spine.

“Trust me, I’d keep you here all night if I could. But we’ve got a full day ahead of us.”

Caitlyn sighed as she nuzzled into Vi’s neck.

“Right… we’re seeing Ekko tomorrow.”

The mention of his name made Vi’s body tense ever so slightly. She turned her head away unsure what to say.

Caitlyn immediately noticed. She cupped Vi’s cheek, gently guiding her back to face her.

“Hey… what’s wrong?”

“I just- ” Vi swallowed hard, glancing down at Caitlyn’s stomach, “I don’t want you in the middle of this, Cait.”

Caitlyn’s lips pressed into a thin line.

“I’ve always been in the middle of this.”

“That was before…” Vi’s voice cracked slightly, “Before this. Before them.”

Her hand moved to rest over Caitlyn’s stomach again.

“It’s different now. I…” Vi said closing her eyes for a moment, “I need to know you’re safe.”

Vi thought back to Vander. Everything was clicking in her head the longer the thought of the baby lingered. The dream. One of the last things he told her.

…Protect the family… Vi swore she heard in the distance.

Caitlyn’s expression softened as she covered Vi’s hand with her own.

“I will be safe. I’ll be with you.”

Vi sighed.

“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. What if we get ambushed again- I can’t-”

Caitlyn cupped her face, her touch warm and firm.

"You don’t have to carry this alone, Vi. You never have. We’ll be careful, I swear. I’ll even wear extra gear if it’ll put your mind at ease."

Vi shook her head.

“It’s not just about me… or the gear… I can’t- I won’t let anything happen to you. Or to our baby.”

Caitlyn’s eyes shimmered as she squeezed Vi’s hand, her touch warm, grounding.

“We’re going to be okay,” she whispered, leaning her forehead against Vi’s, “We have to be.”

Vi let out a shaky breath, nodding as she closed her eyes.

“Yeah…”

A small and knowing smile played on Caitlyn’s lips.

"I promise, alright? We are Piltover’s finest, aren’t we?"

Vi huffed a quiet laugh, shaking her head.

“Hey- that’s my line.”

“I know.”

Vi pulled her closer, fingers threading through Caitlyn’s hair.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Chapter Text

Morning light filtered in through the thin curtains, casting a golden haze across the bedroom. Vi stirred first, her body sore in the best kind of way, a slow ache blooming along her thighs and shoulders. She blinked against the light a her eyes adjusted to find Caitlyn curled into her still fast asleep.

“Good morning, Cupcake,” Vi whispered as she pulled Caitlyn in tighter.

Caitlyn made a soft sound in her throat, eyes still closed as she pressed her face into Vi’s chest.

“Mmm… five more minutes...”

Vi chuckled as she brused her lips over Caitlyn’s temple.

“You said that five minutes ago.”

“And I’ll say it again five minutes from now,” Caitlyn murmured half-asleep hodling a gentle grin.

Vi shifted slightly, easing back just enough to press a lingering kiss to the top of Caitlyn’s head, then another soft one between her brows. Her hand slipped down to rest gently over Caitlyn’s gentle bump.

“Alright,” Vi said softly, “...but you two are making it real hard for me to get up and make breakfast...”

Caitlyn’s arm wrapped tighter around her now fully smiling.

“That’s because we don’t want you to leave. The baby and I want momma to stay here.”

Vi smiled against her hair.

“Is that so?”

"Mhm," Caitlyn hummed, "The baby hasn't even laid eyes on you, and already they’re hopelessly enamoured."

Vi laughed as she leaned down to kiss Caitlyn’s forehead once more before sliding under the covers to place another kiss on her belly.

“Hey, muffin,” she murmured against her skin, “You’re already our whole world, you know that?”

Caitlyn’s breath hitched.

“Muffin?” Caitlyn echoed with a breathy laugh.

Vi grinned, resting her cheek against Caitlyn’s stomach.

“Well, yeah. I’ve already got my cupcake… figured this little one needed a nickname too.”

Caitlyn shook her head while laughing.

“You’re ridiculous.”

“And you love it.”

Vi kissed her belly again.

“You hear that, muffin? Your mom thinks I’m ridiculous, but that’s alright. You and me? We’re gonna prove her wrong. I hear you already take a liking to me anyways...”

Caitlyn’s chest ached happily as she brushed her fingers through Vi’s hair

Vi looked up at her, her eyes shining.

“I’ll make you both breakfast,” Vi said softly, pressing a light kiss to Caitlyn’s shoulder, “Then we really have to get going… unfortunately, vigilantes don’t wait.”

Caitlyn gave her a tired smile.

“Thank you... I love you.”

Vi smiled back at her as she pulled off the sheets and quickly made her way downstairs.

When Vi left the room Caitlyn's smile quickly left her face.

She began to sit up slowly as her chest began to tighten.

Breathe, Cait. She knows now… the baby isn't a secret anymore... it’s going to be fine… but-

Her eyes fell to the dresser. She didn’t want to look. But she did.

She rose, almost reluctantly, and opened the top drawer. The gemstones sat there neatly contained.

She reached out, picking one up between shaking fingers. It sparked gently against her skin, like it was alive.

Vi still doesn’t know about you… and that's a problem...

What will she even think?

She’s not too far off anyway… it’s only a matter of time before she puts it together... before she knows how the baby was truly concieved.

Part of her wanted to cry. Part of her wanted to laugh.

Is this really what it’s come to? She asked herself softly.

Hiding dangerous magic in her dresser like it was just another pair of gloves.

She didn’t want this. Any of it. She never wanted to be someone who kept secrets from Vi. Or someone who carried the weight of a city’s destruction like a second skin.

She just wanted to love Vi.

To love her family.

To be enough.

But somehow it always felt out of reach…

Oh my sweet muffin… what are we going to do about this?

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn sat hunched over her desk, the dim hum of the suspended hextech diagrams casting a faint glow across her face. Her study was a chaos of open books and scattered notes, pages filled with half-translated journal entries, anatomical illustrations, and dense research excerpts written in Jayce’s scrawl. She hadn't slept more than a few hours in days.

Not since the confirmation of her pregnancy.

She dragged a hand down her face, eyes aching from the strain.

“It’s not possible,” she whispered to the silence.

She had said them a dozen times.

The evidence didn’t lie.

Her body was changing, undeniably but now… it begged for answers. Even answers she didn't know existed.

She ran her fingers over the page again. It was one of Jayce’s old notes she’d practically memorized by now. It wasn’t something he ever published, just something she’d found tucked away in the back of his field journal. It almost felt like she wasn’t meant to find it.

“When exposed to concentrated Hex-crystals, particularly in warm, enclosed environments, the technology begins to mimic adaptive patterns–sympathetic energy transfer becomes less mechanical, more organic. Especially when bodily matter or DNA is involved.”

Caitlyn blinked down at the line.

Her eyes narrowed.

That night came back in a rush. The sound of Vi’s laugh muffled by her own skin. The way her hands had fumbled with the hexstrap between kisses. Vi had put it on more as a joke, blushing, teasing, not knowing Caitlyn had left a handful of charged crystals sitting in her coat that had been tossed to the floor.

And the crystals that were scattered just a few feet away had been humming faintly. She remembered the very dim flicker of blue light, the brief pulse against Vi’s skin.

They’d both ignored it.

But now, she couldn’t.

Sweat. Skin cells. Lingering traces of DNA between both of them. Enclosed space. Elevated temperature. Resonance spike. The data points were all there…

She swallowed hard as she stared at the page anxiously.

“What if it wasn’t just measuring… what if it was reacting?” she murmured softly to herself.

Jayce’s later experiments hinted that Hextech didn’t simply interact with life… it learned from it. Adapted to patterns. And when exposed to certain biological compounds, it could replicate signals. Even activate dormant genetic potential. O f the strap retained skin cells, even sweat, from both of them… it was enough. It could’ve been enough...

She pressed a hand flat to her stomach. It was still small. Still easy to hide.

“You’re… real,” she whispered, “And we didn’t even know we made you.”

Her throat tightened.

She had seen many things in her time as an enforcer: broken systems, broken people. But this? This wasn’t broken. It was accidental, yes, of course. But not broken.

It had been nearly a full day since she had gone to the marketplace on a usual stroll when she had encountered an incident that stuck deeply with her.

There was a zaunite boy, only barely a teenager who was pinned to the ground with a knee to his spine. No cause. No evidence. Just suspicion.

Caitlyn had stepped in without thinking. She didn’t hesitate. She raised her voice as she invoked her name, her family, and her rank. It still carried weight. The enforcer backed off, but not out of respect. More like resentment.

The boy’s mother had clutched him close, eyes darting between Caitlyn and the badge pinned to her coat. There was something like gratitude in her expression but there was also another look. It was a quiet fear, as if she was ashamed that she’d even bothered to interact with topsiders.

And the enforcer… he’d looked Caitlyn in the eye and sneered, like she was the one crossing a line.

As if he didn’t know who she was.

As if he didn’t know who she was married to.

Caitlyn didn’t know what else she could say. She Just watched as the boy was led away, free but not safe. The enforcer stalked off like he’d been robbed of something he was owed.

“Thanks a lot, Councilor-” He mumbled under his breath as he turned away.

Caitlyn’s fingers had curled into her coat as she stood there.

“I won’t allow you to grow up in this violence.” Caitlyn pleaded silently as she was pulled out of her thoughts.

“I keep telling myself it will improve. It has to, right? If I work hard enough, speak loudly enough, if I can somehow make them see that Zaunites are not monsters and Piltovans are not saviours… perhaps there’s still something here worth salvaging. We can make mends.”

Her fingers trembled slightly as she grew frustrated.

“That boy reminded me of your mom. That same fire in his eyes. The same fury, buried under exhaustion.”

Caitlyn suddenly paused.

“Your mom was… imprisoned for seven years. Seven years- for nothing. No trial. No chance to speak, no appeal. Just condemned by circumstance. By someone who abused their power. She emerged from that cell carrying wounds no one should ever bear… and yet she fights on. Every single day.”

“I don’t know how you got here. That’s… the truth of it. And I hate that. I hate not knowing. I’m supposed to be the one with answers, the one who thinks first, who sees the whole picture before anyone else notices the frame.”

“I handled those stones without thinking… I’ll admit it. I kept them too close, too long. I told myself it was precaution, but… perhaps that was a lie I found rather convenient. And now you’re here. And I’m left with questions no scientist or council report could possibly account for.”

Her gaze drifted toward the window.

“I’m frightened. Not of you. Never of you. But of what the world might do when it finds out what you are… what you might be. This city doesn’t have a kind history when it comes to things it doesn’t understand. And Piltover has never made space for mistakes… especially not ones that breathe.”

She looked down again.

“You are not a mistake.”

“You are… impossible. And miraculous. And entirely mine. Entirely ours.”

“I promise, you will never ever have to hold fear for who you are. You are, the greatest gift we’ve ever made.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

“How are you feeling?” Vi asked as she slipped on her remaining gear.

“I’m… nervous, admittedly,” Caitlyn said, “Nervous because, well- this might actually lead to something resembling a resolution.”

Vi chuckled.

“You sound like a damn diplomat.”

“I am diplomatic,” Caitlyn sniffed, “Someone around here has to be.”

Vi smirked.

“Alright, Lady Peace Talks- how’s your gear feeling?”

“Rather more constricting than I’d like, though I daresay I’m managing.”

Vi's grin widened.

“That’s what carrying our baby’ll do to you.”

“Oh, shut up,” Caitlyn said rolling her eyes, “You’re intolerable sometimes… and far too charming for your own good.”

Caitlyn stepped forward to press a kiss to Vi’s cheek.

Vi blinked at her, caught somewhere between a smirk and something far gentler. The teasing in her eyes slowly faded.

Caitlyn caught the change in an instant.

“What is it?”

Vi looked down for a moment.

“I know I asked you to come with me, Cait… but I’m kind of sweating bullets over here. This could go sideways, fast. I just… I need you to be careful.”

Caitlyn didn’t hesitate. She reached for Vi’s hand and laced their fingers together.

“My love,” she said calmly, “I am always careful. Besides, you forget- I’m not made of porcelain.”

Vi gave a quiet laugh.

“You kind of are.”

“Well,” Caitlyn replied, “this porcelain has a remarkably steady aim and a tendency to end arguments with a single shot.”

“I know. That’s what scares me… you can just- never be to careful.”

Caitlyn paused, her gaze holding Vi’s a second too long.

“Don’t be scared,” she said, voice steady but soft, “We’re a team. We always have been. I’ve got you… and you’ve got me.”

She reached for her coat.

“Now come on,” she added, “Like you said- vigilantes don’t wait.”

Chapter 12: To The Hideout

Summary:

hi!

thank you for tuning into chapter 12!

i meant to upload this last night but i'll be so real... i fell asleep hardcore editing. i have been fairly exhausted, emotionally lately. before i started writing this story initially, i had just gottem out of a 2 year long relationship and i have been going through my phases of being inspired and then gravely haunted by it. this past week i have been in a brutal stage of my grief, and have taken some time away to better myself. with that- i had to lowkey reread and re study my plot for this story. however, this has been such an amazing experience and i love the challenge of writing and how it grants me a way to cope. so thank you for all those who continue to read. it's been a huge blessing <3

this is a much shorter chapter, just some light fluff but the next chapter we are gonna start to really hit our main quest! prepare for the hurt/comfort trope!

sorry not sorry.

The shadows of the old district clung to them like smoke, thick and restless in the air. Every step echoed louder than it should have, as if the city itself knew they shouldn’t be there. Caitlyn kept her head low beneath her hood, one hand pressed instinctively to her side.

The silence between them had stretched too long.

Vi paused to check a crumbling wall. She grazed her fingers on the old Piltovian crest painted over with Zaunite graffiti.

“We’re close to the border now. Few more turns and we’re out of the clear. Let’s try to not draw too much attention.”

Vi glanced back to check their path to find Caitlyn wasn’t beside her anymore.

She turned, and her breath caught.

Caitlyn stood at the edge of a rusted service balcony, several feet above the ground.

“Cait- what the hell are you doing?”

Caitlyn didn’t flinch. She crouched slightly, testing the flex of her knees, eyes scanning the line of connected rooftops and scaffolding that cut across the alley.

“Heading to the Undercity”

Vi’s boots scuffed against the floor as she hurried over.

“Through the lanes?”

Caitlyn turned to face her.

“You’re the one who insisted we keep a low profile.”

“Yeah, before I knew you were carrying our- ” Vi cut herself off, “Cait… we can’t go through the lanes. They’re exposed. If someone recognizes us- ”

“Then they see two Enforcers in full gear, cutting through the same routes we always have. We take any other way and we look like we’re hiding something.”

Caitlyn’s voice was low.

Vi stepped in close, eyes scanning the armor. She reached out and placed a hand over Caitlyn’s stomach.

“The baby…” Vi began.

“...Is fine,” Caitlyn whispered, pressing her hand over Vi’s, “I promise. Vi, we talked about this.”

Vi’s frown slowly crept on her face as she nestled closer.

“What if something happens? What if I can’t stop it? I just found out, Cait… I didn’t even get a second to breathe before you were back in your boots and loading your rifle.”

Caitlyn looked up at her as she tighten her grip on Vi’s hand.

“I don’t have the luxury of falling apart,” Caitlyn said, softer this time, “I want this. I want us. But we’re not safe…not yet. And pretending we are does not help anyone.”

Vi’s jaw clenched.

“You shouldn’t have to do this.”

“But I do-”

“But you don't-”

“This is precisely what I understood when I accepted this position. Every day I step into that building in search of a solution, I do so knowing full well that I may not walk out again. But- ”

Caitlyn said trailing off.

Mom.

“…but I made peace with that a long time ago. It’s worth it. I want to help people. This, what we are doing, is going to help a lot of people.”

Vi nodded slowly trying to hold her emotions in.

“I know… you're right. You know, you’re kinda amazing Cupcake…”

Caitlyn gently held her face.

Then she whispered, “...Once we’re home, maybe we could start talking about names. Just… something to look forward to. Something to hold onto.”

Vi pulled back just enough to see her face. Her eyes wide with something tender and awestruck.

“Yeah?”

Caitlyn nodded.

“Yeah.”

Vi’s voice was barely a breath.

“You already have one in mind, don’t you?”

Caitlyn bit back a smile.

“Maybe.”

Vi squinted suspiciously.

“Tell me it’s not some posh Piltovian nonsense.”

Caitlyn’s smile only grew, slow and smug.

“Cait.” Vi narrowed her eyes, “If you say something like Arabella or Seraphina, I swear- ”

“I’m only kidding,” Caitlyn said, giggling, “Mostly. Though, for the record, Arabella does have a certain grace to it.”

Vi groaned dramatically.

“Yeah, the grace of someone who’s never had to fight a day in her life.”

“Well then, you’ll be pleased to know that if I ever suggested such a name, it would be purely for irony’s sake.”

“Uh huh. I can hear the lace in your voice already.”

Caitlyn nudged her gently.

“Anyway, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First we need to survive the next twenty-four hours. And after that… names.”

Vi nodded, still smiling, then paused as something occurred to her.

“Wait... you’re being suspiciously calm. Gosh. What did you do?”

Caitlyn arched a brow.

“I didn’t-”

“Caitlyn,” Vi said, growing anxious.

“Fine.” She groaned, “I sent a letter to the council before we left. Letting them know I’d be taking a brief leave of absence due to... personal matters.”

Vi stared at her.

“You what?”

“I couldn’t very well disappear without a word,” Caitlyn said more direct, “Piltover bureaucracy is many things, but patient is not one of them. You think they wouldn’t come tearing through half the Undercity the moment I missed a single shift?”

Vi made a face.

“You’re supposed to be off the grid.”

“Yes, well, I am. Officially, I'm attending to a family emergency in a confidential location. My father’s signature lent a certain… urgency to the request.”

Vi looked somewhere between exasperated and impressed.

“How’d you manage to get that?”

Caitlyn smirked.

“I’ve had access to his seal since I was fourteen.”

Vi blinked.

“You forged it?”

“I did. Quite flawlessly, if I may say so.”

Vi just stared at her for a second.

“Caitlyn bloody Kiramman. You forged a sanctioned leave with your stolen father’s house seal.”

Caitlyn shrugged with mock modesty.

“He really should’ve hidden it better. Besides, it’s not as if he’ll report it. He hasn’t needed to make any formal requests since the passing of- ”

Her voice faltered.

“Hey,” Vi said softly, “You don’t have to explain. I know.”

Caitlyn inhaled slowly.

“It’s fine. Just habit, I suppose. Thinking of her when it comes to these things.”

Vi didn’t say anything right away. She just reached out brushing her fingers against Caitlyn’s wrist.

“She’d understand what you’re doing. Why you had to do it.”

Caitlyn gave a small nod before responding, “Maybe. She always did say the council loved their rules more than their people.”

Vi smiled faintly.

“Smart woman.”

“She was,” Caitlyn said, a quiet pride in her voice, “And she’d still call this forged seal excellent penmanship.”

Vi huffed out a laugh, grateful for the shift.

“You and your damn paperwork.”

“I prefer the term preparedness.”

“Right. And I prefer not being hunted down by half the Enforcers because their golden girl vanished without notice.”

“Well,” Caitlyn said with a light shrug, “Now they’ll wait at least a week before mobilizing the search party. You’re welcome.”

Vi laughed.

“You’re terrifying, you know that?”

“I do try.” Caitlyn smiled, “Now come on. Before I start drafting a formal itinerary for this escape.”

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

The city changed the deeper they went. Piltover's clean lines and polished stone gave way to rusted beams and fractured glass. They dropped lower into the Undercity, moving through twisting side passages and half-collapsed maintenance corridors Vi had once called home.

Caitlyn followed Vi’s lead. She stepped carefully over the slick metal grates of the lanes. They moved like ghosts, darting through shadow, dropping through utility shafts and clambering over pipes fat with steam.

“You sure these are the right tunnels?” Caitlyn asked quietly, scanning a wall scorched with old graffiti.

Vi nodded, brushing her hand over a faded Firelight mark.

“They don’t mark the path unless it’s safe. We’re close.”

“How close?”

Vi glanced up toward a rusted ladder bolted to the far wall.

“Close enough to need our heads down.”

Without another word, she started climbing.

Caitlyn followed Vi up the ladder carefully. The moment her boots hit the grating above, the air seemed to shift. This part of Zaun hadn’t seen sunlight in decades.

They moved quietly through the corridor. There was a disused maintenance walkway tucked between collapsed metal beams and the carcass of an old rail line. It was quiet. Too quiet.

Caitlyn’s hand brushed the grip of her rifle, more out of instinct than fear.

Then…

A sudden flash of motion.

Before either of them could speak, three masked figures dropped down from the rafters above, silent as shadows. One of them lunged toward Caitlyn, a flicker of steel in his hand.

Vi shouted, “Wait- !”

But Caitlyn was already moving.

With a swift pivot, she ducked beneath the blade and rammed her elbow into the attacker’s gut, spinning him into the wall. The second came at her from the side, but Caitlyn didn’t hesitate. She slid her foot beneath his stance and knocked him flat, rifle drawn and leveled in a single fluid motion.

The third Firelight paused, hand still raised mid-strike visibly reassessing.

Vi stared, blinking.

“Cait.”

“Identify yourselves!” Caitlyn ordered.

The tension crackled.

Then a fourth figure stepped out from the far corridor. The others froze immediately.

“Stand down.”

The Firelights backed off instantly, two helping the third up from the floor.

Ekko approached with a wry smile.

“Sorry. I should’ve made sure everyone on today’s patrol was aware I was expecting company.”

Caitlyn lowered her rifle. Vi turned to her with her brows raised.

“Remind me never to piss you off,” She said still stunned.

Caitlyn allowed the faintest smile.

“Noted.”

Ekko chuckled at them.

“Still sharp as ever. You two alright?”

Vi gave a huff.

“Would’ve been nice to not get jumped five feet from your front door.”

“You know we have to take precaution Vi”

“Yeah yeah, just figured you respected us more, little man.”

Ekko let out a soft chuckle before pulling Vi into a quick hug. He started toward Caitlyn, arms open in greeting but Vi's smile faltered. There was a flicker of panic flashing across her face.

“Erm- anyways,” Vi interjected as she moved between the two of them.

Caitlyn looked at her confused.

“Um... Cupcake, can I- Erm... Can I get a word?” Vi asked, glancing between Ekko and Caitlyn.

Caitlyn looked back at her holding her confused look before turning to Ekko.

Ekko lifted his hands in an easygoing shrug.

“Sure, take your time.”

Vi gently tugged Caitlyn aside. She guided her just far enough that their voices wouldn’t carry. The moment they were alone, Vi’s gaze cracked. Her eyes darted toward where Ekko waited.

“Listen…” Vi started, “I love you. And I love him, I do. He’s family to me…”

She let out a breath, her voice dropping low.

“...I just… for our sake, for the baby’s sake... we gotta be smart. Let’s not… let’s not risk anyone finding out. Not yet. Not until we’re somewhere safer. Okay?”

She glanced down unconsciously at Caitlyn’s stomach.

“You're right, Vi. I agree. ” Caitlyn replied with a soft grin.

Good call, Vi.

My pregnancy being out there could start unwanted rumors about this baby’s origins…

What would possibly come of that?

Nothing good.

Caitlyn was quickly snapped out of her thoughts by Vi lacing their fingers together.

“Thanks, Cupcake,” she mumbled, voice rough, “I love you.”

“I love you more” Caitlyn whispered causing Vi to blush.

Hand in hand, they made their way back to Ekko.

“All good?” Ekko asked, tilting his head.

“Yes… Vi just needed to brief me on a minor adjustment to our patrol plan,” Caitlyn said smoothly, “Nothing serious. Just precautionary.”

Ekko nodded.

“Fair enough. You two are the pros.”

Vi gave Caitlyn a look a smirk hiding beneath her eyes.

“Brief you, huh?”

Caitlyn lifted an eyebrow

“I believe that’s the polite term for ‘corner me and mumble until it made sense,’” Caitlyn said teasingly.

Vi laughed under her breath, bumping Caitlyn lightly with her hip.

“You love it.”

Caitlyn smiled, the edge of it wicked. “Tolerate would be the word I’d use… but yes. I do.”

“Okay Piltover’s Finest, can we please get to the real reason we are here.”

They both took a glance at one another, Vi grasping Caitlyn’s hand.

“Where should we start?”

Chapter Text

Ekko leaned back against the crumbling wall, arms folded tight across his chest.

"Something’s been brewing for a while now. Gangs in Zaun are getting stronger, smarter. Too many of em carrying weapons that don’t belong down here."

Caitlyn nodded grimly.

“Some of the attackers were identified as former Noxian soldiers.”

Ekko’s head lifted slightly.

“At the council meeting,” Caitlyn continued, “Mel confirmed it. Ambessa’s men… her mother’s forces. They wouldn’t have allied with Zaunites unless there was something massive to gain.”
She glanced between them.

“This isn’t just about survival anymore... They want Piltover to fall. And without Hextech on our side…” she exhaled slowly, “…we're exposed.”

Ekko’s expression darkened.

“Makes sense,” he muttered, “When shimmer stopped being the biggest threat, they needed something else. If Piltover’s defenses are down-” he shook his head, “-they’ll move fast. Hit you while you’re weak.”

Vi's jaw flexed.

"And with Hextech off the table," she added, "they don’t have much standing in their way."

Caitlyn gave a tight nod.

“The council’s ordered a full sweep- every piece of Hextech machinery accounted for or dismantled. And all remaining stones are locked down.”

She hesitated, glancing at Vi.

Ekko ran a hand through his hair.

"Then you’re right to be worried. They won’t stop at Piltover's walls. Once they break through... Zaun’s gonna catch the fallout too."

"They’re already testing the waters," he said, "Two of our smaller hideouts got hit last week. Quick strikes. They knew where to hit and what to torch. Supplies, tech, comms gear… all gone."

"You think they’re working with someone down here?" Vi asked.

Ekko shrugged.

"If they are, it’s someone who knows how we move. Someone feeding them just enough to hurt us without tipping their hand."

Caitlyn’s brows drew together.

"Undermining you would destabilize Zaun from the inside. Keep the Firelights too busy scrambling to defend themselves to protect anyone else."

Ekko nodded grimly.

"Exactly. And once we’re scattered, they can move on Piltover without worrying about the streets rising up. With that, they can also easily pick us off, group by group…"

He gently looked up.
"I’ve already started relocating the younger ones. We’re consolidating supplies, pulling back to deeper tunnels we haven’t used in years. Places even old maps forgot about."

Vi watched him carefully.

“You’re planning for a siege," she said quietly.

Ekko met her eyes.

“I’m planning to make it hurt if they try."

He pushed off the cracked wall and moved to the battered steel table where the map of Zaun and Piltover lay spread out. Red thread webbed across it, marking tunnels, old shimmer routes, scavenger drop points.

“They don’t need Hextech to win," he said, "They just need time. Time to patch it together… time to build something big enough to finish what Silco started. Hextech is just the cherry on top. Makes the whole thing easier to execute."

Vi followed him to the table, frowning.

"You think they’re that close?"

Ekko nodded grimly.

"Closer than anyone up top wants to admit."

Caitlyn stepped forward, hands clasped neatly behind her back.

"We’ve already cleared six zones with patrols. Pieces of jury-rigged Hextech were recovered… haphazard, yes, but functional. Enough to cause significant damage."

Ekko’s jaw tightened.

“So it’s already leaking onto the streets.”

“Yes," Caitlyn said, "Necessitating the sweeps into Zaun. However...the council is... conflicted regarding the next steps."

Vi cocked an eyebrow.

"Conflicted about what? Thought stopping bombs in the streets was a pretty easy call."

"They fear aggressive action will be perceived as betrayal. Piltover has spent months promising peace and integration. If we strike too hard, we risk confirming Zaun’s worst suspicions- that we never intended to treat them as equals."

Ekko gave a short, humorless laugh.

"They’re worried about looking bad. Not about what happens when one of those rigs guts the Promenade."

"They’re politicians," Caitlyn said, "Perception is their currency."

Vi folded her arms tightly.

“So while they draft pretty speeches, we’re supposed to hope nobody lights the match?” Vi said frustrated.

"No," Ekko said, voice hardening, "That’s why we’re handling it. Quietly. With consideration from the council of course"

He gave a joking smile to Caitlyn.

“Oh, hush. You also know why I took the role of a councilor.”

“Yes, Councilor- I do…” He said, holding his grin.

He leaned over the map, pointing to a sector near the Boneway.

"First sweep’s here. Old pump stations lighting up again. Scavengers going missing. Then we move west- to the Verge refinery tunnels. If we find anything active- labs, cores, assembly… we tear it down."

Vi scanned the tangle of red lines.

"And it’s just the three of us?"

Ekko nodded.

“More people means more noise. More tracks to follow. We stay lean. Quick.”

Caitlyn studied the map with a slight frown.

“Rather precarious odds,” Caitlyn remarked, fingers brushing the edge of the old map.

“Wouldn’t be the first time.”

Vi leaned close, brushing her knuckles against Caitlyn’s hand with an easy smile.

“We’ve survived worse, Cupcake.”

She tilted her head toward Ekko.

“You sure you’re ready for two weeks underground with us?”

Ekko smirked.

“I’ll live. Hopefully.”

He waved them on, and they followed him deeper through the tunnels.

“I’ve been pulling everyone I can down to the core levels,” Ekko said, voice quieter now as they walked. “Families. Kids. Elders. Anyone who can’t run fast.”

He paused at a junction where a steel door had been welded shut.

“We’ve reinforced every fallback path we still trust. Hidden exits. Supply drops. Signal flares. If it comes to it, we vanish. And we don’t leave anyone behind.”

“I’ve seen what happens when people don’t have a plan,” Ekko continued. “When no one comes for them. And I won’t let that happen to these people… not again...”

He didn’t say Silco’s name. He didn’t need to. They all knew…

They turned a corner, the tunnel widening briefly where the wall had been partially knocked through. On the other side, behind a draped curtain and some makeshift crates, laughter rang out.

A toddler ran barefoot through a narrow hallway squealing with joy. Behind them, a woman followed. She seemed tired but was smiling while chasing the toddler. Behind her, another woman, visibly pregnant, leaned against the wall, hand resting on her lower back. She watched with an exhausted kind of bliss.

Vi slowed.

The laughter cut through something inside her like a blade.

God, I wonder what it’s gonna be like to meet them… our baby… Vi gently asked herself.

She watched the family for only a second. However, she couldn’t shake the thought from her head.

Caitlyn came up beside her equally in awe.

And without even thinking, her hand took hold of Vi’s

A soft touch. Instinctive. Gentle. Knowing…

I love you.

Ekko stopped ahead at a door in a back corridor. He shoved it open with his shoulder and motioned inside.

“Here. It’s not much, but it’s quiet. Good walls. You’ll rest here till nightfall. I’ve got more evac teams to check in on before we move. A few more supplies to shift. But we’ll go as soon as it’s dark.”

He looked at both of them.

“Take the time. Rest. Talk. Whatever you need to do to be ready.”

Vi gave a short nod.

“We will.”

Caitlyn looked back and nodded.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Vi dropped her bag with a heavy sigh. Caitlyn entered behind her, glancing around the space.

She paused in the doorway for a long moment.

A strange ache swelled behind her ribs.

Vi noticed the look on her face.

“Hey,” she said gently, nudging Caitlyn with her shoulder, “You okay?”

Caitlyn let out a quiet laugh, stepping further inside the room but keeping her eyes on the glowing corridor below.

“I just… I can’t believe how lucky I am sometimes.”

Vi’s brow lifted as she dropped onto the cot beside her.

“Yeah? Not really what I thought you’d say. Especially not now.”

Caitlyn didn’t answer right away.

“Meeting you felt like fate,” she said softly, “But marrying you? Carrying this child with you? That was luck. The kind you don’t ask for. The kind that shows up anyway and wrecks your whole sense of logic.”

Vi followed her gaze.

“Wrecked you, did I?”

“Utterly,” Caitlyn said, turning to face her, “And I’ve never been more grateful for anything in my life.”

Vi smiled, softer now. Her hand drifted to Caitlyn’s stomach.

“Still fascinated this is happening,” Vi murmured, “You really have no idea how it was even possible?”

Caitlyn’s heart slammed in her chest.

“Erm… I- um…”

The sound escaped her before she could stop it. Not hesitation. Panic. Pure and sudden.

Her spine went rigid. Her lungs suddenly forgot how to breathe.

She wasn’t in the Firelight base anymore.

The room fell away.

She was back on that rooftop.

Tied to a chair.

Jinx’s breath on her cheek. Laughing like it was all a joke. The sound of metal grinding. The tang of blood in her mouth.

Her mind blanked.

The gun.

The tremble in Powder’s fingers.

The look in her eyes when she pulled the trigger anyway.

The silence in her mother’s house. The blast that leveled the west wing. The ash… So much ash and rubble…

The stone. Glowing in Jinx’s palm. Buzzing… waiting…

And the most terrifying part…

The realization when Vi was still gone, when there was no one left to talk to…

No one was coming for her.

“Cait?”

Caitlyn suddenly snapped up.

“I- I can’t…” Caitlyn choked, grabbing at her coat.

“Cait, what’s going on? Hey, look at me- look at me.”

Vi was already off the cot gripping her face gently.

Caitlyn’s eyes were wide and distant. Her whole frame shook.

“I can’t… breathe… ” she rasped.

Vi panicked for half a second.

“It’s not real, Cait. You’re safe. With me. Just us.”

Caitlyn didn’t answer.

“Come on, cupcake,” Vi whispered, “In through your nose. That’s it. You’re going to be okay. I promise. I’ve got you.”

Bit by bit, Caitlyn matched her.

And then without a word, she pulled away...

I can’t do this.

“I need air,” she said, breath still catching. “I just- I need- ”

“Cait…”

“I’ll be right back.”

She didn’t meet Vi’s eyes as she turned and slipped out the door.

Vi remained kneeling on the floor for a moment, her heart racing.

She stared after her.

What just happened?

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

Caitlyn began to wander around the Firelight base. She stepped quietly past rows of crates and makeshift walls, eventually reaching an opening that overlooked a courtyard.

She paused.

Small groups of people were gathered, laughing and playing. A child darted past with a toy made of scrap metal giggling as someone chased after him.

In the midst of all this, they still know how to smile.

How is that?

Caitlyn’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking. She folded her arms, trying to will the trembling away, but it only made her shoulders tense.

“Looking for something?”

Ekko’s voice cut through the quiet.

She turned quickly.

“No- uh, I’m sorry.”

“You leave Vi behind?”

Caitlyn lied, “She needed some rest.”

“Vi? That’s unlike her.”

“Uh-”

“I’m joking with you topsider. Although, it is unlike her. Everything okay?”

Caitlyn looked down.

“Do you think our efforts will be enough?”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m afraid of anymore innocent people losing their lives over a situation that should’ve been delt with on my part. The power of hextech… should’ve been handled far earlier…”

“You can’t completely blame yourself for that-”

“Then who is there to blame? I have been part of that system. I’m trying to change it but-”

“Caitlyn…” Ekko said as he placed a hand on her shoulder

“When Vi first told me about you, i was skeptical. I mean, Vi- lingering around with an enforcer of all people? You have to admit that was out of the norm for her.”

Caitlyn stared at the ground.

“But even after losing your- ” Ekko caught himself, “you came back. You didn’t run or disappear. You stayed. And you’ve spent the last few years working to fix the problems most people just pretend don’t exist.”

Caitlyn folded her arms, posture composed but tight.

“Some days, it still feels performative. Like I’m playing dress-up in a role too noble to be real… while the city burns beneath our feet.”

“You didn’t build the system,” Ekko said gently, “You inherited it.”

“I didn’t question it either,” she murmured, “Not until I saw what it had done to her. To even Powder. And by then… the damage was irreversible.”

Ekko leaned in slightly, quieter now.

“You know, when Vi first told me about you, I thought she was kidding. An enforcer? A Kiramman? I figured she was having some sort of breakdown.”

“I’m still not entirely convinced she wasn’t,” Caitlyn replied dryly.

He grinned, but it softened quickly.

“But then you fought with us. You didn’t just talk policy- you were in the dirt with us. That changed things. You know?”

Caitlyn gave a small smile.

“I think about her sometimes. Powder...”

That surprised him.

Caitlyn kept her eyes ahead.

“It’s difficult. I never truly knew her. And she’s tied to a time I’m still… working through. Losing my mother. Being taken. There are memories I don’t let myself examine too closely. But I think about what she meant to Vi. And that’s enough to make me wish things had been different.”

“She would’ve liked you,” Ekko said after a pause, “Eventually. You’d have scared the hell out of her at first.”

“I do that to most people,” Caitlyn replied.

He chuckled.

“True. But I think Powder would've respected how much you love Vi. You married her. That’s no small thing.”

“I think I scared her more than anyone,” Caitlyn admitted, “But she still said yes to marry me.”

Ekko gave her a playful nudge.

“You’re a braver person than I’ll ever be.”

“Oh don’t say that. I’ve yet to eat anything that’s glowing and sold from a pipe.”

“Give it time.”

They both laughed.

Caitlyn’s laughter softened.

“Sometimes I wonder what she’d think if she saw us now. Married. With- ”

She froze.

Ekko’s brow lifted.

“With…?”

Caitlyn’s breath caught in her throat.

“With matching tattoos. That Vi insisted were necessary.”

Ekko squinted.

“You have matching tattoos?”

Caitlyn tilted her chin.

“No. But she insists we should. Says it’s part of the whole marriage thing.”

Ekko chuckled, but something in his gaze lingered. Almost for too long…

Then to cut the moment, she stepped forward and drew him into a quick forced hug.

Ekko returned it with unassuming warmth. However, the moment his hand brushed against her side, just low enough to feel the faintest curve beneath the fabric of her coat, she froze again.

She pulled away with a gentle laugh that didn’t quite land.

“Sorry- I, um… remembered something.”

Ekko blinked.

“You alright?”

“Yes. Just a bit off. Too much on my mind.”

He paused. Then he smiled, letting her off the hook.

“Well, you wear it well. Even frazzled, you’re still terrifyingly composed.”

She smiled.

“I try.”

As she turned to walk away, her hand lingered over her coat. Subtle. Protective. Almost unconscious.

And Ekko stood behind, brows furrowed ever so slightly.

There was something more.

He just didn’t know what.

Yet.

✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧*•.¸✧

The door creaked softly as Caitlyn stepped back inside their temporary home.

She paused.

Vi sat hunched on the edge of the cot with the sonogram held in both hands like it might break. Her thumb traced slow circles on it. It was clear that she had been crying.

Caitlyn’s chest ached at the sight.

“You brought it?” she asked gently, stepping closer.

Vi startled slightly.

“Yeah,” she said, “Didn’t even think about it. Just… felt like I needed to.”

Caitlyn sat beside her, arms wrapping around Vi’s shoulders. She rested her chin lightly on Vi’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” Caitlyn whispered.

Vi glanced at her.

“For what?”

“For making a scene.”

Vi shook her head, shifting to meet her gaze.

“I’d never blame you for that. Not after… what she did to you. To your family…”

“I know,” Caitlyn murmured, “But I still… I don’t want to carry that into us. Into them.”

Vi gently took Caitlyn’s face in her hands and kissed her forehead.

Then she said, “I guess I just don’t understand how… talking about the baby brought you back there. To that place… Was it… me?”

Caitlyn pulled back.

“What do you mean?”

Vi hesitated. Her voice cracked just slightly.

“Do you think I’ve… cursed this baby? Because of who I am? Because of Jinx?”

Caitlyn froze, her eyes wide.

“Vi- no. Why would you even-?”

“I don’t know,” Vi cut in, standing abruptly, “I just…”

“Vi-”

“The last 48 hours have been, a lot,” she said, pacing now. “I find out my wife’s pregnant. We’re about to head into what might be a suicide mission. And I can’t stop thinking… what happens if we survive all of this?”

Caitlyn stood too, arms crossed protectively over her stomach.

“What do you mean by that?”

“I mean…” Vi turned to her, “What then? Say we stop them. Say we win. I still feel this… weight.”

“The weight of what?”

Vi nodded slowly.

“Motherhood terrifies me.”

Caitlyn stepped forward and folded her arms around her.

“You know I love you,” she said, placing a kiss against Vi’s cheek, “More than anything.”

“This baby’s going to change everything,” Vi said quietly staring at the ground.

“That’s the point,” Caitlyn smiled as she lifted her chin.

Vi didn’t smile back.

“That’s what scares me,” she murmured, “My whole life, I had to fight for even the little scraps I got. Nothing ever came easy. And I wanted Powder to have more than that… I tried… I really- tried… And I still failed her.”

She swallowed hard as more tears began to form in her eyes.

“I can’t fail this baby too. I won’t. Being here, with you- this is all happening so fast. I don’t know if I’m ready. I can’t lose you.”

“Violet,” Caitlyn said softly.

Vi looked at her.

“You have a good heart,” Caitlyn whispered, brushing her thumb gently along Vi’s cheek.

Vi’s eyes fluttered closed under her touch.

“A good heart doesn’t guarantee anything…”

“It guarantees one thing.”

Caitlyn took the sonogram from her hands, placing it on the nightstand. Slowly but surely, she lifted the hem of her shirt to reveal her small bump.

She took Vi’s hand which was trembling and guided it forward.

“Gods…” Vi said as she made contact.

“It guarantees they’ll grow up knowing what love feels like,” Caitlyn whispered.

Vi stared at her.

“How are you like this? You just… say things and everything slows down. You always know exactly what I need.”

Caitlyn let out a breath, unsteady.

“Because I love you.”

Vi dropped her head to Caitlyn’s shoulder, curling her arms around her.

“I’m sorry, I keep spiraling. I’m trying to be okay, I really am. But I can’t stop thinking about my past and… how it’s affecting my future.”

“You don’t have to be okay,” Caitlyn murmured into her hair. “You just have to be here. Let me hold some of it.”

Then Vi asked, quietly, “When you found out… I know it was the same day I got hit. What was it like? You haven’t… said.”

Caitlyn stilled.

“It was…” she breathed out, “It was beautiful. And terrifying. I was sitting in that cold little exam room and the doctor told me I was pregnant, and everything just… stopped.”

Vi lifted her head to look at her.

“I didn’t even know what to feel at first. Just that I had to get home. That I had to tell you, see your face, feel your arms around me.”

Caitlyn’s voice wavered. Her fingers tightened slightly on Vi’s.

“And then Mel knocked. And the world tilted on its axis.”

“She said there’d been an attack. That you were missing. Ambushed. That they didn’t know if you were alive…”

Caitlyn’s breath hitched sharply.

“I didn’t know what to feel.”

“Hey- ” Vi murmured.

“I was afraid you’d never know about them,” she said, barely holding herself together, “Afraid that this life we made… this gift- that I’d be left carrying it alone.”

“I’m so sorry. I should’ve been there. I should’ve come back sooner… I knew something was wrong when you had been sick for weeks… I should’ve stayed.”

“None of that,” Caitlyn said sternly.

Vi looked back surprised.

“We cannot change the past… but you came back. You’re here. You know them now… and they will know you. They’ll know their momma.”

Caitlyn squeezed Vi’s hand, which rested over her stomach.

Vi looked down, her thumb tracing gently over the curve beneath her palm.

“I would’ve died for you,” she whispered, “For both of you. Without even knowing they existed.”

She reached up and cradled Vi’s face with both hands, her thumbs brushing away the tears Vi didn’t even realize had fallen.

“No,” she said, “You’ll live for us.”
