Pearl’s been looking forward to this beach day for months. They drive away from the city in Athena’s car, windows down the whole way.
It was meant to be secluded, but it’s busier than either of them expected. Pearl had hoped to be back by nightfall, but that worry flies away in the spring breeze along with the hours. By the time they realize, everyone else is clearing out, and the sun is sinking below the horizon.
They sit in the surf together. They’re supposed to be watching the sunset, but Pearl can’t tear her eyes away from Athena’s face.
