Chapter 1: Caleb
Chapter Text
Caleb
He should have seen the signs sooner; they were all there. From the avoidance, poor mood, and general pre-teen angst, Caleb knew that his baby girl was going through something rough, but what, he didn’t know.
Ever since Abigail was born, she had been Caleb’s whole world. From the first sleepy blink of the lilac irises that they both shared, it was love at first sight. Caleb didn’t think he would love anyone as dearly as he did for his childhood sweetheart turned wife, but he was glad he was so wrong. His baby girl was everything and more. And now, at the tender pre-teen age of twelve, his daughter was locked in the bathroom, refusing to come out.
At first, he didn’t think much of it. Abby was at the age where she was figuring herself out and experimenting with different things. For one, she started to use minimum make up during outings. Nothing special, just the occasional lip gloss, more to follow her mother’s footsteps than anything else. It was both a wake-up call and sobering to know that his little girl was growing up. But now, it had been more than thirty minutes and Abby had yet to surface from the locked door.
Calm down, its nothing to get worried about , Caleb thought causally, trying to tamp down that something might be wrong. Gingerly, he knocked on the door, asking, “Abby? Everything okay in there?”
Silence, then a small whimper and a sniffle was heard.
Immediately Caleb was on high alert. His baby was somehow in pain, and he needed to do something, anything to make the pain go away. “Honey, what’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?” He knocked on the door a little harder, “can I come in?”
“NO!” Came a shout on the other side of the door. “I - I’m fine, just...... is mom back from her mission yet?”
Her mother? Sure, Abby was close with both of her parents, but everyone with eyes knew that the minute Abby was born, she was a daddy’s girl through and through. Anything Caleb did, Abby wanted in too. When she was younger, Abby would follow her father around like a lost puppy, copying anything he did. It was honestly cute and endearing how close the two were together. Anytime there was any trouble or tears from his little girl, daddy was there to sooth away the worries and pain. Now was no different.
“No, she’s still out. She’ll be back later in the evening....... Anything I can do, sweet pea? You know you can come to me for anything, right? Tell me what’s wrong so I can help make it better.”
“..........” there was more silence before a weak response was heard, “no thanks. I’ll wait till mom comes back.”
Panic encompassed the season military man like nothing had before. Was what was troubling Abby more serious than what he originally thought? what caused her so much distress that she only wanted her mother and not him?
He tried to reason with her, his worry growing, “Abby, that's not going to be for another few more hours. Are you planning on camping out in the bathroom for that time?”
“.........” more silence.
“Abby, honey, come on, please tell me what’s wrong. You're scaring me. Are you hurt?” Then his tone got harder, “........... did someone hurt you,” just the thought of that happened sent a protective paternal wave so strong, Caleb wanted to hunt down the unknown suspect and make them pay.
“No........ I just want to talk to mom.”
Now Caleb was getting desperate. “Abby, please come out and tell me what’s wrong? What do you need your mom for that you can’t tell me? I promise whatever it is I’ll support you and not get mad, just - I need to know you’re okay. Please,” he pleaded with the girl behind the door.
A moment passed, then another before the small creak of the door was cracked open and his baby girl peered at him tear-stained through the crack.
“Sweetheart?”
“I’m....... I'm bleeding.”
Alarm immediately went off in Caleb’s head. Bleeding?! Where? How did she get injured. The alarm and distress must have shown on his face because Abby continued in a quiet voice, “I'm okay. I promise. It’s just....... this is the first time I'm experiencing this........ I got scared and didn’t know how to react.”
Caleb tilted his head in confusion before a lightbulb went off in his head and his eyes widened in realization. “Abby........ did you get your first period?”
Hesitantly she nodded her confirmation.
Caleb was stunned dumb. Abby, his baby girl was now becoming a woman. The next big step to adulthood that all girls go through had finally happened to his little girl. Abby fidgeted through the crack in the door, unsure of how her father would react, but Caleb pulled together fast than he thought as he prepared to pamper his little girl in such a big moment.
After all, Caleb had plenty of experience handling a girl on her period. His practice stemmed from his wife who also had a similar reaction years ago when she had her first period. Caleb was a certified pro at this.
He immediately went into care mode, softening his voice and posture. “It must’ve been quite a shock, am I right?” Abby nodded. “Don’t worry sweat pea, it just means that you’re growing up, it’s perfectly normal. I’m sorry I'm not mom, but I’ll do the best to make you comfortable as I can, okay?” He smiled gently at his daughter trying to reassure her, “did you know that when your mom had her first period, I also helped her?” Abby perked up at this bit of news, “yeah. She was a bit in the dark about all this, so she thought something was wrong with her. Turns out it was all okay. Just like you.”
Pinked tinged the sweet dimples of her cheeks as she confessed embarrassingly, “I got blood on my underwear......”
“That’s fine, I’ll wash them. Do you need some pads and new underwear?” She nodded. “Okay, wait right here, I’ll go get them.”
Then Caleb was racing off to find the things she needed. He was back moments later with the promised items and handed them through the crack for his daughter. Receiving the items, she gave a weak smile before the door shut gently and Caleb waited patiently for her to change.
A minute or so later, Abby emerged from the bathroom, looking more relieved, but still miserable.
“How do you feel, baby?”
“Miserable...... and uncomfortable. My stomach aches a bit.”
“Yeah, that’ll be the cramps. Hold on. Go sit on the couch, let me grab some things.” Caleb once again darts off to go to the shared bedroom with his wife to get some of her supplies for his daughter. First, he got the heating pad his wife occasionally used when the cramps were bad, then he went down to the kitchen to make some apple tea that always made his wife feel better after drinking. Lastly, he grabbed a few bars of chocolate, a sweet treat for a miserable time, according to what his wife always said. With the items in hand, he makes his way to Abby and passes said items to her. “Here,” he sets up the heating pad, placing it on her lower tummy and puts it on high heat. Already, his daughter looks a little more comfortable as he hands her the steaming mug of tea and candy bars.
Abby looks at the chocolate with raised brows, “I thought you always said no snacks before dinner.”
Caleb gave her a little wink, “We can always make an exception, can’t we,” and the two share a smile. For the rest of the day, Caleb was at the beck and call of his little girl tending to every little need. Anything at all for his little princess.
By dinner time, Abby was once again in a better mood and even cracked a smile or two, easing the seasoned veteran's heart.
When Caleb’s wife returned home, she was greeted with love and a warm and inviting dinner sitting around her favorite people.
As the day came to an end and the couple rested against each other in bed, his wife turned to him and asked playfully, “Anything interesting happen while I was gone?”
“........ our little girl is growing up.”
She turned to him and gave him a puzzled look. Caleb then went on to explain what happened today and her face changed into one of understanding. “Oh, I still remember when I got my first period. It can really suck.” Then she laid a gently kiss on his brow, “you did so well daddy.”
“I just can’t believe that my little girl won't be so little anymore......... I’m feeling kind of sad at the thought.”
She chucked as she snuggled closer to him under the covers, “Oh, Caleb. You should know she’ll always be our baby. No matter how old she gets. And she’ll always be daddy’s little girl.”
Chapter 2: Zayne

Chapter Text
Zayne
Being as busy as he always was as the head of cardiology, Zayne found himself with a rare day off to spend with his family. Unfortunately, his wife got called last minute for an urgent mission with the association, so here he was, with his daughter, excited to spend the day as a father-daughter duo. Or that was what he was expecting. Instead, Jasmine had hastily ran to the bathroom and refused to come out for the last thirty minutes.
Zayne knew his daughter was a growing child, and anything from the littlest things like new acne could be seen as a big issue. He took it all in stride and went about packing for the picnic they had planned the day before.
But as the minutes ticked away, Jasmine had yet to come out.
Now, Zayne always prided himself as calm and collected, even experiencing the most strenuous situations, but he couldn’t help but feel anxious when his daughter had yet to appear from the confines of the bathroom.
He decided to go and check, “Jasmine,” he called as he knocked on the door, “we’re leaving soon. Is everything alright?”
There was silence on the other side as Zayne waited patiently. Then came a weak voice, “Dad........ I don’t think I can go to the picnic today........ I’m sorry.”
Zayne tilted his head in surprise. It was completely fine with him if his daughter didn’t want to go, but the way she sounded when she said it....... concern etched his features. “Darling, are you okay? It’s fine that we can’t go. Don’t worry about it. Are you feeling alright?”
“I’m.......I'm bleeding...... A lot.”
Alarm instantly coursed through the renowned doctor. Bleeding?! A lot?! When did she get injured? She might need medical intervention immediately. “Jasmine, are you hurt? Please open the door. Let me check you, please. How did you get injured? Where?” Came his rapid-fire questioning, his doctor instincts taking over.
The door cracked open and the flushed and embarrassed face of his daughter appeared. “Um, it’s okay. It’s not anything serious.”
Zayne proceeded to scan his beloved child for anything amiss, but she only appeared to be embarrassed and slightly uncomfortable. “Darling?”
“Um....... I’m pretty sure I just got it......” Zayne just stared at her, not getting it. She continued looking down, “I’m, uh, bleeding down there. You know, time of the month and all that....... like you taught me a while back.”
Stunned silence greeted the doctor as his daughter's words. She had just had her first period! While not wholly unexpected, given her age at the tender age of twelve years old, it still came to a surprise to the doctor. His little girl was growing up without him even noticing it.
A calm settled in him as he relaxed from his anxiety over her. This he could work with; he knew the insides and outsides of what a period was. He may have never experienced it before, but he was a doctor, the next best thing in feminine healthcare.
“How are you feeling? Do you need me to get you anything, darling?” His tone softened as he inquired for his daughter.
“I, uh, might have got some blood on my underwear......”
“That’s completely fine. This must have been unexpected for you.”
“I’ve been having cramps this whole morning. I thought it was because I ate a lot the night before........ guess I was wrong.” She tried to explain.
“Yes, bloating may occur when menstruation happens. Are there any other symptoms you are experiencing? How is your chest? Does It ache? Do you feel more tired than usual?"
Jasmine flushed scarlet at his inquiries, giving out an embarrassed “dad!”
“I’m sorry, honey. Just checking to see if there is anything I can do.” He apologized. “On a scale one to ten, how bad are the cramps? Do you think you need some mild painkillers?”
“........ No, it's uncomfortable, but not too bad. I think I just need to lie down for a bit. And yeah, I’m feeling kind of tired. Which sucks because I didn’t do anything today,” She sulked.
“Fatigue is also part of the experience, I'm afraid. Do you need any pads or new underwear?” He asks gently.
“Can you please get me some? Like I said before, I kind of ruined my current pair.”
Zayne nods, “wait a moment, please.” He proceeds to get the necessary items and returns only moments later asking, “do you need me to show you how to use these pads?”
“No, I got it. You showed me before and I remember it. I’m just going to go get changed now.”
“Ok, darling. Call me if you need anything.”
He then goes to the living room and proceeds to fluff the pillows and pull out his daughter’s favorite throw blanket. if they couldn’t go out for a picnic today, then they could rest and relax at home with ha well-loved movie and some snacks. Zayne went to the kitchen and retrieved his limited-edition chocolates he had been saving for an emergency, and this seemed like a very good cause today.
Satisfied with his little nest, he was about to ask for Jasmine when she came out of the bathroom with a weak smile. “What’s this you got there?”
“Just because we can’t go out doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves. Come,” he gestures to her to sit, “pick a movie, anything you want to watch.”
Jasmine looks to all the titles of her favorite comfort movies and settles on a classic animation that she had loved since she was young. As she settles herself to a more comfortable spot on the couch, Zayne casually offers her the chocolates which surprises her. “I know this is from your secret stash. Why are you bringing them out now? Doesn’t seem like much of an emergency?”
“Your health and comfort are always a priority for me, darling. I say this is a good time to enjoy something sweet when you aren’t feeling the best.”
The two share a secret smile and Jasmine lays her head on her father’s shoulder and snuggles closer to him. “......... Thanks dad. For supporting me and being there. You didn’t make me feel awkward or icky when this happened. I’ve heard some horror stories with my friends about their dads or brothers. I was a bit worried that I got my period when mom wasn't home.”
“Menstruation is a completely natural process that happens to half the world’s population. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I’m glad you feel comfortable coming to me for anything like this.”
She leans to fake whisper to him, “you know, I don’t feel so comfortable because you’re a doctor. It’s because you’re my dad, whom I love the most.”
A tender smile grows on the doctor's face, “and you’ll always be my beloved little girl.”
Chapter 3: Sylus
Chapter Text
Few knew the well-known criminal leader of Onychinus. Even fewer knew his weaknesses and could use it accordingly. But no one but the close handful of people he cared for knew his true weakness, his one and only baby girl. His Valerie.
The first time he had laid eyes on the little girl who was the spitting image of him, with ivory pale soft locks and ruby glittering eyes, he could only stare in awe and amazement that he had helped create such a beautiful treasure. For that was what she was. His greatest and proudest creation that he had made with the love of his life.
Nothing and no one could compare to his family, his beloved wife and adorable daughter.
Now, said adorable daughter was at the tender age of a pre-teen as was busy as usual, doing her own thing. Sylus thought nothing of it at first, as this was just his daughter finding her own way in life and exploring her options for the vast wide world.
Valerie was already proficient in multiple forms of martial arts, courtesy of her parents, was fluent in four languages (from her father), and of course, had excellent taste in fashion which she would love to showcase to her parents in little fashion shows Sylus honestly thought was cute. She did take after him after all.
So when Valerie was stuck inside the bathroom for a while, the Onychinus leader had thought she was busy preening in the mirror with whatever new outfit she had pleaded with him to get, and of course, he had given in with little to no resistance; But instead of hearing the tell-tale sounds of enthusiasm, all he heard was silence, then the deafening sounds of a sob.
He was on that door in a second flat, knocking politely to know what was wrong with his baby girl. “Val? Are you okay, sweetie?”
“...............” all that greeted his question was silence.
Now, Sylus and his baby girl had a very good and close relationship together ever since she was born. Not only was Valerie his beloved daughter, but she was also his protege and heir to his empire. He taught her everything that she needed to know to tackle the cruel world, so that when she was old enough, she could not only survive but thrive. And little Valerie loved her father to bits. She wanted to be just like him when she grew up, much to her mother's consternation and father’s amusement. Valerie not only shared her desires with him, but her fears, hopes and dreams. She had never refused to tell her daddy what was wrong....... until today.
“Val?” He knocked again on the door harder this time.
“Leave me alone!” A muffled shout was heard. Sylus paused. This was new. Valerie sure had her tantrums, especially when she was younger, but she never outright yelled at him like that.
This won't do Sylus thought in worry. His daughter was acting out, and he wasn't sure what was the cause. Normally, if something like this happened, he would have given her the space she wanted, but that tiny sob he had heard through the door. That sound haunted him. His baby girl was suffering, and he needed to know what or who did it so he could deal with it accordingly.
“Valerie, I’m coming in,” he said with a stern voice.
“No! Don’t come in here.......please......daddy....” she pleaded.
Now his worry intensified. What could have happened to her to sound so defeated. “Val....... please tell me what's wrong. Are you hurt? Did something happen?”
“......... I'm bleeding.”
Alarm flashed across the Onychinus leader’s face as he digested what his daughter had told him. Bleeding? Was it serious?
“Val, I need to come in now. If you're hurt, I need to -”
“No, no, please. That be too embarrassing.”
“.........embarrassing?” What was so embarrassing about bleeding. His baby could be seriously hurt, and she was worried about it being embarrassing – oh. Oh. S weetie, are you having your first period?” Sylus asks gently.
Another moment of silence greets the man before the door swings open a gap and instead of the teary face of a distraught pre-teen, it is one of fury and anger. “Yeah! It totally sucks. There’s blood everywhere, my stomachs aches, and I want chocolate!”
At her defiance and anger of the situation, instead of distress, so like her mother, Sylus smirked in amusement. "That so?”
She continued to ramble on, “I mean I knew I would get it sooner or later, but you know what, it sucks! Being a woman sucks. Daddy, tell me there’s a way to get rid of it, please. Knowing I must deal with this the rest of my life is so urrhhggg!”
“I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do, darling. It's just a fact of life. Sometimes you’ll encounter things you have to deal with that are less than stellar but must go through with.” she pouted. “How about this, let’s get you cleaned up, then we can have the chefs cook your favorite lava cake, yes the one you only get on special occasions, and then you can unload all the unjust tragic burdens of being a woman to me while you enjoy your treat, deal?”
“.........deal. Daddy?”
“Hmm? Yes, sweetie?”
“Thanks for putting up with my nonsense....... and I love you.”
“it’s not nonsense. I admit, woman have some things much harder than men and they should be applauded and cherished for all the hardships they have to go through. Just know, I may not deal with something like this, but it doesn't ever mean you are alone........ and I love you too.” Sylus patted his daughter on the head, “now, come on, get cleaned up and I’ll meet you downstairs with that cake.”
“With salted caramel ice cream,” Valerie asks hopefully.
“Sure, with any ice cream you want.”
Notes:
I love how I think Sylus’ daughter would be all fire and fury instead of crying alone in the bathroom. you think those are scared tears? Hell no! Those are tears of fury!
Please leave a comment or kudos and let me know what you guys think!
Chapter 4: Rafayel
Notes:
I must admit, I had a blast writing Raf’s version of this! The sass and dramatics! He’s not my main, but doesn’t mean I don’t love him!
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Rafayel thought that his life was complete with the marriage to his beloved bride, but that was not true. It was the birth of his darling daughter that sealed the deal and made him love, not one precious girl, but two; his lovely wife and tiny daughter. Even before the birth of his child, he was a nervous but excited wreck. From stupendous baby shopping sprees to fanatic bouts of inspiration for decorating the baby’s room, he was invested, full throttle. Nothing could stop the pure glee and joy of preparing for the most precious of treasures that he and the love of his life made.
And she was beautiful, his Serenity, also affectionately known as Riri. Much to his amusement, smugness, and a little bit of sadness, his daughter took after him...... a bit too much. Not only did she have his lavender curly locks and pearl-like eyes, but his sporadic and exuberant love of the arts as well as his sass. After experiencing Riri’s exaggerated pouting and whining, he finally understood what a drama queen he could be at times, not that he would ever admit it to his wife. Most of all, Riri was half him and his wife, so naturally, as part Lumerian, she loved long baths and soaks in the water.
So, it was one sunny morning that Rafayel thought nothing much at first when he heard his daughter in the bathroom, faint noises heard from the closed door. It wasn’t unusual for Riri to soak when she had free time, and on a splendid weekend morning like today was no different. After all, Riri was now a preteen who was starting to flourish into herself. With Rafayel’s love for beauty and splendor, he would even encourage her to try new things like fashion and cosmetics. She was probably in there now trying out the new facial he had recommended to her and his wife.
With not a thought more, Rafayel proceeded to go about is day. He was in the middle of thinking if he should start that new painting he was meaning to, with Thomas breathing down his neck to submit a new piece soon. As he turned to head to his studio is when he heard it. The soft sob behind the bathroom door.
Immediately he was on high alert. Sigh of contentment or whines of annoyance were common with his daughter, but to hear her cry? To hear her sob?
No. Something was wrong.
the paternal instinct in him to care reared its head with vicious force. He went to the door and knocked softly called out to her, “Riri, everything okay in there?”
he waited a beat, then another before a moan of anguish resounded from the other side of the door. “Nooooo, da – daddy, there’s something I - I need to tell you.......”
Worry began to gnaw at the confused father as he gently tried to coax out his daughter. “Riri? What’s wrong baby? Come out, guppy. Let me see what’s wrong”. Another loud thud was heard in the bathroom as the door finally creaked open a sliver for the tear-stained face of Riri to emerge. One look at his miserable daughter had his instincts on high alert. Whatever it was that was bothering his beloved daughter, he would try to fix it. “Hey, guppy, what’s wrong? You can tell me.”
With tears streaming down her face, Riri peered up at her father as her lips wobbled out, “I love you.”
Growing even more worried and concerned, Rafayel cocked his head to the side in confusion, his brow furrowing. “I love you too, guppy....... what’s this all about, huh?”
Riri worried her bottom him between her teeth before glancing up at her father again, “I don’t have much time left....... I just wanted you to know.”
“........ much time for what?” He asked, still confused.
“Left to live!” She wailed. “If I’m going to die, then I’ll make sure I’ll leave my mark! I - I wish I could say goodbye to mom too, but she’s out right now and - and..........”
At her words, alarm crossed Rafayel’s face as he grabbed hold of the door Riri was clutching like a lifeline and yanking it open to see more of her. Frantically scanning her head to toe, he didn’t find anything amiss, but that didn’t rule out what she was saying as a possibility. “What happened?! What’s wrong?! Are you sick?! What do you mean you’re dying?!” Came his frantic barrage of questions.
Gulping another deep breath, Riri whispered out, as if saying out loud would give it more truth, “I’m bleeding........ and it won’t stop! My stomach's killing me, and I feel ready to die.” She stared up into him, eyes so similar to his own, “I haven’t been in this world long, and I wish I had more time but -”
He interrupted her spiel, “bleeding? Where?” He gave her another once over and didn’t see any evidence of what she said.
A deep flush set in her cheeks as she looked to the floor, then pointed down, “down there......”
“..........”
“..........”
The realization hit him like a sledgehammer. His little girl was growing up! She was now a woman. Relief and no small amount of amusement filled the man. “Guppy, look at me.”
She hesitantly did as she was told as he knelt to be on eye-level with his daughter. “You aren’t dying. And the fact that you’re bleeding..... well, it just means you’re growing up. Remember the talk we had with you and your mother about the birds and the bees?” She nodded, “and remember about the reproductive cycles men and women go through when they reach your age?” She nodded again, “yeah, honey, you aren’t dying. You just got your period is all. In about three to six days the bleeding will stop, and you’ll be fine.”
A smile so bright lit up his baby girl’s face that Rafayel couldn’t help but reciprocate back to her, “Oh! Thank God! I really didn’t expect to get this! I thought being half lemurian and all, well, that I wouldn’t get this type of human thing.”
“Well, you are half human....”
Not listening she continues, “oh, what a relief, I’m just glad I'm really not dying. Now, all I have to do it endure this for a few more days and I'll never have to experience such a thing again!”
At the end of her sentence Rafayel froze. Then turned to eye his daughter who was laughing quietly to herself. “Um......Guppy, what do you mean by that?”
“Huh?”
“Huh?”
The two looked at each other before Riri spoke, “well, once this is done, means I'm a woman, right?” He nodded, “so this is just like a rite of passage and then I'll be done for good.”
Rafayel bit his lip in preparation of what he was about to tell her, “wellll.......... that’s not...... entirely true, guppy.” She gave him a puzzled look, “you see, once you get your first period, you’ll....... keep getting it till you are older........ much older.”
Her eyes widened, “Wait, this will happen again?”
He nodded slowly, “every month.”
“............”
“...........”
“Oh, I see,” she said with a worrying amount of calm. She turned to her father, “so it is my fate to suffer in this life, I see....”
“Wait, that’s not how -”
“I guess I ’ll just wither away as my blood runs dry and body weakens.”
“Guppy, wait -”
“Goodbye cruel world, there must be something I did I'm my past life to endure such hardships.”
Rafayel huffed at her dramatics. Damn, they really were eerily similar. “Why don’t I call your mother to come back early and we can discuss the specific if you have any questions.”
“Oh no, daddy, I’ll just waste away in here....”
Rafayel huffed in amusement again, “okay, waste away if that's what you want. But if you want, I can cook us some prawn paste chicken wings to make you feel better. You want that?”
Riri paused in her lamenting and eyes her father, “the extra crispy ones with the siracha mayonnaise sauce?”
“The very one, you coming or what?”
The bathroom door slammed closed before several noises of her rustling and getting ready could be heard, “just a minute! Let me clean up!”
“Okay, okay. We’re in no rush. Take your time.”
“Chicken wings! Chicken wings!” he heard her chant happily, anguish completely forgotten. He smiled to himself, just another hectic day at home. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Chapter 5: Xavier
Notes:
This is the final LADS boy, Xavier!
Chapter Text
Xavier rubbed his eyes drowsily as he blinked a few times to properly wake up. He yawned once more from a well-deserved midday nap. Ever since getting married and having his beautiful little girl, naps he once enjoyed were few and far between. Not that he was complaining. He wouldn’t trade anything in the world for the wonderful family that had been gifted to him. Sure, when he was exhausted from a long mission at the association he would like to sleep in a bit more, but nothing compared to the sweet smile of his little girl when he arrived home after a long day.
Xavier checked the side of the table for the time on the digital clock. It was just three minutes passed three o’clock in the afternoon. Perfect. He had enough time to get ready before his daughter arrived home from school. Getting to his feet, Xavier stretched, feeling the pop and stretch of his joints before meandering down the hall to the kitchen to make a fresh batch of coffee. Today was one of the rare few days off for him. Unfortunately, his wife was still at work, leaving it to him to care for their now pre-teen daughter until she came home.
Xavier took fatherhood very seriously. When his little Sapphire was born, also known as Sapphie, he spent countless hours scouring books on daycare, infant development, and of course, changes to the human body, for his beloved wife (he would never leave her care out). Out of all his years in solitary, he now had not one, but two precious beings filling his life with love and so much more. It was only right he spend all his efforts trying to care for them to the best of his abilities. So, he thought he was mostly prepared for any curve balls life threw at him when it came to taking care of his daughter.
Such was not the case.
Before he could even take a sip from the hot warmth of the coffee in his favorite mug, a loud bang was heard in the front door, followed by feet rushing across the hall to another slam of the bathroom door.
Xavier blinked once in surprise as he craned his neck to peer at the abrupt entrance of his daughter.
“.....Sapphie?” He called out once. Nothing. No usual greeting or grumping of a tough day at school. Not even the exaggerated yawn that was so like his own when his daughter would loudly announce she was going to take a well-deserved nap what she deemed, a long day. Xavier put his mug down and walked the path his daughter took, looking around curiously for her. “Sapphie? Everything okay?”
Still there was nothing. It was pure silence in the bathroom.
At first, he didn’t think much on it, as girls her age were bound to be a little dramatic, but when a soft whine and shaky exhale sounded through the bathroom door, Xavier was on high alert.
He knocked on the door gently, calling out to her again, “Sapphie? Did..... did something happen in school? Do you need help?”
“......... just..... leave me alone, dad,” came the despondent voice of his daughter.
Xavier’s mind raced at what might have happened.
Was she possibly being bullied?! Sure, his daughter tended to be on the quieter side, but she had her fair share of friends and acquaintances. Sapphire gone along well with everyone. It didn’t seem to be that. Then what?
Xavier racked his mind to how a pre-teen girl would act in certain scenarios, but he still felt clueless.
Well, there was one way to solve this puzzle.
“Sapphie, can you come out please?” he called out softly. There was shuffling heard behind the door but no response. He knocked and called out again, “do...... do I need to kill someone?”
The door immediately opened at the annoyed and bewildered expression on his daughter face. She eyed his and she huffed out, “dad, I’m fine. Why would you need to kill anyone, anyways?”
“In case whatever you are feeling now is caused by them,” he said lightly, a bit in jest, but also completely serious. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family.
Sapphire ran an agitated hand through her silver locks as her bright blue eyes sullenly glared at her father, “not funny, dad. I’m really okay......... I just had an.......embarrassing moment today. I’m processing.”
Xavier tilted his head to the side, registering his daughter’s words. “Embarrassing?”
She sighed loudly as she looked down to the floor, her cheeks reddening as she quietly mumbled something out.
“Sorry, I didn’t get that.”
“I said I got my period in the middle of class today!” She then shouted as Xavier’s eyes widened in surprise.
Oh gods! It finally happened........ my baby girl is growing up he thought with some disappointment. It was a fact of life, but he always hoped his little girl would stay little for a while longer.
Hearing the news, Xavier straightened up and asked quietly, “Do you....... need anything? This is a big step for a woman growing up. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s completely natural,” he tried to soothe.
Her blue eyes glared at him, “I know that! Why I’m like this is nothing to do with me getting my period and everything to do with getting it in the middle of P.E class. I didn’t even notice that I stained my shorts until one of the boys, a boy! Took notice and pointed it out....... to the whole class,” then softly she whispered, “it was mortifying.”
Xavier mentally took note to speak with said boy at a later date as she comforted his daughter, “Sapphie, I wish things like this didn’t happen, but it’s going to be okay. I know you feel embarrassed, but right now my main concern is that you are feeling alright.” He knew from experience with helping his wife that some periods tended to be harder on others, so he was worried about that.
Sapphire paused in her sulking to assess herself, “....... I feel a bit tired.” Xavier nodded in understanding, “and I feel a little bloated.”
“All completely normal. How’s the cramps? Are there any? Is it painful?”
“Not really, it just feels really uncomfortable.”
“Okay,” his mind flew at all the instances he took care of his wife when she was experiencing her periods and all the books, he read to help her with it and now used it on his daughter. “Here’s what we can do. I’ll brew you some tea that helps with bloating and nausea that your mother uses. I’ll also turn on the AC and close the curtains, so take a nap to feel better, yeah?”
Sapphire smiled a bit at that, “sure, sounds good.” He smiled back at her and turned around to prepare when she called out to him. He peered over his shoulder in question, “thanks for not making this awkward and all.”
“Anything for you, Starlight. Come out when you’re ready, and we can take a nap together.”
