Grian was not a morning person. He was even less of a morning person when he had to start work at 9 on a Saturday morning. To make it worse; he’d forgotten he’d been rostered on to train a newbie this morning.
“Grian, this is Jimmy. Jimmy, this is Grian, he’ll be running you through your training this morning,” Xisuma announces, and Grian has to fight the urge to roll his eyes, especially when ‘Timmy’ or whatever the kids name was gave him a nervous wave and awkward smile.
As Xisuma wandered off to go do his own job, Grian looks down at the checklist of tasks that he has to train the new guy to do and lets out a quiet groan, running a hand through his hair.
“Alright Timmy. You’re doing front area right?”
“Ye-“ Grian doesn’t wait for Jimmy to respond, instead he continues to talk, doing his best to put on a smile, hoping it may just help to the shift and training to finish faster.
“Alright I’ll show you how to put down hashbrowns and fries. It’s breakfast at the moment, so you won’t have to worry about fries unless someone actually orders them. Hash, however, you’ll have to make sure you have enough down to keep up.”
As Grian runs Jimmy through the rest of the instructions for how to use the fry hopper and how to bag the hashbrowns, a head of bright blonde, almost yellow hair, catches Jimmy’s eye, and he finds himself no longer focusing on Grian’s words.
“..you got that all, Tim?”
“Huh? Uh yeah. I do.”
“Good, you’re doing that for a while. I’ll just be over here helping make coffees for cafe.”

“I hate training so much Cleo. It’s so boring,” Grian whines, his head buried in his hands and he leans against the counter.
“Joel’s here now. Go bother him, and stop being a pest over here. If you want to whinge, go do it to X.”
“But I feel bad bothering X.”
“Yet you don’t have a problem bothering me. Now shoo.” Cleo waves him away, and though their words were harsh, Grian knows they are, for the most part, only teasing.
Grian wanders back towards the kitchen, spotting Joel having just clocked in. He can see his friends' eyes searching for someone before his eyes land on Grian.
“Blumin hell, is Lizzie not on today?” Joel asks, Grian shakes his head. “I changed my availability’s for nothing,” Joel complains, slumping his shoulders a little in defeat before perking back up.
“New guy?” Joel questions, motioning his head in Jimmy’s direction.
“Unfortunately. X put me on to train him and I completely forgot til I clocked on this morning. Like I already didn’t want to be here X, you don’t have to make my life worse.” Joel chuckles a little at Grian’s annoyance.
“What if we locked him in the freezer? Go ask him to get some more hash or something. I saw the screwdriver on the desk when I walked in, so clearly someone forgot to put it away.”
“You are fucking brilliant. I’ll chuck a jacket in there and then ask him to go grab a box out.”

Joel and Grian stand at the desk, looking into the cupboard of screens displaying the cameras.
“He’s been in there, what, like at least 20 minutes now?”
“Yeah, but you know Joel, I kinda feel like a bad boy right now,” Grian snickers, making reference to an inside joke between the two.
“Oh but Grian look at him.. he might be a bit mad, boy.” Joel states with a smirk.
“Looks more like he’s a sad boy.” Grian and Joel lean against each other dissolving into a fit of giggles, the door to the cupboard still open and unaware of the person now standing behind them.
“Should I be worried about why two of my staff members are looking at the cameras and giggling to themselves?” Xisuma inquires.
Grian does his best to close the cupboard quickly without it slamming only leading to the two boys being further incriminated.
“I already saw. Go let him out. You are both to go apologise. Grian you will finish training him today, Cleo will be watching you like a hawk. Be glad I’m not writing either of you up today, however, when you enviably do this again, because I know what you two are like, you will both be written up, and you will both be retrained. Got it?”

Grian hated the feeling of being watched. He knew exactly where the feeling was coming from, and in a sense it was both better and worse. After the freezer incident, and an half hearted apology to Jimmy, training had resumed, and well in all honesty Grian was bored. He’d been checking the monitors every 5 seconds for the time with the hope that it would finally be the end of his shift. He still had atleast an hour left if he was lucky. If X or Cleo asked him to stay back though, then who knew how long.
In his best efforts to cure his boredom, Grian had elected to teaching Jimmy to do everything that would end up with the same result as it normally would, but with the most inefficient way. The easiest ones in that sense was teaching him to have entire conversations with customers who clearly wanted to be quick in and out, and that he had to press additional buttons on the till to get to the same menu item that would have been found with only one button pressed.
