Work Text:
The letter had come from Wright Anything Agency. Franziska turned the envelope around in her hand as she sipped her morning coffee, returning to her desk. She had been back in the country for less than a week. She had seen Miles and Trucy.
Yet Trucy was a good girl. She was the sort to send official invitations even when it might be more efficient to simply send a text. Franziska did not expect any professional mail from Phoenix Wright, because the man was simply useless when it came to such things. She ripped open the top and slid the stationary out.
Definitely nothing official. The stationary was pink with kittens. The problem with that is Franziska did not remember Trucy having such stationary.
But she did remember Maya having it. Trucy could have used it then.
Dear Chief Prosecutor Franziska von Karma,
I’m sending this letter because I’m madly in love with you and I didn’t know how to tell you in person. I practiced so many times and yet I’m still not sure I could do it in person.
I don’t want to be a coward. You deserve better! So I’m still going to confess when I see you in person next, but if we both know what’s coming it should be easier!
If you don’t want me to, that’s okay. You mean a lot to me in any way you want me to be in your life. I’m not worried about you running away. We’re both adults.
I love you.
Franziska raised both eyebrows. Okay. It still could be Trucy. Trucy had been all in on setting people up since her stupid brother and Phoenix Wright had finally gotten over their hang ups. Speaking of being adults but not being adults. It was one of the many ways Franziska had to say Pearl wasn’t the best influence on Trucy. They got into so much mischief.
So Trucy and Pearl could be wanting to do the same for her and Maya. It wasn’t like the idea hadn’t been on Franziska’s mind for some time. How could it not? Even when she was not in the country she spent so much time on the phone with her. It could have simply been having a friend, but while it had taken Franziska a while to get used to that concept, she could also tell there was a difference. By this point?
What if it was Maya? It was Maya’s handwriting, not Trucy’s, but Franziska would have to scan it further to make sure it wasn’t either of the girls’ copying Maya’s script. Pearl was very familiar with it and Trucy was the mistress of magic.
No. She was overthinking this. It was from Maya. If Trucy or Pearl had been trying to set this up, they would have signed it. There was no Maya Fey written at the end of the letter. Even if the rest of it had made it extremely obvious who it was from.
Maya would be the sort to think it would be too obvious if she sent a letter from Kurain village only to send it from her best friend’s office. Franziska smirked.
Either way, she appreciated the push. It was certainly about time.
Yes, it had been written by Maya Fey. Franziska could tell from the moment Maya greeted her near the food stands. Franziska knew Maya did her best thinking when she was eating or had a full stomach, but also did not believe this was the sort of conversation to have within a restaurant. Taking lunch from a stall that they could walk with would be best.
Franziska had not thought she would ever know someone so well except for a handful of people within the law. It was thanks to Maya she knew more than that. Perhaps thanks to Phoenix Wright as well and her brother, but…
If it were only those two, Franziska definitely wouldn’t have come this far outside of her profession. No, it was definitely thanks to Maya.
“Hey, Franny!”
“Maya Fey.” Franziska did her best to keep her cool. There was nothing to be nervous about, of course. She already knew Maya’s feelings, so there was nothing unknown about this. Nothing for her to determine. Simply feelings to return.
Maya hooked her arm with Franziska’s. “What are you wanting to eat?”
It could not be Franziska’s imagination—Maya’s pulse was racing too. “Shall we go to Yamato’s Burgers?”
“Ooo! I’ve been craving those. Sounds good to me!”
By the time they each had a burger in hand, Franziska could feel the eyes on her back. Maya took a large bite of hers, somehow still hungry despite all of the nerves she must have been feeling. Franziska took a much smaller bite, knowing her appetite would return after they had discussed the issue at hand.
But who was watching? She glanced back over her shoulder.
Maybe chuckled through a full mouth, making sure to chew thoroughly before she swallowed. “Yeah, I think I had some tag alongs. Sorry.”
No doubt it was Trucy and Pearl. Franziska could just imagine Maya having written the letter in the Wright Anything Agency with the two girls behind her. Pearl would say something, Maya would get flustered and forget to sign her name at the bottom as she folded it up and stuffed it into the nearest envelope. One Trucy likely handed to her.
“It seems like they are aware of something as well.”
Maya flushed, but instead of taking another bite of her hamburger, she actually took a napkin out of her bag and wiped her mouth. “Yeah. About that… Franny…”
“You were waiting for my answer, were you not?”
There was no reason for her heart to race, except for how she looked into Maya’s eyes and saw the same anticipation there.
“You are the strongest woman I know,” Franziska said. “How could I not fall for you too?”
Maya’s face broke out into the widest grin. She opened her mouth to say something, then a look of surprise surfaced.
Franziska did not like that.
“Too?” Maya asked, dumbfounded.
Of all the things for her to question… “Of course. I fail to see the issue in my choice of words?”
Maya’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. If Franziska’s heart wasn’t racing before, it was now. Except Maya had looked so happy, so it wasn’t a case of Franziska misreading the situation. Was it?
“Pearly! Trucy!”
Franziska turned in the direction Maya was shouting and toward Trucy’s laughter. Pearl looked about ready to prostrate herself in apology, but Trucy dragged her friend away.
The option Franziska had first considered came back to her. “You did not write me a letter, did you?”
“And you probably didn’t write this one!” Maya pulled a paper from her kimono sleeve. It looked like regular office printer paper. As if Franziska had typed it out. Franziska wondered if she were to send a love letter whether she would have chosen to type it out and realized she had no idea if she would or not.
Except she hadn’t, of course.
Suddenly, Franziska was hungry. And annoyed. She took a larger bite out of her hamburger before she said something unkind about the two girls who had run off. Maya started to laugh, hooking her arm in Franziska’s again.
“I should have known. It was timed too well. I just thought Trucy might have pestered you about it or something and then you sent it to me.”
A part of Franziska was curious as to what Trucy and Pearl thought Franziska would write in such a letter, but the rest of her didn’t want to be involved in that sort of foolishness. Franziska swallowed. “There were many other ways they could have gone about such things,” she replied stiffly.
Then Maya kissed her. On the cheek. On a public road by the park. Franziska blinked.
“The outcome was worth it, right?”
Franziska wanted to say the ends didn’t always justify the means, but it occurred to her in this particular case, it was okay. “I would like to write you an actual confession, Maya Fey.”
Maya beamed again, the flush returning to her cheeks. “Yeah? I’d like that. I’d keep that letter. I’ll… I’ll write you one too!”
Perhaps it wasn’t the order such events usually went in, but Franziska had long since decided traditional orders weren’t always needed. Sometimes it could just be like this: her and Maya promising to write each other love confessions after confessing.
And if they made a habit of writing each other love letters?
Well, Franziska wouldn’t be good at it the first time. She could strive for perfection in this. Because with every letter, Maya looked at her with an adoration which could move continents.
