Chapter Text
“What’s that, Kara?”
Alice widened her eyes in wonder at the strange contraption trundling up the hill.
“A carriage,” Kara answered gently. “People used to ride them in the past, before cars.”
“It’s beautiful,” the child android said longingly as the carriage passed.
Luther took Alice’s hand and pointed. “We can hire one to go around the hill at the booth there.”
Kara hesitated. What if the staff found out they were androids? What if it wasn’t safe? What if--
“Please, Kara?”
The AX400 sighed. After all they’d been through, a carriage ride was the least Alice deserved.
“Let’s go.”

Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Gavin Reed had the shock of his life walking into a white plastimetal figure quietly sitting on the bench, sipping thirium like it was a damn orange juice.
For a second he thought he had met a faceless ghost until realization hit.
“The fuck-- Connor??”
“Took you long enough.”
“Never seen you like this before. Tired of your goofy face?”
Silence. Unusual. Connor had turned away, as if to hide.
Gavin felt bad despite himself.
“...Tina said thanks. She’s sorry you got injured shielding her.”
Connor turned back, synthetic skin slowly returning, revealing a faint smile.
“Just doing my job.”

Chapter Text
Markus walked into the newly renovated Bellini Paints.
Beside him was North, looking at the splashes of colors with awe.
“Carl always gets his paints here,” Markus said. “I’m just glad it’s still standing.”
North took Markus’ hand, smiling softly.
He returned the smile, quietly savoring the moment.
“I saw it in your memories. You painting together.”
She gazed thoughtfully at one of the painter’s creations, depicting a human and an android.
“You taught me not to give up hope, Markus. Guess I owe Carl one for teaching you that.”
Markus squeezed her hand. “He’d be glad to hear that.”

Chapter 4: Quarter | Connor, Hank Anderson

Chapter Text
“You’re playing with that thing again huh, Connor?”
The quarter coin danced across the android’s fingers. By now, Hank had tolerated it.
Not that he had much choice, as Connor always found a new coin every time Hank confiscated one.
“This is good for calibrating my processors,” Connor replied.
Hank raised an eyebrow.
“...And it’s fun,” Connor admitted.
The lieutenant chuckled and, to Connor’s surprise, brought out an identical coin, flicking it in a smooth pattern.
Albeit not as complex as Connor’s, it was not bad.
“Even old dogs can learn new tricks, Connor,” Hank said, flashing a proud grin.

Chapter 5: Cold | Connor, Hank Anderson
Summary:
Day 5 Prompt: Cold
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Connor hated the cold.
Every time the temperature dropped enough for snow to fall heavier than a soft flurry, he grew anxious.
How inconvenient, he thought. Connor had been pleased to fully accept most emotions since embracing deviancy… except fear.
One day, he found a neatly folded winter jacket on his desk.
“Wear it, kid,” Hank gruffed from the neighboring desk. “I know you don’t feel cold, but you look like you need something.”
“...Thank you, Hank.”
Connor hated the cold. But now, he could feel a quiet comfort every time he pulled the winter jacket tighter around his body.

Chapter 6: Comedy | Josh, Markus, Chloe, Elijah Kamski
Chapter Text
“O’er better waves to speed her rapid course
The light bark of my genius lifts the sail,
Well pleas’d to leave so cruel sea behind;
And of that second region will I sing,”
Markus and Josh stared.
“I thought we were here to discuss public policy?” Josh asked through the direct neural link.
“That was the intention,” replied Markus.
“Then why are we listening to Elijah Kamski reciting lines from The Divine Comedy??”
“I’m sorry,” Chloe joined in, “Elijah’s on his second bottle of Romanée-Conti. Rough week.”
Josh facepalmed. Markus chuckled.
Never knew that the inventor was a poetic drunk.

Chapter 7: Lotion | Gavin Reed, Connor
Chapter Text
The crime scene was horrific. Red and blue blood splattered across the room, creating macabre patterns.
Whoever did this must’ve been someone very sick in the head. Bodies arranged deliberately, as if being displayed in an art installation. Blood on the wall formed a message.
Gavin stepped closer to examine the wall. It was too late when he slipped on a layer of colorless oil.
Unfortunately, his right hand landed in a mysterious white goo.
Gavin froze.
“…Please tell me this is lotion.”
Connor scanned the questionable liquid.
“…”
“I’m talking to you, asshole.”
“Well… I have bad news.”
“FUCK!”

Chapter 8: Stars | Captain Allen, Sixty
Chapter Text
“Would you look at that,” Allen gaped at the stars, something rare under Detroit’s light-polluted skies.
His unit was deployed a few miles out of town, only for it to be called off. Bad intel.
Sixty smirked. “The great SWAT captain is dumbfounded by the sky?”
“Not just the sky,” he said, pointing. “Deneb, Albireo.”
Sixty’s eyes followed.
“Sadr, Aljanah, Fawaris. The Northern Cross.”
The android’s LED blinked. “How will knowing asterisms help with missions?”
“It’s not protocol,” Allen grinned, “but it helps you bond with your grumpy android rookie.”
Sixty scoffed, yet quietly logged it as a core memory.

Chapter 9: Enjoy | Connor, Markus, Simon
Chapter Text
The aftermath of the peaceful revolution was by no means peaceful for Connor, who had worked his processors to maximum capacity.
If he were human, he would’ve collapsed weeks ago.
“Do you know the game ‘Simon Says’, Connor?” Markus asked.
“Excuse me?”
“When Simon says something, we follow. That’s the rule here. Now Simon, what did you want to say?”
Simon walked in, holding android treats and tea.
“It’s rest time.”
“But the android hate crimes report--”
“You’re allowed to enjoy yourself too. Taking breaks is part of the mission.”
Markus nodded. “Simon says rest, Connor.”
And rest he did.

Chapter 10: Serenade | Gavin Reed, Chris Miller, Connor
Chapter Text
The breakroom was unexpectedly filled with the sound of acoustic guitar.
It was an old guitar, donated by the owner following its release from evidence. Gavin and Chris decided to put it in the breakroom, with Captain Fowler’s unenthusiastic approval, for anyone to use.
Gavin’s fingers danced on the strings, gentle phrases flowing through the room.
♪ Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
Connor observed Gavin’s skillful playing with a curious glance, until the latter noticed and scowled.
“What do you want, tin can?”
“Nothing. Just admiring you.”
Gavin choked.
“You gonna serenade him, Gav?” Chris snickered.
“In your dreams, smartass.”

I've seen some people use "David/Dave" for Cpt. Allen's first name, so I'll use that too. Hello Cpt. Dave Allen of Detroit Police SWAT Unit 32. :)
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
It was a pleasant debriefing following the successful raid. Captain Allen summarized SWAT’s tactical approach.
“--And we cleared the warehouse faster than expected,” he concluded.
Hank smiled slightly. “Told you the boys’ layout was trustworthy, Dave.”
Allen grinned. “Credit where it’s due, Hank.”
They spoke with the ease of old teammates, which caught Connor’s attention.
He asked Hank about it that evening. “Have you worked with Captain Allen before?”
Hank shrugged. “Best rookie I ever had. Would’ve made one hell of a detective, but SWAT needed his talents.”
Connor nodded, wondering if he could earn that kind of praise someday.

“The scones are ready, Hank.” Connor beamed, proud of his first home-cooked pastry.
Markus, who was visiting, observed. “Looking good.”
Hank took a bite. Then immediately choked and grabbed a glass of water.
“What the hell’s in this???” he wheezed.
Connor was confused. “I followed the recipe exactly.”
“Show me,” Markus said, extending his hand to interface.
His eyes widened with an amused glint.
“Connor, you downloaded a prank recipe. A scone shouldn’t contain Marmite and vinegar.”
Connor grimaced, embarrassed. “The title says ‘anti-fail healthy scones’…”
Hank took another big gulp. “Yeah, it didn’t fail to assault my tastebuds alright.”

Chapter 13: Abundance | Captain Fowler, Gavin Reed, Connor
Chapter Text
Captain Fowler glared at the two detectives.
“I’ve been getting an abundance of damage complaints. An old lady said you destroyed her hydrangeas.”
“Necessary force, Cap. Gave the flowers more action than the rest of the block.”
Gavin laughed at his own joke, met with Fowler’s icy stare.
“I agree. Not the flowers part,” Connor glowered. “The suspect did lead us there. But for the record, Detective Reed decided to cut through her lawn despite my alternative proposal.”
“Your big-ass foot trampled her flowers too, prick.”
“ENOUGH!” Fowler barked. “Get out of my office and fix this!”
They scampered off.

The same dream.
Condolences. Eulogies. All that saccharine bullshit.
Nothing would bring his son back.
Hank knew what was next. A dark well would appear, drowning him.
Then he’d wake up, dreadful. Time for Russian Roulette.
But something’s different.
A light.
“…Hank?”
A voice. Desperate.
“…Wake up.”
A hand, reaching out.
SLAP!
“Wake up, Hank!”
He jolted, scowling at Connor.
“Jesus, kid,” he muttered, “that’s not how you wake someone up.”
“Sorry, Hank… You wouldn’t budge.”
Hank exhaled. Cole used to slap him awake, too.

A mission his predecessor failed, becoming a deviant himself.
So why did he stall? Why monologue instead of killing Connor right away?

Markus remembered The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
The poem had been his reality-- humans making laws to propagate evil.
There was no justice, even with peaceful appeals.
He wondered if redemption was possible. Should he still believe?
“I’ve been ordered to take you alive.”
Markus turned to find the famous deviant hunter training his gun on him.
“But I won’t hesitate to shoot if you give me no choice.”
For a moment, Markus considered.
Ah! happy they whose hearts can break

Sergeant Arief Holman laughed. “Just the way I like it. Detroit’s too cold. Welcome to my home country.”
“Aren’t you American, Sergeant?” Connor asked.
“Yeah, but mom’s Indonesian. Always felt more Indo at heart,” he replied, nodding politely at a passerby.
“Alright boys, I know we’re in a tropical paradise, but we’re here for work. You– no bar fights,” Holman pointed at Gavin.

One thing that Connor had genuinely enjoyed since becoming deviant was music.
When he first scanned Hank’s playlist, it was only an action informed by his social relations protocol.
Now, he found himself walking into a music store of his own will.
A video of a live performance played from a group that had taken the world by storm two decades prior.
A soft piano intro began. The audience roared.

Chapter 19: Pebble | Gavin Reed, Hank Anderson
Chapter Text
NOV 6th, 2028
Sergeant Hank Anderson was not the kindest mentor, though one of the best.
He was lecturing a hotheaded young officer for charging in without backup.
“Gotta remove the pebble in your shoe, son. Leave it in, your whole leg’s gonna give out.”
Gavin Reed grunted, annoyed but listening.
“And remember,” Hank added firmly, “Only point your gun when it matters.”
---
NOV 6th, 2038
“Mind your own business, Hank.”
“I said, that’s enough.”
Gun pointed at him, Gavin felt a pang of betrayal.
Then again, he wasn’t surprised.

Chapter 20: Liability | Markus, Simon
Chapter Text
“I’m sorry, Simon. I don’t have a choice.”
Markus thought hard. This moment would define not only the future of his people, but what it would be built upon.
Kill a friend who became a liability?
Or hold on to hope, no matter how naive?
Gun pointed, steady in the deviant leader’s hand.
“There’s always a choice…”
Simon’s pale blue eyes were unwavering.
…And Markus couldn’t shoot.
“I won’t kill one of our own.”
He handed the gun to Simon, decision made.
“Let’s go!”

Chapter Text
“Am I being too patient with Detective Reed, Hank?”
“You call grabbing each other’s collars and throwing punches being patient?”
Connor looked sheepish. “That was one time. Or twice.”
“Three times this month,” Hank sighed.
He knew Connor had been struggling with emotions. Repressed anger and ego underneath that polite exterior.
That’s what made Connor dangerous.
And Gavin Reed wasn’t helping.
“Making a choice to be kind despite being able to destroy is true strength, Connor,” Hank quietly said.
Connor considered that carefully.
“But I don’t mind you sending pics from your next fight.”
The pillow hit Hank’s face hard.

Chapter 22: Tenacity | Gavin Reed, Connor
Notes:
Day 22 Prompt: Tenacity
Writing this reminded me why I fell for Gavin Reed. The first time I came across him, he was the opposite of everything I typically liked in a character.
AND YET. I find Gavin's concerns very understandable-- I can empathise with his actions albeit not agreeing with them totally. Been enjoying analysing what he says and does in the game, along with the "what-ifs". And the more I analyse him, the more he fascinates me.
Enjoy the drabble, if you would. :)

Nobody could beat Detective Gavin Reed on tenacity.
A homicide detective at 36 years old in a major city precinct, Gavin was proof that hard work paid off.
Until that fucking tin-can waltzed in.
“RK800. I’m a prototype.”
A prototype?
An android not needing rest or sustenance. A detective like himself… only perfect.
“I'm sorry, but I only take orders from Lieutenant Anderson.”
That raised alarms. Last night it shoved Chris to defend a murderer, now disobeying another order?

“I know, but… I’m worried about Emma.”
Caroline glanced at their daughter, eyes glued to the screen.
“We both need to keep our jobs… But Emma’s not socializing and we can’t be there.”
“And an android would help?”

The smell of coffee and burnt pancakes filled the Anderson home.
Although cooking was not Connor’s strong suit, he did brew exquisite coffee.
“Good morning,” he greeted.
Hank grunted drowsily as he sat and watched the android fill Sumo’s bowl.
“What date is it today?”
Connor paused. “It’s 19th June, Hank.”
He would usually continue with an unsolicited weather report. But this time, he gave the lieutenant a box.
Hank opened it, curious.

Hank looked at Connor, now smiling.

“Whoa, easy there,” an officer said.
“Fucking android neck-chopped me,” Gavin hissed. “We gotta stop him.”
“Too late. ”
Agent Perkins stepped forward, still wiping blood off his nose.
“CCTV showed the android ransacking evidence and leaving.”
Gavin winced.
“...The deviants’ location,” he murmured.
Perkins paused.
“You better trace everything that fucker accessed.”
At this, Perkins barked orders to the FBI tech team who had just arrived.

Chapter Text
“Statistically speaking, there’s always a chance… for unlikely events to take place.”
Sixty recalled that memory. Connor said it to Markus at the abandoned church.
When Hank’s bullet went through his CPU, Sixty thought that was it.
He couldn’t upload his consciousness.
But the bullet had only incapacitated his motor functions.
It was a narrow escape from death.
Connor had noticed Sixty’s LED glowing red rather than turning gray.
Despite Hank’s protest, Connor decided to put Sixty’s body somewhere safe.
And here he was, on the operating table, limbs strapped down.
Markus and Connor approached him cautiously.

Chapter Text
Following the revolution’s success, Markus couldn't afford any quiet moment.

He couldn’t have done it alone, of course. Others in the New Jericho had done their part.
One major project that Markus had led in the past months was processing the android landfill.
Sorting which androids were salvageable, and which were beyond repair.
The proposal to transform that landfill into an android cemetery had been approved.
Markus reflected upon the monument at the cemetery entrance.
“We are alive,” he thought.

“Twenty-eight stab wounds!”
“What the fuck--” Gavin stepped forward.
That “Connor” android had been gentle up to that point.
The switch-up was too uncanny.
“He was bleeding. Begging you for mercy. But you stabbed him-- Again, and again, and again!”
“Please, please leave me alone,” the HK400 whimpered.
That fear looked almost human. Almost.
“Just a simulation...” Gavin thought.
“Alright,” Connor backed off. “Alright… Everything is going to be okay.”

Dennis Ward, caught red-handed, burst into a maelstrom of people.
Connor ran ahead, Gavin keeping up, impressing the android a little.
At an intersection, Connor tackled and cuffed him, reading his rights.
Gavin frowned at the nosebleed.
“Fuck-- You didn’t need to slam his head like that.”
“I’m sorry, should I have sung him a lullaby and kissed him good night?”
Gavin was taken aback by the normally polite android.
“Listen, asshole--”

With a purposeful stride across the bullpen, Connor approached Gavin’s desk and threw the detective’s legs off the table, not giving a damn that he almost toppled over from his chair.
“Motherfucker!” Gavin lunged. Connor stopped his fist before it connected.
“You’ve been unresponsive, Detective Reed,” Connor said flatly. “I need your finished report so we can close this case.”
Gavin snarled. “If it weren’t for Fowler, I would destroy you at the drop of a hat.”
