There was no happiness till you came along

Summary:

The turtles are given a mission, wear cloaking brooches and go to Aprils school to investigate a possible threat. It turns out that threat is Big Mamas adopted son and Aprils friend, Felix. Except he isn’t a threat, but he is the one in danger. The turtles team up with April and Usagi to help get Felix out of his terrible household, and they mayhaps find love along the way.

Chapter 1: Ah yes, turtles going to high school for a mission.

Notes:

Hi, this is the author of this fic after the first chapter had been posted, and in the second chapter there are more breaks between the paragraphs, just thought I add that since I know that it can be hard to read without paragraph breaks.

Thank you for reading!

Chapter Text

(This takes place after Todd scouts, season 2 ep 2)

After they had “defeated” Shredder the turtles needed something to do, all they did was train and they were getting antsy, especially after the whole Todd scouts fiasco. So, Splinter came up with an amazing idea, for all of them to go to April’s high school and investigate the possibility of one of Big Mama’s yokai hooligans. The turtles weren’t very pleased to hear this because
A. High school doesn’t sound like a fun place to be based on what Aprils tells them
B. They had little to no idea on how they were supposed to blend in???
C. THEY ARE GODAM TURTLES AND CANNOT BLEND IN THAT WELL.
D. Donnie had the purple dragons as mortal enemies and they went to April’s school.
The turtles began to argue uproariously as they started to list the reasons why that would be an HORRIBLE idea. “We don’t even have cloaking brooches, how are we supposed to blend in, without being chased by pitchforks and like at the Salisbury witch trials!” Leo exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air dramatically.

“This is the first and last time I shall be saying this but Leo is correct” Donnie said, not even looking up from his phone.

“Boys, boys it will be fine, purple can just use his tech to make a cloaking brooch for each of you, if not then well I don’t know, ask Raph”.
Raph groaned from the corner of the lair he just wanted a break for once, he felt a weight on his shoulder every day from being the so called “leader” and it wasn’t even just that it was that he was practically a mother to his brothers. He took care of them and reassured them and now had to deal with the task of helping them through their nightmares, everything that Splinter was supposed to be doing if he wasn’t so obsessed with glory and his old life. Sometimes Raph wondered how different life would be if Splinter had said that he was proud of them and was an actual father to them, how life would be if he didn’t have to handle the families burdens and be the parent whilst being the leader. (A/N- I’m sorry I just really hate rise Splinter he was a bad father)
Donnie pressed some buttons on his arm computer thing ( A/N-I don’t know what it’s called, tell me if you know)
“Hmm, I’ll go to my lab and begin testing out possibilities for the cloaking brooch, if you hear screams there’s a 65.3478 percent chance that I had a breakthrough” Donnie said still not looking up from his godam phone.
“Well, there you have it boys! Purple will make the cloaking devices for you all, and I will go watch my TV. The scorpions are coming out soon” splinter clapped his hands in excitement before returning to the TV room. Donnie went to his lab and immediately loud, cacophonous noises came from his lab. Raphael sighed, he knew no one was getting any sleep tonight because of the ear-splitting noises coming from the lab.

The next day, after a night of restlessness, Donnie emerged from the lab with some grease on his face and an evil smirk, like the one he always got when he found a discount on black market uranium.
“Let it be known, that in the span of one fortnight and lots of explosions, I have completed fully functioning cloaking brooches!” Donnie exclaimed, positively shaking with happiness from his creation working out.
Splinter did a little cheer and handed them each a cloaking brooch, it almost seemed like he wanted the turtles to be gone. But that couldn’t be right…Right?

The only cases that he would want them out of the lair is either, they’re being too loud and interrupting his TV time, or if he was doing something that he didn’t want them to know… but what could that possibly be?

Nevertheless, no one thought much of it and each turtles but on a cloaking brooch and turned into their human forms.

Leo had bleached blonde hair, one blue eye and one dark brown eye. Angular cheekbones and cat like eyes. He had light brown skin and vitiligo, especially concentrated where he had his eye bananas. He wore clothes that were more in the e-boy style with a a black sweater on top of a white button up shirt and black shorts that hugged his body in all the right places, paired with fishnets, black and white stripped arm warmers and a black choker necklace. He stood at the “grand” height of five foot five.

Mikey had fluffy dark brown curls and amber doe like eyes and a smooth full face with some freckles splattered across his cheeks. He wore light blue jean overalls that were shorts version of overalls with small splotches of highly saturated colours and leg warmers, that were a sort of beige white, and red and orange high top converse shoes. He had his circular markings on him still. He was the shortest at four foot eleven.

Raph has dark brown almost black hair, woven into almost shoulder length box braids, his eyes, like mikey’s, were amber but his was a more reddish shade. His eyes were slanted and seemed fierce at first glance but there was a hidden warmth in them. He wore a white tank top and black baggy cargo pants with red sneakers. He still had his grand height of six feet and muscular body.

Donnie had shoulder length hair that consisted of loose curls that were black with the tips dyed purple creating a gradient effect. He bore a sleeveless black turtleneck with arm warmers (A/N- I know, I know, I just love arm warmers)
that had the same purple colour as his hair, except more saturated. He had black baggy cargo pants, with fabric that seemed thin and light, sort of like athletic wear but with their own personal Donnie touch on them. He still had his rectangular purple markings on him and the popped out nicely against his skin. For some unknown reason he had one blue eye and one red eye, both eyes were the colour of his favourite and patented Donnie Tech glasses. He stood at five foot six, making him the second tallest of the bunch.

The turtles looked down at their human forms and the at each other. They stepped out of the lair for a new adventure to come. Little do they know, this little mission of theirs would change their entire lives.

Chapter 2: The beginning of the school year (technically the middle but the beginning for the turtles)

Summary:

The brothers go to the school and meet the principal.

Notes:

Im sorry that this is shorter, I just didn’t really know what to write in more detail but still had a general idea. This fic will update around once or twice a week.

Thank you for reading!

Chapter Text

The turtles walked into Aprils high school, they were buzzing with excitement. The last time that they were here, it was when Hypno decided to take over a school and make it disappear. They had gotten an email earlier that day, from the principal, requesting for them to meet her at her office first thing. So here they were walking down the empty halls that were soon to be filled with students.

As the strolled into the principals office, they noticed that they were getting some weird looks from the staff members. They didn’t know what they meant but it made them feel uncomfortable. Shrugging it off the continued their walk down the empty halls.

“WOW, this is so exciting!” Mikey squealed, looking amazed to be in a real high school. He suddenly ran and pointed to the lockers “look, look, they have LOCKERS” he dramatically pressed his whole body against them falling down slowly, making a loud squeaking noise.

“Well, dear youngest brother of mine, it is usual for schools to have lockers. I have spent all of the past night reading articles to try and decipher the mystery that is human public schools, and there is only an 75.388% chance that someone will break in and start shooting people” Donnie stated in his usual monotone voice, not noticing the panicked look that Mikey had.

“Donnie!” Raphael hissed, “Don’t you see that you’re worrying Mikey!” Raphael exclaimed while petting Mikey’s head as an attempt to calm him down. “I am simply stating a fact, dear brother” Donnie replied in a factual manner. Strangely enough, Leonardo was silent, he just seemed to be entertained by his brothers and amazed by the high school.

Falling into a comfortable silence they continued their stroll down the hall and up the stairs, attempting at navigating the school.

Once they reached the office, they sat down in the chairs that were left out and waited.
Five minutes later they’re called into the principals office, the principal was a woman in a black pantsuit with grey hair cut into a neat and glossy bob. She gave them a small smile and gestured for them to sit down in the chairs in front of her desk.

“Now, gentlemen, all of you are new students and brothers from what I understand. I have asked for you to come to my office first thing today, because I have no record of you ever going to school and want to hand you your schedules personally, so there’s no confusion” the lady spoke, she had a stern no nonsense tone, but spoke calmly.

She pulled out a piece of paper and read it carefully. “A Michaelangelo Hamato, will be placed in Mrs. Messengers class for homeroom, as a freshman. Donatello and Leonardo Hamato will be placed in Mr. Iglesias as their homeroom teacher, as Sophomores and Raphael Hamato will be in Ms. Clare’s homeroom class as a senior.”

She looked up at the turtles not giving them a chance to speak, “a guide will be awaiting each of you. Mr. Michaelangelo, you will get Mr. Milo Dua, the brown haired boy waiting outside, as your guide, he is in your homeroom and English class. Mr. Donatello and Leonardo will be assigned Ms. April O’Neil as their guide, she volunteered. And Mr. Raphael will get Mr. Felix Nexus as your guide, the boy with the pink hair.” The principal stood up without a word and opened the door to her office to let them out while handing them their schedules.

Once the turtles were out of her office she slammed the door shut. Raph blinked a few time, still a bit shocked by that interaction. “How come she didn’t let us say anything?” he questioned, wondering out loud. “I for one found it quite pleasant, she was concise and straight to the point.” Donnie said, he had always preferred having straightforward conversations and answers. Leo and Mikey shrugged, having nothing to say and have not yet developed an opinion on the principal.

The brothers spotted their respective guides and separated.

Chapter 3: Raph meets his guide.

Chapter Text

Raph approached his guide, feeling a bit uncertain and uneasy as he walked towards a boy with light pink hair, that was messy but somehow neat in an effortless way, that seemed soft and fluffy, like a texture that would melt under Raph’s touch.

His eyes were a deep pitch black, like a black hole that Raph could get sucked into. His eyes were wide and unblinking, framed with impossibly long lashes that made his eyes appear soft and doe like.

With soft, androgynous features, pale ivory skin- that was smooth and unblemished- and plush lips that were slightly parted as if preparing to whisper a secret for only Raph’s ears. He looked more like a storybook angel, rather than a regular high school student.

He stood at about five-foot-five, dressed in layered black and white: an oversized black sweater atop a crisp white shirt with its collar peeking over the neckline, like some stylish schoolboy from an era Raph couldn’t name. Around his throat was a black choker, a subtle rebellion tucked into his otherwise preppy aesthetic. His shorts, ripped and snug, hugged his curves with a confidence that left Raph breathless, and beneath them stretched black fishnet tights that drew the eye and held it.

Raph had never really felt this sort of feeling before, he was breathless, like he was in disbelief in the beauty that laid before him. His inner monologue was filled with thoughts about this curious and enchanting boy that he had just met. He knew that there was something slightly off about the boy, like he harboured some secret behind those beautiful black eyes, but he couldn’t help being utterly enchanted by him.

He was not only beautiful but for some reason he held himself in a way that made it seem like he was trying to hide. He was a total enigma in Raph’s eyes. He was ethereal but unsure of himself and seemed insecure. Raph couldn’t wait to find out more about him.

Raph felt a blush creeping onto his cheeks as he made eye contact with the boy. He looked less human and more like an ethereal being. Raph had never seen anyone so beautiful in his fifteen years of life.

Raph ransacked his brain, trying to remember the boy’s name. The principal had said it before… Felix Nexus. That was the boys name. Felix like happiness and Nexus like connection, Raph thought. The name seemed Nexus seemed familiar, it took him a moment to realize that the Battle Nexus had the word Nexus in it. He almost hit himself at how long it took him to realize that.

Shaking his head, to try and keep his mind from going on tangents once more, he turned to Felix.

“So, you’re my guide right?” Raph asked, feeling a bit nervous. Felix offered a soft smile and Raph thought he would die, he didn’t think the boy could get more stunning but he proved Raph wrong and did. “My name is Felix, you’re Raphael right?” Felix’s voice was soft and sweet like honey.

Raph nodded, “yeah that’s me.” There was a moment of silence after he said that, “So, your name is Raphael, like the Italian renaissance artist and architect?” Raph blinked a few times, not registering that Felix was talking to him. “Oh, yeah. And your name is Felix like after the word for happiness in Latin right?”

Felix raised an eyebrow at this and let out a soft laugh, “I guess my name makes up for the happiness that is absent in my life”. Raph frowned at his response, what did that mean? “Wait- what do you mean-“ Raph was abruptly interrupted by Felix grabbing his arm and pulling him.

“So over here is the science lab, by your schedule this is your class for third period and Mr. White, teaches chemistry, though he prefers for us to call him Mr. Walter, since he wants to be cool and hip” Felix said, his lips quirking into a small smile with a soft roll of his eyes.

Raph let out a small chuckle at that, he still was confused about what Felix had meant earlier about happiness not being present in his life, but he shrugged it off. Deciding to ignore it for now, he paid close attention to the tour that Felix was giving. He showed him the library, which Raph had little to no interest in, till he found out they had Jupiter Jim comics, the music room and the balcony, where students liked to do their work.

Felix spun around on his heel, facing Raph and spreading his arms, “Now here is my favourite spot in the school” Raph looked at what was behind him and he saw the art room. “How come this is your favourite place?” Raph asked innocently, meaning no offence. “Well, I love to paint, and I’ve spent so much time after school working on art pieces for projects here that it sort of starts to feel like a second home. All the people that are in there are super nice and the teacher, Ms. Hall, is very friendly” Felix said.

Raph wondered what his home life must be like for him to consider the art room as a second home. “I know we only just met Felix and tell me if I’m overstepping any boundaries, but is your home situation bad?” Raph asked, he had a tendency to worry about everyone he met, including a complete stranger.

Felix’s smiled dropped. “No offence Raphael, but we only just met and I’m not comfortable disclosing any more personal details. I took this opportunity to be your guide as a favour to April, she’s my friend and she asked to to show you around, I would be more than happy to befriend you, but that question is too personal for me to answer” Felix stated, there was no aggression in his tone, he kept his voice level, but Raph could tell that his query hit to close to home.

Raph smiled apologetically, “sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to overstep any boundaries” Felix gave him a warm smile “no need to apologize, after all we’ve just met, so how are you supposed to know my boundaries”.

He looks so pretty smiling, Raph thought, and then mentally groaned. He was here on a mission, not to get a boyfriend. The sudden ringing of the school bell, signaling the beginning of school, interrupted Raph’s thoughts.

“Well, see you later, Felix” Raph said, and began to head towards his first period class. “Silly billy, the first class is homeroom and we have the same teacher. I’m going with you” Felix said with a slight shake of his head.

Chapter Text

Leo and Donnie headed towards April. They had seen her earlier that day in the lair and she had told them that she had a special surprise for them. They definitely weren’t expecting this. Leo swing an arm around her shoulder and in his naturally loud and flamboyant voice he said “well April, dearie, it seems that you are stuck with my magnificent self annnnddd Donnie Dee over there” Leo jutted his thumb out pointing at Donnie who was typing something on his phone and only looked up to glare at Leonardo.

“Well, let’s get started boys!” April began to walk over to a classroom. “Over here is where our homeroom class is” she pointed to a metal door where the name “Mr. Iglesias”.

Leo stared at it for a while and then rustled around his bag and pulled out some heart shaped glasses with cherry red frames and popped them on. “If I have to read,I have to read in style” Leo said, Donnie rolled his eyes and let out a quiet sigh. Leo had been learning how to decipher Donnie’s expressions for years, since his lovely brother was usually monotone, he saw Donnie’s lips slightly quirk downwards and he knew that was a sign of exasperation.

Leo swung his arm around Donnie’s shoulders. “Ah exasperation, an emotion that I see quite often. Usually directed at moi” Leo said jokingly with a slight sarcastic drawl. Donnie took his brother’s arm off his shoulder and turned to April. “So, what’s next on the tour?” Donnie asked.

Leo raised an eyebrow at his brother’s question, he was certain that he saw Donnie memorizing the school map earlier that day, but he decided not to question it. He turned to April, “yeah April, what’s next on this little tour of ours?”. Then he saw April not looking them and instead looking at something else. He turned to April’s line of sight, and saw what she was staring at.

Leo’s lips quirked into a small smirk as he saw what she was looking at. It was Raph, blushing furiously as he talked to his guide. Raph’s guide was cute, Leo had to admit that, but he wasn’t really Leo’s type. Leo usually likes more of the rabbit samurai variety. Leo leaned in close to April with a wicked grin on his face. “Say, how’s about we ditch this tour and follow them instead. I would love for some blackmail on my dearest older brother” Leo said with a mischievous gleam in his eyes.

April turned back to him, she seemed to be contemplating something, then an equally, if not more, evil grin made it onto her face. “Oh ho, I would like that very much, then I can finally hit as many things as I want” April stated. Leo snorted at his friend’s words. Leo always knew that April loved her bat more than she loved life itself, but he never thought she would come this close to admitting it.

Leo turned around, preparing to ask Donnie to come on their spying mission with them, but Donnie wasn’t there. Leo frowned for a minute, then weighed between the choices. Go to find Donnie and miss an opportunity to gain blackmail on Raph, or spy on Raph and gain blackmail.

Donnie will be fine, Leo thought. He had enough tech with him to last an apocalypse. He’ll be fine, probably, hopefully, maybe. Leo wasn’t doing a great job of reassuring himself that everything was going to be fine. After all they were here to hunt down a possibly dangerous yokai. For some unknown reason, Leo’s brain focused only on the word dangerous.

Leo snapped himself out of his thoughts when he saw Raph and the boy walking away out of the corner of his eye. He winked at April and did a hand signal for her to follow him. April looked behind her, at the seemingly endless and empty hallway, before deciding to follow Leo.

They carefully and quietly crept up behind a pillar and watched Raph and the boy intently. Leo tried to make out what they were saying but he couldn’t read their lips very well from this angle. He needed to get closer. He tiptoed his way down the hall and closer to them, where they were standing in front of the art room. He could make out an unfamiliar voice that he assumed belonged to the boy.

“…No offence Raphael, but we only just met and I’m not comfortable disclosing any more personal details…”. Oooh, interesting. Raph had asked a question and messed up. Leo walked a bit closer, the boys voice growing quieter and brought forth the need to move closer. He saw Raph’s lips moving but then the bell rang. Curses, Leo thought. He wanted to hear more, this was becoming highly entertaining.

Leo watched as the boy grabbed Raph’s arm and they began walking towards class. Leo smiled at them, they would make a cute couple he thought. He sighed as he realized he needed to get to class. He began walking towards his homeroom, when he realized that April wasn’t with him anymore. Interesting, he thought. First Donnie and now April.

He weighed the choices of skipping class and investigating further, well it was clear which choice he made. As he walked down the hall, he heard a loud clatter coming from a janitors closet. He opened it and saw a sight he definitely wasn’t expecting to see. It was April and her friend, what’s her name, mini Frankie. Sun? Sunny? Sonnet? Sunita! That was it. It was April and Sunita kissing and necking and stuff.

“well well well, what do we have here? Whatever happened to bros before hoes, dearest April?” Leo said sarcastically. April scoffed and punched him in the arm and Sunita blushed deeply. “See, at least she has the decency to be embarrassed. But you ,young miss was kissing, in a closet! Do your parents know the truth about their daughter?” Leo said, his voice somehow becoming even more sarcastic.

April grabbed a broomstick and held it menacingly, “one more word out of your mouth…” April didn’t need to finish that sentence, and Leo was already halfway to class, giggling wickedly.

Chapter Text

Hi, so like, I’m going to be taking a quick break. I genuinely love this fic and have many ideas for it but the problem is, is that I’m incredibly sick.

It’s summer break for me and I almost always fall into a depression in the summer, that along with the news that one of my closest friends is dying and could possibly die before she has a chance to really live her life and that another one of my friends is getting a possible diagnosis with cancer, has left me much more stressed and depressed than usual. Also my therapist has cancelled the last few of our sessions and a lot of things have happened in between.

I do deeply apologize for anyone who is currently reading this fic, but I need a break to process all of this and make sure I don’t try and harm myself or others as I have done in the past.

Thank you for being understanding and again I apologize.

Chapter 6: Donnie the angle of vengeance

Hi, so like I’m back. My friend doesn’t have cancer thankfully, but the series is going to update a bit less frequently. Sorry. Here’s a cookie 🍪

Chapter Text

Donnie wasn’t very excited to go on the tour, yes he was delighted that it was April that was giving them the tour and not some complete stranger, but nevertheless he wasn’t excited. He had been studying the maps of the school the night beforehand, calculating escape routes, and what was the best option for entering the school.

He wasn’t paying much attention as April led them around, only looking up from his phone briefly when Leo, was being an insolent annoying child, but what else did he expect for his “dearest” brother. “If I have to read, I have to read in style” Leo said as he pulled on a pair of sunglasses that were heart shaped with red frames.

Donnie rolled his eyes at his brother’s antics, for once could Leo act normal?, he thought. A little voice in his head told him no and Donnie reluctantly agreed with it. As he saw his brother grin and sling an arm around him. Donnie frowned, he hated physical contact, even if it was from his brothers, he still preferred to be left alone.

“Ah exasperation, an emotion that I see quite often. Usually directed at moi” Leo said jokingly with a slight drawl that Donnie recognized as sarcasm. Donnie took his brother’s arm off his shoulder, eager to get away from the unexpected touch. He turned to April. “So, what’s next on the tour?” Donnie asked, he wasn’t really excited about the tour, he already had all the information he needed, but once he heard that April volunteered to give them a tour, he thought that it would be proper etiquette.

He heard Leo asking an echo of the question he had just asked, but all he saw was that April was distracted. He saw what she was looking at. It was Raph and his tour guide, Donnie analyzed their expressions and body language. Raph appeared to be blushing and the boy looked indifferent yet a bit interested.

But that wasn’t what truly peaked Donnie’s interest, it was sign that said

“Feeling different? Maybe you don’t feel romantic emotions or are just questioning everything, come join our club on Mondays before school starts”

Donnie read the sign a couple times over and saw the fine print that told him that it was in room E213. Donnie began in that direction, not caring to tell Leo or April. If they needed him they could always just call him.

He walked through the halls and spotted Mikey with his guard and heard a quick snippet of their conversation. “…yeah I prefer to be called by they/them pronouns…” he heard Mikey say.

Interesting, Donnie thought. He would have to change his wording and file on Mikey to include this. He didn’t think much of it as he had some suspicions that his younger sibling was deviating from the social norm and gender binary.

Not caring to eavesdrop any further Donnie turned around and began to walk down the halls again. He went past rows and rows of lockers before he finally reached his destination.

Room E213.

He opened the door, making a small crack so he could peek in and take a quick gander inside.

He saw a group of kids sitting in a circle and talking. Donnie could hear the conversation if he concentrated. “…do you think those freaks are actually going to show up?” One girl with long blonde hair, whispered to her friend.

Donnie stopped and his heart sank. Oh, oh. They weren’t actually a group of people that wanted to make others fit in, they were just some insolent bigots, who thought that to be different was wrong.

Donnie quickly closed the door but not before he planted a bug to listen in and record the conversation. He was making sure that he had evidence to report the kids to the principal, or to use as future blackmail material. Who knows?

Nobody was going to possibly endanger his family, and he was just making sure of that. He knew that Mikey was nonbinary and he had suspicions of Leo being gay or something along those lines.

One thing that he would make sure of is that his siblings would be well protected and that nobody would hurt them.

He walked down the halls and found the library which had computers. He smiled to himself as he made his way to them. He no longer was planning to report the kids but to elicit revenge. They had nothing wrong directly to Donnie, but just the possibility of his family being hurt by some little twerps was enough to make him take his own route and have his revenge.

He logged in, using a different name and email. He went onto all the social media platforms and posted the video he took with his bug of the kids talking. He watched as the video uploaded and he watched it out of pure amusement.

It was the blonde girl taking to a brunette girl and he could hear them. They were saying the same thing that Donnie heard the blonde girl say but now, oh now he had more information on them. “..Tiffany, are you sure this is a good idea? I mean we’re pretty well known what if we get found out” ten brunette asked. “Stop worrying so much, you’ll get frown lines. It’ll be fine Steph. Just stick to the plan” the blonde girl said.

Donnie chucked under his breath, he felt like a mad scientist that was watching a lab rat do a particularly amusing thing. oh those girl were idiots, but it would all be worth it. Sure if his dearest Papa found out he would be mad. But, Splinter rarely ever talked to him. Raph didn’t use social media and Mikey and Leo, who did use social media would just be proud of him.

He logged off the computer and followed the post he made on his phone. He watched as the numbers of views and comments went up. He saw that Aprils account had commented under it, saying that she was disgusted and posting several pride flag emojis.

Donnie heard the bell ring and he walked silently to class. He knew that he had potentially ruined the girls lives and future careers, but did he care. No. After all they brought this upon themselves and Donnie was just someone giving them their consequence.

It was like he was their guardian angel, bestowing a punishment upon them for being so cruel. He walked into class and saw that Leo wasn’t there. Oh, well at least he had a win earlier that morning.
