Work Text:
I've tried to hold these feelings back, but I can't anymore. Meet me by the torii gate at the school's entrance at midnight so I can confess my feelings to you. Idiot.
Satoru re-read the little note about ten times before flopping back onto his dorm bed.
“What the fuck?” he asked the ceiling, of course getting no response.
Someone left him a love letter.
Someone left him a love letter. At his door.
The pool of possible anonymous admirers wasn't particularly large, either. There were only four other students at the school right now… and whoever wrote the message typed it so it wouldn't be obvious.
Option One: Haibara. His underclassman was pretty cute, but in a more puppy dog kind of way. Besides, Haibara was the kind of guy who didn't shy away from his feelings- he'd tell Satoru outright if he had a crush on him. Unless he'd just watched some romance anime and thought a midnight confession would be extra romantic. Okay, so Haibara was still a possibility.
Option Two: Nanami. Satoru spent enough time making fun of the boy’s unfortunate haircut that the addition of “idiot” made a lot of sense. Had Satoru teased his underclassman into having a crush on him? Nanami would also hate admitting he had feelings for him, so a midnight rendezvous would allow the privacy of things. Nanami was still on the table.
Option Three: Shoko. She also always called him an idiot, so that would make sense. She was also the only girl at the school right now, so keeping things secret would probably make sense if she didn't want the other guys to get all pissy about it. So Shoko was still on the list too.
Option Four: Suguru. Yeah, okay. Satoru had been harboring a crush on his best friend since the literal moment they met. At first it had manifested as antagonism, but now they'd become inseparable partners on their missions. The strongest. But the thing was, they told each other pretty much everything! And Suguru would definitely have said something by now, especially since Satoru flirted with him every chance he got. So, it was possible, but Suguru was probably lower on the list of possibilities than the others. It just would have come up before!
Satoru groaned and grabbed his notebook to head to class, leaving the note on his pillow. He'd find out at midnight… or beforehand, if his plan went well.
“Okay, which of you thought it would be funny to prank me this morning?” he asked as he walked into the classroom. Suguru, Shoko, and Nanami barely looked up from their varying tasks (phone, phone, and book, respectively), and Haibara tilted his head (as mentioned before: puppy dog).
“What do you mean, Gojo-senpai?” Satoru slid into his seat by Suguru, scooting closer as usual.
“Thank you for asking- someone left me this dorky anonymous love letter saying they wanted to confess their feelings at midnight. Well, I'm not falling for it! Whoever did this, very funny, but I'm not gonna go out at midnight just so you can tease me about it for the rest of our lives! I'll be in bed. Sleeping.” No one reacted to his bold statement, so he nudged Suguru with an elbow.
“C'mon, Suguru. We can stay up late and play video games tonight?” Suguru didn't look up from his phone, but shoved Satoru back playfully, as he always did.
“Maybe some other night. It's getting warmer, I'd like to call it early today.” Satoru shrugged, even though Suguru almost never passed up an opportunity to kick his ass in Smash Bros.
“Sure. Whatever.” Anything more he wanted to say was silenced as Yaga entered the room, slamming a stack of books on the desk.
Okay, so maybe he didn't get any information despite needling his classmates all day. And he still wasn't convinced it wasn't a prank. But at 11:58, Satoru stood by the torii gate, still in his sleep clothes (he had in fact slept, but set an alarm to wake up in time to make it to the gate), looking around for anyone else.
“Thought you said it was a prank, and you weren't falling for it,” Suguru said, resting his chin on Satoru’s shoulder as he approached him from behind. Satoru yelped, and then shoved Suguru off him with a laugh.
“Fine, fine. You got me. You win!” he declared, throwing his hands in the air.
“It's not a prank, dumbass,” Suguru scoffed, shoving Satoru back.
“Eh?”
“You're really gonna make me say it out loud? You're insufferable.” Satoru stared for a moment as he processed.
Suguru was here. At midnight. He said it wasn't a prank. Holy shit, did Suguru actually like him back ?
“Wait, you have a crush on me?” he asked. “Why didn't you say anything?”
“Because you didn't say anything either! I don't just let anyone crash in my dorm bed, especially when their room is literally next door. I've been giving you hints for ages and your dumb ass hasn't picked up on any of them!” Satoru’s jaw dropped.
“I thought you were just being a good friend! I had been flirting with you since we met and you never reacted, so I thought-” The end of his sentence vanished from his brain as Suguru pulled him closer and pressed a kiss to his lips.
“You don't know how to shut the hell up,” he said in little more than a whisper. Satoru looked at his best friend, starry-eyed.
“Well, if that's your chosen method of getting me to shut up, then I'm gonna talk even more ,” he said, his mouth widening into a big smile. “For example-” Suguru sighed and kissed him again before slipping his hand into Satoru’s, leading them back to the school.
“You have until we get back to the dorms to talk. And then I'm gonna make you shut up again.” Satoru laughed and picked up his pace.
“Then let’s hurry up!”
