Difficult Conversations: Asahina Mafuyu and Yoisaki Kanade

Summary:

The past affects the future. Mafuyu and Kanade both know this. And, when they look back on their past, sometimes they become afraid about their respective futures. The former fears becoming a lamentable existence, the latter fears ceasing to exist altogether in this world. Here, two conversations they have with one another about their futures are detailed.

Chapter 1: Ivy

Summary:

This is the first of the two conversations, centering on Mafuyu.

Chapter Text

“…Kanade.”

“Hm?”

The two had been sitting together at the Yoisaki Residence’s dining room table, eating dinner as the sun slowly set. Kanade noticed over time that Mafuyu seemed increasingly downcast and quiet throughout the evening, but hadn’t figured out a good time to ask if anything was wrong.

It seemed she wouldn’t need to, though.

“There’s something I’m a little afraid of.” Mafuyu shifted in her seat, ever so slightly.

“Ah… what is it?”

“I’m afraid I’ll become like Mom.”

Her mother… Kanade thought back to her experiences with Mrs. Asahina. Said experiences were… far from the best, to put it simply.

“That is, not understanding others, not letting them be who they want to be, being a person who is considered stifling…” Mafuyu’s voice grew deeper as her worry bloomed. “I don’t… want to be like that…”

“I think…” Kanade spoke slowly. “I think, if you’re truly worried about such things… isn’t that a sign you won’t end up like that…?”

“That… may be so. But even then, I’m sure… I’m sure Mom was not like that from the beginning. If anyone can change, then even me…”

“Mafuyu…” Kanade reached out her hand and placed it on the lyricist’s. “Please don’t forget… you have us. You know we won’t be afraid to keep you on the right track, yeah?”

“You, and Niigo… yeah.” Mafuyu sighed. “That’s true.”

“Mm.” Kanade nodded and leaned back. There was a brief moment of silence in the room.

“I haven’t been too much trouble for you, right? Doing all this, even staying here…”

“Ah… of course not. For you… I feel like I’d do almost anything.”

“Oh.” Mafuyu’s eyes flicked down. “Thank you.”

Ah… I always feel warm when she says such things…

And…

Mafuyu looked up at Kanade.

She’s blushing, too…

Chapter 2: Carnation

Summary:

This is the second of the two conversations, centering on Kanade.

Chapter Text

“Ah, Mafuyu…” Kanade called out softly. “Before I go in the bath, there’s something I wanted to ask you.”

“Hm? Go ahead.”

“Do you ever, um, get worried about my health…?” Mafuyu froze up a bit upon hearing Kanade's question, myriad thoughts evident in her eyes.

“…I do. A lot, actually…”

“Oh…” Kanade seemed slightly dejected, a bit of guilt arising in her for continuing to concern Mafuyu. “I’m sorry for worrying you… I suppose I can try eating more…”

“Well, I would be happy if you did, but it’s not just that.” Mafuyu stepped closer. “You know… your mom.”

“Ah. Right…” Kanade’s shoulders slumped as a few sparks flashed through her weak memory. She sat down on her bed before speaking up again. “I don’t know what she had, exactly… I don’t think Dad said it was something I might suffer from, but…”

“You’re worried too?”

“A little… honestly, I hadn’t considered my long-term health until recently, so I had disregarded it… but now…”

“I… truly hope you don’t have it. And if you do…”

“Ah, wait—” Kanade’s eyes widened slightly as the lyricist pulled her into a hug, lifting her up and squeezing her.

“I’ll be here, okay? No matter how bad it gets, no matter how far into the future it is… I’ll stay by your side.” Mafuyu’s voice wavered, yet carried determination all the same.

“T-thank you…” Kanade relaxed, allowing herself to be held. It felt soothing, just as soothing as a warm bath…

“Now… you should check on the bath.” Mafuyu gently set Kanade back onto her own two feet. “You don’t want it to overflow like last time.”

“Ahaha… Honami was a bit upset when that happened, huh…?”
