Yearning. 🍃👾 [MaskedPixels]

Summary:

Kinich and Xiao have always been close friends. Recently, they began holding hands on occasion — even in public. They swear it’s nothing more.

Work Text:

“Kinich, can I talk to you?” Ifa asks, coaxing Kinich somewhere more private. He didn’t want to embarrass him in any way.

Ifa leads him away from the busy area where they were initially hanging out at and into desolate park — not a soul in sight. The silence was deafening. Kinich’s guard was immediately raised to the highest degree. Knowing that Ifa never took anything seriously made the suspense even worse.

“Yeah, what is it?” Kinich narrows his eyes, assuming whatever he was about to say would be extremely bad.

Ifa pauses, letting out a sigh.

“With you and the adeptus, is anything going on?”

‘Seriously.’

“That’s an idiotic question. We’re obviously just friends.” Kinich retorts, getting oddly defensive about the situation. He’d been asked about this too many times to not be mildly peeved.

“Are you sure, bro? Not a lot of friends hold hands. I mean, I would never do that with Ororon.” Ifa adds, crossing his arms before continuing. “I just want you to be honest with me.”

“Nothing is going on. Besides, you and Ororon have a very different friendship than me and Xiao.” Kinich snaps.

“Yeah, me and Ororon have a platonic friendship.” Ifa laughs. “You and Xiao on the other hand…”

“That isn’t what I meant. Your friendship with Ororon lacks emotional depth. You’re both so frivolous and spontaneous. Whilst Xiao has a deeper connection with me, due to our time being limited together.” Kinich explains, trying not to seem too angry.

“Oh yeah, I forgot he’s immortal.”

“Don’t remind me.”

The following day, Xiao visits Kinich as usual. Kinich can’t shake the feeling of all the confrontations he’s had with people over this. Why was it such a big deal to everyone? Was it truly not normal to show affection to friends?

“Kinich, you look upset.” Xiao comments.

“People have been asking me about you.”

“Really now, what do they say?” Xiao inquired, already seeing where this is headed. He wasn’t sure what to think of it all himself, as he never believed he could fall for a human. Yet, he already was.

“It’s about us holding hands.”

“Ah, I figured.” Xiao lets out a deep sigh straight from his lungs. “We can stop, if you want.”

Suddenly, Kinich takes both of Xiao’s hands in his, interlocking their fingers. His grip is soft but firm. Kinich looks directly into his eyes, piercing his gaze. Despite all the allegations, there was nothing he wanted more than to be close to Xiao. He couldn’t bear the thought of not expressing himself to the fullest while he was still alive.

“I take it you don’t care what people think?”

“No.”
