The End Is Not What Finishes a Story

Summary:

Jake already has his family. He left the precinct and now he's the present, fun dad for Mac he wished he had when he was a kid. He is happily married with his "friendly detective rival" as well. But is this really the end of all chaos of his life? Or will something appear to... spice this whole thing up?

Notes:

heyy this aint my first work, but is the first time I've posted around here. English aint my first language, so forgive me if there are some mistakes around. I'll try to post often, but no promises. School will mess my schedule up, and my stupid brain takes a few weeks to have an imagination blast. Have fun :)

Work Text:

“I love you, Peralta.”

Those were the last words he heard from his criminal best friend, Doug. Well, they were actually “Tigers and Woods”, but we throw that part away, of course. It’s supposed to be emotional, damn it. But after all, who actually is he? Jake Peralta, for sure. The great, incredible human/genius, Jake Peralta. But now he has a little family. He literally lived enemies to lovers with his wife, Amy Santiago. And his little pretty son, Mac. Or Macaroni. Now, Jake is retired from the 99 precinct, since Holt and Santiago left, Rosa as well and Terry is currently the chief. Those eight years passed so fast, it went by flying. His little Mac is already 5 years old, even! Man, time flies. And Jake is certainly so happy. He wouldn’t complain about anything…

Except something. A small, little detail.

Doug. He misses Doug. It all started with him helping him catching some car stealing criminal with Rosa, until Doug betrayed Jake. And it happened again. And again. And again. Again and again. Until now. This time, Doug betrayed Jake. Oh, what a big surprise. But not fully. He defended Jake from the criminals who wanted to kill him. And that threw gasoline into the sparkle of warmth that grew inside Jake’s heart. Doug got arrested, but not for long. Somehow, “accidentally”, Jake’s pen slipped inside Doug’s pocket. And Doug escaped. Oh no. Such a bother. But Jake knew about this little “accident”. And oh, how he wished this went like he thought. But the world is not perfect, is it?
Two weeks later, Jake got a call in the middle of work time. And as he anticipated, he did hear Doug’s voice. It made his heart skip a beat. Maybe two, making his chest ache a bit, and his head dizzy, but nothing too serious. They talked a bit. About Doug escaping the prison. Well, not a surprise. About Doug knowing that Jake caused the little pen “aciddent”. Not a surprise as well. He just playfully pretended to know nothing. And he heard a chuckle from Doug. That made his heartbeat rise high like a skyscraper. But Jake was good at pretending, so he didn’t say anything. But as much as he was happy, the fact that Doug is Amsterdam made Jake’s stomach fall in dread. So he wouldn’t come back. Oh dear. He stuttered a bit in his next words, and Doug noticed, but he didn’t comment. Yet, when the “I love you” part came, Jake’s face turned into a tomato with the softest smile. Oh, how he wished Doug came back. So, so badly. Yet that was five years ago, y’know. He should’ve gotten over it.

Well, should is totally different than what actually did happen.

Since that day, every night has been restless to Jake. Sure, Mac did cry a lot when he was a baby, yet now he’s five. Jake tried to believe it was all because of his son, he really did. But deep down, he knows the truth. The dreams tell him. The weird dreams that he has and repeats every night. Doug is always there. Whether it is just hanging out with him again or… hotter stuff. But Jake, as the dumbass he was, didn’t tell Amy or even Boyle. I mean, he had a pride to hold, c’mon! The great Jake Peralta couldn’t have such a crush, especially because he’s a man. Not that he’s homophobic, not at all. He has a wife, it ain’t right! His brain said otherwise, though. As the days pass, Jake grows more troubled, but he hides it from everyone. Especially to his little, precious family. Amy and Mac are the most important people in the world to him, not… Doug. And he isn’t his father. He won’t just leave and marry someone else. The idea is not even tempting. But then, time should heal this stupid love. Yeah, definitely time will smother it.

As long as Doug stays away and doesn’t call, he should be fine. Yet fate is cruel.
