(You are) My truth

Summary:

"Five had always imagined that falling in love would be a dramatic affair—a revelation that would leave him breathless, like being punched in the gut or hit by a truck."

Notes:

Title from a (very obscure) song by the band Anabanta - Soulmates
"In the mysteries of your heart, my blood and story intertwined
Every sigh that slipped away, carried your name and echoes of your voice
In the confines of the darkness, we left our dreams to awaken
Soulmate, let us go beyond, to where destiny will find us"

Work Text:

Five had always imagined that falling in love would be a dramatic affair—a revelation that would leave him breathless, like being punched in the gut or hit by a truck. But when it finally happened, when he finally realized that he was in love with Lila, it wasn’t like that at all. There was no punch to the gut, no disorienting sense that the world around him had suddenly changed.

It was quiet. Subtle. A gentle sort of understanding that crept up on him, settling into his bones like a truth he’d always known but never acknowledged.

He was sitting beside Lila on the uncomfortable subway seats, the endless clatter of the train tracks beneath them the only sound that filled the air. It was cold in the car, their breath misting slightly in the dim light, but neither of them seemed to mind. They were used to it by now, the constant chill, the unrelenting rhythm of the subway. It was their life. For five long years, this had been their reality.

Lila was resting back in her seat, her arms slack by her side as she stared blankly at the row of seats in front of them. She looked tired—hell, they both were. But there was something about the way her mouth curled in that familiar smirk when she caught him watching her, or the way she always managed to make some smart-ass comment, no matter how bad things got, that made him feel… lighter. Made him feel like maybe, just maybe, everything was going to be okay.

It says something, that Five can now find comfort in her expressions, when he used to despise them, back then.

She let out a soft sigh, and without a word, let her head fall onto his shoulder. It wasn’t unusual for her to do this; over the years, they had grown comfortable in each other’s space, and little gestures like this had become second nature. But today, for whatever reason, it felt different. It felt like more.

Five stared down at the top of her head, his breath catching in his throat as a surge of something unfamiliar stirred in his chest. He didn’t move for a moment, too afraid that if he did, he might break the spell. He was used to the casual touches they shared—Lila grabbing his arm to drag him somewhere, her hand brushing against his when she passed him a blanket, the occasional playful shove—but this was different. This was… softer. Warmer.

Almost without thinking, he dipped his head and pressed the softest kiss into her hair. It was a gentle, fleeting thing, so light that she probably didn’t even notice. She didn’t stir, didn’t pull away or make some teasing comment like she usually would. She just stayed there, her head resting against his shoulder, and for a moment, everything felt peaceful.

And that was when it hit him.
Not like a slap, not like the earth-shattering revelation he’d always thought love would be. It was more like a quiet, steady wave that washed over him, leaving him with the undeniable truth that had been lurking in the back of his mind for God knows how long.

He was in love with Lila.

It made sense, didn’t it? How else could he explain the way his heart sped up when she smiled at him, or the way his chest ached when she was upset? How else could he explain the fact that no matter how bleak things seemed, no matter how much they struggled to find a way back home, he could still find moments of solace just by being by her side?

He turned his head slightly, watching the gentle rise and fall of her breathing as she rested against him. As long as I have you right here, with me, I can survive anything, he thought.

And there it was. The truth of it. He didn’t need anything else—not the mission, not the promise of escape from this endless limbo, not even the powers he’d spent his whole life relying on. He just needed her. Lila. The one person who could drive him absolutely insane and keep him sane at the same time.

Five took a slow, steadying breath, his chest tightening as the realization sank in. He was in love with her. Stupidly, hopelessly in love with Lila Pitts.

He didn’t know when it had started, exactly. Maybe it had been brewing ever since they’d gotten stuck in this godforsaken subway, forced to rely on each other in ways they never had before. Maybe it had started with all those late-night conversations, when they’d both let their guard down just enough to reveal pieces of themselves they usually kept hidden. Or maybe it had been in the quiet moments, like this one, when everything else faded away, and it was just the two of them, side by side, in the endless journey to nowhere.

It didn’t really matter when it had happened. What mattered was that it had.

And now, as they sat there in the cold, empty subway car, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was it. This was what he’d been looking for, what he’d been missing all along. Not just a way out of the subway. Not just a solution to their endless predicament. But this. Her.

He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly tight as he tried to wrap his head around the enormity of it all. The implications of what this meant. Because it wasn’t simple. It could never be simple. Lila was married. To his brother, no less. She had kids—three of them. She had a life that, no matter how fractured or complicated, wasn’t his to claim. And yet… here they were. Together. Always together.

And he loved her.

Five let out a quiet, shaky breath, his eyes fluttering closed as he rested his head against the back of his seat. He didn’t know what came next. He didn’t know how to handle this, how to navigate the tangled mess of emotions swirling inside him. All he knew was that he wasn’t ready to let her go. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

For now, that was enough.
