Tanwa should’ve known this was a bad idea when Cha, his best friend of five years and co-owner of their little record store, flashed an evil wide grin on his face after Tanwa finally gave in and said, “Dare.”
Honestly, he couldn’t blame anyone else but himself. It was his idea to play Truth or Date after they closed the store, with their usual entourage of hippies nowhere in sight and both men bored out of their minds.
Now they were running through the streets with a recently bought plastic bag full of eggs. The cold air gave Tanwa some clarity—but not enough to stop Cha from picking which house to egg.
They passed quite a few fancy houses before Cha finally stopped in front of a big property. It was similarly sized to the others, but this one looked classically fancy, with its full metal gates and lush surrounding greenery.
For a brief moment, Tanwa was bought back to his own family home—once full of laughter and love, but now just a shell of its former self since his mom passed.
Before he could dwell on the past further, Tanwa turned to Cha, who had been eyeing the house.
“Is this it?”
“Yeah!” Cha grinned, then turned Tanwa’s shoulders toward a window. The occupant seemed to be asleep, given the late hour and lack of light in the room. “Aim it there!”
“Are you sure?” Tanwa asked, thick eyebrows raised.
“Yes!”
“Won’t the glass break?”
“Nah, these fancy houses have thick windows. They don’t break that easily from an egg.”
Well, if that’s the case. Tanwa shrugged, placed the bag by his feet, and took one egg out. Carefully eyeing the window, he drew his arm back and hurled the egg with full force.
Once the egg hit the window, both Tanwa and Cha dove into the thick bushes to hide. Apart from the barking of the neighbor’s dog, there didn’t seem to be any reaction.
“Come on. Throw the next one!”
Tanwa stepped out of the bush once again, grabbed another egg from the bag, mimicked the same movement from before, and threw it once more.
The light in the room briefly turned on, making Tanwa’s heart jump out of his chest, but after few seconds, it turned off again.
When the silence settled once more, Tanwa took another egg and kissed for good luck before throwing it at the window. However, this time, instead of the satisfying thwack of the egg against glass…it crashed into someone’s forehead.
“FUCK!”
“OW!”
Tanwa and the mystery man both yelled at the same time.
And just like that, it seemed like the whole household woke up. Worse, Cha—the asshole of a friend that he was—leapt out of the bushes and ran, leaving Tanwa frozen in the front of the gates as lights lit up the entire house, spotlighting him like a criminal in one of those bad cop drama.
“Hey!”
Tanwa turned toward the front door, which swung open to reveal a very handsome man in silk pajamas, sporting a deep frown on his face and remnants of egg still clinging to his cheek.
“You again?! What is your problem?! I’ve been trying to sleep!”
Tanwa should have been panicking—but how could he, when the literal epitome of beauty just appeared in front of him?
The hippie raked his eyes over the man. “You look really good in silk”, he said with a wink, “But I think you’d look even better without it.”
Tanwa slightly swayed on his feet.
“Are you fucking high?!”
“Only high on you, baby”
“You know that’s—”
The man was about to reply, but someone behind him interrupted. Tanwa looked past him and saw the colonel. He recognized the man from the news.
Oh. Shit.
Tanwa’s blood ran cold. He was currently high, egg-handed and standing in front of the colonel’s house?!
Fuck. If he gets caught, not even his dad could get him out of jail this time.
“Trin, what’s happening?” the colonel asked.
Trin turns to the voice,“Uncle, uh..”
The colonel approached the gate, looking from Tanwa to Trin. “Is this one of your students?”
“Yes! Uh….I-I’m here to see Professor Trin,” Tanwa stammered quickly.
The colonel gave him once over. Tanwa tried his best not to squirm or let it be obvious that he’d been smoking pot for the past hour. “Well? What are you doing here at this late hour?”
Then, the colonel turned back to Trin, “And what’s on your face?”
Tanwa tried to step in to explain, but Trin cut him off.
“It’s nothing, Uncle. I was trying a cream my co-teacher gave me. And this student, he just has a few questions on his Economics paper.“ Trin said smoothly, subtly wiping the egg off his face.
The colonel did not look entirely convinced, but nodded at Trin anyway, “And everything is alright?”
Trin nodded and answered.“Yeah, I can handle this, Uncle. You should go back inside—I don’t want Auntie to wake up without you.”
The colonel nodded again and walked back into the house.
Once he was gone, Tanwa let out a sigh of relief and turned to Trin, “You covered for me.”
“Yeah, well I didn’t want you to get arrested.” Trin replied, the anger in his voice slightly faded. “I’m not evil.”
“Obviously you’re not. Not with that angel face of yours.”
Trin visibly reddened, but Tanwa decided not to push but can’t help the smile that formed on his lips.
The young professor sighed, “Look, just go home, Tanwa. You’re clearly out of your mind.” Trin started to turn back toward the house but Tanwa isn’t ready to let him go just yet.
The other man also noticed the dark circles under Trin’s eyes and suddenly felt guilty for disturbing his sleep.
“I’m sorry!” Tanwa blurted.
“Wha--?”
“I’m sorry!” he repeated. “I’m sorry for waking you up. It was a stupid dare that Cha made me do. I thought it was just some random house, turns out it was yours. And I’m sorry for being annoying since we met, I just—”
“Just?”
“I like you, okay? You’re really beautiful, and I want to get to know you more, that’s why I’ve been... annoying.”
Tanwa continued, because he's obviously not done yet. Maybe confessing while you’re high is a bad idea, “I haven’t felt like this in a long while, so I’m not sure how to do this. I just want to capture your attention…”
“You could’ve just asked me out, you know?” Trin said, anger and annoyance from earlier was completely gone—now replaced by slight amusement and curiosity.
“I could?”
Trin let out a soft laugh, “Yes.”
“Well… if I did, what would you have said?”
Trin tilted his head as if thinking, “Hmm….No.”
Tanwa’s jaw dropped, but Trin laughed again—slightly louder this time.
“Just kidding. You should’ve seen your face!”
Tanwa laughed too. “Well, I didn’t know Professor Trin had a naughty side.”
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Tanwa” Trin winked at Tanwa, a playful smirk on his lips. Tanwa feels his heart beating faster. Oh god, this man is so beautiful.
“And I’m looking forward to know more..” Tanwa replied. He stepped closer and placed a hand on top of Trin’s where it rested on the gate. “Will you go on a date with me, Trin? For real this time.”
Trin smiled. “If you could remember this conversation tomorrow, then yes. I’ll go on a date with you.”
“Trust me. I definitely will.” Tanwa winked.
After a few seconds of admiring the gorgeous man in front of him, he added, “I’ll let you head back to bed. I’m really sorry again for the egging—I didn’t know this was your house.”
“It’s fine. Just make it up to me on our date.”
“Oh baby, I will.”
Trin chuckled, and Tanwa silently vowed—right then and there—that he’d coax out more smiles and laughter from that man even if it was the last thing he did.
“I think an angel earns its wings whenever you laugh.”
Trin laughed again, “You’re ridicoulous. Just go home!”
“Okay okay” Tanwa said. Then, he deciding to risk it all, he leaned forward to placed a small peck on Trin’s cheek, “Night Trin!”
And before Trin replied, Tanwa started to ran but he was still able to hear the other man’s shocked—but soft—reply:
“Good night, Tanwa.”
~
Once he’s back at the shop, Tanwa opened the door and saw Cha smoking another joint.
“You asshole! You knew that was Trin’s house, didn’t you?!”
“Heeeeeeeyyyyy Tanwa~ you’re back!”
“You know I was almost got caught by his colonel uncle! Good thing he covered for me.”
“Really? That’s nice!”
“You did that on purpose!”
“My friend, I’m just tired of listening to you moon over that handsome man.” Cha said as he puffed out a smoke, So… it ended well, right?”
Tanwa smiled, “I asked him out.”
“And?”
“He said yes.”
“YEEEEEEEEEEE! That’s how you do it!”
Tanwa laughed and playfully shoved Cha. “Come on, let’s celebrate.”
“Actually, I’m gonna head to bed. I still have to think about where to take my future husband on our first date.”
Cha laughed, still sprawled like a starfish on one of the beanbags “Fine. Leave me, now that you found your soulmate!”
Tanwa laughed as he headed towards his room.
Once inside, he took out a red square of paper and started to fold an origami heart—intending to give it to its rightful owner now that he had finally found him.
