Messy Meet Up

Summary:

Mira has a meeting, today.

Notes:

Hey guys, my first fic for the KPop Demon Hunters fandom! Just a short little one-shot! Enjoy!

TW: homophobia, emotional manipulation, and past child abuse

Work Text:

Mira was the first to wake up. She, Rumi, and Zoey had all fallen asleep with their arms and legs tangled in each other. They hadn’t been doing anything risqué; this just tends to happen whenever they fall asleep in the same bed.

Rumi was in the center, as she usually was. Zoey was to her right, while Mira was to her left. This made it rather easy for Mira to slip out of Rumi’s grasp, thankful that the half-demoness responded by wrapping her arms around Zoey. Mira smiled at the image, even snapping a pic with her phone, before she made her way to the kitchen to grab some breakfast.

Mira rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she padded through their kitchen. She wanted to make something for Rumi and Zoey, but when she reached the fridge and saw the calendar, a date was circled, with words written on it.

“Meeting with Myeong and Min.”

Mira’s entire mood dropped. She had a mind kind enough for her to forget about the day for a few minutes, even though this meeting is the reason she woke up early in the first place. With the day soured, she grabbed the milk from the fridge, cereal from the pantry, and a bowl from the cabinet. After pouring her milk and cereal into the bowl, she didn’t start eating, realizing too late she had lost her appetite.

Mira sat there, staring at her soggy cereal for what felt like seconds. She realized it was much longer than that when she heard an adorable yawn that could only come from Rumi. Sure enough, Rumi, followed by a groggy Zoey, walked into the kitchen. Zoey sat next to Mira, barely acknowledging her. She was never a morning person.

“Morning.” Rumi kissed Mira on the cheek.

“Morning.” Mira was able to smile.

“So, what’s up?” Rumi asked. “It’s not like you to leave us in bed like that.”

Mira’s smile fell. “I had forgotten to.”

“Forgotten what?”

Mira pointed to the calendar. Rumi walked over to it, checked the date, and her mood dropped.

“Right…” Rumi said, dejectedly. “Your parents…”

Zoey let out a groan and her head slammed onto the table. She didn’t like mornings and that news made it even worse.

“You guys…you guys don’t have to come with me,” Mira assured. “I can do this on my own.”

“You can,” Rumi sat beside Mira, placing her hand on Mira’s cheek, “but you’re not going to.”

Mira smiled and snuggled her cheek against Rumi’s hand. “Thanks.”

“Don’t thank us, yet,” Rumi said. “Now let’s get some coffee into Zoey.”

The location Mira’s parents wanted to meet wasn’t anywhere public. Good for HUNTR/X, they didn’t have to disguise themselves much, especially when they can get their discreetly using their Demon Hunting training. The location was Naksan Park, a place Rumi already felt terrible revisiting due to the memories of Jinu, which was usually very quiet in the early mornings or late nights, outside of the old woman who hands out bracelets to couples. Fortunately, she, and no one else was around today. Unfortunately, neither were Mira’s parents.

“Set the time and date and they’re late,” Mira growled.

Rumi winced.

“She wants to meet and she’s late?” Jinu spoke, indignantly.

Rumi smacked herself. Mira needed her, she could mourn later.

“Whoa, save the smacking for when Mira’s parents get here,” Zoey advised. “I mean…if they get here.”

“We can leave whenever you like,” Rumi assured Mira.

Mira checked her phone. “I’ll give them another minute.”

“It’s good you learned patience.”

Mira let out a growl, closing her eyes to keep her cool. “Took you long enough.”

Rumi and Zoey turned to see Mira’s parents. They were wearing their usual attire, a flashy suit and dress, respectively, and her father had a disapproving scowl that Mira had grown accustomed to her whole life.

“Min.” Mira got between her parents, Rumi and Zoey. “Myeong.”

“Mom and Dad,” Myeong corrected, condescendingly. “Didn’t that tutor we spent quite a lot of money on teach you anything?”

“Oh, already getting to the guilt tripping?” Mira asked, mocking excitement. “Yes, please tell more about all the superficial shit you bought me made up for all the straight shit you threw my way.”

“I-” Myeong began, but Min grabbed his shoulder.

“Please,” Min spoke.

Myeong clamped up.

“Mira, we don’t want to fight,” Min pleaded.

“All evidence to the contrary,” Mira snarked.

“We want to reconnect.”

“Do you?” Mira cocked an eyebrow.

“Yes, we’ve missed you,” Min said, sadly. “We realized we were wrong to force what we wanted on you. We came to beg for your forgiveness.”

Mira didn’t buy it for a second. Min talked all this “we, we, we”, yet her father was looking away with an annoyed look on his face throughout her whole speech.

“Good try,” Mira snarked. “Still just as manipulative as you always were, Min. If Myeong wasn’t here I might’ve bought it.”

Min turned to Myeong, giving him a dirty look for not even trying. He noticeably paled at his screw up, the first emotion he showed since he arrived.

“What do you two really need?” Mira asked, leaning her shoulder against the Fortress Wall of Seoul.

Min and Myeong didn’t speak.

“Come on, out with it,” Mira demanded. “I might just give it to you if you fess up now.”

“We need money,” Min whispered.

“There it is.” Mira slow clapped. “See? You can be honest.”

“Don’t you disrespect us!” Myeong scolded. “We raised you.”

Mira didn’t even dignify Myeong with a response. “So what do two need money for?”

Once again, they clamped up.

“Myeong gambled again, didn’t he?” Mira guessed. “Really blew it this time, eh?”

“Why are you doing this to us?!” Myeong began, enraged. “We, your parents, come seeking your help and you mock us?!”

“That means yes,” Mira explained to Rumi and Zoey.

Rumi and Zoey had crossed their arms, clearly unimpressed with Mira’s parents.

“What are they doing here, anyway?!” Myeong shouted, not happy with being judged at all.

“When you set up this little family reunions you never said I couldn’t bring anyone,” Mira answered. “What does it matter if they’re here or not?”

“I don’t like them here!”

“When have you liked anything that wasn’t exactly what you wanted?” Mira asked, bitterly. “When have either of you?”

“Both of you, stop!” Min pleaded. “Yes, your father gambled the family’s money.”

“And you came crawling to your problem child?” Mira cocked an eyebrow. “What about Myung?”

“He hasn’t spoken to us since he moved out,” Min admitted.

“Smarter man than me,” Mira chuckled, bitterly. “I never should’ve come here.”

“So you’re not going to help us?!” Min asked horrified.

“Last I checked, giving money to a gambling addict never helped anyone.”

“You ungrateful little brat!” Myeong completely gave in to rage. “We gave you everything you ever wanted! Wealth, a roof over your head, tutors! What didn’t we provide that could cause you to treat us like this?!”

“How about the freedom to make my own choices?” Mira asked, rhetorically. “How about love, support, compassion, and understanding when I wanted to do something that wasn’t exactly what you wanted?”

“We just wanted what was best for you,” Min justified. “We’re your parents.”

“You two keep saying that!” Mira finally snapped. “Over and over, we raised you, we’re your parents, and all that utter horseshit!”

“We are!” Myeong shouted.

“Then you don’t remember the voicemail you sent me?!” Mira bellowed back.

Myeong was taken aback. “Voicemail?”

“You don’t remember?” Mira bitterly pulled out her phone. “I did.”

With a few taps on her phone’s screen, Mira played the voicemail she had saved after all these years.

“Mira, I don’t even know what to say to you,” Myeong began on the voicemail. “A K-Pop Idol? Are you serious? Your mother and I set you up for a law degree and this is what you do to us? Come home, now. You have a month to realize this little game you’re playing isn’t going to get you anywhere in life. If a month passes? I don’t care. I don’t care if your nonexistent career goes up in smoke and you are left broke and penniless on the street. You don’t call us, again. We are no longer your parents.”

Myeong stared off into space as Min stared daggers through him.

“You had forgotten?” Mira looked at Myeong and Min in disgust. “Have you grown so accustomed to spitting bile at me that you forget something so hurtful?”

“M-Mira…” Min begged.

“Do you know how many sleepless nights I spent listening to this?!” Mira shouted. “Do you know how much I considered giving up on my dream to go back to the both of you because, despite how horrible you could be, you were both my parents and I didn’t want to lose you?”

“Mira please,” Min begged.

“Hell, I would even play it years later.” Mira looked at the saved message. “Whenever I was having a shitty day and felt like punishing myself, I’d play this to make myself feel worse.”

Rumi and Zoey shared a shocked look at that. Neither of them knew Mira would do something like that to herself.

“Thankfully, these two helped me with that.” Mira got between Rumi and Zoey, wrapping her arms around them both. “They made me realize I don’t need either of you, anymore.”

“I-I didn’t know he sent that message!” Min shouted in desperation. “Please, he gambled away our money, at least help me!”

“What?!” Myeong looked at Min, shocked by the betrayal.

“There’s the throwing under the bus,” Mira noted in bitter recognition. “I’ll tell you what, Min. Let’s see how you react to this and I’ll see what I can do.”

“React to what…?” Min asked, confused.

“Just watch.” Mira winked.

Min’s face contorted into one of horror as Mira took Rumi by the face and kissed her. The make-out session went on for minutes on end before she did the same to Zoey.

“So, what do you say?”

“Wha…what was that?!” Min snapped, hatred overriding self-preservation. “You disgusting…how are you supposed to continue our bloodline?! Our legacy?!”

“Myung’s got that covered,” Mira snarked. “I mean, if he has kids.”

“Don’t you see?!” Min shouted. “This is what we were trying to protect you from! This lifestyle has led to a degradation of your morals and if you continue down this path I fear you’ll only continue to spiral down a…”

Mira began to block out Min’s self-righteous little speech, a technique she’s learned since childhood. To shut her up, she pulled some won from her pocket.

“H-How much is that?!” Min asked, desperately.

“Find out.” Mira threw the won over the Fortress Wall of Seoul.

Without another word, Myeong and Min rushed passed HUNTR/X to collect as much of the thrown won as they could.

“Come on, girls,” Mira spoke coldly. “Let’s go home.”

As Mira walked away, the mask finally slipped off. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but Rumi wiped them away. Zoey wrapped her arms around Mira, her face getting so close to Mira’s that their cheeks touched.

“We got you,” Rumi assured.

“We always do,” Zoey finished. “You know that, right?”

“Of course.” Mira smiled through her tears.

Mira will move past this. With their help, she will always be able to get back up when life knocks her down. With that knowledge, she finally deleted her father’s message.
