It was all so strange, still. Walking to Bobby’s apartment. Knocking at the door instead of using his demon powers to simply appear inside. And yet as inconvenient as it was, it felt so blessedly human. He waited, shifting his weight to the balls of his feet and back, over and over again.
His ready smile faltered when the door opened. Bobby stood in his pajamas even though it was well into the afternoon, hair mussed and deep dark undereyes revealing a lack of sleep. He clearly wasn’t expecting Seong, quickly finger-combing his hair back in a rushed, nervous manner. “Oh. It’s you, I wasn’t-”
“I did call.” Seong held up his phone, and Bobby looked away. “I got worried when I never heard from you. Your girls say it’s been a few days too. I- everyone is just a little concerned.”
Bobby still wouldn’t look at him, shifting awkwardly in the doorway before stepping back. “You should come in.”
The living room was dark, curtains still drawn. A crumpled blanket lay over the couch, tv murmuring on a low volume. Seong awkwardly took a seat, Bobby following suit across from him.
Trying for the gentle approach, Seong said softly, “You seem upset.”
“Yes, well, finding out that everyone you love has been lying to your face will do that.” Bobby retorted, uncharacteristically dry, and ran his hands over his face. “Sorry, I- it’s fine. I’m fine.”
“Clearly, you are not.” Seong searched Bobby’s features, trying to find the right thing to say. “I want to know how you are feeling.”
Bobby stood and started pacing back and forth. “How I’m feeling?”
He laughed, a borderline hysterical sound with zero humor. “Why does it matter now how I feel?”
Seong’s heart dropped into his stomach. “Bobby-”
“My girls lied to me. For years! They tell me they trust me and then never mentioned the most important and dangerous thing they do- they could have been killed! They said it was to protect me but my job is supposed to be looking out for them not the other way around! And I’m-I’m- what would I do? Just carry on having no idea what happened to them? They’re my whole life, it would destroy me. And now it’s all smiles and carrying on as if nothing happened.”
Bobby was breathing hard, yanking at his hair as he kept pacing. Seong badly wanted to gently pull his hands away, calm him, but instead he waited.
Bobby’s pacing stuttered to a halt. “And the worst part of it is I feel like I’m not allowed to feel anything about this. Everyone is moving on as if the world didn’t drop out from under them, and I’m stuck feeling so horrible. I’m angry, hurt, and sad, and-”
He paused, and faced Seong again directly. “You already explained so much to me, but if I ask something would you be honest with me?”
“Of course.” Seong nodded solemnly.
“Do you still want me? Now that there’s nothing to gain?”
Seong was quick to close the gap between them and pull Bobby into his arms.
“Bobby, you made me feel human again. You have every right to be upset with what happened, with me- but my feelings for you are real. I love you and that isn’t going to change.”
As soon as he heard those words, Bobby practically melted into Seong’s chest. “Thank you.”
“No, I should thank you.” Seong gently grasped Bobby’s chin, raising his face to look him in the eye. “You saved me.”
Bobby let out a deep sigh and leaned into Seong’s kiss. “I still wish I could have done more, if I’d known.”
“But you didn’t, and that is not your fault.” Seong replied.
Hours later the two ended up back on the couch, Seong on his back with Bobby cuddled on top of him. Seong’s fingers carded through Bobby’s hair, and the shorter man relaxed for the first time in what must have been days.
“Could I convince you to call your girls? They really were worried.”
Bobby snuggled his face more firmly into Seong’s pecs. “Mmm. I will in the morning.”
It was indeed close to evening, Seong realized. It would be fine to delay the call just a little. “How are you feeling?”
“A lot better.” Bobby yawned. “I think I just needed to get everything off my chest. I mean- I still have to work through some stuff in my head, but it’s not so overwhelming anymore.”
“Good. Get some sleep for now, alright?” He felt Bobby nod against his chest.
“As long as you stay.”
Seong kissed Bobby’s forehead and adjusted to hold the smaller man closer.
“I’m not going anywhere, I promise.”
