Summary:
Apple gets woken up by Darling's kiss
Chapter Text
Apple sat up gasping, the chunk of apple which had been stuck in her throat dislodged itself. She took in deep breaths of air, her lungs burned from the change. When Apple's lungs settled full of air again she laid back down, her heart beat and breathing taking a second to settle. She barely registered the fact that she had almost choked to death, she was trying not to think about it.
The glass felt cold against her skin, flowers packed around her made her nose twitch. Apple loved nature and not just because of her destiny. It was one of the things that felt like an escape to her, singing to the birds, walking in the forest. It gave her a break from everything she felt she had to do. But Apple was allergic to roses. She hated it because roses were so beautiful and people bought them for her so often. Not that they ever asked her if she liked roses, just assumed. She always had to throw them out, she never revealed this allergy to anyone. Even Briar and Ashlynn didn't know.
So of course roses would be added to Apple's coffin. No one would ever think that Apple would be allergic to roses, the most perfect flower for the perfect princess. She had kept this secret from everyone even her mother. She knew she would be disappointed if she knew. It was such a small thing yet Apple kept it close to her heart, her secret shame. A metaphor for the crack in her picture perfect image. After all, Apple White was obsessed with following her destiny if she was anything.
It was why she started “dating” Daring. Apple had been dating Daring for basically as long as she could remember. Blondie was right, they were the perfect couple. He was the picture perfect prince and she was Apple White, the future queen, it was a easy match to make. She had their entire life planned out, and Daring followed along. Sure, she didn't feel the things about Daring that Ashlynn described when she talked about her relationship. But at least he knew not to bring her roses. He was also confident enough not to feel bad that nearly every boy in the school relentlessly hit on her. Too obsessed with himself to care that she wasn't obsessed with him.
Apple didn't feel the pull to kiss Daring, or touch him at all. They held hands around school and they hugged or kissed on dates. But it wasn't with excitement, it was just what she was supposed to do. She knew Daring felt the same, Daring was too vain to look at anyone else like he looked at himself. He also knew that Apple was the best way to advance further socially. It was less a relationship that it was a mutually beneficial partnership.
Plus it was her destiny. He was her one true love. He had to be, she had put too much time into making him perfect, into making them perfect for it not to work out!
"Daring, you saved me!" That was the first words Apple said when she woke up from her enchanted sleep. She was elated, she was finally following her destiny, despite all odds. She knew that her and Daring's relationship was not the best lately. He had definitely been going through something that he wasn't telling her and well… she had been going through a lot since she had released the evil queen. Her and Raven's friendship had been struggling and she was beginning to wonder if her destiny was worth all of this pain. Almost all her friends hated her, she had lost almost everyone. There must have been a better way, but she couldn’t see it at the time.
But it was done now. Apple had completed her destiny and she hadn't needed Raven to do it. Both her and Raven had gotten what they wanted, she was sure she could get everyone to come around and forgive her. Before her and Daring's wedding of course, she was so excited! She was getting her happily ever after.
"Umm, no." Daring muttered from the corner. Apple finally had a chance to look around the little woodland cove they had sheltered her in. Daring was no where near enough to have kissed her. He was behind a circle of her friends all gathered around her. Briar, Ashlynn and Raven as well as others stood to one side of her, relief and worry painting their faces. Maybe forgiveness would be easier than she thought. She smiled at all of them. She could care less who her prince was as long as she had her friends with her.
Finally Apple turned her head to see who stood on the other side, which prince it turned out that she was destined to marry after all. It wasn't like she was particularly attached to Daring, he was just another one of the characters in her story. Just like Raven, he could be replaced if he really had to be. They could still be friends, they were probably better suited that way. Both her and Daring were a bit to self-centred for their relationship to work. She could forget about him and focus on her Prince!
"Thank you so much for saving me..." Apple nearly gasped for a second time. Her prince was...
"Hi, Apple. I'm glad you are okay." A bright high voice, greeted her along with waves of long white hair and dazzling blue eyes . Her prince was... Darling Charming?!

Chapter Text
It had been a few weeks since everything went down. It had been a hectic time, what with everyone banding together to defeat the Evil Queen. It was a crazy time, Apple hadn't had much time to consider her destiny at all, let alone what her mother would thing or what Daring or Darling would think. Apple didn't even know what she felt about it. Apple and Raven had just stumbled back into their room, holding each other up tired and tipsy.
They had all huddled into Ashlynn and Briar's room and Briar threw a party like the school had never seen before. With half of the teachers gone and the castle crumbling around them everyone was in desperate need of a pick me up, there was also no one around to stop them from partying. At midnight, Briar made sure to gather up all the younger students and send them off to bed. Then all the of age students stashed together their alcohol and they spent the last few hours getting wasted. As Apple danced, chatted with her friends and loosened up from the pressures of the war and everything that happened, she spotted Darling sitting alone in a corner taking slow sips of something in a plastic cup. She was sitting next to Dexter though the two didn't seem to be taking much. Although Apple didn't know why she kept glancing over to Darling. She hadn't even begun to process anything that had happened in the past few weeks. She knew she was to blame for a lot of it, if not all of it. She knew she was selfish she had a lot of growing to do and she felt so bad for what had almost happened to Raven. She really needed to talk to so many people, including Darling. Darling was the person she really needed to talk to but she was the person Apple wanted to talk to the least. But god as Apple got drunker and drunker as Briar coaxed her into doing more and more shots, as lights swirled around them and people blurred together Darling started to look so good. The light bounced off her hair, blonde like Apple's but so much paler, a blank slate for the array of colours to splash onto. It made Darling look like she was submerged in a rainbow. Her lips were pursed and her arms were crossed as her eyes scanned the crowd. Her eyes landed on Apple and pale blue collided with her, it almost knocked her off balance.
Darling and Apple were so similar, yet so different. Apple had seen Darling but never really looked at her with great interest. She had seen Darling in the hallway, she wasn't in any classes with Darling, as Apple hadn't notice but had recently learnt that Darling stole Dexter's place in prince lessons. Briar had once noted that Apple, Darling and Blondie locks looked similar. As the three blonde haired, blue eyed royals it made sense. Of course Apple paid far more attention to Blondie as supposed to Darling. She was Daring's younger sister and not much else to Apple until recently. Although on the surface they had similar features Darling was so much paler than Apple, she didn't had much colour at all. Her hair was so sapped of colour that it was practically white, her skin glowed in the bright lights sparkling like a mirror, her blue eyes were more of a pale grey, like a raincloud. Darling was effortlessly beautiful, curly hair looking windswept and blowen out no matter the occasion. She had cut it much shorter recently the longest sections falling just under her ears. She didn't wear makeup, just shone like a goddess carved out of marble. Her clothes were pale, for a royal, practical and yet pristine. Whereas Apple was high strung, beautiful in a way that was tied together and fragile. Apple got up early every morning to do her hair and the bows and trinkets that Apple put on required the help of her forest friends. She put off the kind of vibe that Darling just had, she needed to spend hours studying and getting ready to put off the off the cuff perfection. But it took everything out of her to do it. She never let lose. She never told anyone how she felt, all she did was barrel towards her destiny. It was all she did, all she wanted. It made her friends push her away, it made her do stupid things but it was the only thing she had ever done. She was under so much pressure from her mum. She needed to do what she could and get her destiny.
"Apple?" Before Apple could think about it she had made her way over to Darling. She didn't know what she was doing. It was like she was just drawn to Darling.
"Hiiii…" Apple tipped forward, her balance faltering and she considered that she might have had way too much to drink.
"Woah... Careful." Darling grabbed Apple's waist and pulled her closer and placing her next to her on the chair. Apple felt her face flush as she felt the warmth of Darling's hands. They felt slightly rough and very strong despite her small stature. Apple shouldn't really be surprised about it when it made sense with the fact she had been training and being the white knight. But she didn't expect the gentleness accompanied with the strength that made Apple feeling even more weak in the knees. Even when Apple had been positioned next to Darling the hand stayed around her waist. Warmth seeped through her and her face bloomed with red, like the apple's she was named after.
"Are you okay?" Darling's other hand brushed some of Apple's hair out of her face. She must look a mess, yet she couldn't see judgement or distaste in Darling's eyes. She simply looked concerned and the sweet way she was talking made Apple want to melt against her.
"Darling?" Apple grabbed Darling's hand and kept it cupped to her face. She looked up into her eyes, her eye lids fluttering as she looked at Darling. She didn't respond to Darling's question because she didn't really know. She wasn't like dying but she was very drunk and probably shouldn't be speaking to her prince. Oh my grim, Darling was her prince, her handsome prince.
"Yes?" Darling said. Apple couldn't understand what Darling was thinking. She couldn't understand much at this point, she was so dizzy. She felt warmth running through her veins as her head plopped down on Darling's shoulder. She breathed heavily against Darling's neck causing the other girl to shiver. "Apple, hey, what's wrong?"
Darling shifted their positions moving Apple easily like she weighted nothing. Soon those pale grey eyes were fixed on hers. They were the only stable thing in her vision, the concern in them, wide and terrified. It occurred to Apple somewhere in her foggy brain that she should have gone to one of her friends for help instead. This was putting a lot on Darling who despite everything that had happened barely knew her. Yet again she was beginning selfish. But the though was lost amongst the haziness. The bright lights and thumbing beat of the bass reverberated in her chest and made her feel like everything was simply too much. She decided to focus on the two constants in her life right now, those two springtime sky's. The day before rain would break out, the lightest of grey. The hint of a chill and a breeze in the air. Then they were gone and the warmth of Darling's body was gone. She had hardly noticed it was there yet when it left she missed it sorely. Like it was the only thing protecting her from the world.
It wasn't long before they were back, but in that time Apple slumped back against the sofa Darling was sitting on, eyes shut against the sensations. A soft murmur alerted her to Darling's arrival, another lower yet similar voice responded but Apple wasn't paying attention to either of the voices but the little dip in the sofa when Darling sat down. Apple longed for the warmth back and lurched forward. Awkwardly and clumsily she managed to get her arms around her. Darling let out a little gasp and something cool splashed onto Apple's thigh. Most of it got on Darling though. Apple opened her eyes, she had enough of a sense to know to apologise and opened her mouth to do just that when something plastic was pressed against her lips. She prodded at the intrusion with her tongue and discovered it was the rim of a cup. She opened her mouth wider and a gentle hand on the back of her head coaxed her head backwards a little so she could drink the liquid she soon discovered to be water.
"There we go. You needed that, didn't you?" Darling chuckled slightly and it was a beautiful sound, deep and breathy. Apple wanted to hear it again and again forever.
"Thank you." She said instead of asking Darling to laugh again so she could remember it better. That would be weird the last semblance of her sensible brain told her.
"Of course. Want me to walk you home? Or Dexter could take..."
Apple was conflicted. She wanted to go with Darling so badly. She wanted Darling's lips against hers again, it less desperate circumstances. She wanted to pull Darling into her bed and make her stay all night so she could have the warmth of her all night. It such a strong urge but she also knew a little better now that the water was sober her up that it was a good idea. She has no idea whether her destiny is influencing her feelings towards Darling or whether it is the alcohol or what Darling thinks of all this. She just needs more time to think about it. But then she sees Raven approaching and she realises there is no time. She can't explain the situation to anyone else. All she wants is more time with Darling to sort things out.
"Nooo, Raven." Apple whined when Raven was only a few steps away from them. She wanted to usher Raven away, had a little longer to ponder her decisions maybe sober up a bit. But Darling must have taken that as her answer when it was far from it.
"Oh okay. Can you take Apple home?" Darling gently helped Apple stand up, physically handing her to Raven.
"Nooo." Apple whined gripping Darling while Raven almost as drunk as Apple, having every right to be after she had to deal with her mother. Her purple hair was dishevelled and her dress hung off one shoulder. Her eyes were a little glazed over yet she stood fine up her self and when Apple nearly wobbled into her as Darling extracted her arms from Apple's grip she stood fine, even stabilising Apple. Apple wanted to complain about how much of a light weight she herself was when she was almost sure Raven had had almost twice the amount she had.
"Let's go to bed." Raven's voice slurred a little and her speak broke and cracked like her mother's mirror.
"Ok..." Apple pressed her face into her friends neck and lamented the fact that she smelled like violets and coffee instead of iron, whiskey and oranges.
