Chapter Text

“Well, no duh, Hefty made a fool of himself. You were there,” Coco rolled her eyes and sat up, “You walk into a room and his IQ drops to 5. He’s in love with you.”

Smurfette stared up at the darkness of her ceiling, the moonlight filtering in through the curtains.

“He is not!” Smurfette paused and thought, “Wait…”

“Oh my god,” Coco gasped, “you didn’t know!?”

“There-” Smurfette blinked, mouth wide open, “-He… He likes me?”

She turned onto one side, staring at the flower on her vanity table.

“How in the hell have you not noticed?” Coco shook her head, “Well, it looks like your IQ drops to 4 when he’s in a room, if you have never noticed.”

“Ok…Ok,” Smurfette waved her hands, “wow… Really? How long?”

“Since I arrived,” Coco replied as she moved to sit closer to the edge, “Dude, he’s crushed on you since we were kids.”

She let out a huff and rolled back onto her back, crossing her arms over her stomach. It had been a few years, she honestly couldn’t remember how many, since that conversation. It played in her mind, keeping her up at night and giving her ideas. Ideas that she didn’t know she could have. She was older now, Hefty was too; they had both matured. Yet he still followed her around like he did when they were kids, that grin that she began to realize was him being lovesick, those soft eyes that she learned were just for her.

Smurfette blinked again and looked as if her mind was blown, “But…”

“Okay, we are unpacking this later.” Coco patted her shoulder and pulled her up, “For now, I have some boys to tease!”

Oh, smurf this. Smurfette sat up quickly, glancing at Coco’s slumbering form on the windowsill. It had been six years since they had first met, and Coco barely fit on the windowsill like she had when they were kids. She was curled in the fetal position, blanket pulled up around her shoulders, and a sleep mask plastered on her face. Smurfette felt a twinge of annoyance. How dare she sleep so soundly when Smurfette was having an internal crisis?

“Coco!” Smurfette whispered to her. When she saw Coco twitching, she groaned and then spoke louder: “Coco!”

Coco remained asleep, the only sound coming from her being soft mumbles, “Five… minutes…”

“Oh, for smurf’s sake.” Smurfette grabbed a pillow and launched it at Coco. The pillow bounced off Coco’s head and landed at her feet.

Coco finally jumped and moved her sleepmask off her eyes, “wha- Smurfette?”

“Oh, good, you're awake.” Smurfette smiled, and Coco groaned.

“I am now,” she said. Coco sat up, took Smurfette’s pillow with her, and crawled into Smurfette’s bed. “What?”

“I need to talk to you,” Smurfette whispered as Coco leaned on her shoulder.

“And it couldn’t wait till morning?” Coco yawned, “What’s up?”

“I like Hefty,” Smurfette admitted, and Coco blinked slowly.

“Yeah, he's a great dude, real strong.” Coco’s eyes were still glazed with sleep, and Smurfette sighed, “Fantastic friend. This couldn’t wait until the morning?”

“Coco,” Smurfette’s voice was shaky, and Coco glanced up at her, “I like Hefty.”

“Oh.” Coco blinked and nodded slowly, “Like… like-like, or-”

“I think I love him, Coco,” Smurfette admitted in the quiet room.

“Oh.” Coco remained silent as she processed. She remained quiet for a few agonizing minutes before Smurfette broke.

“Oh? That’s all you have to say?” Smurfette scoffed, and Coco could hear tears in her voice. You were the one who put the idea in my head!”

“Okay, woah.” Coco sat up and took Smurfette's head in her hands. Breathe. It’s going to be okay.”

“How could you possibly know that?” Smurfette asked, and Coco smiled, wiping her tears away.

“Because,” Coco booped her nose, “you two were all but made for each other. I know in my heart you guys will work it out.”

Smurfette nodded and gave a shaky smile, “Thanks, Cc.”

Coco smiled and let go of her face, “And as for the ‘oh’ comment, I woke up five minutes ago, I am not coherent. And how did I put the idea in your head?”

“You were the one who told me he loved me!” Smurfette accused.

“When?” Coco furrowed her brows, scanning her memories for anything.

“After the villages combined.” Smurfette reminded, “Do you not remember?”

“Huh…” Coco shrugged, “I guess I did. Have you been thinking about that all these years?”

Smurfette blushed and looked away, “Smurf it.”

“Awwww,” Coco teased, poking her cheek, “My baby’s had a crushhhh”

“Oh, Smurf up!” Smurfette groaned, batting her hand away. “One day you’re going to have a crush and I am going to tease you so bad about it!”

“Yeah, but not today,” Coco smiled. “Now, let’s get some sleep. You can go confess to your beau tomorrow.”

“Should I tell him?” Smurfette asked as the two lay down, facing each other on the small bed. Smurfette knew Coco wasn’t going to move now that she was comfortable, so she resigned herself to a night of cuddling to stay on the small bed.

“I mean,” Coco shrugged, “if you tell him y’all can date. If not, it’s just a sad game of cat and mouse.”

Smurfette stared at her pillow before she glanced up to look in Coco’s eyes, “Do you think he still… wants me?”

“Why wouldn’t he?” Coco looked offended on Smurfette's behalf.

“I mean, we’re both older now-“ Smurfette shrugged, and Coco cut her off.

“If he doesn’t love you because you’ve grown, he never loved you in the first place. I don’t think he’s that shallow, lord knows he has his flaws too.” Coco snuggled closer to Smurfette, laying her head on her chest. “But if he is that shallow, don’t worry.”

“Why?” Smurfette asked as she settled her arm around Coco. Despite her appearance, Coco was a cuddly sleeper. “Why shouldn’t I worry?”

“Because if he hurts you in any way, I’ll kill him.” Coco smiled contentedly as she drifted off to sleep, ignoring Smurfette's light slap on her arm.

Chapter Text

The next morning, Smurfette stared at her closet, a debate clearly going on in her head. Coco watched, unamused, from the bed. " The worst mistake I ever made was taking you to the human world to get more outfits.”

“Oh, shush,” Smurfette moved some dresses around as she searched for a jacket. “It’s fall and it’s cold.”

Eventually, Smurfette settled on a white dress and a simple jacket. Coco rolled her eyes, “Wow, that ain’t like your everyday look at all. It was so worth the thirty minutes you stared at the clothes.”

“Oh shut it,” Smurfette grumbled. She felt like now was one of the few times the human swears would be appropriate, “You’re such a bitch.”

“I’m your bitch though,” Coco smiled before pausing, “Wait no-”

“Oh, really?” Smurfette laughed, “Will you listen to me?”

“I never said I was a good bitch,” Coco chuckled. “Anyway, what are you planning on doing today? Hefty?”

“Oh, would you-” Smurfette blushed furiously, and Coco cackled.

“You are too easy to rile up!” Coco squealed as Smurfette threw her nightgown at her. “Rude! I am so proud of you for using a human swear and not smurf, though, it makes me so happy.”

Smurfette groaned as Coco faked wiping a tear from her eye and pulled her dress on, “You are a terrible influence.”

“Naturally,” Coco replied with a wink, “And what would you do without me?”

“Be sane,” Smurfette muttered as she began brushing her hair.

“Hardly,” Coco rolled to lie on her stomach and placed her chin on her hands, “You gonna talk to him?”

Smurfette was silent as she stared in the mirror and continued brushing, “I think so. I need to tell him at least how I feel.”

Coco smiled, “I think it’ll work out.”

Smurfette raised a brow and put her brush down, “Wow, you’re being optimistic. You must have a lot of faith in this.”

“Obviously,” Coco beamed, and Smurfette rolled her eyes as she rolled out of bed.

The next hour or so, Smurfette felt as if she were going to explode. Her nerves were shot, and she could barely stomach breakfast, let alone talk to anyone. Coco distracted most of the other Smurfs, engaging in conversations so quickly they could barely question Smurfette at all. After breakfast was cleared, Coco nudged Smurfette and gave her a nod. Smurfette saw Hefty chatting with Brainy and Clumsy and shook her head, “I changed my mind, this is too nerve-wracking.”

“No, it's not,” Coco assured her, grabbed Smurfette’s arm, and pulled her over.

“Coco!” Smurfette hissed, “He’s busy!”

“You leave the boys to me,” Coco said, patting Smurfette on the back as she pushed her forward. Smurfette stumbled and glared at Coco. She gave her a wink and walked in between Brainy and Clumsy, “Excuse me, Hefty.”

“Oh, hey, girls,” Hefty replied, slightly confused as Coco wrapped her arms around Brainy and Clumsy’s shoulders.

“Don’t mind us,” Coco smiled, “I need to borrow these two. Love you Smurfette!”

Smurfette glared at Coco as she walked away, dragging Brainy and Clumsy with her. Clumsy looked at Coco, confused, “What just happened?”

“What just happened is me being the world’s best sister,” Coco assured him, “Even if she doesn’t see it that way.”

“I usually never say this, but,” Brainy adjusted his glasses, “I have no clue what is going on.”

Coco laughed and patted Brainy’s head, “Don’t worry about it.”

Hefty glanced at Smurfette with a soft smile, “What’s up?”

Smurfette blinked and took a deep breath, “Can we talk? Outside of the village?”

“Of course!” Hefty smiled, and Smurfette tried to smile back. He gave her a concerned look, and the two began walking outside. Smurfette stared at all the leaves changing colors as she went. Fall was truly upon them as the wind cut through the leaves, leaving a few fluttering to the ground. After a few minutes of walking and plenty of distance away from Nosey Smurf and anyone else who would be eavesdropping, Smurfette stopped underneath a tree.

Smurfette stood in front of Hefty, her hands in her pockets as they stared at each other underneath the yellow leaves. He gazed softly at her, “What did you need to talk about?”

“I…” Smurfette paused, unsure where to begin. She took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around herself. “I need to tell you something, but I don’t know how you’ll respond.”

“Hey…” Hefty gently placed a hand on her shoulder, “Whatever it is, I’m here for you! I’m your friend, right?”

Smurfette looked into his eyes and saw trust shining back at her. She swallowed, “I don’t think I want to be friends.”

Hurt flashed in Hefty’s eyes, and Smurfette swore at herself, “What?”

“Not-” Smurfette groaned, “That came out wrong! I meant… I… I like you, Hefty.”

Relief flooded Hefty’s eyes, and he gave a grin, “I like you too. You’re one of my closest friends, and I would do anything for you.”

Smurfette stared at him for a moment before she licked her lips, “Oh, smurf it.”

“What-” Hefty could barely breathe a response out before Smurfette’s hands found his jacket lapels.

Smurfette reached forward, wrapping her arms around Hefty’s neck and pulling him into a kiss. He gasped, and she felt his arms slowly wrap around her waist. Their lips slotted together perfectly, and she tilted her head as he deepened the kiss. She squeezed him tight, and she felt a hand reach up and tangle in her hair. Time seemed to slow as they kissed and everything felt right in the world. She slowly pulled away from the kiss, and the two stared at each other for a moment. She licked her lips and saw his eyes tracking the movement. “I…I love you, Hefty. I-”

Her next words were stolen from her as his lips reclaimed her. Hefty pulled her closer, kissing her deeply and tangling his hand back in her hair. She let out a little gasp, and he swallowed it down. She gently prodded his lips with her tongue, and she moaned softly as he allowed entry. Her hands wandered slightly, tracing the muscles she could always see but never allowed herself to feel. Eventually, the two, reluctantly, pulled away for air, a small string of saliva connecting their lips. Hefty gently brushed Smurfette’s slightly ruffled hair out of her face. He stared at her with awe and gently traced down her face with his hand. “Smurf… You’re so beautiful…”

“I take it…” Smurfette took a moment to catch her breath, “I take it you still like me?”

“I never stopped liking you… loving you…” Hefty admitted, his voice barely a whisper, “How did you know?”

“Someone told me and I started noticing the signs,” Smurfette murmured, kissing the palm of his hand where it rested beside her face, “I just… needed time.”

“And now?” Hefty asked, and Smurfette glanced up and smiled softly at him.

“I think I’m ready to try if you are.” She promised, and he grinned.

“I would like that a lot,” Hefty sealed the deal with a kiss, this one not as intense as the others. Something softer, a promise of what was to come. They would have their issues, what couple didn’t, but as the leaves fell around them, they felt confident with their decision. Whatever would happen, they could face it. Together.
