Chapter 1: The Prologue

Chapter Text

Natsuki Subaru was currently in a strange situation. Granted, the whole day had been quite strange for a number of reasons.

He had arrived in the watergate city of Priestella with his camp in the hopes of getting a new crystal for his lady. Everything was going well, despite crashing the negotiations over the crystal and subsequently getting a mana stone thrown at him, he was enjoying the local area. Until a bunch of archbishops appeared and started wreaking havoc across Priestella.

Subaru, with the help of his allies were able to repel the archbishops and even kill the strongest of them all; Regulus Corneas. It was quite easy to deal with him after Subaru realized the connection between his name and his authority. After killing the dreaded archbishop, freeing his wives, and connecting with the other camps, he decided to check through Regulus’ possessions with the help of Emilia, Beatrice and Reinhard. Which led to the situation he was currently stuck in:

“I’m sorry I must have misheard you, could you repeat what you just said?” said a very flustered Subaru.

“Natsuki Subaru you are now legally married to 54 women”

 “HUH?!”

A few moments earlier…

“I’m surprised by how much stuff this guy had”, said Subaru as he looked through the office of the former archbishop

“It is quite a lot. I’m reeeaally surprised by how much he owned.”, stated the half-elf as she observed the paintings on the wall.

“Betty isn’t surprised in fact, the witch cult has been pillaging countless villages and cities for a very long time, it is no wonder they would have riches, I suppose”, Beatrice murmured, as she stared at her contractor.

“It is unfortunate that greed was able to cause so much destruction before he was killed” stated Reinhard. “If only I was better”, he whispered to himself.

Beatrice, while shifting through some papers on the desk, suddenly called out “I found something I suppose!”  As the group crowded around the desk, Beatrice handed a sheet of paper to Reinhard.

“So what is it, Rein?”, asked Subaru “It’s a note from greed, my friend” Reinhard replied, “It says ‘To whoever is reading this, How dare you trample on my rights, I have been nothing but satisfied-”

He was cut off by a very frustrated great spirit; “Just get to the point, I suppose”

“Forgive me honorable great spirit, the note is the will of Regulus Corneas, ‘in the impossible event that someone manages to kill me, Regulus Corneas, all of my possessions will go to whoever is credited with killing me.’ Reinhard replied.

“Does that mean we all get his stuff?” asked Subaru.

“I believe that would be the case, my friend,” replied Reinhard. “However I believe you should take my share of Regulus’ commodities, Subaru.”

“WHAT! Reinhard, it was you who killed that bastard, you should be taking my share! Emilia-tan help me out here” replied Subaru.

“Actually, I believe you should take my share of Regulus’ items as well Subaru, it was you who found out his weakness, so you deserve a reward!”, the half-elf happily exclaimed.

“I agree with lady Emilia, without you, we would not have been able to defeat greed”, Reinhard quickly added.

‘I didn’t do anything useful, you both did the work, I only used my knowledge of stars, you should be taking my shares, I don’t deserve it’, thought Subaru

Beatrice, noticing her contractor's grip tightening on her hand, quickly added “It’s only natural my contractor gets the reward he rightfully deserves.”

Cornered by his cute spirit companion, Subaru conceded; “Okay, I’ll take ownership of Regulus’ items”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN I’M MARRIED TO 54 WOMEN!” Subaru angrily shouted at the government official he had submitted Regulus’ will to.

The short, pale-skinned man behind the counter replied, “ Among the various objects and locations granted to you by this will, the will also passes the legally recognized matrimony of his wives onto you.”

Subaru was about to retort, before being interrupted. “Divorce is an option.”

Subaru internally thanked his lucky stars

“However it will take a long time before such a request could be processed. Currently the kingdom is too busy checking for cultists around Lugunica because of the recent failure in stopping the cultists entering Priestella. Furthermore, due to the sheer number of wives you are currently married to, it would take a long time to process such a request.”

Subaru was too shocked to reply to what he had heard, but another person wasn’t

“Does that mean me and Subaru are also married?” inquired a blushing half-elf.

“Yes lady Emilia, according to this document, you are legally considered to be among those married to Natsuki Subaru.”

All of the thoughts flowing into Subaru’s brain had immediately ceased

”Betty will get so many future contractors from Subaru’s offspring, I suppose!” exclaimed Beatrice

Life was not going right for Natsuki Subaru.

Chapter Text

“You’re my wife now, 184, you do not need anyone else” said the man standing before her.

He had no eye-catching features, golden eyes,  a modest face, that wasn’t particularly attractive or unattractive, and wore white clothing, with not a single stain on it.

“As my wife, you are not allowed to show any facial-emotion. Fail to obey and you will be punished.”

The smoky scent of ash and earth filled her nostrils as she heard what the man said.

drip

drip

drip

The man then started to walk away. “Follow me 184.”

She wanted to cry, to scream, to run away from that man.

Cough cough

However she was snapped out of her thoughts by the sounds of coughing.

“Sylphy, go with him.”

Sylphy looked towards the figure lying a few feet away from her, it was a man, somewhere in his late 50s, covered in blood, with blonde hair and a thick moustache. He was missing his left leg, in its place was a gory stump that was leaking out blood at an alarming rate.

“Why should I?!” Sylphy screamed.

Cough “Because if you don’t, you will die with the rest of us” said the dying man.

“I’d rather die than go with him!” Sylphy screamed at the man

“Please, you’re my daughter Syphy, my little princess, I couldn’t rest in peace without knowing that you were able to live on”

Sylphy wanted to argue, to rebuke his words, but she couldn’t.

“I will go with that wretched man, only to honour your wish, father”

Cough cough  “Always remember, I love you Sylphy. One day that man will get his due.” He said in his dying breath.

She said nothing, as she followed the man who called himself Regulus Corneas.

Sylphy, no, 184, would leave the burning village behind her, and move forward in the hopes of seeing Regulus Corneas’ death, in which she would rejoice in.

She had lost all hope in ever seeing his death, the man she lovelessly called Husband-sama. After talking with the other wives of her Husband-sama, she found out he never needed to eat or drink anything. He never aged and never got dirty.

She watched as the wives who defied him or failed to uphold his commands died. They always died with a smile, it wasn’t the fake painted-on smile you’d see on an experienced merchant, rather it was a genuine joy in death, in being freed from their wretched husband-sama’s influence. She wondered if she could ever smile like that again. It became an unsaid rule amongst Regulus’ wives, if they were to die, they would do it with a smile, to mock the archbishop. She accepted that one day she would be killed by her Husband-sama, that she would never see the death of the man who killed her family and her village.

That was until she met a half-elf, one with silver hair and amethyst eyes, a perfect description of the witch if you had asked anyone else, her name was Emilia, but that was irrelevant, here she was only number 79.

She kept spouting off about her knight, ‘Natsuki Subaru’, and how he would save her. As if anyone could beat Husband-sama. Not even the sword saint would be able to beat him, after all.

They did it. They beat him. Natsuki Subaru had found out his weakness, that monster, her former Husband-sama’s weakness. Emilia-sama was right.

What followed was nothing short of the greatest happiness in Sylphy’s life. She vowed that she would serve Emilia for her entire life.

She was guided along with the other former wives into a safe zone.

It was later that she, along with the rest of the wives, got the news about her new Husband-sama.

The former wives of Regulus Corneas were collected into a large hall in the former mansion owned by Regulus Corneas.

“Emilia-sama held Natsuki Subaru in a high regard and said he was trustworthy” said Sylphy

“What if he’s like Regulus?” asked a blue-haired woman named Matilda

“Maybe he only saved us to take us as his wives next.” suggested a fiery-haired woman named Eleanor.

“What if he forces us to stay with him, like our former Husband-sama?” asked a timid woman named Helen

Sylphy wanted to rebuke their words, if Emilia-sama held him in high regard, then he would be trustworthy, but she realised that the other wives were simply anxious of their new husband after what the previous one was like.

Suddenly the door opened, and Natsuki Subaru, Emilia and Beatrice entered the hall.

They got up on the make-shift stage that was stationed in front of the wives, while the wives stared at the trio.

Natsuki Subaru got close to the metia and started speaking.

“Hello, I am Natsuki Subaru, and as you may have heard, I’m legally considered your husband.” His voice boomed across the hall due to the metia.

Many of the women in the crowd looked anxious hearing this, as they waited for him to continue.

“I don’t expect you to like me at all, nor do I want to force any of you to like me.” said Subaru into the metia as he looked at the crowd of women.

Many women were confused by this, others visibly relaxed at the information.

“Unfortunately, we cannot get divorced for a while, at the moment the government is busy with monitoring witch cult activities in official positions and large cities, so it will not be currently possible. However, I understand that many of you don't have a source of income or a place to stay.”

He took a deep breath.

“Which is why I want to offer all of you equal shares of Regulus’ former wealth.”

Many of the women in the crowd were taken by surprise. ‘What did they do to deserve that? He was the one who risked his life to deal with Regulus.”

“In addition to this, I wanted to offer you this mansion as a place to stay, there should be many rooms, so you can live here, free of charge.”

“As for jobs, we are hiring maids in the Mathers and Miload mansions, where we will also offer food and a place to stay.”

The women in the crowd were gobsmacked, ‘Free food, money, lodgings and job opportunities? It was surprisingly lenient, was he even getting anything out of this arrangement?’

“I hope to get along with you all, my name is Natsuki Subaru, knight of the royal candidate, Emilia!” He said as he struck a pose where he pointed one arm to the sky.

“So please tell me your names.” he said with a sincere smile on his face.

The women were frozen, he had wanted to know their names, but why? He already admitted to being okay with divorce anyway, why would he care about them?

Emilia was smiling seeing her knight address the crowd of women in front of him. A faint blush coloured her cheeks as she remembered when he asked her for her name after helping her against the bowel hunter. ‘Why do I feel so warm and fuzzy inside remembering that?’ she thought internally.

Suddenly, a lone woman shot up, “My name is Sylphy Elmart, it’s nice to meet you Natsuki Subaru.” said Sylphy.

Subaru’s grin only seemed to become wider. “Nice to meet you too, Sylphy! So, who’s next?”

If you enjoyed this chapter, leave a kudos.

I read a lot of your comments and let me say, some of you guessed the direction this fanfiction will be going teehee.

Also, Syplhy’s backstory is kinda made up, we do know regulus kills the families and villages of his wives once he marries them, but the specifics was my own interpretation, please forgive me for the heavy start. Chapter 3: EX: THE WILL OF GREED

Summary:

Why did Regulus give his possessions to the man who killed him?
Capella loves rage baiting.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The will of Regulus Corneas allowed that whoever killed him would receive all of his possessions. One might ask; Why would the archbishop of Greed make such a will?

Before the battle of Priestella, in a secluded cult hideout.

“Such a proposition is a violation of my rights as a man living an utterly satisfied existence. To suggest that someone take away the possessions that I, Regulus Coreneas, have worked hard to collect and maintain over my life as a satisfied bei-”

He was cut off by a shrill voice.

“GYAAAH! DO YOU EVER SHUT UP YOU INSOLENT MEATBAG! This lovely lady just offered you a small wager. You should be thankful that I, the great, lovable, amazing, Capella-sama, is even talking to you, you lust-filled sack of meat!” replied a blonde haired woman in skimpy clothes.

“Fine, repeat your wager, you insufferable whore of a woman.” exclaimed a frustrated Regulus. Truthfully, he would have started arguing with the woman seated across him like usual. However, being the most satisfied and generous being in existence, he decided to let the woman reiterate her wager.

“It’s simple, a coin toss, whoever loses has to do something the other one says. If I win, you have to write a will that says whoever kills you gets all that you own.” exclaimed the archbishop of lust, as she held the gold coin in front of his face.

“Hmm. A perfectly satisfied existence such as mine does not require to take part in such farces to get what I desire. However, I will accept your wager, for a generous being such as myself will definitely win” replied Regulus as looked into the eyes of Capella.

“Alright meatbag, heads, I win, tails, you win.” said Capella as she flipped the coin.

As the coin landed, she closed her palm on the top coin, before opening it to reveal that it landed on heads.

“KYAHAHAHAHA! Seems like you better get to writing Regulus-chan ~” she smirked as she teased Regulus.

He clicked his tongue in disgust, before replying, “It isn’t like anyone could kill me anyway, I am the strongest, most satisfied man in the world.” He shortly left the room in a seemingly normal fashion, but his clenched fists betrayed his real emotions.

Once Capella was sure he left, she began snickering to herself, “That meatbag will be so angry while writing that.”

She held the coin in her hands, and fiddled with it, before it suddenly transformed into a small child with orange hair and a scared expression. The boy quickly vomited the contents of his stomach onto the floor. Capella looked at the boy with a tired expression, before it twisted into a wide grin. “Did you learn your lesson?” she sweetly asked The boy. The boy quickly nodded in response. “Never, ever disobey Mama. NOW LEAVE!” she shouted at the end. The boy quickly ran away.

Regulus wasn’t aware that Capella had changed the faces of the ‘coin’ when she put her palm over the coin. Why did she go through the trouble of doing all of this? Simply to piss off the archbishop of greed, Regulus Corneas.

Chapter Text

In The City Of Priestella.

Otto Suwen was currently lying on his back, with bandages wrapped over his legs. Next to him was his adopted brother, Garfiel.

A short, petite, brunette woman was talking with a tall green-haired man a few feet away from the pair.

“Have you heard? Natsuki Subaru recently got married to like 50 women, it's being talked about all over Priestella.” said the woman.

“Natsuki Subaru? You mean the hero? It’s no wonder he would have women flocking to him, he deserves it for all he’s done.” replied the man.

Overhearing the conversation between the two, Otto decided to call out to the lady,

“Umm, excuse me ma’am? I couldn’t help but hear your conversation; what are the rumours circulating in Priestella?” Otto asked the nurse.

“Ah, you're in the same camp as him aren’t you? There are rumours  all over Priestella, our hero is getting married to around 50 women!” revealed the brunette

‘Maybe I could get close to the hero too.’ she pondered in her mind.

“Ya hear that Brotto? Cap’n ‘s gettin’ all th’ gals!” exclaimed the excited tiger boy lying on the bed next to Otto’s bed.

Garf, I highly doubt that Natsuki-san would be able to get that many wives, especially in such a short time. Sure, he’s popular after his deeds in Priestella, but 50 wives is just not possible for him.” replied a tired Otto to the tiger boy.

Garfiel, chest puffed out, confidently smirked and exclaimed, “Ya just don’t get th’ greatness of cap’n, Brotto! ‘f anyone could do it, it’d be cap’n!”

Otto sighed while closing his eyes, “You really look up to Natsuki-san, don’t you, Garf?”

“ ’fcourse my ‘mazing self looks up to cap’n! He’s th’ great’st hero in th’ world!” he haughtily exclaimed in response.

A nurse entered the room. “Otto-san, Natsuki Subaru is here to see you; would you like me to allow him to enter?”

‘Natsuki-san? Shouldn’t he be going on a journey to the watchtower? Why is he here?’ thought Otto

“Yes, please allow him in.” Otto replied formally.

Subaru entered the room.

“Hi Otto! Hi Garf!” Subaru cheerily said.

“Hello Natsuki-san.” replied Otto

“Hiya cap’n!” Garfiel exclaimed.

“Forgive me Natsuki-san, but why are you here? Shouldn’t you be on a journey to the Pleiades watchtower?” asked a curious Otto.

“That’s what I’m here to discuss about Otto.” he said seriously.

“The journey to the Pleiades watchtower has to be delayed”

Otto, hearing this, asked “ Forgive me for asking Natsuki-san, but why is it being delayed? Can you elaborate?”

“There’s been some complications…” replied Subaru, as he murmured the last word.

“And what are these complications, Natsuki-san?” asked Otto.

“You remember how we started looking through Regulus’ stuff?” asked Subaru.

Otto, patience slowly running out, replied “yes, and?”

Subaru, starting to look more uncomfortable, added “He had a will that transferred all that he owns to the person who was credited with killing him, and Emilia and Reinhard decided I should take their shares.”

“That’s great for you Natsuki-san, but why would that delay the expedition for the watchtower?”, questioned Otto

“Among the possessions he owned, the union with his wives were also passed onto the person who killed him, which means,

I’m married to 54 wives, including Emilia-tan” finished an awkward, and red-faced Subaru.

“THA’S MY CAP’N!” shouted an enthusiastic Garfiel.

As Garfiel started cackling and congratulating Subaru, Otto had only one thought in mind

I need a drink…’

“So you’re currently married to 54 wives, including our liege, and can’t get divorced for a long time because the government is too busy to process the request?” summarised Otto.

“Pretty much.” confirmed the scary-eyed teen

“Cap’n yer n’ od-damned legend!” The young tiger boy had stars in his eyes as he excitedly praised Subaru.

“HEY! I never wanted any of this!” shouted an indignant Subaru.

“But ya got married to 54 women an’way. Yer the great’st hero my ’mazing self knows cap’n!” exclaimed Garfiel

Subaru groaned in annoyance, before turning his attention to Otto.

“Atleast, this means we have more time to prepare an expedition to the watchtower.” Subaru said in an attempt to pull attention off himself.

“This is surely an odd situation Natsuki-san, but I doubt you came here only to announce that, so what else did you come here for?”

Subaru looked sternly at Otto before replying, “I promised to give each of the wives equal shares of Regulus’ wealth, along with a good chunk of his possessions.”

‘Of course you would do something so kind Natsuki-san, you wouldn’t do anything less.’ Otto internally praised.

Subaru continued, “But I realised that it would be almost impossible to transfer all his items and wealth by myself, so I am going to have a meeting with Anastasia-san to make a deal to get her help with the transport.”

Otto visibly tensed at the mention of Anastasia.

‘Anastasia-san is a very good merchant. Some say she can make someone give up their life savings and have them still feel like they won.’

Otto, still visibly tensed, asked “Are you sure Natsuki-san? She can be quite the shrewd merchant.”

Subaru, visibly relaxed, replied  “ I am aware of her way of making deals, which is why I wanted to ask you for advice.”

“Alright Natsuki-san, I’ll help.” replied Otto

Anastasia Hoshin was currently sitting in her office. She had just received word that Natsuki Subaru wanted to discuss a deal with her.

Truth be told, Anastasia Hoshin didn’t know what to think about Natsuki Subaru. She had tried looking into him, but none of her sources could ever find anything about him before an appearance near a random merchant selling appas. This wouldn’t have bothered her too much. However, Natsuki Subaru was no ordinary man, he had seemed quite foolish at the start of the selection. In her opinion, she thought he meant well, but definitely didn’t do the right thing back then. You would’ve thought that was the end, but instead, Natsuki Subaru had, in less than a week from the initial humiliation he faced at the capitol, created a three way alliance between three camps, and planned and subjugated the white whale and the archbishop of sloth. That alone was enough to create tales all over Lugunica about ‘the commoner who killed sloth’. But, just a little later, Natsuki Subaru was knighted by his lady and the Emilia camp had announced that they had slain the Great Rabbit, another one of the three great mabeasts. Even though the sage council couldn’t confirm whether this happened, since there was no corpse they could check, they had accepted that Natsuki Subaru and his newly contracted Great spirit would be credited with the defeat if there were no sightings in the next 10 years. Despite the fact that the death of the great mabeast wasn’t confirmed, many immediately believed the story due to the track record he possessed. Even the greatest of doubters would not be able to deny his involvement in fending off the witch cult in Priestella. His efforts gave him the moniker, The hero of Priestella. Many priestellans saw him as a hero on par with the sword saint. Children started to look up to him, and many adults trusted him.

However, Anastasia Hoshin was most interested in where Natsuki Subaru came from. He had characteristics from all the 4 great nations. When she introduced daisukiyaki and sushi to the camps, Subaru ,unlike the rest, seemed to have prior knowledge, he even looked nostalgic eating them. As she watched Natsuki Subaru, she realised that there was something different about him compared to the rest of the people she had ever met. Natsuki Subaru seemed to have some connection to Alec Hoshin, the greatest merchant in history.

One thought flashed through Anastasia’s mind, ‘Could he be able to translate Hoshin’s texts?’

“You good, Ana-Bo?” asked a large furry wolf Demi-human.

“Yes, I’m fine.” replied Anastasia.

She decided to push the idea to the back of her head.

Julius, the finest of knights, was currently standing outside his liege’s office. He was currently waiting for Natsuki Subaru, someone he deeply cared about (and someone he considered a close friend).

Tip-tap

Tip-tap

Tip-tap

Julius heard footsteps.

Seconds later, Natsuki Subaru appeared before Julius.

Subaru clicked his tongue, “What’re you standing out here for, you prick?”

Julius smiled, “I’m here to welcome you Subaru.”

“Well, I’m here now. So lets just get on with it” replied Subaru

If one was to watch the two interact, they would believe that they had some animosity between them, but the truth was that this had become a sort of back and forth between the two.

“Subaru, before you talk with my lady, I wanted to thank you.”, Julius said in a somber tone.

Subaru, turning his head to look in Julius’ eyes, asked “What for?”

“Thank you for helping me before gluttony.” replied Julius.

Subaru’s eyes widened, before he remembered the conversation they had before Julius went off to fight Gluttony in Priestella.

Before the fight against gluttony

“Are you ready to face Gluttony?” asked Subaru.

Julius, poised straight, replied, “Yes, I am ready Subaru.”

Subaru, looking in Julius’ golden eyes, said “You better be, Joshua can’t have his brother getting too hurt.”

Confusion flashed across Julius’ face

“Who is Joshua, Subaru?” questioned Julius.

Subaru’s eyes went wide, as his heartbeat quickened.

“I can assure you Subaru, I do not have a brother.” said Julius

“Julius, please tell me you're joking.” said Subaru seriously.

“I would not joke in such a serious situation.” said Julius

Subaru, stone-faced, said, “Julius, I have something to tell you, and it isn’t going to be good news.”

Present Day

Julius, looking at Subaru, said “ Without you Subaru, I would not have known about my brother, and because of you, I was able to deal with the archbishop of gluttony more effectively.”

Subaru, looking pensive, muttered, “I didn’t do much though.”

Julius, overhearing Subaru’s muttering, replied “Subaru, do not belittle yourself, without your help, I would not have found my brother, and I am almost certain that I would have lost my name if I was not aware that Gluttony knew my name prior to the encounter.”

Subaru, slightly uncomfortable To the praise, replied “Thanks Julius.”

As the duo entered the room, they were greeted by the sight of Anastasia sitting at the desk, and Ricardo standing off to the side.

“Greetings Natsuki-San”

“Heya Subaru!”

“Hello, Anastasia-San. Hi Ricardo!” replied Subaru

Subaru, looking over to Ricardo, noticed that one of the wolfman’s hands had been replaced by a hook.

“That’s a cool looking hook Ricardo-San!” exclaimed Subaru

Ricardo’s face seemed to instantly brighten, as he exclaimed, “I know right? The thing looks awesome! It’s not very practical, but it does look awesome!”

Subaru, hearing about the lack of practicality in the hook, said, “Maybe I can have a word with Roswaal about getting you a better prosthetic?”

“Nah, it's fine”, Ricardo nonchalantly replied.

‘I need to get closer to the Emilia camp if I want to interact more with Natsuki-San.’  thought Anastasia.

“Actually, we’ll hold ya to that, Natsuki-San.”, replied Anastasia.

“Now let’s talk business, why have you called this meeting, Natsuki-San?”

“Alright, and I think we have a deal, Hoshin enterprises will take care of transport of all items, and help you in selling the unwanted stock, like paintings and furniture.” concluded the mauve-haired merchant.

“Alright, I’ll take my leave. Thank you for the deal, Anastasia-San.” said Subaru.

“No need to thank me, Natsuki-San. I’m just doing business.” replied Anastasia.

As he bid farewell to Julius and Ricardo, and left the room, Anastasia had a thought.

‘I think I finally know what to think about Natsuki-San. He is sweet, smart and a good negotiator, but most of all…

She thought about the boy’s offer to her foster father.

He’s a boy with a big heart.

Notes:

Writing Garf was interesting because of his dialogue, I needed to get a whole sheet that summarized his speech patterns to write him lol. Hopefully you liked this chapter.

Ana is normal here because she stayed near Julius in Priestella to support him after finding out about what happened with Joshua. This made it so she wasn't trapped in her od.
