Chapter Text
Buck stared down at the test on the counter. She couldn’t believe it. She was always so careful but now, now she’s pregnant and the dad isn’t in the same state anymore. Eddie left to go back to Texas, to be with his son.
It happened after Eddie’s going away dinner. They went back to Eddie’s and one thing led to another and they ended up in bed together. It meant everything to her but at the end of the day Chris was priority.
Six weeks later, here she was, heartbroken with a bun in the oven. Granted her and Eddie still talk but she didn’t know how she was gonna tell him this. She grabbed her phone and called her sister.
“Hey Buck, I was just thinking of you.” Maddie said answering on the first ring.
“Maddie,” Buck cried into the phone.
“What happened, Eve?” Maddie asked fully alert as soon as she heard her sister crying.
“I fucked up. I fucked up so bad. He’s going to hate me.”
“Who’s going to hate you?”
“Eddie!”
“Oh Buck, that’s physically impossible.”
“But I just made things so much more complicated.” Buck cried.
“What do you mean?”
“I need you, can you come over?”
“I’m already on my way.”
“Thanks, Mads.”
“Anytime, I’ll be there soon.”
“K.”
“About 20 minutes later, Maddie was walking into Eddie’s -no- Buck’s place. Buck had been pacing the living room, hand gravitating toward her stomach.
“I’m here, Eve, I’m here.” She said bringing her little sister in for a hug. “Now, tell me what’s going on.”
“I’m pregnant. It’s Eddie’s. And he’s back in Texas to work on his relationship with Christopher. I don’t know what to do.” Maddie shushed her and they sat on the couch.
Buck cuddled up to her sister, calming down as she rubbed her back as Buck felt her nephew kicking up a storm. In just a matter of months she’ll feel it to but she was terrified. She never told anyone, but right before she moved to Los Angeles she had a miscarriage at 16 weeks gestation. She didn’t know if she wanted to try again or not.
“Oh, Eve. Everything will work out.” Maddie told her.
“How do you know?”
“Because you’ve got me.” Maddie made Buck look at her. “Now, what do you want to do. You know you have options.” Just the thought made Buck shake her head violently.
“No, I don’t want to do that, but I’m scared. I don’t think I can handle it if I lose another one.”
“What? When?” Maddie asked heartbroken for her sister that she kept this to herself.
“Almost 10 years ago. I lost a baby at 16 weeks. His little heart just stopped beating. I never got any answers. I was living in Peru at the time. I’m scared of it happening again, Mads.” Maddie just pulled her closer.
“I can’t promise you that it won’t happen. But I can promise to be here.” Maddie said wiping at her tears. So, here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna make an appointment then we’ll figure out what to tell Eddie.”
“But… he needs to focus on Chris!”
“Ev, he needs to know about this one too. He’d want to know. Plus, I need to yell at him. He should’ve known to us protection.”
“We did; I’m even on the pill.” Maddie blinked then laughed.
“Damn. Well, let’s see if I can get you an appointment with my OB.”
“That’ll be nice. And I’ll tell him but I think I would like to wait until after the appointment so I can show him medical proof and not just a couple sticks that I peed on.”
“That sounds like a reasonable plan.”
Maddie pulled up her doctor’s information and sat with Buck as she made her appointment. The earliest that she could get in would be in three weeks. The next step would be to tell Bobby. She’s in a dangerous line of work. It won’t be long until she won’t be able to do much. Buck’s next thought was her brother-in-law.
“Do you think you can keep it from Chim for now? I don’t want him telling Eddie before I’m ready for that.”
“Of course. Unlike my husband, I can keep a secret. But don’t wait to long.”
“It won’t be. I promise.” Buck held up her pinkie and Maddie wrapped her around Buck’s before squealing.
“We’re pregnant at the same time.”
“I have a whole pregnancy to go. You’re almost 6 months. I’ll be going through the tough months while you’re getting ready to deliver.”
“True. Earlier, you mentioned a miscarriage. Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I didn’t want you to hurt as well, I was hurting enough as it was.”
“Who was the father?”
“Connor.”
“The guy who came and asked for an egg donation?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m surprised you did it.” Buck just smiled. “Wait, but they had a baby.” Maddie was so confused.
“After I talked with Connor I went and talked with Kameron. She didn’t know about us or the baby. After we talked, she decided to use a donor egg. One that matched my features so Connor doesn’t know.”
“It was pretty shitty of him to ask after your history.”
“I know, Kameron thought so too. They still send me updates but I have no connection to their baby, other then he would’ve been my baby’s brother.”
“That must have been scary to go through that by yourself and I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you.”
“You’re here now, that’s what matters, especially with Eddie 800 miles away.”
“He’ll be back. I just know it.” Buck just nodded and cuddled into her sister.
The next morning found Buck at the station earlier to talk with Bobby. She didn’t really want many people to know eye but her Captain did need to know. She knocked on the door and waited until Bobby called enter.
“Buck, I wasn’t expecting you here yet. What can I do for you?” Bobby asked looking up at her from his desk.
“I need to talk to you about going on light duty.” That stunned Bobby, he wasn’t expecting that but time off.
“What’s going on?”
“I found out yesterday, I’m pregnant. I can’t exactly be running into burning buildings right now.” Bobby stood and brought her in for a tight hug.
“That is the most exciting news. Who’s the dad? Do I need to have a talk with him?”
“I do know who the Dad is, but I need to talk with him first. Which I’m planning to do after my first appointment.”
“I’m glad you thought this through. And what about everyone else. They are gonna be wondering why you’re on light duty.”
“I know they will be. I’ll tell them after I tell the dad. I don’t want someone else to tell him but me.” Bobby nodded, more clues added as to who the dad could be. He pulled out the necessary paperwork for her.
“I’ll keep this here, but you’ll need to get this paperwork filled out by your doctor so we can get the FMLA paperwork filled out.” Buck nodded as Bobby put it in a folder with her name on it and put it in the top drawer.
“Thanks, Bobby.”
“Anytime, Buck.” Bobby said with a smile as she ducked out to change into her uniform.
The day of her appointment arrived and she was sitting in the waiting tapping her leg as she filled out the paperwork. Maddie came with her, as she had her appointment the same day. In fact, she had called and asked if they could be seen together.
“It’s okay to be nervous.” Maddie reminded her.
“I know, I’m just curious as to why they drew blood first.”
“To see where the HcG levels were at so they can kind of guess how far along you are now.”
“We already know I’m 9 weeks. I’ve been tracking it.” Maddie smiled as the nurse popped open the door.
“Buckley and Han.” The sisters stood together and they followed the nurse to their room.
They each took a chair as the nurse handed Buck a cup to pee in. Their vitals were taken; Buck went and peed in the cup and they waited for the doctor.
“How do I tell Eddie about the baby?” Buck asked her.
“I’m sure you’ll find a way. Don’t you guys talk all the time?”
“We do, I guess I’m just nervous about his reaction.”
“And that is perfectly valid. When are you guys supposed to talk?” Maddie asked her.
“Tonight. Can you be there when I tell him?”
“Of course!” Maddie said holding her pinkie out. Buck wrapped her around the offered finger as they smiled. They looked up and over at the door as there was a knock announcing the arrival of the doctor.
“Hello, so I’m Dr. Jackson.” She seemed friendly with a bright smile with her hair tied back in a bun. “I’m familiar with Maddie. You must be her sister Eve.”
“Yeah, but most people call me Buck.”
“Well, Buck, according to the blood work you are indeed pregnant. With these numbers I suspect late first trimester.” She said humming. “So, let’s calculate a due date.”
“Well, the only date that fits is March 14th. That’s when I was last sexually active.” Dr. Jackson hummed and pulled up something on her computer.
“So, by my calculations, you’ll be due December 5th.”
“Aw, a Christmas baby.” Maddie cooed squeezing her hand.
“Close to it anyway. Now, I need some background information. Including this one how many pregnancies have you had?”
“Um, 2.” Buck sighed looking at her sister. “My first one ended in a miscarriage at 16 weeks.” Dr. Jackson looked over at her.
“What happened, anything genetically?”
“I honestly don’t know. I went in for my appointment, and they couldn’t find the heartbeat.”
“Where was this?” she asked. “I can probably get the records.”
“I’m not sure if you can. It was in Peru. About 10 years ago.”
“I can put feelers out there. Now, because of your history, in about a week you can do genetic testing, if you would like.”
“Yes, please. I don’t know if it’s genetic or not, but the father, his son has CP. I’m pretty sure his was caused by his getting caught in the birth canal but I read it can be genetic too. I’m sure this will give us a peace of mind.”
“Of course. CP can be caused by a genetic mutation but most often it’s a birth injury or soon after birth injury.” She made notes then looked up at her. “Is the father around?”
“He recently moved back to Texas after his son moved in with his parents for a while. He’s trying to rebuild his trust… I’m not sure why I told you all that.” Buck said rubbing the back of her head. “We’re still really close and talk all the time. We weren’t trying, it just kinda happened.”
“Were you on birth control or did you use a condom?”
“We had both.” The doctor’s eyebrows shot up. “I know, it’s crazy.”
“Super crazy.”
“Do you have any other questions for me?”
“Not at the moment. But I’m sure I’ll have more at the next appointment.”
“I look forward to it.” She smiled. “Maddie, want to hop up so we can take a listen to baby.”
The rest of the appointment went by fast and soon they were back at the house. Eddie should be calling soon. It wasn’t too long after they sat down that Eddie called.
“Hey, Ed’s.” Buck said opening up the facetime call.
“Hey Buck and Maddie. I could’ve called later if you had plans with your sister. Not that I’m not happy to see you, Maddie.” Eddie said from his living room.
“She’s actually here for moral support.” Buck told him.
“Moral support? I don’t understand.”
“Maybe you should be sitting down.” Maddie told him.
“Oh, God. Are you sick? Is Bobby?” Buck could tell that he was starting to spiral.
“Ed’s breathe, I’m fine, no one is sick. Just, um, it’s just not something we were expecting is all.”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you remember what happened after your going away dinner?” Eddie blushed and nodded. “I know we used protection, but I’m pregnant. 9 weeks along to be exact.” Buck saw as Eddie paled drastically.
“But, but, we used a condom and you’re on the pill.” Eddie put his head down and Buck could see that he was starting to be a little overwhelmed. “I can’t believe this happened again.”
“I know, if Buck hadn’t said that you had used protection I would’ve called and chewed you out sooner.” Maddie told him.
“God, I need to talk with Chris. We’ll be back, Eve, I promise. I don’t want to miss anything more.” He rubbed a hand over his face but Buck knew as soon as they were off the phone he’ll be freaking out. “How are you feeling? Any morning sickness?”
“Nausea every morning like clockwork. But it clears up an hour or two after I wake up.”
“Good, I’m glad.” Eddie then looked directly at Buck. “Eve, were coming back, I promise.” Tears sprang up in her eyes and she nodded. Words failing her right now. “Listen, I’m gonna go, I gotta go talk with Chris. I’ll call you later, k.”
“Okay, let me know how it goes.”
“Will do, wish me luck.”
“Good luck.” Eddie smiled, he looked like he wanted to say something more but didn’t and finished the call.
“Well, I think that went really well. Do you want to come over?”
“Actually, I think I need a nap.” Maddie smiled and nodded before kissing the top of her head and left the house.
Buck went to her room and crawled into bed for a well-deserved nap. Curling up in bed with Eddie’s old t-shirt wrapped around the pillow. She fell right to sleep.
