Chapter Text
Michael woke up to the sound of his alarm ringing. He groaned and slapped his hand against his night stand until he hit his phone and knocked it onto the ground. He groaned louder and covered his ears with his pillow before giving up and reaching for his phone as he sat up. He was having such a good dream a few moments ago, one that really had him going, judging by the tent in his boxers. He turns off his alarm and chucked it beside him as he put his head in his hands.
“Fuck! It was the same dream again.” Michael muttered to himself. The dream he was referring to was about Dennis Whitaker. Dennis was a new fourth year medical student working at PTMC, and he's only been there for a week, but Michael couldn't stop thinking about him. It started when he first laid eyes on him.
The boy was small, definitely smaller than average, but he looked cute and oh so cuddly. His hair was fluffy, and Michael just wanted to ruffle it and feel how soft it was, but he held himself back. He doesn’t know why his heart flutters when he’s around Dennis, but something draws him close, and keeps him next to Dennis. He wasn’t aware how touchy he was with the poor boy until Dana mentioned it after their shift on Dennis’s first day.
I see you found yourself a favorite. You really are close with Whitaker.
Michael never found himself more embarrassed than that moment. He saw the smirk that was on Dana’s face, and he brushed it off with him trying to be friendly. Dana didn’t believe it one bit, but she dropped it and let him off the hook, though he had the ‘we’ll talk about this later look’ on her face as she left. Michael has been avoiding Dana’s questioning since.
Back to the dreams, they started three days ago. Michael had found Dennis with his butt out as he traded out his soaked scrubs for some fresh ones, and ever since he’s been having the same dream. During his dream, Dennis is on his knees, naked and staring at Michael with a pleading look. Michael was always sitting in front of him, staring at him with hungry eyes, and with his hard cock out and pointing at Dennis’s lips.
Dennis would always lean forward and wrap his lips around the tip of his cock, and Michael would grab onto Dennis’s hair and gently thrust it into his mouth. Dennis’s moans would vibrate throughout his cock, and he would always wake up before he could even come. The image of Dennis looking blissful as his mouth was stuffed with his cock always left Michael with the thought of wanting it to actually happen. This time though, his dream was a bit different.
Michael doesn’t really talk in his dreams, but this time he did. When Dennis had wrapped his tongue around the base of Michael’s cock and gently sucked it down, Michael whispered ‘that’s it baby’ softly and ran his hand through Dennis’s hair. It felt right to praise Dennis for his hard work, and the pet name slid out of his mouth naturally, like he was destined to call Dennis that. Michael was snapped out of his thoughts as his second alarm went off. He groaned tiredly and stood up from his bed.
“Fucking dumbass alarm.” Michael cursed out and he turned off his alarm before walking to the bathroom to deal with his boner, and to get ready for work. He just hopes everything goes smoothly, but his hope is like a one in a millionth chance, especially since he works in the most chaotic part of a hospital, the ER.
—————
Michael walked into the ER with his head held high and with confidence backing up his tired expression. He nodded at Dana, who waved at him, and he passed by Dr. Shen, who was packing up and getting ready to head home. He looked exhausted, but he still had a smile on his face, and his friendly and young attitude was still there.
“Great, you’re here to take over. I’ve already charted everyone we took in last night, and be aware of the patient in Central 7, she’s a real flirty gal, but she’s still kick your ass.” Dr. Shen said, and he showed a dark bruise that was on his arm, after he had to restrain the patient because she was being aggressive towards them. Michael winced in sympathy and patted Shen on the back.
“Noted, that’s for that warning. Now go home, before you try to take another patient.” Michael says softly, and Dr. Shen chuckles as he slings his bag over his shoulder. “Hold the fort down well, later Dr. Robby.” Shen says and he throws up a peace sign as he walks through the ER doors, leaving the ER in the hands of Michael.
—————
By 7, everyone was surrounding Michael as he stood in front of the board. His arms were crossed, and he was looking at everyone in front of him. He saw how Victoria was tapping her feet against the floor, how Trinity had her arms crossed and was looking through the list of patients to see who needs a more extreme treatment, and he saw how Mel was fiddling with her hands nervously as she waited for the meeting to be over.
He almost didn’t see Dennis, almost being the key word. His eyes were scanning the group just so he could find Dennis, and his eyes eventually landed on the small boy. The boy was in his blue scrubs, wirh his stethoscope sticking out of his left pocket, and his pen on his right pocket. Michael couldn't help but stare at the boy for a little bit.
He took in the way Dennis was rubbing his thumb against his palm in a soothing motion, or how his eyes scanned the room, looking at the different rooms that were waiting to be seen. He also saw the dark bags underneath Dennis’s eyes, like he hasn’t been getting any sleep. Michael frowned.
“What’s causing him to lose sleep?” Michael mumbled to himself, and he was so caught up in his thoughts, that Dana had to nudge him to get his attention. Michael snapped out of his thoughts and looked towards Dana, who had a smirk on her face and was motioning for him to speak, and at least start the meeting before the ER becomes busy. Michael turns back towards everyone and he clears his throat.
“Right, I hope you’re all well rested and ready. The same rules apply like any other day. Interns, please consult with a resident or me if you want to diagnose or prescribe a patient anything, try not to get hurt while treating anyone, be care with sharp objects (he looks towards Trinity, who rolls her eyes), and last but not least, save some lives and keep yourself hydrated. Any questions?” Michael asks, and he looks around to see if anyone looks confused, or if they have a question.
Dennis looks like he wants to say something, but he doesn’t, and even though Michael would have called him out, he’d rather Dennis be comfortable enough to talk to him instead of embarrassing him in front of everyone.
“Okay then, go save some lives.” Michael says in and everyone disperses and goes to find themselves a patient. Michael stands there for a minute and watches how Dennis looks around before walking towards the south side of the ER. He doesn’t move, waiting to see where Dennis was putting himself, and he almost followed Dennis if it wasn’t for the trauma alarm going off.
Level 1 trauma. Car Collision ETA 2 minutes
“Dana, where’s that trauma going?” Michael asks as he snaps into his working mode and turns towards Dana, who has her pager in her hand and is pointing towards the north side.
“Trauma room 3.” Dana calls out and Michael nods and moves quickly towards the room. Trinity pops up as soon as he opens the door, and he starts commanding her and Frank on things they should set up. The gurney is wheeled into the room a minute later, and Michael is already listing off test to run as a nurse cuts off the patient’s anime shirt.
—————-
Michael hasn’t rested once since his shift started, and he hasn’t seen Dennis around a lot, which was worrying him, but also dampening his mood. Hes had five traumas in the last 3 hours, and two of them were from the same accident. He’s been running on coffee, that was far too cold to be drinking, and the thought of seeing Dennis on his next round of patients. It was funny, because he’s never been so desperate to see someone since hes been working in the ER. Even his ex wife didn’t have that effect on him, and that was saying something.
Michael let out his third, tired sigh in two minutes while leaning against the nurses station. He was chatting with Dana, mainly making jokes and talking about patients to discharge, when Dennis walked up to him. Michael didn’t notice to poor boy at first, and if it wasn’t for Dana looking behind his shoulder, he probably wouldn’t have noticed. Michael turns his body slightly as he faces Dennis, and he couldn’t help but sigh out in relief as he finally sees Dennis’s face again. It’s been too long for him, and that may sound exaggerated, but Michael was Dennis deprived.
“Um, Dr. Robby…could you help me with this patient of mine?” Dennis asks nervously, and he shuffles a bit and doesn’t look Michael in the eye.
“Sure Whitaker, what do you have?” Michael asks, and nobody mentions the way his voice softens as he speaks to Dennis.
“I have a woman, who’s short of breath and has a fever. I have her on oxygen, but she keeps mumbling something in what I believe is Korean, but I’m not too sure. Her BP’s 132/68, pulse ox is 94, and her pulse is steady. Her temp is 103.9.” Dennis says, and Michael can hear how his nervousness started to fade by the way he was talking with confidence, confidence that sounded really sexy to him.
“What test have you done so far?” Michael asks and he turns around fully, so Dennis has his full attention.
“I’m waiting for her to get a chest x-ray, I’ve already done labs, and a CBC.” Dennis says, and Michael nods.
“That’s good, okay, once her chest x-rays come back, come find me. I’ll try and find a Korean interpreter for now.” Michael says, and he watches Dennis nod, before he takes off towards his other patient. Michael shamelessly watches as he walks away, sparing one to many glances at Dennis’s ass.
—————-
“Your chest CT came back a bit foggy, indicating some sort of infection in your lungs. As soon as we get your labs back, we’ll go from there.” Michael says as he stands next to Dennis. He allows the interpreter to translate the phrase to the woman, and the woman says something back in Korean.
“Thank you. Could I get a cup of water?” The interpreter translates, and Dennis looks over to Michael, who nods, before he walks out of the room to get a cup of water. He comes back in the room to see Michael and the woman still chatting, and he walks over to the woman’s left side and hands her the water.
The woman thanks him, and helps her take off her oxygen mask, so she could sip her water. While all of this is happening, Michael is just staring at Dennis (like always), but this time he couldn't help showing his fond smile as he watched Dennis interact with the patient. So caught up with these new emotions, he doesn’t realize what he says when Dennis asks him a question.
“Dr. Robby, shouldn’t the labs be in by now?” Dennis asks in confusion, because he’s been waiting for those labs for 20 minutes now.
“They should be up soon, baby.” Michael says in a soft tone, and Dennis’s eyes widen. The interpreter, who was still with them, translated their conversation to their patient, who was sitting down and looking confused. Once the patient realizes what happened, she couldn't help but laugh a little, which causes her to cough, but she gets out a couple of words before Dennis puts the oxygen mask back on her.
“She asks how long you two have been together.” The interpreter says, and Dennis’s ears start to turn red, and Michael finally realizes what he said. He quickly tries to de-escalate the situation as he looks at Dennis, who’s face is fully red now.
“Oh, we’re not together,” Michael starts to say, but the ‘yet’ was on the tip of his tongue, he held it back though, for Dennis’s sake. “, and that was a little slip up on my part. I’m sorry for the confusion.” Michael says, and the woman nods, but she still smiles and says something else.
“You two would look great together, though.” The interpreter says, and Michael couldn't help laugh a little.
Yeah, like I don’t know that already. I can’t stop thinking about that exact thought. Michael thought, and he makes a comment about ‘finding where your labs are’, before he walks out of the patients room with Dennis walking right behind him.
As soon as Dennis closes the door to the patient’s room, Michael places a hand on his shoulder. The touch was light, but it still made Dennis jump a bit, which kind of heart Michael’s feelings, but he already felt bad enough about embarrassing Dennis.
“Hey, I’m sorry about that back there. I just came out, and I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or call you that name.” Michael says apologetically. He wasn’t sorry per say, for calling Dennis baby, but he was sorry for making Dennis uncomfortable. Dennis laughs, and it sounds awkward, and Michael just wants to get on his knees and apologize again by how uncomfortable and nervous Dennis sounds.
“It’s okay, Dr. Robby. We all say things that we don’t actually mean, especially while under pressure, or stressed. You’re under both categories, so I don’t blame you for saying that name at all.” Dennis finally says after a few seconds of just standing there and staring at anywhere but Michael. Michael let out a sigh of relief, and he squeezed Dennis’s shoulder.
“Good, now I’ll go see where your patient’s labs are, and I’ll come find you once I have them back.” Michael says softly, and Dennis nods and he walks away, leaving Michael watching him once more. It’s starting to become a bad habit, but Michael doesn’t mind the view he gets every time he does so.
Fuck, I can’t believe I called him that, though it sounded so natural. Shit, why the hell am I crushing on my intern, and why the hell is Myrle trying to escape the ER? Michael thought, and his eyes, the ones that were following Dennis, quickly landed on Myrle, who was rolling her way towards the ER entrance. Michael sighs, and he gives himself a few seconds to mentally prepare himself for Myrle’s flirty comments before hes walking towards her.
“Myrle, where do you think you’re going?”
