Unraveled: A Winter Soldier Origin

Summary:

The year is 1945, in the heat of the Second World War. The last thing James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes remembers is falling - falling and listening as his best friend Steve Rogers, more commonly known as Captain America, called after him. When he wakes up in the hands of some of World War II's greatest enemies, everything takes a turn for the worst as Bucky is slowly transformed into a living nightmare, both mentally and physically.

Can he escape this nightmare, or will he be forever trapped living a life that may cost others their own?

Hello and welcome to Unraveled: A Winter Soldier Origin. Before you start reading, please read THIS:

Please note: I may not have all of the details correct (people, places, times), but I did my best to stay true to everything while still maintaining an original, creative flair. Many of the websites I consulted for dates and information would fluctuate years and locations, so I went with whichever date/location seemed to be the most common and most accurate to the MCU.

If you're a reader who's not familiar with the MCU, then today's your lucky day. I did my best to explain everything in a way that makes it enjoyable for ALL readers, whether they're new to the MCU, long time fans, or completely unfamiliar with the MCU. I did so because my goal is to have anyone who clicks on this story be able to understand and enjoy it, regardless of how much they know about Marvel.

My beta and I proofread this entire thing about six times and I'm sure there are probably still typos so if you see any, feel free to point them out so I can potentially fix them. AI was not used in any part of this process, and I do not condone the use of AI to assist in writing, developing plots, proofreading, designing artwork/covers, etc...

And now, onto the boring but ImportantSoIDon'tGetInTrouble stuff. . .

If you know the story of the Winter Soldier, then you know it can get incredibly violent and extremely dark at times. This story will be the same way, with graphic depictions of fights including blood, guns and gun violence, needles, suicidal thoughts, sexual assault (not graphic), abuse, and death. If any of those subjects deeply unsettle you, I would suggest not reading this story. I will not be putting trigger warnings at the beginning of chapters in order to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, so consider this and the tags your overall trigger warning.

SPOILER WARNING:

This story technically contains MAJOR spoilers for a large chunk of the MCU (all three Captain America movies, mostly), as well as Winter Soldier: Cold Front. If you are new to the MCU and do not want anything spoiled for you, PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS STORY. If you still wish to read at a later date, I recommend putting it in your library or archiving/bookmarking it until you're fully caught up on the MCU. But also kudos to you if you're new and have managed to avoid the internet's spoilers for this long (;

DISCLAIMER:

I have written my own interpretation of the story of the Winter Soldier, one of the many glossed-over backstories of the MCU. I have written how I imagine everything to have played out in an MCU centered timeline. The main characters used in this story belong entirely to Marvel and Mackenzie Lee and are in no way mine. Sections of dialogue, most notably in book two, also belong to Marvel and are in no way mine. The basic plot of this story also belongs solely to Marvel.

I used the basic plot only for the sake of continuity and while I realize some people may consider that to be lazy writing, please try to understand that my intention is not to seem like a lazy writer. My intention is to take a story that the MCU (the Marvel Cinematic Universe, NOT the comics) never went into detail with and fill in all of those empty spaces, to give you the details of what I imagine to have happened in a Marvel Cinematic Universe centered timeline based off of what happened in the MCU, Winter Soldier: Cold Front, and occasionally the comics. Hence why you may recognize some sections of dialogue/action sequences. There may be some parts movie/comic fans recognize, and there will be many other parts that no one will recognize because I came up with them. I did as many fanfiction writers do when writing origin stories: I used the basic plot to try and enhance the main character's story while also incorporating the character's current, "canon" story arc.

Now that the boring stuff is over (yay), I sincerely hope you enjoy Unraveled, a two part origin story of the Winter Soldier. Book two, Unbound, is also complete and can be found under my works following this one.
