Fictober Day 19: Yes, I’ve missed this

Summary:

Right after returning to Japan, Hinata runs into Kageyama. They, of course, end up playing volleyball.

Work Text:

After 2 years away in Brazil, Hinata had finally returned to Japan just weeks before the V League was scheduled to start its official matches. It was humid out and the sun was beating down on him, but that did not deter him from biking his through the familiar mountain roads towards Karasuno.

Sure, he would’ve liked to make the trip in the early morning before the sun had fully risen, but since he was still adjusting to the time difference, he was still waking up quite late in the day. He couldn’t leave the trip to his high school stomping grounds for later though, he had to join official team practices soon after all.

Once he reached Sakanoshita, Hinata pulled his bike to a stop, setting the kick stand and practically slamming the sliding screen open as he yelled, “Coach!” only to jump back when in addition to Coach Ukai’s wide eyes, he saw Kageyama’s startled face staring back at him.

He dramatically pointed to his former setter. “What are you doing here!? Shouldn’t you be in Tokyo with the Jackals?”

Kageyama’s face scrunched up like he was trying to solve a difficult math problem before he asked, “Shouldn’t you be in Osaka with the Adlers?”

Hinata shrugged. “Official practice starts next week. I’m time adjusting and visiting people this week.”

Kageyama nodded. “I’m on break still.”

Coach Ukai chuckled. “Well, it’s good to see that you two haven’t really changed at all.”

“”Hey! I’ve changed!” they chorused, “”I’m much better at volleyball now!””

Coach Ukai just cracked up even more at that before waving them off. “I really appreciate that you two decided to come see me, but why don’t you guys go play some volleyball first? I’ll stay open till night time like always.”

The former freak duo straightened up at that, glancing at each other before bowing to their former coach. “”Please excuse us!”

And with that they were racing to the park, shouting all the way. Ukai shook his head, and just moved Hinata’s bike to a better spot and put a bike lock on it.

At the park, Hinata and Kageyama did passes, digs, and serves before the Hinata looked at Kageyama expectantly, practically dancing in place.

Kageyama imagined it. He thought he had Hinata’s measure by now, so it’d probably be fine. It had been a long time after all. He smirked. “Alright, give me your best speed, and your highest jump, and-“

“You’ll bring the ball to me.”

“I’ll bring the ball to you.”

Hinata grinned, got in position, and tossed the ball up. He was off like a shot, legs eating up the ground under him before he jumped sky high, eyes tightly closed even though he was long past needing to do that.

And- BAM!

The ball hit his palm with a satisfying smack and made an audible thud against the grass. Now back on the ground, he clenched his fist. “Yes! I missed this so much!” he turned to Kageyama, still beaming, “You’re the best!”

Kageyama scoffed, though his cheeks were flushed red. “Whatever dumbass. Now are we going to do that again or what?”

“Of course! As many times as we can!”
