In Front of Your Lens

Summary:

"When looking at everyone working with her today in the room, her heart drops.

Standing near the camera, the photographer stares at her. Ekko.

She never thought she'd see him again. Her ex boyfriend."

OR, ★

2 years ago Powder broke up with Ekko due to their relationship turning into many arguments because of her bad communication.

After getting signed with a clothing company as a model, she finds out that Ekko is her photographer. Questions go unanswered, and their paths will continue to cross.

Notes:

Read to avoid any confusion!!:
Jinx goes by Powder in this fic because she didn't go through all the traumatics. Her "stage name" if you will, is JINX. It's what she's called as a model :)

HELLOOO! I really enjoy this idea. I'm not a model, nor a photographer. So if my facts aren't straight, that's why.

I have done lots of research on this though, so hopefully that paid off!

I made a playlist for this chapter for those who like that <3

Anddd... Yeah! I hope you enjoy it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: In Front of Your Lens

Chapter Text

'JINX' On Current Fashion Trends: "I used to be picky 'bout what I would model."

Supermodel 'JINX' AKA Powder Lane talks about how she hopes to model something loud for a future runway show. Recent interview shares her thoughts.

"I used to be picky 'bout what I would model." Said JINX. "Recently I did a shoot that was straight outta fairytale book." She laughs. "That's cute 'n all... But I think I'd like to model something more loud. I recently got to attend Zaun Fashion Collection. Those fits really had me wishing I was one of their models this year."

Powder locks the door to her apartment with a click and plops the keys into her purse. It's early morning, and she has a photoshoot in about twenty minutes. The shooting location isn't far away, so she thought she could leave late. But, as always she will probably be late herself.

But, that didn't stop her from making a smoothie this morning. Horrible choice. They're not bad, and she's mastered a recipe by now after being gifted a blender. But, if she's going to get any energy this morning, maybe coffee would've been a better choice.

Too late for that anyways. She walks to the nearest sidewalk to see her driver already there waiting for her. She waves and approaches the car, pulling the backdoor open.

"G'morning!" Powder smiles, hopping into the seat and closing the door behind her.

"Good morning. How are you doing?" The driver asks.

"Already sweating from all the leather I'll have to wear today. But other than that, pretty good." She places her drink in a cup holder before fishing her phone from out of her bag.

The driver chuckles. "I bet." With that, he starts to drive.

Powder opens up social media. Unfortunately, when she's not busy, she is very chronically online. The only thing about being famous is that half the content she sees is about her. There's good and bad to that. But today, it seems to be good.

Her feed is filled with different photos of her recent photoshoot. There's people comparing it to movies, even edits using the short behind the scenes video she has no idea who took of her.

She smiles seeing some of the reposts.

@jinxsrightbraid

OHMY GSOH SHE LOOKS LIKE A FAIRY HERE

@everythingjinx

the hair, the outfit, the face card? Are you seeing this

@powpowwowww

I've looked at this picture about 50 times today alone AHHHHHHISISOSI

Powder giggles at the comments. She has to say, she does really like that photoshoot.

Her whole career she's been compared to being a fairy or a unicorn, something mythical. And this definitely brings that to life.

@jinxified

Is jinxs next photoshoot gonna have the vibe she talked about in that interview?

It will. She almost immediately got signed with a new clothing line focused on leather pieces. When her agency told her, she was shocked. Ask and you shall receive— or whatever they say.

She presses the button to like that post, just for suspense.

Powder continues to scroll through until the car comes to a stop and the driver announces their arrival.

She looks up at the white building with brown accents. It has few windows and looks old. Half of her shooting locations look like this, but the inside always looks so modern. It's deceiving.

"Thanks! Wish me luck." She collects her belongings and hops out the car.

"All the luck to you." He sends her off with a thumbs up.

Powder smiles and closes the car door, turning around and walking up to the entrance of the building. She opens the door, and just as she suspected, the inside looks like it was built yesterday. Polished to perfection, a smell in the air strong enough to give someone a headache, and soft music filling the air.

She navigates to the fitting room and is greated by the crew. A round of greetings comes her way as she enters, and it makes her grin.

"Hi guys! I hope I'm not too late." Powder sets down her purse along with her smoothie on a nearby table.

"You're just on time." A woman with the shortest ginger bob she has ever seen approaches her and takes her arm. She leads her to the changing area completed with a rack of clothes.

"Name's Maddie. I picked out your outfits for the shoot." Maddie smiles, clasping her hands together in front of her.

"Thanks." She looks over the the rack. "What's first?"

"Whichever you'd like. I sectioned them off, but you can switch some pairs."

Powder is immediately drawn to a cherry red set. A pair of shorts with buckle designs with a matching leather jacket. The jackets fit is oversized, and there's no given top with it. She thinks she understands what that means.

"I'll try this one first." She takes it off the rack by the hanger.

"Sounds good! I'll see you outside so we can photograph it. You know the drill."

Powder nods and closes the curtain to the changing area. It's as humid as it always is in changing rooms as she switches her clothes for the new ones. Maybe she'll request a fan on her next rider.

She unclasped her bra, putting it with the rest of her clothes and shrugs on the coat.

So she was correct, it's a little cheeky this way. The coat being a contrast and allowing her middle to peak out all while still being covered. Powder looks at herself in the mirror before stepping out.

There's some commotion for her outfit as everyone sees her and she gives them a twirl.

"I like the way you think! This is nice." Powder walks over to the wall to have her fitting be photographed. It's like this before her actual photoshoot, and honestly she has no idea why they need this additional photo.

Maddie smiles at the compliment before snapping her picture. It shows up on a nearby computer, ready to print and be put on the wall.

This step is repeated for every outfit, until it's finally time to get ready.

Maddie turns to another crew member. "Would you call Gert over and tell her that Jinx is ready for hair and makeup?"

Powder perked up. "Gert is here?"

Gert has become her primary makeup artist over the years and a close friend of hers. She wasn't expecting them to have her here today. Although she does always request to have Gert, she can't always make that happen.

"Yup!"

Powder squeals and picks up her smoothie before sitting down in the makeup chair. She takes a few sips, wishing she had coffee as she waits excitedly.

Gert enters the room, makeup bags in hand with a smile.

"Hey Gert!" Powder extends her arms out to bring her into a hug. She chuckles and gives her a squeeze, rubbing her back.

"Dude, I haven't seen you in forever." Gert says.

"Didn't you do my makeup for my runway show 2 weeks ago?"

"Yeah, well, that's a while." She sets down her makeup bags on the vanity table, zipping them open.

"Mmm.. You're right."

..

Gert begins to do her makeup as another man does her hair. It's all about multitasking in this industry— and Powder can do a lot of it.

She nearly talks everyone's ears off as they style her, and she's not sorry about it.

When they're finished, Powder is ready to change into her first outfit and go into the room dedicated to her shoot. Her hair somehow feels even heavier as she walks, because they mixed some red hair into her braids today. It ties the look together after it is completely on. She slips into some black boots for contrast and heads off to the shooting room.

To no surprise, the room is bright, complete with a white backdrop and studio lights on either side. When looking at everyone working with her today in the room, her heart drops.

Standing near the camera, the photographer stares at her. Ekko.

The world seems to freeze around them as she looks at him with her lips pursed. She never thought she'd see him again. Her ex boyfriend. The man she grew up with and had dated since high-school. She broke off their relationship 2 years ago when their relationship became a bunch of arguments due to Powders lack of communication. It was her fault. Yet, she couldn't face that truth. She has worked with him countless times before. He knows all her favorite poses, what angles she prefers, the amount of takes before she gets bored.

Ekko doesn't only know about her as a model. He knows her for who she is. Everything about her. And she knows everything about him. At least, she did know.

They chased this dream together. Her becoming a model and him becoming a photographer. They would practice for their future in her room with minimal lighting and shitty camera quality.

They've achieved everything. And yet, Powder couldn't keep her promise of keeping herself together. As a result, she's no longer his.

And even though it's been 2 years, she hates that reality. Magazines and social media drama about their breakup. People posting pictures of them and captioning them with how they could never deal with it 'how JINX does.'

Little do they know she barely does. She lost her other half, and there's no one to blame but herself.

Seeing him here now is causing all the memories to comes flooding back. All the regret that consumes her and that she swears she'll let go one day. But right now, she can't.

Powder looks behind her, then back at Ekko. Despite herself, she walks towards him and the camera crew.

He greats her first. "Hey.." His voice almost seems breathless, or maybe it's just her. She realizes now that he knew she'd be here today. Why did he accept to photograph her in the first place? He's keeping it professional while she's losing herself.

Of course he would. He's always been like that. And she hates it. She hates that he doesn't hate her. She hates that he would want to see her again. She hates that she still loves him.

Powder opens her mouth to say it back, but closes it. She tugs on the jacket, closing it over her exposed body. She's lost all her confidence— something she absolutely needs for a shoot. Would it be selfish to ask for a break? Then again, she can't even greet him, how is she supposed to ask for time to regroup? Especially since he's the reason.

"You oka-"

"I'm—!" Powder cuts him off, pausing when that single word comes out a little too loud. She glances at her surroundings, letting out a sigh. "...fine. Thanks."

She didn't even want to see his face after her sudden yelling. Instead, she walks over to the marking on the floor, right in front of the camera. Someone from the crew carries over a black stool for her to sit on first.

Adjusting on the seat, she looks back up to see Ekko fixing his camera angle.

There's something nostalgic to this. Watching him look through his camera lens at her. She has a million questions in this moment, none of which will ever be answered.

He gives her a thumbs up when he's done. She takes a deep breath, leaning forward slightly and tilting her head up— a pose she's used to.

The camera lights snap, and for the first time in a while, she feels nervous in front of the lens. Her heart feels heavy and all she can wonder is what he's thinking in this moment too.

"Maybe hold your braids." He suggests.

Powder grabs her hair from behind her and holds them up in her hands. She tilts her upper body, looking off to that direction. The camera snaps again.

She does the same pose with a different expression, and once again the camera snaps.

"Alright," Ekko takes his camera off the tripod and walks over to her.

In front of her, he doesn't say anything. She stares up at him, lips pursed. He looks like he's lost in thought as he looks back at her. Does being close like this make him nervous, too?

Selfishly, all she wants to do in this moment is grab him closer and breathe in his scent. Run her fingers through his locs. Hug him. Kiss him. Keep him.

He turns his gaze back to his camera. "Just a closeup, okay?"

Powder nods, keeping still so he can take her picture.

The time goes on and they take more photos, new poses, different outfits. It all felt like a dream. And just like that, she was done.

She was brought back to the fitting rooms to change back into her everyday clothes and undo her hair and makeup.

After that, she stood next to Ekko, checking her photos and seeing which ones looked best.

She couldn't help but keep looking over to him instead. Everytime he catches her, she looks back to the screen in front of them.

After picking out her favorites, she begins to walk away, wanting to go home immediately.

"Powder," Ekko calls out.

She stops and looks behind her. He pauses before saying "Nevermind. Get home safe, okay?"

"Mhm." She takes a good look at him, thinking that once again it might be her last unless it's through a screen. "...I will."

With that, she leaves, saying her goodbyes to everyone who helped her and getting in with her driver.

As soon as Powder sets foot inside her apartment, she slams the door behind her. Tears swell in her eyes and stream down her face. Her throat feels tight as she takes her purse off her shoulder and throws it at a nearby wall. The impact makes the contents of it fall out and onto the floor.

She groans, voice strained from her sobs as she wipes at her eyes. She's angry. Not at anyone but herself. There's no reason why she should be acting like this. She was the one who broke up with him, and it's not like they're on the worst of terms— at least she thinks so after today. And yet, she can't stop herself from crying.

She's gone through so many emotions today, all leading up to this moment. Powder tugs on her braids, walking further into her apartment.

She goes straight to her bedroom, not bothering to turn on the lights. Blindly navigating through the dark room, she finds her bed an plops down onto it. Powder chokes out a sob and buries her face in her blanket.

She still wishes she could know what Ekko was thinking in that moment.

He's barely changed in looks since the last time she saw him. That day, he was angry and worried all at the same time. But he's still kind. Still has a smile that could light up a room. Still is the man she once knew.

Today made her realize just how much she misses him. And she hopes that she'll never have to feel this way again. At least, she'll tell herself that she's over it soon enough.

But for now, she'll feel every little bit of those emotions.
