Chapter Text
[1990]
It started when they were twelve.
Shauna’s parents’ divorce was officialized in the summer, so their first holiday season didn’t go exactly as planned. Deb got Hannukah – Shauna’s dad didn’t subscribe to any religion, so Christmas was never really a deal on their household –, and they celebrated as they always did: her grandma came for the dinner on the first night and Shauna almost forgot the mess her life had turned into while she lavished on latkes, kugel and all the delicious fried meals grandma Esti cooked. When winter break came along, Shauna got anxious about finally meeting her father’s new house in Boston; he’d moved right after her birthday back in July and had only come down to visit on Thanksgiving – driving was tiring and the Amtrak could get hefty if he came more frequently, Sean had explained during one of their rare phone calls.
So, winter break was all they had. Some of it, really. Since he was new at his job, Sean couldn’t simply ask for PTO during the holidays, so his parents were coming to pick Shauna up the day after Christmas, and they would drive her to Boston. It was going to be so cool – a road trip with the grandparents she rarely got to see? Sign her up!
Needless to say, it didn’t happen. Something came up at work and dad was being flown to New Mexico, and her grandparents couldn’t possibly take care of her for like six straight days, so Shauna did the only thing she could. She smiled – even though he couldn’t see her –, thanked him for the gifts he’d sent the money for, and agreed to visit him in Boston on spring break.
“I’m so sorry, baby”, her mom cocooned her after a pretty heated argument over the phone.
Shauna didn’t say anything, she just cuddled up on her mother’s arms and cried like the little girl she was. She couldn't understand why her father didn’t make any effort to be with her; it was as if Shauna became an afterthought as soon as Deb filled the divorce. Many of the kids in her class had divorced parents, even at twelve Shauna knew it was fairly common for marriages to end on a bitter note, it bothered her that it had happened to her parents, but she could cope. She was coping during the semester, it was hard not having her dad to have movie nights on Saturdays or pick her up from soccer practice every other day, or even to tuck her in on the nights her mom had a night shift at the hospital.
“You can just stay at mine,” Jackie had said one afternoon, when it became clear Sean had forgot it was his time to pick Shauna up from soccer. “We can make that pillow fort we were talking about.”
And that’s how things usually went from then on. Shauna became the fourth Taylor. Marilyn – Jackie’s mom – wasn’t as nice as Deb, no one could really compare to Shauna’s mom when it came to warmth, but she was always there when Shauna needed most. There was always an extra plate on the table or blanket in Jackie’s bed, or even a name on their country club family listing. Sure, Marilyn and Deb were rarely on the same page when it came to what it meant to be a mom or how to raise their respective daughters, but their disagreements never got in the away of Jackie and Shauna’s friendship. It never got in the way of Shauna’s wellbeing like Sean and Deb’s divorce had. Did Marilyn judge Deb for divorcing Sean even though Shauna was pretty sure her dad had cheated on her mom? Yes, she did. But did she make sure Shauna had ham and cheese sandwiches – her favorites, by the way – and sliced oranges after soccer practice? Damn well, she did.
So going to the Taylors’ cabin in Vermont for New Years wasn’t a big deal to twelve-year-old Shauna. It was a no brainer, really. Deb took on a double shift when she thought Shauna was going to Boston and none of her colleagues were open to switch shifts with her once her scumbag of an ex stood her daughter up, so Marilyn came to the rescue and Shauna got to go on her first snow trip as a consolation prize for being a child of divorce.
The snow made Jackie’s eyelashes sparkle as they watched the fireworks. They were sitting on the steps of the porch, shoulders brushing under the blanket Marilyn had insisted they hide under it. Her best friend searched for her hands and threaded their fingers, making Shauna’s heart skip a couple of beats as they nudged even closer to each other.
“I’m glad you’re here, Shippy,” Jackie whispered, resting her head on Shauna’s shoulders. “But I’m also sorry for all of your dad stuff.”
Shauna looked up to the sky. She thought about her dad and everything he’d put her and her mom through in the past few months, the sadness and the absence, the silence tears Shauna cried under her covers and the loud screams her mother shouted over the phone, the pity looks Shauna received every time Deb didn’t make it to pick up on time and the somehow proud handshakes Sean got when he took Shauna to Walmart on Black Friday – as if him just being there was enough in the eyes of the town folk.
A snowflake melted right between the brown eyes Shauna got from her father. She inhaled the crisp winter air and felt the weight of her best friend’s body leaning on hers. It made her smile.
“I’m glad I’m here too.” She finally said.
Jackie didn’t miss a beat as she mumbled, “Maybe your mom can come with us next year,” Shauna’s smile grew, her heart warm. “It could be our family tradition.”

[1994]
By the time they turned sixteen, they were over it. Of going to Vermont and being with their parents, not of spending New Year’s Eve together. Shauna didn’t think she was ever going to get tired of doing anything with Jackie, if she was being honest.
As Juniors, they shared most of their classes – save for the AP ones Shauna got into alongside Tai and Lottie. They had homeroom together – on first period, obviously; they made it to varsity on the soccer team – which Shauna was mostly happy about, but only because it took so much of her time and her college counselor was always talking her up about applying to some schools other than Rutgers, something Shauna was not going to do cause Rutgers was the plan, their plan. Jackie and Shauna were basically attached to the hip and Shauna couldn’t be happier.
I mean, she could be a little happier. There was this one tiny detail that kept her from full happiness – a concept Shauna and Lottie had spent literal hours arguing about its existence. Shauna’s conclusion was that she would pretty much be fully happy if Jackie hadn’t got herself a boyfriend, two years ago.
Jeff Sadecki kept her from being happy.
He wasn’t terrible or anything. He was pretty and he did seem to actually like Jackie – something that wasn’t always a given amongst the other couples in WHS –, and he was always polite and respectful – in a very teenage boy kind of way, but he tried.
“He really does try, you know,” Jackie said for the hundredth time that year. “He’s just not very good with his hands.”
Shauna scoffed. “Well, that explains why the baseball team sucks.”
“As if you cared about baseball.” Jackie flipped through the pages of her Cosmo without bothering to read anything.
Shauna closed her trig textbook to go and sit on the bed. She had three more finals before break and could really use the study time, but she knew Jackie was frustrated. Jeff’s inability to satisfy always made her a little moody and, as Jackie’s best friend, it was Shauna’s job to try and make it better.
“I care about you.”
Jackie set her magazine on the bedside table and got on her knees on the mattress. Shauna just stared at her. She did that a lot this days and hoped her friend didn’t noticed how frequently she just… appreciated the view.
“My mom said yes,” Shauna loved how Jackie eyes got huge when she was excited. “We can go to Rose McLean’s party!”
“Yay!”
Shauna tried not to sound sour, but it was hard seeing another one of their traditions fade away because of Jeff. They always went to the Taylors’ cabin for winter break, they’d spent their days skiing up and down the easiest route cause Jackie was keen on not risking any injuries, and their nights cuddled up under the covers watching movies like When Harry Met Sally – Shauna’s favorite – or Home Alone – Jackie’s pick. That was what they did for four years and now all Jackie talked about was kissing her damn boyfriend at midnight as if she didn’t complain about Jeff’s eager use of tongue every other day.
She knew she was being irrational and immature, but everything was changing way too fast. Soon, they’d be seniors and Jackie would stop talking about making out with Jeff and begin talking about possibly having sex with him – and Shauna didn’t know if was going to be able to deal with that without completely spiraling. There were not enough journals in New Jersey to accommodate the amount of venting she would need to do.
“I’m choosing to ignore your little pout,” Jack kissed the corner of her mouth and Shauna’s throat went dry. She closed her eyes so as not to stare into her best friend’s lips. “Even though you’re pretty cute when you’re all broody.”
“What do you want, Jackie?” Shauna made herself ask cause there was no way she could deal with Jackie’s fake flirting right now.
Jackie touched her face, her thumb caressing Shauna’s chin. Oh, she was about to ask for Shauna’s first born or something. After over a decade of friendship, Shauna knew all of Jackie’s tricks – the eyelash batting when she wanted Shauna to stay 30 more minutes at a party Shauna didn’t even want to go to begin with, the handholding in the back of Jeff’s car when she needed Shauna to stay over in order to get away from Jeff’s advances, the wet kisses when she and Jeff break up and Jackie just needed an outlet. She fell for all of it, not proudly but always willing to please.
“Jeff’s been pushing things.” Shauna opened her eyes just to find Jackie’s coy smile. “Not in a creepy kind of way,” she assured, her free hand resting on Shauna’s shoulder for good measure, “in a horny boy kind of way.”
“So, in a creepy way.”
Jackie rolled her hazel eyes, shifting on her knees. Shauna was leaning against the headboard, and Jackie was basically between her legs, her perfect posture making her the taller one for once. She blatantly stared at Shauna’s mouth for a couple of seconds and Shauna’s mind just… gave up. There was no scaping Jackie when she turned into Charmotron 2000.
“He’s a good one, Shippy. You know that.”
It was Shauna’s turn to roll her eyes. She muttered a “Just spill it out, Jackie” in her least annoyed tone. The last thing she wanted was to start a fight over Jeff and risk losing whatever was going on.
“I gave him a hickey last week,” Shauna’s eyes immediately darted to Jackie’s neck even though she knew there weren’t any markings on her skin. They saw each other barely clothed every day; she would’ve definitely noticed if Jeff had left a fucking hickey on Jackie’s pristine skin. “Relax, Shipman. I didn’t let him reciprocate.”
Shauna recoiled, ashamed of getting caught. Jackie kept her close.
“Can you just tell me what you want?”
“Who told you I want anything?” Jackie always wanted something, she just didn’t always ask for it. She was used to just taking it like it was hers to begin with. Shauna just stared at her. “Ok, I do. But I won’t get mad or sad or anything if you say no, ok? You can just tell me if its too weird or if you think its gross or something.”
“For fucks sake, Jackie!”
“He wants to do it to me at the party and I’m scared.”
Shauna was a very smart person, but she couldn’t help but ask “Scared of… hickeys?”, cause what the fuck was going on?
“Scared of my parents seeing it. Scared of how long it will take to get rid of it. You know, this type of thing.” Was Jackie… shaking? Shauna was pretty sure she was. “And I also want to know if I’ll be able to properly cover it with make up.”
“Ok. So? What do you want?”
Shauna was feigning ignorance. She knew exactly where this was going, her panties were already starting to puddle with the possibility of it. But she wanted to be sure. She wanted Jackie to say it. She wanted to savor the moment and relish it later, after Jackie went home, with her hands between her legs like the horny teenager she was.
“Well, can we try it?” Jackie licked her lips and Shauna’s mind went numb at the thought of where her tongue was going to be in a couple of minutes. “I would ask Jeff, but I know he’ll over do it and I’ll end up with purple bruises all over my neck.”
“You want me to suck on your…”
“It’s ok if you don’t want t-”
“I’ll do it.” Shauna hurried, shamelessly. “Of course I’ll help you, Jax.”
Jackie smiled big and then just went for it, basically jumping into Shauna’s lap to kiss her. Shauna giggled against her mouth and Jackie made sure she was taken seriously by settling between Shauna’s legs and resting her hand on Shauna’s neck.
Her hands skimmed through the sides of Jackie’s body, finding their place on the other girl’s waist. “How do you want to do this?” Shauna whispered against Jackie’s mouth, a thread of spit connecting them.
“Let’s go slow,” Jackie kissed her jaw, her eyes fixed on Shauna’s. “Like he and I should do it.”
Shauna had to try so hard to not completely let go of her self-control when things got like this. This wasn’t their usual routine; it wasn’t like Jackie was parading Jeff around by day and sneaking into Shauna’s arms at night. It wasn’t like that. They were best friends, and best friends helped each other navigate certain things; Jackie helped Shauna calibrate her right foot shoot after every practice cause they knew it could come to use someday even though Shauna’s left foot was as precise as it could get; Shauna helped Jackie understand the Civil War and the Boston Tea Party in prep for her final. And together they learned how to do what seemed to come naturally for most people.
It shocked Shauna a little that Jackie was such a force to reckon with on all aspects of social life – she had the perfect all american boyfriend, she was a natural leader amongst their teammates, she had charisma and charm and knew exactly what to say and when to say it to get people to follow her lead. Jackie was the epitome of everything Shauna supposedly hated: pretty and popular and rich and all the things Shauna wasn’t – couldn’t be.
And still she loved her. Shauna truly loved Jackie. Had since the blonde shoved a boy who was calling Shauna a teacher’s pet when she got a golden star for organizing the class bookshelf. They boy cried like little boys tend to do, but it was Shauna who fell.
“Fuck, Shippy,” Jackie whimpered under her – Shauna liked being on top, it gave her the illusion of control. Shauna’s mouth traced a line of kisses and bites through Jackie’s skin, going from behind her ear to her clavicle, giving special attention to the pulse point on her neck. She knew she wasn’t supposed to suck on Jackie’s neck, that was the whole point of their little exercise, but it was so hard with her back arching and her hands on Shauna’s hair, pressing them even closer, and the little noises she was making. “Do it on my shoulder, ok? Right here.”
Jackie guided Shauna’s head to the base of her neck, somewhere dangerously close to the neckline of most of Jackie’s preppy sweaters. Shauna’s eyes focused on the other girl’s face for the first time since she began her descent and the pent-up expression Jackie had on made her think that maybe, if she were brave enough, she could go even lower down Jackie’s body.
“You sure?” she whispered, her lips wet on Jackie’s skin.
“I’m sure, yeah.”
Jackie’s hips rolled under her, her knees accidentally hitting just the right spot between Shauna’s legs, and that sent Shauna over the edge she tried so hard to keep her distance from. She touched Jackie’s face, getting her honey gold locks behind her ear, and dived into her best friend's neck.
She sucked and nibbled and kissed and bit. Her tongue danced to the sound of Jackie’s whimper.
-
Two weeks later, Jackie came barging into her room. Winter break was on full swing, so Shauna’s days consisted of eating the greasiest concoction she could muster with the leftovers from the Hanukkah dinner they hosted last week and getting up to date on the reading she neglected during finals week. She was devouring Tai’s copy of The Secret History when she heard the front door slamming. Seconds later, Jackie was in front of her.
“What’s gotten into you?” she asked, curious.
“You and your damn mouth, Shipman!” Jackie pointed a finger at her. Shauna wanted to ask for some context, her mind going a million miles a second to try and find a reason for Jackie’s fury. But the blonde just kept going, “I was getting ready to go to dad’s company Christmas diner yesterday when my mom got into my room and saw your little…”, she pointed at herself then.
Shauna’s eyes went straight to Jackie’s neck again and this time she saw a reddish hickey right where her neck meets her shoulder. She gaped at her, speechless.
“Now I’m grounded for the rest of break!”
“Fuck, Jax, I’m so sorry,” she didn’t even know why she was apologizing. Jackie was the one to ask for another hickey session two nights ago, saying she wanted another sample before doing the real thing. And the hickey was exactly where Jackie’s hands led her back every single time Shauna tried going for Jackie’s shoulder, so it wasn’t like Shauna had much choice in the matter. “Does she know it was me?”
Jackie’s eyes went dark for a second, focusing on something beyond Shauna. “Of course not. Why would she think it was you?”
Fuck, fuck, fuck! “Uh, I don’t know I-”, she stuttered through her sentences, noticing a wall immediately growing between the two of them. “I just thought you and- I don’t-”
“She obviously thinks it was Jeff,” Jackie said the obvious part out loud. There was no reason for anyone to suspect they did anything other than gossip and gush about boys in their alone time. “It was this whole thing, she screamed and cried and all but called me a slut. And then she remembered I was staying at yours next week, so she panicked called her travel agent at like 8pm and tried to book me a ticket to Colorado.”
“Fuck,” was all Shauna could muster, her eyes still not capable of focusing on Jackie’s face. She was wearing a Yellowjackets long sleeve that was too big to be hers and too small to be Jeff’s, so Shauna knew it was the one she kept on Jackie’s closet to wear on their weekly sleepovers. “So, you’re going to Aspen with them?”
Since Jackie had thrown a tantrum over not going on New Years trip, her parents decided to upgrade their plans now that there weren’t two teenagers tagging along. They ditched the family cabin in Vermont and were going to a resort in Aspen with some of her dad’s work friends.
“She couldn’t find a ticket for less than like a thousand dollars,” Jackie had her coy smile on when Shauna finally looked up, “and dad’s saving for the new car, so he shut it down.”
“Oh.” Shauna didn’t know how to feel. She was happy Jackie wasn’t going to be hundreds of miles away for five days, but she wasn’t exactly saddened with the thought of her not kissing Jeff at midnight. “So, you’re… staying? I thought you said you were grounded?”
Jackie sat on the edge of her bed. “I am. My mom called yours and I’m still staying over. I’m just not allowed to go to the party. Or see Jeff.”
She could kiss Marilyn Taylor right now. This was the best-case scenario even before the hickey ordeal. Getting Jackie all to herself for five days? Not having to go to a party she never really wanted to attend? No Jeff? That was the dream.
“Fuck, Jax, I’m sorry,” she lied. “I know how much you wanted to go to that party.”
Jackie shrugged. “Jeff suggested getting out after you mom passes out,” Her heart sank. Of course she’d talked to Jeff and planned a way out of Shauna’s grip already. “But I told him I didn’t want to upset your mom.”
Shauna’s eyes lit up and she could feel her heart warm. Fuck.
“Really? You’re not going?”
Jackie laughed. “We’re not going,” Shauna could overanalyze Jackie’s tendency to boss her around later, right now all she wanted was to enjoy the satisfaction of having one more year of the Jackie and Shauna NYE special. “We could do it like old times, just watch the most amount of movies we physically can.”
“The old times? Really?” she smiled. “You mean like last year?”
Jackie rolled her hazel eyes and pushed her shoulder. “Don’t be a drag.”
-
When New Year’s Eve came, they did exactly what they’d planned. Deb was upstairs, cleaning the house like her life depended on it – her mom’s only superstition was that beginning the new year with a clean home could only bring good things to their household, so cleaning was her favorite way to spend the 31st of December. Jackie and Shauna were on the basement, snuggling on Shauna’s childhood couch, watching their favorite holiday movies and just… being together like they used to.
“I’m kind of happy we stayed in tonight,” Jackie mumbled against Shauna’s neck. They were cuddling, Jackie being the big spoon for a change. Shauna had to try really hard not to make any noises every time Jackie’s hips moved behind her, pressing against her ass. “No party compares to this.”
Shauna gulped. “Yeah?” She pressed herself into Jackie, leaning her head on the girl’s shoulder. “Not even one where Jeff’s up and ready to suck on your neck at midnight?”
“Ew,” Jackie scoffed, “don’t mention him being up and ready ever again, please.”
Shauna thinks that deep down Jackie knew she had feelings for her. She had to. She knew it and that’s why she indulged Shauna, leading her on until she was on edge and then pulling off completely and running back do Jeff’s arms. She was so mad when her mom found out about the hickeys, furious over not being with her boyfriend at midnight, and then her chin was on Shauna’s neck and her hands were on Shauna’s waist and her hips pressed against Shauna’s back, and she was acting like there was nowhere she would rather be.
They switched to CBS once it got close to midnight and Shauna went up to the kitchen to get some of her mom’s boxed wine. Deb’s been long asleep – the girls cooked diner and they ate together around six, and then her mom just went to bed cause she had a ten-hour shift at six am tomorrow. Shauna ran down the stairs trying not to spill the wine when she heard Jackie calling after her, warning her there were only five minutes left in 1994.
“Happy New Years, Shippy.” Jackie wounded her arms around Shauna’s shoulders once the countdown began. Shauna’s hands rested on her torso, trying her best not to slip down to her waist. “I love you.”
“Love you too, Jax,” her head fit perfectly into Jackie’s neck, and she couldn’t help but inhale her perfume, sweet and fruity. “I’m sorry we couldn’t-“
“Stop apologizing.” Jackie pulled away, her hazel eyes going from Shauna’s own to her mouth for a brief second. “You did exactly what I asked you to.”
Shauna nodded in silence and then it just happened. As if it was always going to. When the clock hit midnight and the ball dropped all the way up in Times Square, Jackie Taylor kissed Shauna Shipman.

Chapter Text
[1995]
One second Shauna was pressed against the dresser, her mouth on Ryan’s and his hands kneading on her ass. It wasn’t amazing, but she was decently buzzed on Randy’s stash and Van’s cheap beer, and Ryan’ hazel eyes brought her right back to the zone every time she thought about going back to the party.
The other second, they were five feet apart and she was panting, her heart racing.
“Absolutely fucking not!” Jackie’s voice was even more commanding than when she shouted at the Yellowjackets mid-game. With one hand on the doorhandle, she stared at them for two seconds, her jaw locked, and then simply ordered Ryan to “Get out of here. Now.”
On his defense, Ryan searched for Shauna’s gaze before following Jackie’s order. On her defense, Shauna was too stunted to process whatever was going on so she just nodded him off without saying a word.
The torpor ended when Jackie closed and locked the bedroom door. Shauna took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of her nose and waiting for Jackie’s show to begin. Her head hurt already.
“What the fuck, Shauna?” there it was, the Jackie Taylor special, coming right in to end 1995 with a bang. “What are you doing?”
“Making sure I wasn’t going to be the only one in this party without someone to kiss at midnight,” she snarked, going past Jackie towards the bathroom. “Thanks for ruining my plan, by the way.”
She washed her face, not caring about the make-up Jackie took twenty minutes to put on anymore. What was even the point? She put some effort into fitting in, abandoning her flannel and wearing the dress Jackie and her mom begged her to purchase on black friday, borrowed Jackie’s floral perfume and everything. And it had worked. Ryan eyed her since he got to the party and, for the first time in a long while, Shauna wasn’t making herself wait by the corner until Jackie was up to give her some crumbs of attention.
He wasn’t the most popular boy in school – there was only one of those and Jackie snatched him up in freshman year, already –, but he was on the swimming team and she was pretty sure they had fourth period AP Calc together, so having him as her midnight kiss on New Year's wasn’t the worst idea in the world.
“Your plan?” Jackie leaned on the door frame, her muscled arms crossed. “You planned on hooking up with Ryan Lewis in my guest bedroom?”
Shauna didn’t want to dignify that sentence with an answer, she knew nothing good was coming out of her mouth if she tried to argue her case here, so she didn’t. She was tired of this dynamic, this eternal push and pull between her and Jackie. It wasn’t like she did anything wrong, they were at a New Year's Eve party – Jackie’s first house party, actually –, wanting to kiss someone was natural, expected. Shauna was desperately trying to fit into what everyone around her seemed to do organically, no one in her grade spent every waking minute waiting for their best friend to remember they existed.
People danced and laughed, smoked and drank, played beer pong and strip poker, hooked up – had sex. Meanwhile, Shauna pretended to have fun with the teammates she didn’t hate while staring at Jackie hanging off Jeff’s neck, his hands pawing on her ass in front of everyone like he wanted to make sure people knew who she belong to.
“Can we go back to the party now?”
Jackie didn’t flinch, blocking the way out. “Oh, now you care about the party I spent weeks planning?” she scoffed and Shauna was very proud of herself for not rolling her eyes. Everything would be fine once Jackie finished her little show. “You didn’t seem to care about my party when Ryan fucking Lewis had his tongue down your throat five minutes ago.”
“What’s wrong with Ryan?” she couldn’t help but ask. It didn’t matter how rocky their friendship had gotten lately, Jackie’s opinion still made Shauna’s gears turn. “He’s nice and he’s pretty, and the swimming team made it to states.”
Something the baseball team could never.
Jackie looked sick for a second there. She really did hate seeing Shauna get something she couldn’t have. And the implication Ryan had achieved something Jeff and his buddies on the baseball team couldn’t only made it worse.
“You think he’s pretty?” was what Jackie choose to say, for some reason. “Do you guys- Are you guys a thing or something?”
As if Shauna could ever have a thing with someone without Jackie knowing. She couldn’t even kiss someone at a party without Jackie barging in on them.
“Are you drunk already?” she asked cause Jackie wasn’t making any sense. “Did you smoke Randy’s joint?”
“Oh my God, are you dating him?” Jackie’s voice was hoarse as she watched Shauna go past her back into the bedroom. Shauna fixed her hair and her dress in front of the full body mirror, unable to hold a laugh at Jackie’s question. “What the fuck, Shipman? Why didn’t you-”
She could let Jackie spiral over her non-existent rapport with Ryan, but it was past 11pm when they came looking for some privacy, so countdown should be close and she wanted to find Randy or Nat and just get stoned into 1996.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, Jackie?” She turned to her, ready to get into it if it meant she was getting out of this fucking bedroom. “I just wanted someone to kiss at midnight like everyone in this goddamn party! I was tired of feeling left out and he is pretty and smart, and he went to that Smashing Pumpkins I missed cause you had your tonsils removed, so it seemed like a good idea. Would you rather I’d kissed Randy Walsh instead?”
Jackie stepped into Shauna’s space, her big hazel eyes searching for something in Shauna’s face. “So, you’re not dating him?”
This time Shauna did roll her eyes. “I’m not dating anyone. You know that.”
“Couldn’t you just fucking answer me then?” Jackie mumbled, looking straight into her eyes. “You’re such a fucking brat sometimes, Shipman.”
“Wow, two fucks?” Shauna scoffed, “You blow Jeff with that mouth?”
Ok, yeah. That was low, she knew that. But Jackie was getting on her nerves. Calling Shauna a brat when she couldn’t even phantom her friend having a boyfriend without throwing a tantrum? She deserved to get scolded. She was actively trying to undermine Shauna’s chances of having a nice night out for once, that was not very best-friendly of her, so bringing up something she knew made Jackie a little uncomfortable was a valid reaction.
Jackie has been giving Jeff head at once a week for a couple of months now, so it wasn’t like Shauna was lying. If Jackie felt comfortable enough to suck his cock on a Thursday morning before Shauna picked her up for school, then she shouldn’t act like Shauna talking about it was the worst thing in the world.
She did that a lot, got all closed off when Shauna mentioned anything Jeff, and at first Shauna thought it was because Jackie somehow knew about her feelings and didn’t want to upset her by talking about it. Now, she laughed at that hypothesis. Jackie may had known Shauna liked their make out sessions a little too much, but she would never be so kind as to spare her of hearing about how cool and hot Jeff was, and how he got his fingers down her panties on Lottie’s hot tub last weekend. No, Jackie knew Shauna had a stupid little thing for her and toyed with her heart anyway.
She would say she didn’t like doing stuff with Jeff and paw at Shauna’s breasts on the same breath or complain about Jeff using too much tongue while sucking and licking Shauna’s neck.
Shauna wasn’t stupid, she knew exactly what Jackie was doing and why she was doing it. She could pinpoint a fight with Jeff or her mother, an below average practice cause Nat was too stoned to hit the target or even a project deadline to every time Jackie ended up on her lap, moving against her leg to get just a little bit of friction before falling back on the couch or the bed and acting like nothing had happened. She enjoyed what they did, who wouldn’t enjoy having Jackie Taylor all pent up under them?, but it still didn’t feel right. She felt used and her heart broke a little bit when she remembered she was the other girl – even if Jackie didn’t categorize what they did as something other than best friends experimenting, she still had a boyfriend.
“You’re unbelievable, Shipman.” Jackie said, finally. Her eyes were wet, but she was clearly never letting those tears fall down her perfect face. “I was worried about you and I overreacted. There’s no reason to be such a-”
“Such a what, Jackie?” She arched one eyebrow and crossed her arms again. Jackie just stared, a coward as always when it came time to speak her mind. “C’mon. Call me a bitch.”
“Shut up.” Jackie pressed her lips. “Let’s get back to the party, it’s almost time for the countdown.”
Shauna didn’t know what got into her, but she couldn’t let it go this time around. She always let go, always let Jackie do and say whatever it pleased her. Not this time, not tonight. Not after cockblocking her and acting like Shauna was doing something wrong and almost calling her a bitch.
“No.” This time, she was the one to block the way. She stood by the door, her straight spine helping her tower over the other girl. “We’re only getting out once you call me a bitch like you wanted to.”
“Shipman, get the fuck out of my way.” Jackie greeted her teeth and Shauna shamefully throbbed between her legs. “I have a party to look out for.”
“Don’t call me Shipman,” she did kind of hate getting called by her dad’s last name, but that’s not why she whispered, “call me a bitch.”
Jackie tried moving her body, but it only made her laugh. Which made Jackie mad. Which made Shauna horny- hornier. “Shauna, c’mon. I’m sorry, ok? I ruined your hook up with perfect fucking Ryan and then I acted like a je- a crazy person. Can we go now?”
Wait, wait, wait. This could be good. Oh, this could be so good.
“You acted like what?” Shauna was pretty sure Jackie was about to admit she was jealous and now she needed to hear that. “What were you about to say right now? Finish your sentences, Jax, c’mon.”
She knew what the nickname did to Jackie and she was not above using it for her favor.
“I, uh,” Jackie Taylor was at a lost for words. That was a first. “I was about to say that I acted like a bitch,” Shauna laughed at her audacity, but Jackie just kept going, “that’s it. I was a bitch and I’m sorry.”
“You’re right,” Shauna smirked, “you were kind of a-”
“Don’t call me that,” Jackie interrupted, her scowl bringing the cute little wrinkle between her brows up. “Why would you call me that? I would never call you that, you know I wouldn’t. I was just nervous. And I apologized. Don’t be like that, please.”
“Can you just say it?” She insisted even though Jackie looked genuinely pained now. “You were going to. I’m not going to get mad. I just want you to say what you intended.”
Jackie bit her upper lip, her big hazel eyes focusing on anything but Shauna. “I didn’t mean to, Shauna. I said I was sorry, stop punishing me.”
“Call me a bitch or I’ll call you one.” That was Shauna’s final offer, and it got Jackie’s attention. “You know I’ll do it.”
“Do it, then,” Jackie called her bluff, taking another step into her personal space, “Call me a bitch, Shauna. I dare you.”
Shauna looked her up and down, from the perfectly styled honey gold locks that framed her face, to her hazel eyes and her golden make-up, to her plush lips and the baby blue dress that didn’t leave much to anyone’s imagination. Jackie was using her first house party as a means to an end. She was making a statement.
1996 was going to be her year and she wanted to make sure everyone knew that.
“You’re a-”
She didn’t finish the sentence, thankfully. Not only because she didn’t actually want to call her best friend a bitch, because she wasn’t given a chance to. Jackie jumped her, knocking Shauna on the wall with a thud as her hands reached for her neck and waist.
“Shut up,” Jackie groaned against her lips, her hungry mouth sucking on Shauna’s lower lip and her manicured nails digging into her neck, “Just shut the fuck up for once in your life, ok?”
Shauna was speechless as Jackie kissed her thoroughly, sucking and biting her lips, and using her tongue to sooth the sharp pain her teeth inflicted on Shauna’s mouth. Jackie pressed her onto the door, and Shauna was about to pry her legs open when the other girl pulled out, her eyes dark and her lipstick smeared. She looked at something beyond Shauna for a second and then pushed Shauna towards the dresser, going back to her mouth and jaw and neck with a smile on her face.
“Up?” Shauna suggested, breathless.
Jackie didn’t stop sucking on her neck even as she helped Shauna get up on the dresser. They laughed as the fake artwork and the family portraits propped on the dresser fell to the ground, Jackie’s hands going dangerously up Shauna’s legs. They’d never gone this far; they were never this clumsy. It was always measured; Shauna was always holding herself back – always trying not to scare Jackie off with a sudden moan or an unconscious roll of her hips. Jackie’s moves always seemed a bit calculated, she would kiss with just the right amount of tongue, and her teeth always dug on the perfectly safe spot above Shauna’s clavicle or on her shoulder; and she never put her hands below Shauna’s waistline like she was doing right now.
“Ten minutes, fuckers!” Someone shouted at the other side of the door.
It pained her to do so, but Shauna made herself say “Maybe we should-” at the exact same time Jackie’s fingertips reached her underwear. There was little to no pressure at the touch, but it made her back arch, and it got a stupid moan out of her.
Jackie pulled back, hair mussed from Shauna’s hands and lips swollen from kissing her. They stared at each other for a couple of seconds, Shauna’s heart was thumping at her chest, and her mind was a goner. There was nothing else besides a hungry-looking Jackie right in front of her.
“I don’t care,” Jackie kissed her softly this time, slow and passionate. She pulled Shauna to the edge of the dresser, her hands steady on Shauna’s hips. “Can I-”
“Yes.”
Jackie laughed through her nose. “You don’t even know-”
“I don’t care,” She wound her arms around Jackie’s shoulders, brushing her nose on the side of her face as she whispered on her ear, “The answer is yes.”
“Fuck, Shippy.” Jackie panted, placing a kiss on her shoulder. “Let me just-” And then she pulled Shauna’s panties to the side and touched her. Shauna blacked out, she legitimately couldn’t tell you what happened between that first tentative sweep of fingers through her drenched folds and the moment she came on Jackie’s fingers; her mind wasn’t able to storage that information without coming on the spot all over again.
She knew Jackie never went in. She just circled her clit and toyed at her entrance with two – maybe even three? – fingers. Her mouth kept on sucking on Shauna’s pulse point and her other hand covered Shauna’s mouth to keep her from being louder than the rest of the party.
“Jax, I’m-”
“I know, baby,” Jackie bit her ear, her thumb working with precision between Shauna’s legs. At afar, they heard their friends and colleagues scream and shout. When the countdown began, Jackie’s hand left Shauna’s mouth and her voice reached the brunette’s ear, “Do it on zero, ok?”
And Shauna did. She came on command, her moans muffled by everyone else’s shouts.
“Fuck, Shauna,” Jackie kept working her through it, a satisfied tone to her voice as Shauna’s nails dug on the back of her neck and Shauna’s hips moved against her hand. “Was that good?”
Shauna lay against the wall behind her, pulling Jackie’s hand from between her legs before she caved into her instincts and pushed her best friend’s fingers inside. She closed her eyes and tried to catch her breath, but she knew Jackie was waiting for some kind of validation – as it was always the case with her, she couldn't simply do a good deed, there had to be some kind of agenda.
“It was good, yeah.” She couldn’t give her much praise, couldn’t let Jackie see straight through her. “We should go back to the party, though.”
Jackie paused for a second, looking lost, before smiling and agreeing, “You’re right. I’ll just-” She looked around the bedroom. “I’ll just clean up in the bathroom. You can go ahead if you want.”
Shauna watched as she locked herself up in the bathroom, never taking a glance back to the girl she just… well, could they classify whatever just happened as sex? She didn’t actually know. Jackie never went inside so they would probably just act like it was another one of their heated make out sessions. Was fingering even sex? Was it even fingering if there wasn’t penetration? From Jackie’s point of view, no – Jeff did it to her occasionally and she still considered herself a virgin, so she most definitely wouldn’t call what just happened a proper fuck. But it also wasn’t like anything they’d ever done together.
They always kept things PG. Shauna never came close actually coming from anything they did – she thought about it, of course, but Jackie always pulled back right before it got too hot.
So, she didn’t know what to make of it. As it always seemed to be the case when it came to Jackie Taylor. And as seemed to be the case with Shauna Shipman, she did as she was told. She got off the dresser, made herself look presentable and went back to the party, not waiting for Jackie to crush her post-orgasmic bliss.
