Work Text:
In Forest Hills, mail may be the only service that works normally. Steve Harrington's mailbox is always full of bills, letters, and postcards.
Surviving Hawkins comes at a price he's happy to pay: friends for life.
Dustin calls all the time, but Max writes as if it were a diary. Steve responded to her letter months after she woke up from the coma and now, although they call each other and she lives with him when she is in Hawkins, Max continues to send letters non-stop. But to his surprise, Steve receives letters mostly from Will. Postcards of Lucas and Jonathan -sometimes Jon sends his own photos, sometimes cheap postcards-. Sometimes, a letter from Nance, though she and Robin also prefer the phone.
So it's not uncommon for the mailbox to be full. What's uncommon is receiving letters with no return address.
Steve's hands tremble as he tears the paper apart.
Dear Steve,
All is good.
I wanted to tell you because I know what you think. Sometimes, I spy your dreams. I do it because you are safe. And because you know them. You care for them. So, when you dream, I can search for them and see how they are doing.
I tried to be good. Respectful of your dreams and memories. But I can't watch you suffer more nightmares and what-ifs.
Don't ever tell Pops that I broke all his rules. I did interfere. I try to dissipate all the nightmares you have when I can. And then, you saw me. And you believed me.
And now you think you are crazy.
You are not.
Thank you for always believing in me, in all of us.
All is good here, in between waterfalls.
Love,
J.H.
Steve breathes. Then, like a waterfall, the tears fall down.
