Work Text:
Sun sat patiently in their room. He was very good at waiting. And being patient. And staying in one place for a long stretch of time. He'd done it for a long time while stuck inside the daycare whenever the kids were gone after all. No matter what anyone said- Moon especially- he could be very good at sitting in one spot and waiting! Most of the time!
Ohhhh! But this was different- he was excited! This would be the first Christmas that he and Moon would get to spend physically together and not just stuck in their tower room with absolutely nothing but a few ratty stolen blankets and some tinsel borrowed from the daycare's decoration supplies.
And most importantly of all, this time they had gifts. Proper ones! Well, mostly. It wasn't unusual for Moon to steal things from the lost and found, since almost no-one ever actually came back for their things. Even stuff that seemed expensive! This meant that Moon was usually able to swipe something to gift to Sun, as meager as it may be- but Sun, unable to leave the daycare like his counterpart, was stuck with whatever he could scavenge and craft from his limited world.
Until! Until! Sun managed to actually sneak one by the staff! The only time he could leave the daycare was when he needed to be taken down to parts and service, which meant a long, long, horrible dark dark dark walk through a bunch of messy damp and dark tunnels below the plex. With the upgrades to their bodies, at some point the staff had switched and a new route was chosen that seemed longer but notably bypassed several of the main areas the endos liked to congregate, so Sun couldn't entirely begrudge the humans for rathering to take the slightly longer path to avoid the wandering bots that didn't always have a great awareness of their surroundings and tended to walk through unsuspecting humans rather than path find around them.
But back to the point, the new path meant that Sun got to see more places than he ever had before and it was such a stroke of luck that one of the rooms they passed to and from parts and service was the main lost and found office. From what Moon had told him, there were several smaller locations scattered around the plex with containers to hold lost items. They would be emptied about twice a week into this larger room for sorting. Clothes, toys, Fazbear merchandise that could be resold, Fazbear merchandise that couldn't be resold, important human things like wallets and documents, valuables like jewellery and watches, and then one for electronics.
Most of the stuff sat there for weeks before someone realised the boxes were getting really full and something should be done about it. And since there was no labelling system to make it easy for the humans who did come back to find their lost stuff, it meant there was a lot of really cool things left unclaimed. Moon was great at sneaking in and getting cool stuff they could use, and it was finally Sun's turn.
On the way back from his maintenance check up, Sun slowed down to increase the distance between himself and the staff member in charge of leading him back to the daycare. The staff stopped when their phone pinged and began texting furiously. Sun glanced quickly between the human and the door, before quickly slipping inside and starting to scan and rummage through everything as fast as he could.
He snagged a few shirts and another Moon plush for his growing collection Moon had been helping him with, much to the other bots embarrassment that Sun liked to have a pile of plushies in his likeness. Just as he was about to leave, his gaze caught on something colourful in the electronics box. Plucking it from the pile, Sun unzipped the small bag and froze, before snapping out of it and shoving all his stolen- uh, rehomed goods into his pants where he wouldn't be caught with them.
Sun slipped back out into the hallway just in time for the staff member to angrily shove their phone back into their pocket like it had personally offended the human. For all Sun knew, maybe it had. What did he know about phone after all? He'd never used one before himself, though he's pretty sure Moon had when he stole one off a ruder security guard so he could hide it somewhere inconvenient for the man to find and retrieve.
Sun shook his head, fussing with the makeshift wrapping paper around Moon's gift. He really hoped Moon liked it. When they'd still been one, Moon had often poked him with questions to ask the kids for him when one of then started talking about a new video game they'd gotten and were playing. Sun struggled so hard for weeks keeping this little console a secret and hiding it from Moon. The shirts he thought Moon would like had been given instantly, but this one? Sun wanted it to be special.
Which meant waiting.
And patience.
A lot of patience.
Sun rocked to his feet and began to pace. He needed something else to do, something else to surprise Moon? But what? He didn’t have any other gifts to give him, or enough time to make him something like he normally resorted to in previous years. Something silly? Something to shock Moon and make him laugh?
An idea began to form in his processor. It was so silly, but it would definitely shock Moon which would be well worth the effort of doing it- especially last minute. Sun quickly checked the time, Moon should be back from his patrols in about half an hour, which should be just enough time. Sun scrambled to get the giant roll of ribbon they had so they could replace the ones they wore easily when they got dirty or damaged, and got to work.
And that was how Sun ended up sitting very still and very patiently in their room waiting for Moon to walk through.
When Moon finally got back, he’d barely started calling a greeting before his voicebox stuttered and crackled with static as he burst out laughing.
Sun grinned from his spot in the middle of their bed- a giant pile of stolen blankets and old naptime mats- and tried to make himself look somewhat more appealing. He’d wrapped and tied himself up in the long lengths of red ribbon and, with extreme difficulty, tied off an impressive looking bow. Moon’s present sat balanced precariously on one knee and wobble dangerously as he shifted.
“What- what are you-” Moon gasped, crouching on the floor as his fans whirred noisily and his snickers and giggles caught with lingering static.
“Well, I only got you one present so I wanted to make sure you at least had something big to unwrap to!” Sun said, tone as serious as he could make it while struggling not to laugh along with Moon- especially when his statement set off a whole new round of laughter as Moon collapsed to the floor and held himself.
It took a good few minutes before Moon had collected himself enough to crawl over and begin to ‘unwrap’ Sun from his self imposed confines. He was shaking the entire time, struggling to get control of his mirth, but this was exactly what Sun had been hoping for. Once he was finally free, Sun handed him his actual present and Moon produced his own little wrapped gift from nowhere.
Eagerly, Sun tore into the wrapping and squealed at the hand stitched little plush of them both. Half of it represented Sun, and the other half Moon. He hugged it to himself and then threw himself at Moon, thanking him profusely. It was perfect for his collection! Then, Sun started badgering Moon to hurry up and open his gift.
Moon froze when he saw what it was, optics widening to their maximum setting. Almost reverently, he unzipped the carry case and pulled out the little gaming console and its cord, a few game cards making plastic clicks as they were displaced. Moon then directed his wide eyed stare at Sun, completely shocked.
“How did you get this?”
“Lost and found!” Sun crowed. “I snuck in when the staff was busy texting and got it then.”
“But you haven’t been down there in weeks!”
“I know! When I got us those shirts, I found this too. You have no idea how hard it was to keep it secret,” Sun whined. “I wanted to give it to you so so so badly! But I wanted it to be a surprise for Christmas since you always get me nice things but I never can.”
Moon just shook his head and grinned, quickly powering on the device and picking through the games. He ended up choosing a little farming game they could both play. They spent hours just fishing, frequently letting their characters pass out because they forgot they needed to get to bed before 2am. They sat snuggled close in their makeshift nest of a bed, heads pressed together to share the tiny screen and even tinier controllers. But it was fun, and it was the best Christmas they’d had in a long while.
Eventually, Sun felt himself growing tired. His battery was low from all the excitement but he didn’t want to get up to grab his cord just yet. Instead he let himself lean against Moon as he swayed side to side with his happiness at finally getting to play a video game and found himself drifting into rest mode. The last thing he remembers before powering down entirely is being moved and Moon saying something to him. It sounded very sweet and even if Sun couldn’t parse the words, he knew he returned the sentiment wholeheartedly.
