Work Text:
"Evelyn.." Chara looks around tentatively, and Frisk grins in surprise, looking up at her from the torn stuffed animal. "Evelyn!" It was a surprise for her to speak up now, since she had been mostly.. well, not quiet. She'd talk, but not directly to him, instead choosing to narrate just about everything.
"Why do we bother to stay?" The older child murmured, staring at the box of toys on the floor- well, more like glaring.
"Why are you runnin' away?" Frisk's grin falters at that, and he tilts his head- why shouldn't they stay for a bit? Toriel, the nice woman, was very motherly giving him some pie- and a room with toys!
"Don't you feel like severing?" Chara's voice lowers still, and Frisk smiles tentatively after some moments. He can't really.. answer that. If Chara left after what they'd been through so far, he might not survive the trip back home, because she's been a huge help, teaching him how to dodge the flower-thing's attacks. ..even if she had to temporarily possess him for a moment to show him how.
Gesturing around the room, Frisk holds the torn stuffy together and gestures for Chara to share his mind once more- to see what he sees: good food, toys, and a warm bed. "Everything's just come together at last." His smile falters when his new friend instead seems pained, and looks away before floating to the corner and slumping down against it with her back to the wall.
Chara doesn't even look up, resting her head on her knees. "-It's broken, I don't want to play.."
She can't help but see Asriel with the same, broken stuffed animal..
We grew up closer than most. (Asriel helps Chara up from the garden and guides her to his parents, who patch her up kindly.)
Closer than anything, closer than anything. (Asriel talks to Chara and she's awkward, but then Asriel makes a goat pun straight face and Chara can't help but giggle.)
Shared our bed and wore the same clothes. (It shows Asriel climbing into Chara's bed because he had a nightmare, and then in the morning, Chara picking out matching clothes for them 'so a piece of me is always with you and you can be as brave as me'.)
Talked about everything, spoke about so many things. (It shows the duo plotting something nefarious and giggling beneath the dinner-table, and then them stealing part of the pie their mum made.)
What shall we wear tonight? What shall we eat today? (They happily discuss what compromises they should make, since they wanna always do matching things together.)
Can we go ice skating? But we just did that yesterday. (Asriel proposes going down to the newly-established Snowdin, and Chara says she's bored of that.)
Should we be firemen? Can we be astronauts? (They're posing and playing pretend in their room, Chara explaining human-concepts to her brother.)
What if they find us? They're not looking anyway.. (Asriel and Chara talking together about their.. bad plan while they stand in a patch of flowers. Chara is in the forefront of the scene, and you can't see her eyes or read her face. Asriel looks quite anxious.)
Evelyn, Evelyn (Asriel and Chara talking together in his head after he absorbs her Soul.)
Why do we bother to stay? (Chara tries to comfort Asriel when he Asriel hesitates to leave the Underground.)
Why are you running away? (Chara is frustrated and horrified when Asriel won't fight against the bad humans, because she realizes they'll both truly die.)
Don't you feel like severing? (Asriel asks Chara, because while they're bound together, she can feel his wounds.)
Everything's just come together at last (Chara lamenting how close they were to getting away if Asriel had just used his powers.)
It's broken, I don't want to play (Asriel, shakily placing a flower with the petals torn in Chara's hair before he dusts.)
(The scene changes to Frisk and ghost-Chara right after the restaurant-scene with Sans.)
"Fill my glass, let's drink a toast." Frisk tries to offer Chara his glass of juice, but it goes right through her hand, and his smile falters.
"This is our birthday-" He continues weakly- when they met, Chara told Frisk that she never knew her birthday, so he suggested that maybe they could share one. Just like Asriel did.
"-So why are we weeping?" They're both teary-eyed for partially different reasons at this point. Frisk is a small child, shaken up immensely by his 'talk' with Sans about him dying if he didn't make the promise to Toriel. And Chara is realizing that if Frisk dies, she might die, too. And if she doesn't, the other possibility might be her being a ghost forever, wandering the Underground- it horrifies her.
"At your side, I feel like a ghost.." The scene is Chara floating behind Frisk as he talks and laughs with various characters. "I wake up first, and I stare at you sleeping." The scene changes to Chara against's Frisk's back on the bed, silently crying and curling in on herself as she tries and fails to hold or hug him. One of his eyes open, but Chara doesn't see from his position.
"What shall we wear tonight? What shall we eat today?" Frisk is grinning up at Chara optimistically- he thinks that she might want to be included in some of the decision-making. Neither of them mention last night- Chara because she thinks Frisk doesn't know, and Frisk because he doesn't know what to say.
"Do you think I should marry him?" Frisk jokingly asks Chara, gesturing to Mettaton during the beginning of the showdown. "But we just met him yesterday." Chara halfheartedly jokes back, staring at the Soul in Mettaton's chest.
"Should we be movie stars? Will we be millionaires? I want to be famous-" Frisk, being a small child, gets too excited over the possibility.
"They're watching us anyway." If Chara didn't know better, she feels like Mettaton's staring right at her. It might have to do with the fact that he was a ghost before, but the robot looks away quickly, so that's up for reader/viewer interpretation.
(The scene changes to Toriel and Asgore after their children died.)
Evelyn, Evelyn
Why do we bother to stay?
Why are you running away?
Don't you feel like severing?
Everything's just come together at last
It's broken, I don't want to play
(The scene changes back to Chara and Frisk. At this point, Frisk is getting sick of Chara- he isn't used to sharing his Soul with somebody else, it's uncomfortable that he technically never gets true privacy. He's a young child, and can NOT be blamed for getting upset at Chara.)
We grew up so very close
A parasite needs a host
I'm only trying to do what is best for us
Well, I never asked for this, I never wanted this
All that I want is some time to myself
Looking in your eyes, I'm coming home
Just get away from me, please just stop touching me
You're always trying to be somebody else
Now I realize I'm not alone
Well, you're only scared of me
But you never cared for me
Why don't you let me free?
'Cause you'd never dare to be
'Cause you never listen, you're always insisting
I'm just reminiscing (just stop reminiscing)
I feel something missing
I just want you here with me (I just want my privacy)
God, can't we just get along? (God, won't you leave me alone?)
Evelyn, Evelyn (Chara disappears from view, and Frisk shakily walks away.)
Evelyn, Evelyn (A montage of Frisk facing various Monsters and sparing them without Chara at his side)
