A Lesson Well Learned

Summary:

Minerva has had enough of hearing people talk about her and Albus's great love. Time for everyone to see what they've been (willfully) blind to!

Work Text:

Minerva flopped face down on their bed, then turned her head to the side to look at her wife. “Poppy,” she groaned, “I’m at my wit’s end with these students! Year after year, they insist on discussing whether or not Albus and I are together. That man is as straight as I am!” Minerva rolled over onto her back. “It’s not like we’ve done anything to hide it either. I’m in the Hospital Wing in one of the two forms they know me by anytime I get time to myself! We sit together at every meal and sometimes share food. How much more can we do to make these idiot students realize we’re together without putting on a juvenile display?!”

Poppy smiled and lay down next to her wife. “Minnie, they’re teenagers. They probably won’t realize anything unless someone shoves it in their face.” A smirk started playing at the corners of her mouth, and her eyes gained a mischievous look.

“I recognize that look,” Minerva said, propping herself up on her elbow and smiling. “Last time you looked like that, you spiked the punch with a particularly effective combination of appearance-altering and gas-causing potions and didn’t warn me in advance. What’s your beautiful mind cooking up?”

With a soft chuckle, Poppy outlined her idea. The two discussed, then reminisced about past Valentines’ Days and the many more they hoped to have together. They fell asleep holding hands and with smiles on their faces.

With the house elves’ help, the first step of their plan was put into place during breakfast the next morning. As usual, Poppy and Minerva walked in together, headed to their seats, and sat down, loudly discussing plans for their upcoming 60th Bonding Anniversary. The Great Hall gradually fell silent as whispers rippled out amongst the students. The whispers traveled at the speed of spellfire, and slowly nearly all the students turned to look at the couple at the Head Table who were seemingly oblivious to their curious and shocked looks.

Near the end of the meal, Minerva stood and cleared her throat. “It has come time for me to clarify the nature of my relationship with Albus. I have not, nor will I ever be attracted to Headmaster Dumbledore, no matter how good of friends we are. Please spread the word. To ensure that the message really finds a hold in your hearts, you will only be able to physically feel the way I do about Albus for the next week. If you have concerns, you may direct them to my partner, Madame Pomphrey. Thank you.”

She sat back down and exchanged an excited glance with her wife. She was sure they’d be hearing some very interesting tales about their relationship throughout the next month or so, but at least they’d be about the right relationship. Besides, patrols were sure to be cut down for the next week, since the hormonal teenagers would have no way to act on their feelings, which meant she got more time with her wife! Poppy took Minerva’s hand and squeezed it lightly, then stood to ready the Hospital Wing for the day.

Albus leaned over, eyes twinkling. “Well done,” he congratulated, before he too left.

Minerva finished her bacon in peace, satisfied to know that she’d at least solidly imparted one piece of knowledge to her students today.
