Work Text:
- K.LEE : Need some extra cash?
It all started with a text message from an unfamiliar profile asking if he needed money—coincidentally, right after he had been searching for ways to make some more. Initially, Kim Soleum pondered leaving the chat room, the whole ordeal seeming a bit too suspicious for his liking, but what if this was the real deal?
Kim Soleum immediately summoned Braun through the ‘Good Friend Plushie,’ hoping to get a fresh perspective. Could this possibly be a creepypasta-related phenomenon?
⁃ Oh, Friend!
Kim Soleum briefed him on the matter—An unfamiliar figure offering a large sum of money.
⁃ How suspicious! But isn’t a touch of curiosity followed by suspicion the very essence of the show?
⁃ Especially if it’s accompanied by some sparkling gold!
‘Well, he’s right about one thing. You can never go wrong with more money.’
‘In that case…’
⁃ Kim Soleum : May I ask who this is?
The mysterious profile claimed he was ‘Assistant Manager Lee Kangheon from C-Squad,’ which baffled Kim Soleum, because why would an elite member reach out to him out of all people, and openly reveal his identity for that matter?
⁃ K.LEE : Heard you turned down A-squad’s offer today!!! lolololol
⁃ K.LEE : I’ve never seen such a capable rookie lolol
Sentences were pouring out one after the other at an almost inhuman rate. Was this guy some keyboard gremlin? How’s he typing so fast? Kim Soleum sent a greeting.
⁃ Kim Soleum : It’s very nice to meet you, Assistant Manager Lee Kangheon.
⁃ K.LEE : No need to be so formal. If we run into each other at work, let’s grab a meal sometime. I know a great charcoal-grilled chicken place nearby! haha
⁃ K.LEE: Oops, too chatty, aren’t I? Anyway, the reason I reached out!
The mood tensed.
⁃ K.LEE : You need cash, right?
“…”
Well.
And that’s how he ended up here. The Salmon Market.
Of course, it took some persuading from the other side, plus being compared to Squad Leader Lee Jaheon (does he really act all that much like him??), but the user ultimately ended up sending him a link to the website. Right after opening it, he easily identified it as a second-hand trading site.
[Dried Mermaid Meat for Sale (certified by Han Nuri Jade)]
[Looking For: ‘Bloodlust Tile’ Pieces (Untainted)]
[$$Rare Locations of Misfortune Vending Machines! Verified info available!$$]
A series of listings flooded the screen, each one more suspicious than the last.
This website…
‘It’s full of scams.’
As he scrolled, Kim Soleum quickly got a general gist of the site. It’s an occult marketplace, which clearly, is open to anyone and everyone. There didn’t seem to be much professional credibility…
[selling amulet that grants any and all wishes!!! taking highest bid, you pay first (1000% real!!$@&%!)]
Scratch that. There didn’t seem to be any at all.
Braun sighed, almost mournfully.
⁃ Ah, public platforms inevitably lose their credibility over time! To prevent that requires considerable effort, but…this place feels purposefully neglected.
‘Tell me about it…’
A lot of the stuff here is obviously fake; listings only an amateur would fall for. And even the stuff that seemed at least somewhat real went for sky-high prices, nothing an average salaryman would ever dream of buying. But then again, why would a normal person be on here anyway…?
‘Could I actually sell something here? If I cross the line, I’ll definitely get flagged for an audit…’
‘I need security.’
Kim Soleum logged out of his current account and created a new account under the username [BlueFriend].
⁃ ‘Friend’? Oh! Did you think of me? My, how touching!
‘Well, I really just combined whatever came to mind, but whatever floats your boat…’
“Done.”
- Hooh, so you’re creating a new identity to avoid tracking!
“Exactly.”
He’ll use this account for items a Daydream Inc. employee shouldn’t have or for things that might be flagged during an audit.
This way, no purchases can be tracked back to him.
Now, he had to think about what he could actually sell. He can’t resell stuff from the Alien Shop… if he tried to sell those high-quality items on this amateur site, chaos would most likely ensue.
He scrolled through the latest posts on Salmon Marked listlessly, looking for something low-key that he could still sell for a profit.
[Buying: Food from Paranormal Phenomena]
‘Oh?’

[Buying: Food from Paranormal Phenomena]
For research purposes
Strong preference for food originating from Fracture-sanctioned phenomena (according to the Supernatural Disaster Management Bureau’s classification)
40.0
——————————————————
⁃ there he goes again, this punk
⁃ aaah ‘Looking for food for research purposes. Fracture-sanctioned phenomena only. (Pretentious glasses push)’ lolololololol
⁃ Is this guy a bot? He posts every day.
⁃ hey occult otaku, pls get out of your world. wtf even is the supernatural disaster management bureau’s classification huh
The comments were flooded with mocking or teasing remarks, but this guy…
‘He’s definitely the real deal!’
The <Supernatural Disaster Management Bureau> is one of the three major forces along with Daydream Inc. in <Dark Exploration Records>. They’re a government agency dedicated to handling paranormal events. In addition, the bureau classifies creepypasta risks by ‘sanction’, hence the ‘Fracture-sanctioned phenomena only’ requirement.
So if this guy knows what that is…
‘He clearly knows his stuff.’
Kim Soleum’s eyes drifted towards the price.
40.0… That’s 40 million won.
With a price that high, even those unfamiliar with the specifics may still try to contact them out of sheer curiosity.
⁃ Wow, but it’s 40 million won… Has anyone actually contacted them?
└ i tried bc i thought they’re legit, but after asking a few questions, they just ghosted me LOL
└ everyone’s been left on read. just a poser. nah nahh im good
‘No, it’s probably just because their food didn’t meet the requirements, so the person just ignored them…’
Although they were out of luck, Kim Soleum just so happened to have mysterious food with unknown effects, even if he didn’t dare consume it himself.
In fact, he even had two packs.
<Blood Soda Churros>
It was the snack gifted to him by the blue dragon mascot of the theme park.
⁃ Ah, that unsavory food!
It wasn’t that unsavory…
Anyway, the mascot would surely understand if he put these to good use, right? Even a good child needs some money sometimes!
[BlueFriend : Hello there sir/ma’am ^^ I have the paranormal-origin food item you’re looking for!]
Message sent!
‘Now to sit back and wait—‘
[T : What kind of food exactly?]
Damn, that was fast.
Well, he had two options.
He could show off his expertise to build trust by hinting that he knew about the Bureau’s classifications.
Or…
[BlueFriend : It’s kind of like churros? I’m honestly not sure… I got it under some strange circumstances, and honestly, keeping it feels a bit unsettling. I also really need the money. Could we maybe meet so you can check it out? If it fits your needs, you can take it from there.]
Yep. That’s right. He could play clueless and let the buyer make the call. Which fortunately for him, worked.
They agreed to meet near Exit 5 of Gwanghwamun station at 4:30 P.M. tomorrow. Thankfully, that marked the beginning of the weekend.
⁃ I see you’ve managed to strike a deal, Friend! I’m so proud!
Is it really something to be all that proud of…?
⁃ Of course, I assume you’re not just going to go meet them looking same-old, same-old?
Ah, that’s right.
‘I need to conceal my identity… Plus, Bureau agents aren't exactly fond of Daydream employees. The guy could easily track it back to me if they see me.’
‘But would a simple coverup really pull it off?’
“How should I hide my identity?” Kim Soleum inquired, looking to Braun for some insight.
⁃ You should go incognito! Like in the spy films!
‘Are you trying to sabotage me…?’
“I don’t want to look suspicious, neither do I want it to look like I’m waiting around to deal drugs!” Kim Soleum groaned. “I just want to appear like a normal, unsuspecting, and innocent citizen.”
⁃ Hmmm… Well, there is something that is bound to conceal your identity.
“Braun, I swear to god if you say something stupid—“
⁃ Just change your gender!
“…”
What…?
“You mean like…” A pause, “physically change my gender? With some kind of transformation item? Where would I even get that….?” Kim Soleum stuttered.
‘I mean it’d certainly work, but it’s just…’
⁃ No, Friend! It would be far too much work to find one, especially since your meeting is tomorrow! All you have to do is dress up as one. Simple, right?
‘So like…cosplay…?’
“I don’t even have any clothes or makeup. Let alone a wig. Hell, I wouldn’t even know how to put any of it on.”
⁃ Mmm, how about asking that friend of yours for help? What was her name… Oh that’s right! Go Youngeun, was it?
“Go Youngeun-ssi…?” He muttered.
‘Sure, she’d definitely know how to help me, but…would she?’
⁃ Well, it’s totally alright if you don’t want to do it. Of course, you could just risk the chance of your identity being exposed and go in looking like you’re about to make a very, very suspicious transaction—
“Okay, okay! I’ll try it, I guess.”
⁃ Great, Friend! Now why don’t you go ahead and give Ms. Youngeun a call?
Kim Soleum gulped and nodded hesitantly.
With shaky hands, Kim Soleum opened his phone and clicked on Go Youngeun’s contact.
‘Here goes nothing…’
The phone rung for not even 5 seconds before Go Youngeun’s voice resounded from the other end.
“Ah, yes, Kim Soleum-ssi? You really surprised me, calling this late…”
Kim Soleum licked his dry lips.
“Hello, Go Yeongeun-ssi. I hope you’re doing well. I know this is sudden, but are you willing to meet with me tomorrow morning?”
“Oh, of course! Why? Is something wrong?”
Her voice was laced with worry.
‘Just as expected from Go Yeongeun-ssi. She’s so caring!’
“No, nothings wrong, don’t worry. There’s just a favor I need to ask of you.”
“Oh,” she sighed in relief. “Well then, what time were you thinking, Kim Soleum-ssi?”
Kim Soleum pondered. He needed to be at the station by 4:30 P.M., so in order to definitely make it on time…
“How about we meet at the nearby donut shop, where you usually get your coffee, at around 10:30 A.M.?”
That should be early enough to play it safe. After all, he has no idea how long it would take to get ready. That is, if she says yes.
“Sure! I’ll see you tomorrow morning, Kim Soleum-ssi.”
“Yes. Have a good night.”
Right when the call hung up, Kim Soleum sighed in relief, his shoulders sagging with the release of built up tension.
⁃ Seems you’ve got yourself a date, Mr. Roe Deer!
“It’s not a date!”
—————————
Kim Soleum anxiously fidgeted with the hems of his sleeves, his eyes periodically glancing towards the ticking clock on the wall of the donut shop.
10:29…
“…”
‘10:30.’
Then, almost like magic, Go Yeongeun burst through the door, exactly on time. Her eyes flitted through the store, until they rested on Kim Soleum. Her face lit up as she walked over, a kind smile gracing her lips.
“Kim Soleum-ssi.”
Kim Soleum nodded.
“Go Yeongeun-ssi. You look nice today.” His eyes glanced at her peach sweater and her hair, which was done into a bun.
“Thank you! You as well!” She beamed, returning the compliment.
He looked down at his own plain, boring old navy sweatshirt which looked like it lived through both world wars and cringed.
‘She really is a good liar…’
Go Yeongeun smoothly slid into the booth, taking her seat directly across from him
“Anyways, what did you call me here for, Kim Soleum-ssi? Whatever it is, I’ll do what I can to help!” Her eyes shone in determination, and Kim Soleum sunk back in the face of her intense gaze. Kim Soleum’s face flushed in embarrassment as he thought about what he was about to ask.
‘You know what? You can do this. Just keep it simple. A nice, straightforward question.’
“Can you help me crossdress?” Kim Soleum blurted out, his face an almost vibrant red, betraying his stoic expression.
Her face froze, as if she was computing he question, when suddenly her hand flew to her mouth with a loud gasp.
“Kim Soleum-ssi! You…!”
“…?”
She shook her head and reached forward to grab Kim Soleum’s hands, enveloping them with her own.
“Don’t worry, Kim Soleum-ssi, I will fully and wholeheartedly support you in this endeavor! I will make you the prettiest girl to ever grace this planet!” She shook his hands up and down dramatically, her nostrils flaring in newfound determination.
“Oh, uh…thanks…?”
‘Well, that went better than expected.’
But…
Why does he feel like there’s some kind of a misunderstanding here…?
—————————
Huff… Huff…
“Come on Kim Soleum-ssi! Only a couple of steps left!” Go Yeongeun turned around, pausing at the top of the stairs to look back at Kim Soleum.
‘Easy for you to say…’
Kim Soleum panted as he lugged several bags up the apartment stairs, 2 hanging on his left arm and 3 on his right.
“Go Yeongeun-ssi…” Kim Soleum sighed wearily as he reached the top of steps. “Do we really need all this stuff…? It’s only for tod—“
“Of course!” She gestured him over to his apartment door. “This is yours, right?”
“Yeah.” He walked over and nodded, grabbing a key from his pocket and unlocking the door, all while balancing the bags. He looked over at Go Yeongeun.
“Let’s enter.”
On the way in, Kim Soleum couldn’t help but glance over towards the shoe rack.
He sighed in relief.
‘Thank god, that bastard’s shoes aren’t here.’
“Wow Kim Soleum-ssi, I’ve never seen your place before! It’s surprisingly neat!”
He chuckled lightly, “Let’s head to my room. It’s to your left.” Kim Soleum slid his shoes off, placing them next to Go Yeongeun’s. She was currently examining the place with newfound curiosity, as if she’d seen an alien (somewhere else, a certain lizard sneezes).
Right when they entered his room, he set down the bags and stretched. Go Yeongeun quickly dove into them, pulling out several articles of clothing and throwing them behind her.
“Yes…this, this…” She took out something yellow in color and closely inspected it. “Hm… And this too!”
“What are you doing?” Kim Soleum questioned, taking a seat on the floor next to her after setting the dormant pink rabbit plushie on the bedside table.
“Choosing an outfit for you, of course! What else?”
“Yeah but…” He glanced at the growing mountain of clothes behind her. “Why did we buy so many in the first place?”
She paused and looked at him like he was speaking another language. “For future use. Why?”
“Wait, why—“
“Alright, I think this should be good.” She set the bags aside. “We’ll see how this looks and go from there!”
She then looked over at Kim Soleum. “Of course, we need to make sure you’re fully prepared. And by prepared, I mean as smooth as a baby’s bum!”
“Smooth…? What do you mean?” He tilted his head in confusion.
She smiled and pulled out a packaged razor from one of the bags. “Well, Kim Soleum-ssi… how hairy are you?”
“Well I suppose I have a normal amount of hair here and there, but—“
She abruptly stood up and walked over to his bathroom. When he didn’t follow, she turned around and looked at him with an innocent look on her face.
“Aren’t you coming?”
He gulped. “You don’t mean…”
She smiled gently.
Suddenly, Go Yeongeun didn’t look so kind anymore.
—————————
“Oh come on, quit sulking. We’ve still got more work to do!”
Kim Soleum stared at his bare, pale legs wistfully. He felt like a part of his masculinity had been savagely stripped from him.
“What now…?” He sighed woefully.
“Why, you still need to try on the clothes!” She neatly set out the clothes on the bed. “Now quit being a baby, and go try these on.” Then, under her breath, “Jeez, you men and your fragile masculinity…”
Kim Soleum, resigning himself to his fate, grabbed the clothes and began to walk towards the bathroom.
“Oh, one more thing!” Go Yeongeun abruptly called out, then turned to rummage through one of the bags. She pulled out something reminiscent of a…bra?
“Here, this is a heavily padded and stuffed bra with silicone-inserts to create the illusion of a women’s chest.” She handed it to Kim Soleum, who grabbed it cautiously.
“Isn’t this too much?” He asked shakily.
“Nothing’s ever too much.” She replied, her face almost scarily serious.
Kim Soleum nodded slowly and headed to the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
“If you need any help putting anything on, just ask me!” She shouted from beyond the door, taking a seat on his bed.
After a while of scrolling through her phone, she heard a frustrated yell from behind the door.
“Damn it… Why are there so many goddamn straps!?”
She chuckled. “Need help?”
“Oh, no. I’m… Urk—!” A beat passed. “I’m, ugh, good! I think I’ve figured it out…”
“If you’re sure…”
After a couple minutes of muffled grunts and worrisome bangs, a shaky voice rung out from the bathroom.
“Okay, I think I’m done.”
“Let’s see it!” Go Yeongeun stood up, excited to see the outfit she threw together.
The door creaked open, and behind it emerged Kim Soleum.
He was fitted in a soft, yellow, below-the-knee dress, the kind that flows weightlessly around his legs. His waist was cinched with a belt, tied into a small bow resting off to the side, his figure radiating a gentle charm. The top of his dress featured crisscross straps across his chest, holding up the dress and disappearing behind his neck.
Over the dress was a white cropped cardigan, falling just above where the bow sat, giving a light, cozy vibe. The sleeves were long and light, flowing around his wrists.
The flats on his feet were light and comfortable, matching the rest of his outfit without adding any more inches to his height.
Kim Soleum fidgeted with the hem of cardigan. “Well…?”
Go Yeongeun gaped but quickly snapped out her trance, walking over to Kim Soleum excitedly.
“I haven’t even done your hair extensions or your makeup yet, but you already look stunning!” She picked at his clothes, smoothing down any imperfections. Her face was lit up in adoration.
Kim Soleum blushed at the attention. “Ah… thank you, Go Yeongeun-ssi. It’s all thanks to you.” He rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment, tagging on a question. “But, what do you mean by makeup…? I don’t recall buying any.”
After tidying up his outfit, Go Yeongeun stepped back and admired her work. “Right, it had totally slipped my mind when we went shopping. Can you believe that? It’s the most important thing! But luckily for you…” She turned around and dug through her personal bag. “I usually bring my own makeup purse for touch-ups, so we can use that for now! I think we’re similar shades anyway.” She pulled out a pink and white cosmetic bag, decorated with floral patterns, then set it on the bed.
“Well, before that, let’s do your hair, shall we?” Go Yeongeun held up long, black hair extensions in her hands, her mouth stretching into a wide grin.
‘I guess we’re really doing this huh…’
Kim Soleum glanced down at his chest, which now resembled that of a woman, and blushed shamefully.
‘I’m already too far gone at this point anyway…’
—————————
Kim Soleum was sitting at his desk while Go Yeongeun stood behind him, adding the hair extensions to his scalp.
“Ouch—! A little gentler, please, Go Yeongeun-ssi…”
“Ah, I’m sorry, Kim Soleum-ssi!” Another tug and a pained wince. “I haven’t really done this before, so I’m kind of praying it’ll turn out good.”
“Well, I’m sure whatever you do will end up looking perfect.” Kim Soleum grinned through the pain. “Also, I want to say thank you again for doing this for me. Really. You have no idea how much this means to me.”
Go Yeongeun blushed and brushed a piece of hair behind her ear. “No, really, it’s no problem! You’ve done so much for me, it’s just…” A sigh, “I want to do something for you too.”
Kim Soleum smiled softly.
“And… done!” She backed up and turned Kim Soleum around, a proud look gracing her expression. “Beautiful! And one last thing…”
She dug into her pocket, and pulled out a hairclip that looked like…Braun?
The clip was shaped like a rabbit head, but instead of being pink, it was white in color.
“I’ve noticed that pink rabbit plushie you carry around often, and while we were out shopping, I spotted this cute rabbit-shaped clip! I thought you’d like it.” She beamed and clipped it onto his bang. “There. Perfect.”
She grabbed a mirror from the table and shoved it in his face. “Take a look, Rapunzel!”
His long, black hair fell over his front, flowing past his shoulders. He retained his normal bangs, with the addition of some added pieces, which all served to frame his face gently. His eyes glanced towards the rabbit-clip in his hair, and he smiled softly. Kim Soleum blew a strand from his face.
“Wow, Go Yeongeun-ssi. You really are good at everything.” He said, genuinely surprised.
“Aww, thanks! You flatter me.” She reached over and grabbed her makeup bag. “Now time for the good stuff!”
—————————
The front door clicked open, revealing a brown-haired man clad with a black eyepatch.
He peeked through the crack in the door before silently creeping through, as if he wasn’t supposed to be there.
It was Baek Saheon.
He glanced towards the shoe rack on instinct, his expression shriveling up upon noticing the familiar pair of shoes.
‘Damn it…that psycho’s home!’
The whole reason he left in the first place was to get away from him!
Then, he noticed another pair of shoes lying next to them, noticeably smaller in comparison.
‘Fuck, did the bastard bring a girl home or something?’
On cue, he heard some muffled noises coming from Kim Soleum’s room. A shiver ran down his spine.
‘Well. Best to not get involved with that.’
If somebody willing went home with that guy, then they must be crazy too!
After reaching a consensus, Baek Saheon slid off his shoes as silently as he could, and proceeded to tiptoe towards his room.
BANG!
A loud bang resounded from Kim Soleum’s room. Baek Saheon froze in place, his head slowly turning towards the door.
“…”
No.
He shouldn’t worry about that guy. It’s none of his business anyway.
He sighed, and resumed his steps.
CRASH!
Another bang, followed by a high-pitched gasp. One that definitely belonged to a girl.
Baek Saheon paused, sweat dripping down his face.
No way…
‘Unless that person DIDN’T willingly go home with Kim Soleum!’
‘Fuck, I may be selfish, but I’m not heartless!!’
Without thinking twice, he burst through the door, and yelled at the top of his lungs: “Kim Soleum! I knew you were a psychotic bastard, but this is—!”
Then, in the midst of his outburst, he opened his squinted eyes to see…
‘Eh…?’
Go Yeongeun was standing over a container of blush, which had shattered and laid its contents on the floor. She was looking at him in absolute shock.
Next to her was…huh?
‘Who the fuck is that.’
“Baek Saheon!” Go Yeongeun exclaimed, a menacing smile creeping onto her face. “I see you’ve got a talent for making a grand entrance!” Her voice was laced with sarcasm.
She looked towards the black-haired woman next to her, who was staring at him like he’d just seen a ghost.
“Kim Soleum-ssi, I’m so sorry about that. My hand slipped and I dropped the blush. Thankfully, we’re about done with the look anyway!” Her previously dark expression morphed into a kind and gentle one. The switch-up was almost terrifying.
“N—no way…” Baek Saheon took a hesitant step back, his expression baffled. “That’s Kim Soleum!? That crazy psych—“
“Baek Saheon.” A deep voice, which contrasted the gentle look of the person it came from, cut through the air.
Baek Saheon gulped and immediately zipped his mouth.
‘I thought the fucker was weird enough, but this…?’
Kim Soleum smiled softly. Then, slowly, he brought a finger to his lips, as if to shush him, and then—with deliberate calm—dragged his hand across his throat in one sharp movement; a cutthroat gesture.
Don’t you dare ever speak of this to anyone, or I’ll kill you.
Baek Saheon squeaked, “Yes, sir!” He hastily bolted out the door, slamming it shut in his wake.
And if anybody noticed the slight blush decorating the tips of his ears, that’s nobody else’s business but his.
—————————
After the door shut, Go Yeongeun groaned in frustration.
“And good riddance! The nerve of that man, I swear to god, when I—“
Kim Soleum quickly interjected. “Don’t worry about him. Also, just leave the blush there, I’ll clean it later.”
She took a deep breath. “Thank you, Kim Soleum-ssi. I’m sorry, I lost my cool there for a second.”
Kim Soleum laughed lightly.
‘You and me both…’
While Kim Soleum mourned his dignity and prayed to everything holy that Baek Saheon keeps his snout shut, Go Yeongeun added the finishing touches.
“Alright, Kim Soleum-ssi! I’m done!” She took a big step back and admired her work.
“Oh my god…” She gasped, “I already knew your features were on the softer side, but this…!” A light coat of blush spread across her face. “Even I’m flustered!l
Kim Soleum pursed his lips, trying to hold back an embarrassed grin. He grabbed the mirror from the table and held it in front of his face. “Come on, it can’t be that—“
‘…Damn. Who is this woman!?’
Even he has to admit, he looks like a whole new person! He looks completely and utterly like a girl.
‘If this is what Baek Saheon saw… I might have to gouge out his remaining eyeball.’
“Seriously, Kim Soleum-ssi… You look gorgeous, and I’m not even going to lie, far prettier than any girl I’ve met.”
“Is that a compliment?” He joked lightheartedly.
“Yes!” She began wiping imaginary tears. “You’ve come so far…”
“Go Yeongeun-ssi… Please stop teasing me…” Kim Soleum groaned, burying his flushed face in his hands.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Kim Soleum-ssi. You’re just too cute!” Go Yeongeun giggled. “Anyway, are you going to go out like this?”
Kim Soleum shrugged. “Yeah, you could say that.”
“Well, if any slimy men try anything with you, call me and I’ll personally give them a piece of my mind.”
Kim Soleum flushed. “Oh, I don’t think anyone would even attempt to do so, but thank you.”
Go Yeongeun stared at him for a while. “You really aren’t all that self-aware, are you?”
“Ah, huh…?”
She sighed and slung her bag over her shoulder. “Well, I’ve got to get going now. I’ll see you at work, Kim Soleum-ssi. Don’t have too much fun now!”
Kim Soleum nodded. “You as well, Go Yeongeun-ssi. Again, thank you so much for your help.”
Kim Soleum saw Go Yeongeun out then walked back to his room, plopping down on his bed.
He glanced at the clock.
‘An hour until we have to meet…’
Kim Soleum groaned loudly, still in disbelief.
“…”
‘Hold on.’
Kim Soleum coughed.
‘My voice… it’s still…’
“Ah, ah, ah… hello—urk.” Kim Soleum attempted to raise his voice a couple octaves, but instead of sounding feminine, he sounded more like a dying hyena.
“Ah, shit.” He may be able to change his looks, but he can’t change his voice!
Kim Soleum glanced at the rabbit plush sitting on the bedside table.
‘Maybe Braun will know what to do.’
Kim Soleum quickly set the ‘Good Friend’ plushie under the bed and turned off the light. Using the shadow trick, he summoned Braun with a small flashlight.
⁃ Hello, Friend—! Oh? What’s this?
“Hey Braun.”
⁃ Oh my! Mr. Roe Deer, you look absolutely stunning!
Kim Soleum smiled weakly.
‘Being complimented by a Darkness feels a little uncomfortable…’
⁃ Honestly, even I would fall for you!
“Haha…hah… Please don’t joke around like that Braun…” Kim Soleum forced out a fake laugh.
‘Seriously. You’re scaring me.’
⁃ No, really! You know what? You should come on my show dressed like this sometime—I’m sure the audience would absolutely adore you!
“You really think so…?” Kim Soleum just smiled and attempted to dodge the invitation. He didn’t want to outright reject the guy out of fear of angering him.
⁃ Oh, I know so. And if they didn’t, I would just incinerate them! Haha!
Gulp.
⁃ Anyway, I’m guessing you didn’t summon me just to show me your new look, I presume?
“You guessed right. I have a problem.”
⁃ And what is that?
“My voice.”
⁃ Ah… I see how that could pose a dillema.
“What should I do?”
⁃ Well…an item would certainly do the trick.
“An item? True, but where would I even get—“ Kim Soleum abruptly halted in realization.
“The Alien Shop.”
⁃ Alien Shop? What a unique name with a sense of style! Is it an online store?
Kim Soleum grabbed Braun and got up, walking over to the desktop. He set him down on the desk and took a seat.
“Yep, it’s online. The website itself looks like a flyer.”
⁃ Aha! Is that so?
Braun exclaimed cheerfully.
⁃ I’m intrigued to see the shop that my friend frequents so often…
<Space Shopping Mall>
※ Amazing items from outer space ※~!!
>> I’ll take a look at the items
⁃ …
⁃ …?!?!?!
⁃ What is this? This is just a hideous flyer, completely devoid of any aesthetic appeal!
Kim Soleum shrugged. “Well, isn’t usefulness more important than appearances?”
⁃ My word! Mr. Roe Deer, appearances are just as important as the contents! Visual appeal is the first thing that draws in an audience!”
⁃ How could anyone be attracted to such an uninspiring and plain, not to mention ugly, flyer?
Kim Soleum rolled his eyes and clicked onto the site.
⁃ Alright, Mr. Roe Deer. I still have faith in you. Since you said it’s worthwhile, I’m sure there’s more to this flyer than meets the eye—

⁃ …
“Braun?”
No response.
‘Did he really just faint..? He really is a stickler for appearance.’
“You okay?”
⁃ I…need to rest.
‘Be my guest.’
Kim Soleum turned his attention back to the screen.
Kim Soleum scanned through the listings, before his eyes landed on one new addition.

————————————
‘Wow. It’s exactly what I need… It’s perfect.’
Almost too perfect.
‘Is this a coincidence? How could the shop have exactly what I need when I need it?’
Kim Soleum shook his head and sighed. Why even question an extraterrestrial website? At least now he has what he needs.
Kim Soleum hit the purchase button.
And within a minute…
⁃ Oh! The item has arrived. That was quick!
Once again, his order arrived promptly, packed into a post office box. He eagerly unpackaged it, pulling out a white collar wrapped in a bubble wrap.
⁃ Hooh! It even matches your outfit.
Kim Soleum nodded and moved to put it on, wrapping it around his neck until it clicked into place.
⁃ It looks positively divine on you! Now, why don’t you give it a try?
He opened his mouth.
—————————
Kim Soleum walked down the street, eyes glancing around for their agreed meeting spot.
‘Is it just me, or do I feel like everyone’s staring at me…?’
Whenever he looked up, he’d occasionally catch a few lingering stares.
‘Shit, do I look weird? God, this is so embarrassing.’
Kim Soleum pulled at his choker and stared at his feet, hoping to avoid meeting anyone’s eyes.
Then, he suddenly stopped and looked up.
‘Exit 5… This should be it.’
He was holding a box containing one pack of the ‘Blue Soda Churros.’
‘If anything feels off, I’ll bail.’
Kim Soleum stayed alert, eyes open for anybody who may look like they’re looking for him. Soon, someone approached from the direction of Cheonggye Plaza, glancing around Exit 5.
‘There.’
He was tall and dressed entirely in black. With the way he was scanning his surroundings, it was clear he was here for a transaction.
Kim Soleum sucked it up and walked over to him.
—————————
Ryu Jaekwan discreetly glanced around Exit 5, hoping to spot whom he was supposed to meet up with.
‘That old lady? No…I doubt she’d be able to get her hands on supernatural food.’
He glanced to the right.
‘That man? Sure, but he doesn’t look like he’s waiting for anyone in particular.’
He was just starting to entertain the possibility that he was being messed with, and ‘BlueFriend’ didn’t actually exist, until he felt a light tap on his shoulder.
He whipped his head around, only to lock eyes with maybe the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen in his whole life.
“Hello, are you the one from ‘Salmon’…?” The godde—woman brushed a stray piece of her hair behind her ear, tilting her head to the side.
‘Holy…”

(Art by aveseye)
Ryu Jaekwan swore he could hear wedding bells ringing in his head right when that angelic voice graced his eardrums. He felt his face begin to burn.
“Y—“ He coughed, something in his throat, “Yes.”
“Ah, I see.” The woman said, her pretty, pink lips stretching into a soft smile.
‘She smiled. Shit. She just smiled. At me.’
His face flushed an even deeper red.
They stared at each other in silence for a while (well, Ryu Jaekwan did, while Kim Soleum attempted to avoid eye contact), before the woman pulled a box into view. Her hands (pale and lithe, Ryu Jaekwan noted) opened the box, showing him the contents.
She looked up at him, her eyes staring into his innocently, almost as if she was asking if it was what he was looking for.
And even if it wasn’t, he doesn’t think he would have the heart to say no.
“…..”
He gulped and reached a gloved hand into the box, inspecting the contents.
‘Yep, it looks good. But…’
He looked up.
‘How did such a pretty woman, who looks like she had never seen or done bad, get her hands on something like this?’
For some reason, he felt his heart sink.
“So… Is it good?” She asked inquisitively.
‘Yes. God, yes. It’s amazing, just like you—‘
“Yes.” He nodded, his mind running a mile a minute. “This is exactly what I was looking for.”
And then, oh god, and then, she smiled (she smiled!! again! thats twice now!!! at him!!) with all the beauty of an angel, as if she was delighted she could bless him with exactly what he needed.
“Phew, well that’s a relief. I was worried it wasn’t enough…”
‘Don’t worry. Don’t ever worry, please.’
He felt like he was going crazy.
Ryu Jaekwan wanted to slap himself out of it as he pulled out several 50,000-won bills from his pocket, and then handed it over to the woman.
She reached out to take the money, but no matter how hard she pulled, he wouldn’t let go.
“Um…?”
Ryu Jaekwan snapped out of his daze and let go of the money like it had burned him.
“Im—I’m sorry.”
“You’re good.” She pocketed the money and turned her gaze back to him.
“You should know, I don’t know the effects of this item. I wouldn’t recommend consuming it. I know you said it’s for research, but I thought I’d mention it anyway.”
“…!”
His face felt so hot he swore it was about to melt off.
‘She's worried. About me. She’s so kind and caring… Could anyone be more perfect?’
Realizing he forgot to answer, Ryu Jaekwan shakily nodded.
“Well then,” the lady turned around, “have a nice day.”
As Ryu Jaekwan watched the woman leave, his feet remained rooted in place, his face still a blushing mess.
“…”
“Fuck…” He cursed in a low voice.
—————————
Kim Soleum was slumped over his desk, twirling a pen between his fingers in their squad room.
Ever since that day, he couldn’t stop thinking about that guy from ‘Salmon Market’. Luckily, the agent—or who he guessed was an agent—seemed to have fallen for his disguise as he hadn’t looked too suspicious of him.
Although, he thinks the agent should have toned it down on the heavy, black clothing, especially on such a hot day! The poor guy was as red as a tomato!
‘I almost thought he was about to faint right then and there…’
Moreover, on the way home, he had several students approach him asking for his number. He didn’t know if it was some sorry joke, or if they were actually being genuine, but he ended up kindly rejecting them all anyway.
‘Not only were they most likely underage, but I was in full-on crossdress!’
God, the more he thinks about it, the more embarrassed he gets.
Kim Soleum sighed as he tried to cool his rapidly-reddening face, and glanced up from behind his computer wearily.
‘He’s still staring…’
Ever since he got to work this morning, that lizard guy has been staring at him as if he’d wronged his whole bloodline!
“Ahem… Squad Leader?”
The lizard tilted his head in acknowledgment.
“Do you maybe need something…?”
“No.”
“…”
Silence.
“Ah…I see.”
Kim Soleum shook his head and turned his attention back to his desk.
Now that he’s on the topic of that day, did that bastard Baek Saheon end up keeping his mouth shut?
‘Well, I’d assume so. Nobody’s said anything. At least, not in front of me.’
Anyway, even if that psycho did blab to anyone, he'd just have to make his ‘discipline’ more…extreme.
Kim Soleum smiled sadistically at the thought, then looked up once more.
Staaaareee….
Kim Soleum whipped his head back down towards his desk, his body breaking out into a cold sweat.
He’s. Still. Staring.
‘Oh god, does he know…’
‘Does he know that I know he isn’t human!?’
KNOCK KNOCK!
Kim Soleum jolted, almost falling out of his seat.
“I’ll get it…!” Kim Soleum shot up and stiffly walked towards the door, trying his best to ignore the intense gaze pinning him down.
When he opened the door, he was greeted with an unexpected visitor.
“Go Yeongeun-ssi…!”
She smiled. “Kim Soleum-ssi.”
“Is something wrong? Oh wait, before that, you should come in—“
“No,” Go Yeongeun raised a hand. “It’s fine. I just wanted to stop by and give you something.”
“What is it?” Kim Soleum questioned.
“Stick out your hand.”
Kim Soleum complied, and that’s when a pink clip adorned with a strawberry charm was placed onto his palm. He looked up in confusion.
“I found this old thing lying at home, and I thought you’d look good in it!”
“Ah, thank you…” Kim Soleum sputtered, turning the clip over in his palm.
‘No, but why would she give me this of all people…? I don’t wear clips, so why?’
“But, Go Yeongeun-ssi—“
“Kim Soleum-ssi. I’ve said this before, but I want you to know that I fully support you.” She clasped a hand on his shoulder. “Never forget that!”
“Support me in wha—“
“Oh, I’ve got to go now. My squad leader will definitely be angry if I’m late. I’ll see you later, Kim Soleum-ssi!”
And like that, she was gone.
‘Well that was weird.’
Again, why does he get the sense that there’s a huge misunderstanding between them?
Kim Soleum shrugged and turned around, shutting the door behind him.
“Sorry about th—AH!” Kim Soleum jumped back in surprise. Section Chief Lee Jaheon, who was previously sitting down, had somehow ended up right in front of him. He was staring at the clip, then at him.
“…Squad Leader. You scared me… Again, are you sure you don’t need anything?”
“Yes.”
“…”
“Well, is there something you want to say?”
“Yes.”
“I see…” He forgot Chief Lizard doesn’t elaborate unless asked. “Well, what is it?”
“Kim Soleum. I know.”
“You…know?”
“Yes.”
“…Ookayyyy. That’s great!” Kim Soleum quickly sidestepped the lizard, attempting to escape the conversation.
‘I don’t know what he knows, but I don’t want to know. Let’s leave it at that.’
—————————
Grrrrr….
SLASH!
“Bronze-ah! What are you doing!” Choi yelled, slicing through the monster that was about to pounce on Ryu Jaekwan.
“Right—sorry!” Ryu Jaekwan grunted as he jumped back. “Thank you, Agent Choi.”
“Yeah, yeah—“ Another slash with his jakdu, “Thank me later! Quit getting distracted! That’s all you seem—ugh—to be doing lately!”
“You’re right. I don’t know what’s gotten into me.” Ryu Jaekwan said as he stabbed the last monster, a pitiful whine leaving its mouth.
Agent Choi rubbed the back of his neck as he waltzed towards Agent Bronze.
“Seriously, man. We’re in a Disaster. We can’t afford you going off to lala-land!”
“I know.”
“Good. I know you know.” Agent Choi patted his back, and then walked off. “Let’s keep going. I want to go home.”
Ryu Jaekwan nodded in affirmation and quickly followed.
‘Damn it, I need to snap out of it.’
Ryu Jaekwan stared at the back of Agent Choi, who was walking in front of him.
‘But I can’t stop thinking about…her.’
His mind flashed to the pretty woman from the ‘Salmon Market.’
Ryu Jaekwan groaned.
‘Come on, Jaekwan. You’re a Bureau agent, and she’s a normal civilian. You could die at any time, yet you want to go as far as to marry her? Then what happens when you die? You leave her a distressed widow? How could you?’
‘Bureau agents shouldn’t fall in love. Their lives are short-lived at best. Someone like her… Someone like her deserves someone who can be with her 24/7.’
Ryu Jaekwan abruptly paused. Agent Choi looked behind him in confusion.
“Agent Bronze?”
‘Fuck… I really am a terrible person.’
—————————
“Stop following me!” Kim Soleum yelled as he bolted out of the dorm, with Baek Saheon scrambling to catch up. “Throw away the tape first!”
“I already threw it! Out the window!”
- It’s too late.
‘Damn it, why couldn’t this idiot have taken care of his own mess without dragging me into it! I gave him several warnings!’
The lunatic chased him down the street and even went as far as to board the bus with him. At this moment, all Kim Soleum could think was that Baek Saheon was truly off his rocker.
Once they got on the bus, the two attempted to catch their breaths.
“…”
“…”
Baek Saheon rubbed the back of neck. “Hey, you…how did you even know to send those messages—“
“So? How’d you end up with the tape?” Kim Soleum interrupted.
‘Could I just ditch him at the next stop?’
“…It was just something lying around at home.”
He explained how he inherited the tape from a relative, and for it only to be used if he ever wanted to reverse a dire situation.
‘You work at a company that deals with ghost stories, and yet you never cared to inspect the thing!?’
Suddenly, Kim Soleum felt a chill down his spine. This bus has been going for a long while. Why was it still driving?
- Goodness, it’s caught up to us.
Kim Soleum glanced at the bus driver, who was wearing an old-fashioned cap one would’ve seen decades ago. He then reached for the radio, turned it on, and a familiar humming came from the speakers.
Hmm-hmmm..hmmm…
Kim Soleum turned to Baek Saheon, whose face was abnormally pale.
He looked out the window to see the bus rattling along a rough rural path.
[This stop is ‘Horizon Mountain Lodge’]
Then, a grand mountain villa came into view. The bus stopped in front of it.
“You’re getting off?” Baek Saheon hurriedly inquired as Kim Soleum moved to step off the bus.
Kim Soleum ignored the muffled cussing coming from behind him as Baek Saheon followed him off the bus, which drove away once their feet hit the ground.
Baek Saheon sighed in relief. “At least the song's gone, and the tape isn’t here, so the situation’s better than befo—“
“Check your pocket.”
“What?”
“Put your hand in your pocket and check.”
“…”
Baek Saheon reached into his pocket and pulled out…
The old cassette tape he claimed to have thrown away earlier.
“…!?”
He moved to toss it, but Kim Soleum grabbed his arm and stopped him.
“Let’s go in.”
“Go in whe-“
“Over there.” Kim Soleum pointed towards the lodge. There was no point in running away anymore. Even if they tried to run, they’d end up back here anyway.
And he recognizes this story.
It’s a tale of individuals murdered one by one by a serial killer in an isolated location. The thing is, every four years, the Disaster Management Bureau recruits or drafts participants to contain it.
This is a ghost story affiliated with the government—A ‘disaster!’
So, if the Bureau is dealing with this, that means someone has to die. Once you’re involved, it's a confirmed kill. The Bureau prioritizes isolating anything that should not exist in the civilian world, casualties or not.
‘Baek Saheon, this hopeless little shit! Should I just gouge his remaining eye out?’
They both walked towards the lodge front door. Just as Kim Soleum prepared to knock—
Drring-
The sound of a bicycle rang from behind them. Turning around, they spotted someone pulling up to the house, riding on a bike.
- Oh, look, another arrival! Someone else who picked up the item!
‘Another poor soul caught in a ghost story. How unfortunate.’
Kim Soleum sighed and looked over, only to freeze in shock.
“…!”
The figure getting off the bike—he looked familiar. Too familiar.
‘Fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck.’
His outfit was unmistakable.
Dark clothes, a hat pulled low, a mask covering his face…
‘…Salmon Market!’
It was the guy from Gwanghwamun Station!
Actually, they had just met again earlier today. Kim Soleum had met up with him again at Exit 5 of Gwanghwamun Station—of course, disguised. He had to call Go Youngeun to guide him through the whole process of getting dolled up, and honestly, he thought he did pretty well. He had given him cookies from the Alice Picnic Set. Unfortunately, the buyer, after inspecting the item, seemed disappointed.
He said it wasn’t exactly what he was looking for, but still purchased it anyway. He really didn't have to do that, but it was nice of him. Maybe he needed the items for something else?
Feeling bad, Kim Soleum thanked him, cautioned him on the expiration date, and slipped him a small packet with two extra cookies as a bonus. Though, Kim Soleum’s hand hung in the air for a few seconds as the buyer seemed to be out of it. Perhaps he was still ill, because his face appeared to be burning up.
“If you ever find yourself in danger, contact this number.” After accepting the cookies, the man suddenly passed him a slip of paper with the numbers ‘1717 8282 42.’ Kim Soleum took it, and the buyer quickly bid farewell and left. After confirming that it was for sure a government number, Kim Soleum vowed to never call it.
Now, here they are.
‘Hopefully he can’t recognize me. I mean, how could he? I’m a totally different gender!’
Right when their eyes met, the buyer briefly paused.
‘What? Did he recognize me? No, that’s not possible.’
Baek Saheon, ever eager, immediately began speaking in a friendly tone.
“Hello, are you the owner of this house? It seems we got lost, could we make a quick call?”
The man, who was still staring at Kim Soleum, vaguely acknowledged Baek Saheon. “I also got lost and came here to ask for help.
“Oh…I see…”
An awkward silence.
Kim Soleum attempted to school his expression so as to not look surprised at his presence.
The buyer seemed like he wanted to say something, but didn’t.
Baek Saheon broke the silence by attempting to pry more information out of him, which amounted to nothing. Kim Soleum glanced at the bike behind him, the handlebars marked with a government tag.
The agent suddenly turned to Kim Soleum in the middle of Baek Saheon’s rambling.
“Excuse me, are you perh—“
“So, should we go in?” Kim Soleum quickly jumped in to cut him off.
“…Oh, yes. Right.” He seemed almost dejected.
Inside, they met up with the other victims of the ghost story—6 people total. They had all ended up here in cliche ways. In addition, it was almost amusing how every time Kim Soleum spoke politely, Baek Saheon had a disgusted look on his face, like he was genuinely revolted.
“Good afternoon, visitors of the lodge.” Suddenly, a cloaked figure walked in. He claimed to be the caretaker of the lodge.
‘This is the classic ‘butler of the murder mansion.’
He explained the premise: “If you stay at the lodge for three days, you can trade the cassette tape for anything you’d like in the house.”
After some deliberation, the guests, who were originally skeptical, eagerly accepted the deal. The catch was, priority would be given to those with the most cassette tapes.
“Excuse me, I have to leave. Could you tell me the way out of here?” Baek Saheon’s voice cut through the air.
“Of course.” The butler pointed the way out with a gentle expression.
Though, his attempt to leave didn’t go as planned. Coincidentally, a landslide had occured.
“A torrential downpour has caused a landslide outside, burying the roads. Thankfully, the electricity remains functional, so your stay will be unaffected.” The butler explained, unphased.
Baek Saheon turned to Kim Soleum with an expression that practically screamed ‘We’re fucked.’
Kim Soleum shrugged. He expected this—the ghost story doesn't actually allow anyone to leave. No matter what you try, you’ll always end up back here.
One entrant will take on the role of the serial killer, and will embody the predator archetype; this person is among us. The individual will undergo mental and physical transformation and will firmly believe they are inheriting the murderer’s legacy.
‘I have to find and avoid the potential killer.’
‘Unless…I could try a slightly different approach.’
As he pondered, he noticed the civil servant standing outside. Kim Soleum excused himself from the group and headed outside, standing beside him. The agent glanced at him.
Attempting to feign ignorance, Kim Soleum assumed the role of a worried civilian. “Excuse me, isn’t this situation a little strange? It’s just odd that only people carrying cassette tapes got lost and ended up here. It’s almost supernatural.”
‘I’d much rather be treated as an innocent civilian. Let’s see how he responds.’
“You are correct. This is a supernatural phenomenon.”
‘Wow, he really just admitted it.’
The agent looked him up and down, as if assessing him.
“You…” The agent started, then shook his head, as if he was disregarding his previous thought. “How did you come across the cassette tape?”
“Actually, it’s my colleague’s. We ended up here together after getting on the bus.”
“I see.”
“…”
“…”
The agent broke the silence: “I am…well, something of a government agent. I deal with supernatural events such as these.”
‘He doesn’t even know me, and he’s telling me this?’
“Wow, it must be scary.” Kim Soleum schooled a suprised expression.
He looked into Kim Soleum’s eyes then turned away, a light blush coating his cheeks before promptly fading. “…Yes.” A cough, “At any rate, this is indeed a supernatural phenomenon. Be cautious. Stay close to me as much as possible.”
Hold on.
‘He’s treating me even more like a harmless civilian than I expected.’
He almost blushed at the unexpected statement. “Thank you. But…what about the others?”
His voice turned firm. “You don’t need to worry about them.”
“Oh?” Kim Soleum paused. Doesn’t he care if the others get injured too? Does he have a plan? “Would it be okay if I told my colleague—“
“No.”
‘Oh. Well. Okay.’
Suddenly, the agent leaned in and spoke softly. “Actually, there is a killer among us.”
Feigning shock, Kim Soleum spoke hurriedly. “What? How do you know, sir?”
“Similar incidents have occurred here multiple times. Guests were murdered by a killer.” He paused before tagging on, “No matter how close you may be to someone, don’t trust them. And under no circumstances should you open your door while alone in your room.”
Kim Soleum was almost embarrassed at how much it seemed he cared. “Thank you. You should also stay inside. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt as well.”
The agent’s eyes widened and he froze for a second before turning away. “…No need to worry about me.”
Kim Soleum tilted his head but then slowly nodded.
After a moment, the agent spoke again. “…Also.”
“Also?”
“Do you, by chance, have a sister?”
Kim Soleum froze in shock.
Taking his silence as yes, the agent continued. “Im not trying to pry, but I’ve had a few encounters with someone who closely resembles you. Is she…doing well?” His eyes were glancing from side to side.
‘Shit. He seriously doesn’t think that my other self is my sister!?’
“Ah, yes. You know her? I hope she’s treated you well.” Kim Soleum forced a friendly chuckle, going along with it.
He looked almost caught off by the question. “Yes. She’s…she’s nice.”
“…Nice.”
“Yes.”
An awkward silence ensued.
“Well, good.”
“…”
“Alright, I’m going to g—“
“Has she been eating wel—“
They both talked at the same time.
‘Damn.’
“Oh, I’m sorry, you can leave now. Goodnight.” The agent turned away and fidgeted with his cap.
Kim Soleum answered anyway. “Yes, she’s been eating well. And drinking well, and sleeping well, and—“
The agent coughed. “Good. That’s good.”
Kim Soleum laughed lightly.
‘Why does he care so much anyway…?’
Kim Soleum shrugged it off. “Alright, goodnight, agent.”
“Goodnight.”
——————————
When Ryu Jaekwan arrived at the lodge, he was surprised to see two people already there.
But what surprised him more, was how one of them looked exactly like the woman from Salmon Market! He couldn’t help but stare as he walked up to the lodge. The brown-haired one was extremely talkative, asking a billion questions, but he couldn’t help his eyes from straying towards the black-haired one.
‘He’s…he’s pretty too.’
Jaekwan’s eyes suddenly shot wide open.
‘It was already selfish enough allowing yourself to fall for that girl, and now you're lusting over her look alike? How despicable.’
“Were you out here trekking for the weekend? This seems like a remote-place—are you a local?” The brown-haired continued chattering.
“No…”
Ryu Jaekwan then turned back to the Salmon Market-look-a-like.
Now that he thinks about it, they look almost too alike.
Hold on.
Could they be related!?
“Excuse me, are you perh—“
So, agent, should we go in?” The man cut him off.
“…Oh, yes, right.”
Jaekwan sighed internally and followed them in.
‘What were you even going to say? Ask how his sister’s doing? Do you want to seem like a creep?’
——————————
It was the final day at Horizon Mountain Lodge.
The civil servant woke up in bed feeling unpleasant. The whole situation had felt off for a while now, as if everything was planned. He sighed, donned his work uniform and gear, and stepped out of his room. What awaited him was a floor soaked in blood.
On the sofa lay one of the guests, unconscious. The agent hesitated, but ultimately resolved to carry his duties. And besides…
“Ugh…what?!”
They weren't exactly the kind of people worth saving.
“AAAHHHH!”
The woman abruptly woke up to the sight of a tall man, clad in a black raincoat, holding a butcher knife over her.
‘Of course she had to wake up now.’
His initial target had been one of the people in the couple. They were an easy mark. According to the Disaster Management Bureau’s analysis, eliminating half of the couple would sow fear, making the subsequent tasks easier. He was planning to burn that person in the stove.
But someone had beat him to it.
The stove already contained a corpse.
The Disaster Management Bureau had ensured that he would be assigned the role of the serial killer, so how could there be another killer? Someone else has been preemptively killing the victims.
Still, he must complete his task. He must kill her.
Feeling the weight of his exhaustion, he raised the knife, and—
“Agent 007.”
A voice cut through the room.
He turned around and his eyes met the of the black haired-man.
“You don’t have to kill her.”
The chosen ‘serial killer’ will undergo mental and physical transformation by firmly believing they are inheriting the murderer’s legacy.
The black raincoat, the butcher knife—the agent fit the description to a tee.
But, Kim Soleum knew better. Agents come prepared for these kinds of scenarios. He must have some mental defense equipment to inhibit government agents from transforming into a brainwashed serial killer.
Kim Soleum spoke. “You don’t need to kill anyone. I’ve already done everything.”
A moment of silence.
“You’ve killed them?” Ryu Jaekwan tilted his head. It was almost eerie, with the knife and all.
“No, I just made it look like they died.”
“…!”
“In the basement, there’s a collection of preserved body parts and organs on display. They were from past killings. The corpses that you saw were staged—they were made to look real with the parts from the basement.” Kim Soleum explained. He had help from Baek Saheon, who was his first ‘victim’. Together, they staged the crime scenes.
“There were still others who actually died, though.” Kim Soleum continued, “the allergy, the landslide…” Kim Soleum wet his lips. “You caused the allergic shock, didn’t you?”
The agent didn’t deny it.
Kim Soleum should’ve felt sympathetic, but these people who were sent to the darkness were handpicked by the Bureau—they weren’t random, they were people who deserved to die anyway.
Ryu Jaekwan paused before speaking. “They’re all criminals.”
“…”
“Everyone in this lodge would’ve been sentenced to death for other crimes.” He hesitated before adding, “everyone except you, who doesn’t have a tape.”
“You don’t deserve to die.” The agent raised his head.
“I see…” Kim Soleum could only nod. He took a breath, then spoke again: “Anyways, everyone is alive and well.”
“Who are you?” The agent asked abruptly. No ordinary person could’ve maintained such composure.
“I’m just…someone who tends to get swept up in these situations.”
“Are you a part of the Bureau?”
“No. I’ve heard of them, though.”
Then, the door creaked open.
It was the lodge caretaker.
“Did you have a comfortable stay?”
——————————
After the black-haired man made a deal with the butler, Jaekwan could only stare in awe.
“The weather’s cleared.” Soft light began to filter through the windows.
“You there.” Ryu Jaekwan ascended the stairs and strode towards the man. He grabbed his arm and looked at him straight in the eyes.
“Have you ever considered a career shift?”
“Oh…huh??”
“Work for the Bureau. Work with me.” His grip on the black-haired man’s arm tightened.
“I’m sorry…I don’t want to.”
“Please think it over carefully.” Ryu Jaekwan, still dressed like a textbook serial killer, went into a spiel about the details of the job.
‘I want him—I want to work with him.’
“If you’re prone to being drawn into supernatural phenomena, wouldn’t it be better to have financial stability and institutional protection?” Ryu Jaekwan pushed further. The black-haired man cowered slightly.
“I’m sorry, I don’t think I’m capable of resolving supernatural phenomena.” He rubbed his nape.
“Why?” Jaekwan was dumbfounded. The events that just unfolded obviously proved otherwise. “You resolved this situation extremely efficiently.”
“Well, that’s just innate talent…”
‘Talent?’
“Besides, I’m not skilled enough to fight. I have no special abilities.”
The corners of Ryu Jaekwan’s lips lifted slightly.
“Those can be learned. You’ll be taught in detail after you’re appointed.”
“…!” The man almost looked surprised. “It’s still a no, I apologize.”
“In that case, it can’t be helped.” He was disappointed. “If you ever face any concerns or issues, feel free to contact me” He handed the man his contact number. Though, this time, it was in a different format. It wasn’t the government one he handed the woman from the Salmon Market.
Ryu Jaekwan
010-XXXX-XXXX
“This is my work number. If you call it, I’ll be the only one to answer, opposed to any random agent.” It was like a get-out-of-a-creepypasta-free card. Ryu Jaekwan briefly let himself entertain the idea of the man calling the number for something other than that, though.
“Alright, take care on your way down.” Ryu Jaekwan waved goodbye.
“You too, Agent.”
Ryu Jaekwan shook his hand and then rode off on his bicycle.
‘His hands…they were small too. They felt like hers.’
A light blush dusted his cheeks.
However…
He couldn’t help the feeling of guilt rising up through his throat. Not only is he interested in two people as somebody who’s part of the bureau and could die at any time, but those two people are related—does his greed know no bounds!?
Hold on.
Ryu Jaekwan stopped pedaling for a moment, and lifted his eyes from his handle bars.
‘I like…both of them?’
