You’ve suffered the most? Really, more than say Dennis Whitaker?

Summary:

This was inspired by a TikTok I saw from @dollux_rl idk if someone has already written this exact idea; I didn't look.
Dennis and Robby's relationship ended when Dennis was fired and blacklisted by every residency program in the country, while Robby's work life remained unchanged; can't say the same for his social life. How will both reckon with the devastating ending and conflicting emotions on behalf of almost everyone on the matter (although everyone leans towards hating Robby more than feeling bad for him). Will Robby get fired by the new residency director? Will Robby quit? Will Dennis come back, or will he be stuck working on the farm forever? Who knows? I do; you don't. Find out if you want, or don't 🤷‍♀️
(First chapter is basically just lines from Bojack Horseman from Dana, and then everyone yelling at Robby.)

This will probably be restarted in May bc I don't have it in me to write an emotionally complex piece while editing my thesis for the millionth time, but I'm graduating in a few weeks, so I will get to it eventually.

Notes:

Dana is a protective mama bear, Trinity and Dennis are best friends, that's her huckleberry, and she will hurt anyone for him. Everyone wishes Dennis were the one who'd stayed and Robby were the one whose life was ruined. Personally, while I do also ship Hucklerobby, realistically, that relationship is kinda iffy, I mean, Robby is probably thirty years older than him and his boss, so...

Chapter 1: You've suffered?

Chapter Text

Dana rolled her eyes as Robby groaned about his failed love life yet again. “I just don’t understand why I have to suffer in every relationship”, Robby grumbled to Dana. “You’ve suffered?” Dana said, giving him an annoyed look. “I have!” Robby said pointedly. “The most?” Dana said, raising an eyebrow threateningly. “The most”, Robby said firmly. “Really?” Dana said dryly, “More than, say, Dennis Whitaker?” She said, giving him a dark look that would have sent a shiver up any sane man's spine.

“Don’t talk to me about Dennis Whitaker”, Robby said harshly. “No, I want to know how you’re the victim of the Dennis Whitaker story”, Dana said pointedly, her anger rising every second. The day Robby ruined Dennis Whitaker's life was the day she gave up on Robby, the day she decided he was no longer any friend of hers, simply an annoyance she had to deal with every day, almost enough to make her retire for good. “I’m serious”, Robby said, mildly exasperated. “Explain to me how Dennis Whitaker lost his job, and had to move back to Broken Bow, to the life he never wanted to return to, please, Dr Robinavitch, tell me how that was really rough for you”, Dana said angrily.

Robby took a step back from her. “I didn’t do that, he made a choice”, he said defensively. “Oh, he made a choice, that's how you see it”, Dana said, stepping towards him. “You think he made a choice, you think he chose for you to ruin his career, to ruin everything he worked so hard for, everything he went into mountains of debt for, you think he chose to ruin that”, she said harshly. “No, he didn’t choose that, you ignorant man, you did that to him, your selfishness, your ego, your absolutely mindblowing lack of regard for quite literally anyone else beside yourself, that’s what ruined him”, she said, jabbing her finger into his chest.

“He was twenty-five, you were thirty years older than him, honestly, Dr Robinavitch, you make me sick”, she spat. “I didn’t do anything wrong”, Robby said, raising his hands defensively. “Oh, you didn’t do anything wrong”, Dana said sarcastically, “you don’t think having a sexual relationship with a student, who was thirty years younger than you, was wrong, that doesn’t count as wrong in your twisted brain” Dana bit back. “He’s an adult, he can do what he wants”, Robby said firmly.

“You were his boss”, Dana said harshly, “You shouldn’t have, only an idiot wouldn’t have seen this coming”, she spat. “You took advantage of him, and you destroyed his career by forcing him to out your relationship”, Dana said, jabbing him in the chest with her finger again. “You never think about anyone but yourself, you should do us all a favour and retire already”, she said venomously, pushing past him towards Trinity, who was walking into a patient room.

“You really did ruin his life”, Princess said, giving him a dirty look. “What is this yell at Robby time?” he groaned, looking around at Princess, Perlah and Mohan. “It should be”, Mohan mumbled, taking her chart back from Princess. “What did I do to you?” Robby said, annoyed. “What didn’t you do?” Mohan grumbled, rolling her eyes as she walked away.

“Retire, or quit, I don’t care”, Perhla mumbled, walking away from the nurses' station. “Seriously, what did I do?” Robby said, turning to Victoria, who was leaning against the nurses' station, eavesdropping, enjoying the drama silently during the few moments of quiet they got. “Don’t look at me, I don’t like you either”, Victoria said dryly, giving him a dirty look and walking away to find something to do.

Robby looked around the room, exasperated. Ever since his and Dennis’s relationship had been outed, and Dennis had been kicked out of the program and blacklisted by every program in the country for sleeping with his boss, the entire staff had turned on him. Everyone disliked him now, that was obvious, even Langdon didn’t care for his praise anymore, he barely even looked for his approval anymore.

“You did a really bad thing, deal with it”, Princess said, walking away from him, leaving him standing in the nurses' station alone with his thoughts, waiting for something to come through the doors and distract him. Maybe I should just quit. He thought, looking over at Dana and Trinity whispering in the hallway, shooting him angry looks every few seconds.

Against his better judgment, he walked over to them, “What the fuck do you want, asshole?” Trinity spat. “I’ll just leave”, Robby said, turning around. “Good idea”, Trinity said, rolling her eyes at him. “Better yet, leave the hospital for good”, she mumbled to Dana. “I heard that”, Robby said without thinking, “good, you were meant to”, Trinity said pointedly, walking away towards an incoming trauma.

Dana walked away before he could say anything. Robby walked over to the lockers to get some space and found Jack early for his shift again. “Why does everyone hate me?” Robby asked, hoping Jack wasn’t still angry with him. “Because you fucking suck, and that's coming from the guy who used to call you his best friend”, Jack said, annoyed by his mere presence. “What do I have to do to make it up to you people? I’ve said I’m sorry a hundred times”, Robby said, exasperated.

Jack rolled his eyes and slammed his locker shut, “Quit, get out of here, ruin your life as much as you ruined his”, he said angrily. “I didn’t ruin his life”, Robby said defensively. “Oh really, then what happened? Did he just magically get kicked out of the program and blacklisted by every program in the country?” Jack said, raising his eyebrow pointedly. “It’s not my fault he got kicked out of the program”, Robby said, exasperated. “Yes it is, you knew what would happen, any idiot would have known a relationship between a student and their teacher, who was thirty years older than them, no less, wouldn’t end well”, Jack said firmly.

“He was twenty-five, his prefrontal cortex was only just fully developed, you are a grown man, you knew better, you took advantage of him when you should have protected him”, he continued. “I didn’t take advantage of him, he started it”, Robby defended. “I don’t fucking care if he got down on one knee and proposed to you on the top of the fucking Eifle tower, you say no, you were his boss, you knew it was wrong, and you did it anyway because you only ever think about yourself”, Jack spat.

“You’re one to talk, you’re not any better”, Robby said pointedly. “Samira is thirty years old, and I’m six years younger than you”, Jack said firmly. “Oh, and I might add, when we went to HR, they didn’t set off every alarm available”, he added dryly. “I’ve apologised a million times, what more can I do?” Robby asked desperately. “Get Dennis back into the program here”, Jack said firmly. “I can’t do that, you know that”, Robby said earnestly. “Then quit”, Jack said, walking away, his shoulder knocking against Robby’s, making him stumble slightly.
