My thirteen-year-old son is taking a class about the care and treatment of common pets. On the first day of class, the “professor” decided to bring an XL Bully Pit Bull. It attacked my son, badly maiming his arm. The “professor” claims my son was not following the “guidelines” for interacting with the Pit Bull. However, this is wholly an inappropriate creature for an introductory level course.

I wrote to the school board as well as pest control. The school board agreed I had a valid concern and also referred it to pest control. There will be a full investigation. The animal will be put down. Yet, the school board concluded the “professor” bears no responsibility for the harm to my son. I plan to continue pressuring the school into firing this unqualified professor.

Some of the board members are opposed to my actions, and think I shouldn’t have contacted pest control separately, and should have allowed the school to handle it. They have expressed concern that my actions will result in increased government oversight in the school; I say it’s about time. They’re just bitter after last year.

This isn’t even the worst of the Headmaster’s hiring decisions. They haven't been able to keep a gym teacher for more than a year in over 20 years. Last year’s gym teacher turned out to be a serial plagiarist, and lied about his athletic achievements. Yet, while he may have been incompetent, he was one of the less damaging hires. The year before, the gym instructor returned from Albania with a turban. He lured a student into a closed off area of the school to steal…copper wiring, and became a tragic and permanent lesson to the dangers of live current, and succumbed to burn wounds. The resulting fire was contained and the student was unharmed.

My friend who teaches chemistry has wanted the position of gym teacher for over a decade. He is overqualified, and everyone knows he is not temperamentally suited for teaching children the finer details of chemistry, and would prefer to be in a research lab. As long as the current Headmaster is in place, he will never become a gym teacher. He should leave, but every time I raise the issue with him, he brushes it off as he’s indebted to the Headmaster.

I agree. The government is getting more involved this year and sent armed guards to the campus. While they are controversial and the Headmaster feels it harms the learning environment, I agree with the government that they’re an unfortunate necessity due to an escaped convict who is targeting one of the students. I understand why people are uncomfortable, they are offputting, and there have been complaints about their gibberish, staring, and attire, but the safety of our children must come first.

I cannot believe I’m agreeing with the Headmaster, but the guards are a menace. They caused a riot at a school football game. A student was injured and could have been killed! My son was supposed to be playing in that match and his team only rescheduled because of my son's injury! The inquiry showed that they were hungry and restless, so they stormed the field.
