land of myth and time of magic
gaylienz/cupidty11/the-once-and-future-love’s fanfic recommendations for BBC Merlin (merthur and general, mostly).
I read a lot of Merlin fanfiction--these are the ones that for one reason or many have stuck out to me, stuck with me and/or are incredible works of art.

“Maybe I should go first,” Merlin said. “Just to be safe.”
Arthur looked over the edge of the cliff and took in the sharpened rocks and rolling waves and tried to settle his own turbulent insides.
“Absolutely not,” he said, perhaps too aggressively because Merlin raised an eyebrow at him. “If you go first, you’ll end up somehow destroying all the footholds and then where will we be?”

Merlin is recovering from a serious injury or illness. Arthur has Merlin sit between his legs and lean against him in the bath while he gently washes Merlin's hair. Bonus points if Merlin falls asleep in the bath. :) Slightly angsty future!fic -

Summary
It started that morning with Merlin rolling out of bed and stepping on a small sliver of glass. He'd broken one of Gaius's jars in here the other day trying to mix up a magical indicator—something he could drop into Arthur's wine or on his food to see if it had been enchanted. The glass splinter lodged itself into the meat of his heel and no matter how he picked and tore at it, he couldn't get the right angle to pull it out. Whatever. Fine. That was fine. He'd just tie a little cotton padding under it to cushion it for now. Gaius surely had something he could use to pull it out later.
It continued when he limped to the wash basin and knocked the ceramic ewer over, directly onto the foot of his bed. He desperately tried to grab his blanket and shake the water off but much of it had already soaked in. He'd have to strip the whole bed and flip the pitiful mattress up so it would dry. Of course. Of course glass in his foot wasn't enough for this morning.

Somehow, Merlin discovers what is causing the plague. Somehow, Arthur defeats this magical beast, in the caverns below Camelot, with Morgana and Merlin by his side.
As the beast dissolves before them, Arthur and Morgana meet eyes, and have the same thought confirmed at the exact same time.
Merlin is a sorcerer."

Summary
Merlin has a way about him. Arthur doesn’t know what it is, exactly—he just knows that it’s there, and it’s Merlin, and no one else has a way about them quite the way that Merlin does.
