“Baby Bird?” Jason’s voice shifted, softened into something almost fragile, as if he were speaking to a child. Maybe, in his eyes, Tim was exactly that. The familiar nickname—so wrong, so tender—sent a tremor down Tim’s spine. Jason never called him that. Jason never spoke to him with warmth.
Jason hated Tim.
He shut his eyes tight, praying this was just a cruel dream. But then warm hands cupped his face, grounding him. A metallic clatter echoed through the cave, sharp and final. The gun had hit the floor.
“No, no, no—don’t close those blue eyes, Baby Bird. Look at me,” this time Jason’s voice cracked into a plea. Every word trembled with fear, with a need that made Tim’s chest tighten painfully. Tim bit down on a sob, the taste of salt and blood filling his mouth, forcing himself to lift his gaze and meet the toxic green fire of Jason’s eyes once more. He could feel the tremor in Jason’s hands, the way his knees pressed into the cold floor, and it made his own body ache with tension.

“Can you… hear me?”
The man’s head didn’t move. But those eyes tracked him like a hawk. And then—barely perceptible—he nodded.
Tim’s heart thudded. “Who are you?”
The figure opened his mouth. His lips moved, soundlessly. Bubbles rose to the surface of the tank.
Nothing.
Then—behind Tim—his garbage cart crackled.
The analog radio, buried beneath fake trash bags and cleaning supplies, sparked to life with a burst of static. The dial began to shift wildly, skipping from frequency to frequency—AM, FM, even emergency bands—cycling like a roulette wheel possessed.
“–chaos in the eastern– skrrttt –we’ve got heavy– kkktt –three-two-Delta– skzzzhhh –Help... me…”
Tim’s blood turned to ice.

The new Robin was supposed to be alone. This was meant to be an ambush, a time to strike when the boy was least expecting it, a chance to prove a point to Bruce that no child should be shoved into a leotard and sent out to fight crime.
But Robin isn’t alone. His little spiky-haired friend is here, the speedy one, sitting on the couch with Tim, taking up all his personal space. They’re having what Jason can only describe as A Moment.
