“Is that really so bad, though?” Charles muses. “The dog who comes when he’s called gets fed. Protected. Gets a loving hand on his head at the end of the day to reassure him he’s done well.”
“Reckon you’re a better owner than Dutch,” Arthur mutters.
The words fall from Charles before he can think better of them: “You make it easy.”
