Summary
The future wasn't the happy ever after they had all hoped for after all. Instead it was a world where the creatures of the Upside Down ran rampant destroying everything in their path. It was death of their friends and loved ones, and the crippling knowledge that Vecna was minutes away from winning once and for all.
Or so they thought.
It was nothing short of a miracle when the answer to their problems came in the form of a hastily made plan that yet again defied everything they thought they knew. Time travel. With the very fate of the world resting on his shoulders, Mike Wheeler is sent back with only one mission in mind. Stop Vecna and save his friends or die trying.

The thing that Dustin never realized was that Mike was the glue to the party. When Will had left for California, the party still stood, when he was at summer camp, the party still stood, and when Lucas was gone for basketball practice, the party still stood. When it broke up from Max and El, it still stood strong because it was Mike who held them together. He had said that at his funeral, that despite everything they’d gone through, all their struggles and turmoils, Mike held them together because that’s who he was.
It was woefully ironic that the one person who had to be out of Hawkins when the Upside Down came back was killed in California by a government agent.

So far, he’s been steering clear of them as best he could. He hasn’t had a real argument since he returned to Hawkins a couple months back. He’s not about to make things so much harder for everyone. All things considered, things have been good, more or less. Mike doesn’t know why he’s been slipping. He had tried to ignore the emptiness at first, the distant longing, the feelings from before, had tried to distract himself. At the end of the day, he was still alone and had nowhere to run.
It doesn’t matter anyway. Because nothing ever matters.
