“What clans do you come from?”
“The—Metkayina.” The water clan girl gasped out. “We are Metkayina!”
Varang’s tail flicked behind her, smacking against the thigh of one of the children. Each other them nodded. Yes, yes, the children said, we are Metkayina. Travel between clanspeople was rare, made even moreso in the past fifty years. Forest children to claim to be Matkayina was out of the ordinary. “You lie!” She hissed out, grabbing the tswin of the boy, who gasped in pain as she forced him onto his knees.
“Please! Please, we do not lie!” The boy yelled out, strained, tears tracking down his face as Varang made a harsh twist of her wrist. It was not enough to maim, but enough to hurt.
