Summary
The year is 1996, and Dean’s stuck in Kankakee, Illinois while Dad’s on a long-haul hunt. It’s not too bad. He’s even got a friend, now—even if Cas is a weird, gawky loner kid who gets way too intense about his sci-fi novels and doesn’t know how to stop staring. Just business as usual.
Until his dad comes back, and it isn’t.
The year is 2011, and the shadows known as ‘angels’ and ‘demons’ are falling from cracks in the sky, raining death, destruction, and monsters where they pass. When the Joint Task Force asks for their help in stopping the end of the world—John Winchester, his sons, and a ragtag band of hunters—well, that’s just business as usual, too.
Until Dean meets the cold blue eyes of their team liaison—Dr. Castiel Novak.

Summary
Dean Winchester has been alone for a long, long time.
When he and Castiel happen to find each other - a couple of survivors in a world that’s been all but wiped clean - Dean’s looking for his brother; Castiel is looking for something to look for. They stick together, because neither of them much wants to be alone. They hate each other at first, of course. Dean hates Castiel for being weird and quiet and ironic and antagonistic and proud. Castiel hates Dean for being blunt and reckless and coarse, for drinking, for refusing to talk about how he feels and just pretending everything is fine. Most of all, they hate themselves and each other just for being alive. What right do they have to be alive? No one else seems to be.
But against his own will, Dean starts to notice things about Castiel that he likes. Starts to hope that Castiel might like him, too. And together, they start to fight for a world where they're both alive - and that's a good thing.

Oh. My god.
Stories with no endings - just beginnings that stopped, as they must.
There’s something special about this fic’s plot and how it ends in the middle of the action, or even the beginning of it. Cas and Dean have their whole lives ahead of them, the whole world. This ending could feel ambiguous and untethered, but instead it feels grounded and secure. Dean and Cas have each other, and that’s what matters. This fic also has a soft apocalypse feel to it. I think it’s because, despite the discomfort of an apocalyptic world—dirty clothes, sweaty skin, cold food out of a can, aching shoulders from carrying a pack all days and aching feet from walking for miles—Dean and Cas are comfortable with and in each other.
Part of it also comes from the concentrated, absurd emotion apocalyptic settings bring out, and the required vulnerability in that. When you don’t understand what you’re feeling and it’s just an overwhelming flood of too much, a different side of you is forced into the light. Dean and Cas accept this in themselves and in one another. They build a giant bonfire cuz why the fuck not? They say, “I love you.” They ask, “Can I?” They tease each other and come up with silly stories of Ears’s life and bicker over stupid stuff.
I also want to take a moment to applaud how well emotions are written in this story. Dean and Cas could have never kissed or slept with each other or even held hands or said the words and I would have still known they loved each other. When they said, fuck it, let’s light a bonfire and draw in a huge horde, I just shrugged my shoulders with them and went along with the crazy, because in the context of everything, it made sense. Dean’s sudden anger over Cas’s platitudes didn’t feel like it came out of nowhere. Even though the emotional switch was flipped in an instant by such a passing, minuscule trigger, it was completely understandable. In all honesty, I don’t know what writing wizardry you did to achieve this absurd, immersive emotion, but I applaud you regardless.
Also, I’m officially joining the Ears Fan Club. This is my seal of membership.

Summary

From the outside Castiel Novak looks like a regular guy: a good job, two teenage kids, a nice house and a crappy car he’s way too attached to.
But there’s one thing no one knows about him: that, over twenty years ago, he used to live next to none other than Dean Winchester – back then a brash and loud-mouthed boy and nowadays a huge movie star and Hollywood’s sweetheart.
Castiel never bothered to tell anyone about his childhood friend because frankly, who would believe him? Probably even Dean himself already forgot about his former awkward and weird neighbor, so Castiel seriously doesn’t see any point in mentioning the whole thing ever.
But then an interview on national TV happens where Dean reveals way more about his past than ever before … and Castiel - as well as the rest of the world - suddenly realizes that he left a much bigger impact on Dean’s life than he originally thought.

The Clatsop State Forest is a magnificent and ethereal miracle of nature, and despite being partly responsible for its destruction, Dean's more than a little in love with it.
