Summary
He needed to ask him, for his own sanity. He loved Merlin with all of his heart but he was so tired of being the only one willing to open up. Gwaine tried hard not to talk about it, but it genuinely hurt him to see Merlin pushing him away. Not necessarily because it was him he was pushing away – although that hurt just a bit more – but the fact that he was pushing anyone away in general, the fact that Merlin didn’t feel comfortable around his friends and loved ones to share, well… it made him ache more than anything.
He wondered what he’d done to hurt him.
He wondered and wondered for far too long before finally making a decision. As soon as training ended, he was going to drag Merlin from whatever God-forsaken task he was doing, and force him to sit and talk so that he could finally explain to him what was wrong.
Or:
Gwaine is worried about Merlin and wants to talk. Luckily, Merlin seems to be ready to finally share.

Summary
While everyone was leaping up and gasping in panic, Gwaine merely looked back to Merlin, who seemed to be stifling his laughter. Arthur seemed horrified but not in the way the rest of them were and – was that a hint of gold in his eyes?
Leon blinked and looked once more to find Arthur’s eyes had returned to the correct shade. Maybe he was just dreaming, he thought until he noticed Gwaine smirking at Arthur.
Oh… dear God.
Or:
Merlin casts a spell on Arthur that allows him to use magic.
Chaos ensues.

Summary
But, as he watches her now, he comes to realize that she hasn’t changed from the brave, courageous, young woman he remembered her to be. Sure, she seemed to break down in tears most days and snapped at most people who crossed her path, but this made her human. If anything, the test of time has eroded her sense of strength, has pushed her every time she has pulled. And so, he understands when she starts to cry or when she snaps at someone.
Because her best friend has been missing for two months. Because his trail, the morning he vanished, comes up dry. Because there’s no evidence to suggest he made it past the first week. Most likely because… he’s dead.
Or:
Everyone seems to think that Merlin is dead, except for Gwen.

Summary
Arthur has faced many horrors before.
After all, he had been trained since birth to fight against enemies. He had become accustomed to knowing and watching many of his friends die at the hands of beasts and evil magical users.
Not only that, but Arthur had witnessed the evils of power and greed — from Cedric, an unassuming peasant who turned out to be the vengeful spirit of a sorcerer hellbent on killing Camelot and its people, to a bloody dragon who mysteriously escaped his imprisonment and wreaked havoc on the city.
Suffice to say, Arthur had seen everything. From evil sorceress (one of which was his own half-sister) to goblins and trolls (one of which married his father; the other, made him bald) to facing an undead army, Arthur never thought anything would surprise him.
And then he was horribly and brutally proven wrong.
Or:
Merlin, Arthur, and the Knights are attempting to defeat the Dorocha when disaster strikes and secrets are revealed.
