Summary
They had been lost in one another for what felt like hours.
It had been a slow dance through the ancient streets Vienna. Dinner in a secluded corner of a dim restaurant surrounded by locals. Wandering through the drifting late November snow, full and too-warm in their coats. The two women huddled close as they diverted through the Christmas market at Elizabeth’s insistence. Bright pink in their cheeks, snowflakes dotting their hair and coats, steam curling from full cups of spiced drinks.
Their State minder had diverted to the hotel bar, a knowing glance on his face. Vasily refused to acknowledge it. Marya shed her coat as she drifted towards the elevators, shaking the snow from her hair. Elizabeth suggested a sachertorte, a giddy smile on her lips.

Summary
He made his first move and waited for the counter. Vasily took another steadying breath, surpassing a grin at the other man’s obvious discomfort. He made his next move too quickly, giving Vasily the exact opening he had been hoping for. Four successive moves later and the match was finally over. Vasily stood, buttoning his jacket, and extended a hand. The American sniffed and glared at it before storming off towards the hotel bar.
Vasily allowed himself a small smile. Not so unlike another American he knew, once upon a time.~*~*~

Summary
The agent smiled. Cold and hollow; barebones in a way unbecoming to someone barely in their middle-twenties. His hands reached to the seat next to him and lifted a thin file folder. He set it on the table and turned open the front, revealing a small stack of forms.
Vasily had seen it before. He would see it again. A record of his life as face of the Soviet chess team, from age seventeen forward. Its appearance struck no fear in his heart. He was sure the agent could not know that.
“We’ve collected a few concerns following the Vancouver matches,” the agent began. “The first concerns the American, Elizabeth Harmon.”
Vasily nodded. He’d been expecting this for a while. “What about her?”
