He’s mourning, not his father, but the truth he can’t ignore any longer: the racism and white supremacy he grew up in, the guilt he rotted in for so long, the feelings he bottled up until all he could do was cry until his eyes had gone dry and raw.
The pain is acute, shimmering all over his body like summer heat over tar.
He wakes up the next morning curled around his pillow, stomach split in half by hungover. He groans.
“Fuck.”
“Great, you’re awake.” A voice, too cheerful for the bile behind his gums.
“Adrian.” Chris rolls onto his back, an arm thrown over his eyes. “Fuck you doing here?”
“Ah.” He can hear the easy smile in his voice. “Someone called his best friend last night after having too many drinks.”
