Summary
Alfred was there to pick up Dick when he suddenly collapsed in grief and tears. Alfred was there to remind Dick to check up on Damian, Alfred was there for it all. Dick couldn’t ask for a better person in his life.
In comparison, Damian… falls short. Not that Dick should be expecting much for a child anyway. But Damian is nowhere near as… good as some of the other members of Dick’s family. It’s hard to find merit in having a relationship with a boy that Dick never wanted responsibility for. Damian doesn’t make it any easier, either (and Dick knows it's not fair and that Damian just lost his father too, but Dick is hurting and he doesn’t know what else to do).
