Far Realm ability score shenanigans by JotunPhilosopher

Summary
A few thoughts I had while reading through 'Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk', particularly the climactic Far Realm bits and the 'Far Realm Explorers' plot hook for possible further adventures; the Far Realm is pretty flippin' eldritch -- here's a possible way to emphasise this for your players!

New magic item: Tin Of Soothing Infusions by JotunPhilosopher

Summary
My local Asian cookshop has some very interesting tea blends available, and the ones that come in floral-patterned tins gave me the idea for this magic item; I kept thinking, "Oh, there's one teabag left," then finding that there were two or three squashed up together! I had some pretty strong instincts about which colour went with which healing effect, but I put up a poll on my tumblr to get some other perspectives. The poll results bore out my own instincts, so here we are! :D

Summary
This was a NaNoWriMo project of sorts (though I actually finished it on the 3rd of December) -- I wanted to see if I could spin a semi-noodle-incident background allusion in my 'Ineffable AU' fic (linked near the end of the adventure) into a full thingummy. It's my very first bit of writing for D&D, so naturally I made a huge ten-floor dungeon with side bits... XD (I don't do anything by halves!) I was trying to make the setting seem like it'd be plausible as a working opera house, even without the player characters' presence, so that might be part of it.
This adventure is balanced for a party of four tenth-level characters. The storyline is primarily inspired by the original 'Phantom of the Opera' novel from 1911 (which I'm fairly sure is public domain), with some side bits, NPCs and so on inspired by Terry Pratchett's novel Maskerade (not public domain) -- have fun spotting all the references!
Happy dungeoneering! :D

D&D monster: Vengeance Goose (plus summoning spell) by JotunPhilosopher

Summary
This was inspired by a tumblr post which I’ve seen in screenshot form on imgur from time to time, though I’m having trouble tracking down the original post; the gist of it is, “don’t wish death on your enemies – wish geese on them. Infinite geese.”
This appealed to my sense of humour, hence the following monster statblock (partly cribbed from the ’giant goose’ (https://5e.tools/bestiary.html#giant%20goose_bgg) from the 5e supplement Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants (https://5e.tools/book.html#bgg), specifically some of the stats and the Actions section, especially the ‘Thunderous Honk’ move; it was the most goose-y statblock I could find) and accompanying summoning spell. Both monster and spell are deliberately overpowered jokes, so DMs, be judicious in using them with your table – but if you do, definitely drop me a line because I’d LOVE to hear how it goes! (There’s always one Big Bad Evil Guy who’d be soooooo satisfying to take down via swarm of cactus-wielding geese >:D Mwahahaha!!!)
In my mind, this monster resembles a Canada Goose (albeit larger), but feel free to sub in whichever type of goose you consider to be especially vicious b******s! :D

Doctorish D&D vendor ideas by JotunPhilosopher
Fandoms: Doctor Who, Dungeons & Dragons (Roleplaying Game)

Summary
Just a smattering of fun ideas for vendors to add flavour to a market, festival or carnival during a light-hearted section of a campaign – or, if you use a lot of them and your players catch on to the references early, they might work as an indicator of how close things are to hitting the spinning blades – the worse things are looking vis-a-vis the BBEG’s Evil Plan ™, the more of them show up and/or the more openly worried they are (for example).
And as ever, if you do use this material in your D&D games, definitely drop me a line, because I’d love to hear how it goes! :D

The Order of the Stick: thoughts on stats in 5th Edition by JotunPhilosopher

Summary
I got into this lovely little webcomic recently, as an offshoot of my interest in Dungeons & Dragons in general – it’s extremely well-crafted in plot, worldbuilding and characterisation, and is very accessible even without being completely au fait with the 3.5 edition mechanics on which the comic’s world runs.
One of the interesting aspects of the comic is the main characters' poor build optimisation relative to their effectiveness. Now, I’m mainly used to Fifth Edition (pre-2024) mechanics, which are a lot less complicated than 3.5e mechanics (I tried to read the 3.5e Player’s Handbook and went cross-eyed from overload very quickly), which got me thinking – how would the Order’s builds translate into 5e? My thoughts are below!
Spoilers abound, because it’d be difficult to make the discussion remotely coherent otherwise XD
Tally ho!
