“Hans listen to me.”
That got through. Hans stared at him, blinking like he’d only just remembered Henry was still there. His lips parted, his chest rising too fast.
“It’s too late,” Henry said gently.
Hans' mouth stayed open a beat too long before shutting, he looked away sharply.
Henry’s voice stayed low, steady. “And what do you think we’ll be if we do run? Do you honestly think they’ll just let us vanish?”
Hans went still. Something flickered in his eyes. Hurt and humiliation, quickly masked by fury.
“You’ll lose everything,” Henry went on. “And for what? A hovel on the road? A boot in your ribs from the first man who thinks you’re lying about your blood?”
Hans' jaw tightened.
“You remember Trosky,” Henry added. “How they treated you when they thought you were no one. Do you really think you’d survive that twice?”

Hans held his gaze, grin curling wider now.
“Yes?” he asked innocently. “Something wrong with my blade?”
Henry blinked once. Then he exhaled hard. Like he was trying not to laugh. “I swear,” he muttered, turning back to the bench.
“I’m very serious about my weapon maintenance,” Hans continued, stepping forward with the careless swagger of someone who knew exactly how far to press. “It gets rather stiff if left unattended.”

“That sounds like a terrible lover,” she teased lightly, though the pink in her cheeks betrayed her interest.
“It should be,” Hans said, grinning faintly. “But it’s not. Not with him. He listens. And he’s good.”
She arched a brow, her voice lowering slightly. “Good?”
Hans turned toward her, propping himself on one elbow. The firelight caught the mischief in his eyes, warming the sharp edge of his grin. “You ever wonder why I can coax you apart with my tongue like I was born to it?”
She flushed deeper, her gaze dropping for a moment before flicking back up, equal parts amused and scandalized. “I assumed you were simply gifted.”
He gave her a crooked smile, something tender and wicked glinting behind it. “I was not. Not until Henry.”
Jitka’s eyes widened, a soft gasp caught between a laugh and disbelief.
“No,” she whispered, incredulous.
“Oh yes.”

He walked forward with slow steps and sat beside Jitka on the rug. His fingers found the edge of her braid, curling the end loosely around his finger. She leaned against him without question.
Hynce giggled, kicking wildly, and Hans reached out to pull him into his arms.
“I missed you,” he murmured, closing his eyes to relish the warmth of his sons coos muffled against his chest.
Jitka hummed and kissed his cheek.
Hans looked back to Henry, who had lifted Henerich effortlessly onto his lap and was helping him re-buckle the strap of a too-large scabbard.
A dangerous, unspoken longing burned in his chest. He swallowed hard abasing it, the truth curling behind his ribs like a secret too sacred to speak aloud. His family was whole, but not yet complete. One piece was still missing, the one thing Henry had never asked for, and Hans had never dared to offer.

His hand stilled mid-stroke where he’d been palming at himself lazily through his braies, lips parted, eyes half-lidded with the dazed pleasure that shifted in an instant. Every line of his body sharpened.
Loyal and obedient just like his dog.
“Fetch me my belt.”
The words fell like a stone into the still air, and she delighted in the way Hans tensed beneath her, saw his smugness falter.
