His feelings for Edrahasivar were something that he had never even planned to tell anyone about. It was a bit alarming to realize that Csethiro could read them so easily in their interactions, but at least she was— apparently— not the jealous sort. Leaving this up to Csevet to deal with, though, was... Excruciating. Understandable, but excruciating.
A few days of sick leave causes Csevet and Maia to appreciate each others’ company all the more. Csethiro makes well-founded but false assumptions about the Emperor’s relationship with his secretary.

“Who knows the Emperor’s mind better than his wife?” Csevet asked. She looked up at that to fix him with a pointed look, and he flushed slightly. “Well. That would be a whole other degree of scandal. They will accept thee, Csethiro. It is not permanent; they need only recognize thee as speaking for the Emperor until he is recovered.”
“Thou’lt help?” she asked him, a pleading note in her voice.
He only gave her a small smile again, as if he had an idea of what she was thinking. “Of course, Highness.”Maia is incapacitated for several weeks after being poisoned. Csethiro, with Csevet’s aid, keeps the Empire running while he recovers.
